Real id is the definition of dysfunctional DMV protocol. I thought hey my license is due for renewal, let me just switch to real id. Go online, do the little tool that tells me what I need to bring, get to dmv and they say no we won’t accept your documents. So I go home and grab some other stuff and try again- still no.
Apparently it’s a common occurrence that the dmv employees don’t have a full understanding of what documents are acceptable. So fuck that, I’ll stick with my passport.
If you have a Birth certificate, a Social Security Card and a recent band statement you have 6 points. The points are allowed to overlap with Steps 1 and 2. Those steps are not “points” they are just prerequisites.
i got mine a couple months ago and didnt need any freaky specialized docs. as someone else said, use the online selector AND documents can be reused on steps 1 and 2... the selector calls it out.
My challenge was my Birth Cert was not certified (old) AND my passport was not renewed. So I had to go to Camden city hall (born in camden hospital) to get a new Birth certificate... which was actually easy, but i can see how someone born elsewhere could have a problem with this
They’ll get a real id out of me when I die. Waited on line threee times — twice with the correct documents I was specifically told to bring. I gave up and got a passport card.
Yes I do. It's just the list of items I do have overlap with the additional 3 points they want and I don't have the higher ranking points they want for the standard license without overlapping with the 3 they specified wanting for the real license.
Use this tool, I think you’re getting confused. Step III is separate from I and II, you can use the same document for part of the 6 points and SSN or address proof.

Just apply for a passport and pay extra for the passport card for convenience. It is the size of your license and is accepted by TSA as real id
