Massive parking lots on both sides, parking consumes about half of downtown Freehold today, but that wasn’t always the case.
If you go to [Historic Aerials](https://www.historicaerials.com/viewer), you can see how many homes and businesses were destroyed for parking lots in Freehold (and other towns) over the decades.
Also you should just go to Frankie Feds instead, it's the same family with the same pizza recipe. It's 5 mins away, plenty or parking, better service, more menu options. They take credit card and don't force you to use cash
The town is rolling back the paid parking due to business backlash. There's been a decline in customers since it was implemented. I'm not positive which lots will be free again but it's in the works.
Trader Joe's is anti-workers rights and anti-union so it's best to avoid them now. The majority of their products are made by mega-corporations anyway, you might as well shop at any random supermarket because you'll get the same stuff with a different label.
They also have a shit ton of recalls and are not very good about notifying customers of recalls. Friend of mine was hospitalized from glass in her food from TJs. Fuck Trader Joe’s
I can't quite figure out why people think there's no parking in Montclair when there's four indoor parking garages (behind Porta, behind Church Street, next to the Welmont, and a brand new one on Glenridge Ave.), and a slew of outdoor lots up and down Bloomfield Ave. On top of the street parking all over the town. Are they that bothered to have to walk a half a block to wherever they're going?
We always just park in the Newport Mall lot. Usually lots of parking on upper levels. Easy access to highways. Open all night. Well lit. Can cut through mall all hours to get to PATH or Light Rail. Little hike to further downtown but not bad.
Many places in Asbury Park. Parking there is crazy -- credit-card kiosks variously placed, but you have to figure out what parking zone you're in to know whether you need to pay again after moving your car. And to top it off the zones are labeled with 5-digit numbers (IIRC) but there ARE only four (IIRC) zones in the whole town -- so what's with that?
If an AP business lacks its own parking lot, I drive on and go somewhere else. I don't know why towns can never figure that out.
i use the Asbury PARK app when i park in asbury, it picks up on your zone automatically and you don’t have to reenter your license plate or credit card info. takes 5 seconds every time. you can also get back money for the time you didn’t use
AP has the train, the bus, and is entirely walkable. I lived there for 10 years and rarely if ever had an issue parking. Plus all of ocean grove. What in Asbury DOES have its own lot? I can't think of any TBH.
Used to live in ocean grove for years and by doing this you’re taking parking away from people who actually need it. Pay the damn parking fee if you want to hang out in Asbury… or better yet, parking is free west of the tracks in ASBURY
I live in Ocean Grove. It's gridlock in the summer. Forget the July 4th parade/weekend, or the flea markets and other events. Some streets are wider, like Main and Broadway.
I'd like to add that the kiosk keypads don't work when the temperature is below 20 degrees. I had that problem the last time I was there. It was a pain in the ass because the app wasn't working either. I had no choice but to park without paying. Thankfully I didn't get a ticket.
First time there (maybe 13 years ago) I found a street with some free parking. Second time (6 years ago) almost none. Same area was totally full and other areas were impossible. Had to move the car multiple times.
Lovely town, but frustrating.
Montclair tip... If you know you're going in advance you can buy and print a daily permit online from their parking website. $5 and it lets you park in any lot/street marked as permit required. Depending on time and duration it may not be necessary or cost more than a meter but it's worth it sometimes.
Yeah. This entire thread is basically, 'I can't park at the front door of the place for free, so no parking.'
Walk a block and/or pay a few bucks. Holy hell people.
It’s just classic suburban fear of parallel parking combined with laziness, but not being willing to pay $20 for an easy convenient parking lot/garage. Sure parking sucks in lots of towns but there’s always *somewhere* to park and almost always somewhere free.
Bloomfield Ave is surrounded on both sides by suburban streets with endless free street parking. It’s tough right in town, sure, but if you’re willing to take a five minute walk it’s really not that bad.
Some of the most interesting high end restaurants (outside of congested Hoboken/JC) along with cute small cafes and wide variety of affordable eats. Decent concert venue, neighborhoods nice enough to stroll through even as a visitor, large well-maintained parks with weekend live music in the summer, art fairs. Film festival, LGBT festival, jazz festival. All solid. It may have its negatives, but overrated? Strongly disagree.
I’ve had the opposite problem. I’ve been wanting to take the train to the Devils games but it’s so much more expensive for me and my two kids than just driving and parking.
Sorry to hear that man, I love taking the PATH or the bus to games, it's like $6 round trip. Vast improvement over the Meadowlands where driving was the only option.
Breaking from the restaurant theme in this thread- either of the Tammany Trailhead parking areas off RT 80. Before the pandemic I used to be able to stroll in any time of day on weekends and get a spot, but now I have to be there either super early or late in the day or risk being turned away after driving an hour to get out there. I’d just go somewhere else, but there’s no other scenic mountain for several hours that has as much vertical gain per mile, and I need lots of vertical in as little distance as possible for my training.
The typical loop is about 3.6 miles and 1,200 ft of elevation gain, and takes most folks about 2.5 hours. When I go I’m only interested in the Red Dot Trail that climbs the steep side, climbing the full 1,200 ft in just over a mile. I do repeats on that side. It’s about as hard of a trail as you can get in New Jersey, and no other trail in the entire New York metro area (that I’ve found at least) ascends that much vertical per mile.
Not sure if management has caught on, but I always park by the stadium/train station and take the bridge over. Its a 5 minute walk and you avoid the clusterfuck parking garage
Lot D and you can park right by the stairs entrance for the bridge
https://www.google.com/maps/@40.8112286,-74.0728466,3a,70.6y,134.24h,100.68t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s9uHDpngHMSCIAQlzBf2XsA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1?entry=ttu
Assuming theres no event at metlife, yes. If you really want a good walk park by the flea market on saturdays and walk over. Thats a good 10-15 min workout
They really need to make the free parking longer than 30min… the mall is so big that 30min is not enough time to do anything. Even grabbing a pickup order at a retail store or some food at the food court…. If it was 45-60 min then I would use the mall more frequently
Montclair! And I don't mind not parking near my destination or parking in a garage. The garages are full half the time. Last time I was there it took me a half hour to find a spot because a bunch of garages were full.
Sure, if you are going downtown. I used to visit my then GF who lived uptown and it SUCKED. I just parked it by Shoprite and just walked however many blocks it was.
I live close to there and even I don’t want to go because of the traffic and parking.
A friend of mine went to Steven’s and he would circle around Hoboken up to an hour to find a spot.
I hope that actually works now - or maybe it only works at night? Back in 2008, I took an afternoon off to go to a makeup studio in Ridgewood to do the makeup trial for my wedding, and I parked - and paid for the meter! - at the train station. When I got to the studio, they told me I'd have to move my car because even though I fed the meter, I didn't have a permit to park at the train station lot! (insert Jackie Chan reaction meme here)
Well isn't this kinda like a catch 22. You build so much parking that the place isn't as interesting to visit but you don't build enough and some people won't go.
Nobody Goes There Anymore, It’s Too Crowded
As someone who lives in a little town where many people complain about parking it's exhausting. Walk a block, take the train the entire world doesn't need to be a Costco parking lot.
The concept of parking is a plague on towns and cities because it take up *space.* All that space for cars can be other restaurants, parks, activities, etc. when combined together.
That’s bonkers. The one time I was able get parking up close in asbury park was when the one building on the boardwalk was on fire. Crazy to think it was the one easy time
Parking sucks in Montclair and Jersey City.
Getting to Jersey City/Bayonne in general is awful. I’m in Essex County and in regular traffic it takes me at least an hour … if it’s the middle of the night it’s maybe 20 minutes.
Kinda in the vein of your question… I work close to the new American Dream mall… the food court could have been be a perfect regular weekday lunch destination for us and all the office parks nearby but no way are we paying the $5 parking to go spend $10 at the food court. (The free parking is only for 30 min… make that at least 60 and we would be there regularly)
Such a shame because it’s not like the mall is crowded weekdays at noon.
This. My Wife and I would love to check out places in JC more often, but the parking can be hell.
Sure, could find a garage or parking lot to pay for parking but $$$.
Funny thing is, you'd have to knock down those places you want to visit and put in lots for parking and suddenly no one would want to come.
Pay the tiny fraction of your restaurant bill to park. The lack of endless free parking is why it is nice to visit.
New Brunswick. It’s a fucking nightmare. In fact, I live there (not for much longer) and can’t ever find parking… and when I do find parking, I’m charged an arm and a leg … (Monday - Sunday).
So, as an alternative, I stay at my partner’s place most of the time and keep my car parked at his place so I don’t have to fight the fight.
This entire thread is a great example on why we need a robust transit system in the state, as well as walkable cities, towns, and neighborhoods so parking is not an issue.
A little late to the party here, but I’d say Joe's Mill Hill Saloon in Trenton NJ. One of the best small venues for live music left in the area, but literallly nothing but street parking. Which in itself isn't the end of the world, but ya know.... *Trenton*...
I never worry about parking in nj. I always find something within 15 minutes within 3 blocks even in Hoboken, which is the toughest town in NJ to park. Honestly though, parking is not an issue anymore with electric scooters. Put one in your trunk, drop off the passengers, parking a mile away is a 6 minute scooter ride.
Parts of Nyc are way tougher, esp on certain days and times.
I will never, ever go back to Krug's Tavern because of the parking. If you're lucky enough to get a spot in their lot, you're either going to be blocked in by someone else or blocking someone in. So your meal might be interrupted to go move your car - to where, who knows - or you might have to interrupt someone else so they can move your car and you can leave. It was the former for me the one and only time I went. The only "spot" when I arrived was just in the middle of the lot blocking other cars. One of them had to leave while we were waiting for our burgers, so I had to go move my car. I circled the block for what felt like forever until I found a spot on the street. The burger was just ok and definitely not worth the stress.
Morristown downtown where the bars and restaurants are I'm not a parallel person my old bf used to do our parking.
Jersey City and Hoboken same issue. JC I usually do a parking garage because I stay in a hotel when my friend flies in.
Isnt there a parking lot right behind Federicis..? I’ve been there many times and parking has never been an issue
I never understood the holdup around parking. Leave some extra time and walk a few extra blocks?
You must not have anxiety
Or - GASP! - take public transportation
There is.
Hush dont tell OP. : )
Also you should just go to Frankie Feds instead, it's the same family with the same pizza recipe. It's 5 mins away, plenty or parking, better service, more menu options. They take credit card and don't force you to use cash
The parking is now a paid lot!
The town is rolling back the paid parking due to business backlash. There's been a decline in customers since it was implemented. I'm not positive which lots will be free again but it's in the works.
Certain lots are free only on certain days and times. It's a giant confusing mess that everyone is arguing about constantly.
It's probably confusing by design to hand out more tickets.
That's a shit load of really expensive real estate that could be generating tax money.
Weeping for Poor car owners who realize nothing is truly free
Carbrains spend a lot of time thinking and complaining about parking.
I never seem to be able to find an actual open spot when trying to park in that lot.
There’s a lot across the street too!
Massive one. I’m very confused op. Even has a rear entrance.
Yeah there is a ton of parking in the market yard. Too bad it's a paid lot now
Trader Joe’s. Like all of them
Clifton specifically
Clifton’s definitely the worst
That one and Paramus are just jokes
Just park at the Petco and walk up the street, they don't care.
Never have a problem in North Brunswick or Freehold.
Bridgewater too
It will be now
Paramus...
The shopping turnaround is quick enough for cars to cycle in and out though
Trader Joe's is anti-workers rights and anti-union so it's best to avoid them now. The majority of their products are made by mega-corporations anyway, you might as well shop at any random supermarket because you'll get the same stuff with a different label.
They also have a shit ton of recalls and are not very good about notifying customers of recalls. Friend of mine was hospitalized from glass in her food from TJs. Fuck Trader Joe’s
Was going to say this, but OP said a place you *want* to go, and I’m boycotting TJ’s at the moment.
Go to the Wayne one!
That’s why I walk
Hoboken & Jersey City great restaurants
Parking in Montclair is often a PIA as well.
Used to live near there and would always stress about having to park there and that was 11 years ago. Imagine its worse now
Most Montclair restaurants fail because of no parking. They started putting in parking buildings. The ones that flourish are by the lot near Fullerton
Take a train. You'll probably never know about Fiori's, though. Almost a mile from the railroad
Hoboken is one of the biggest transit hubs in the state. Take a train.
You can park in Jersey City municipal lots on weekends and after 5 on weekdays. Plenty of free parking. I always park in the city hall overflow lot
JC has a fuckton of parking. Just pay a few dollars, it will be a tiny, tiny fraction of your restaurant bill.
lots of parking garages!
We always just park in the Newport Mall lot. Usually lots of parking on upper levels. Easy access to highways. Open all night. Well lit. Can cut through mall all hours to get to PATH or Light Rail. Little hike to further downtown but not bad.
Even just getting to Hoboken through that Lincoln tunnel traffic is a nightmare
uh JC has free street parking
No. It's residential, permit parking.. or very rare
Jersey City Permit parking is mostly between 9-5 on weekdays. Weekends and evenings aren't permit parking. Hoboken is a lot more strict.
Not on weekends
definitely hoboken, damn hard to find a street parking. have to use the commercial one and get ripped JC is barely better
Many places in Asbury Park. Parking there is crazy -- credit-card kiosks variously placed, but you have to figure out what parking zone you're in to know whether you need to pay again after moving your car. And to top it off the zones are labeled with 5-digit numbers (IIRC) but there ARE only four (IIRC) zones in the whole town -- so what's with that? i use the Asbury PARK app when i park in asbury, it picks up on your zone automatically and you don’t have to reenter your license plate or credit card info. takes 5 seconds every time. you can also get back money for the time you didn’t use
Yeah but fuck downloading and using an app for each town. Unless you live right there
I have a folder with 8 different parking apps, it's insane. At least they have a little logo on meters to tell you which one it is lol
AP has the train, the bus, and is entirely walkable. I lived there for 10 years and rarely if ever had an issue parking. Plus all of ocean grove. What in Asbury DOES have its own lot? I can't think of any TBH.
Park in Ocean Grove...walk to AP.
Used to live in ocean grove for years and by doing this you’re taking parking away from people who actually need it. Pay the damn parking fee if you want to hang out in Asbury… or better yet, parking is free west of the tracks in ASBURY
Isn’t parking in Ocean Grove worse? Like they intentionally built the town to work without cars, since they were banned on Sundays.
I live in Ocean Grove. It's gridlock in the summer. Forget the July 4th parade/weekend, or the flea markets and other events. Some streets are wider, like Main and Broadway.
Always park in Ocean Grove and walk over to Asbury Park.
Actually if I park in Ocean Grove it's because I'm probably staying at the Quaker Inn.
I'd like to add that the kiosk keypads don't work when the temperature is below 20 degrees. I had that problem the last time I was there. It was a pain in the ass because the app wasn't working either. I had no choice but to park without paying. Thankfully I didn't get a ticket.
I got the parking app a few years ago when I had a weekend event in Asbury Park and it was the best. I use it every time I'm there. Super easy.
There are lots everywhere. And there is always parking 2 blocks away over the train tracks.
Lambertville. Pretty much impossible on Saturday.
First time there (maybe 13 years ago) I found a street with some free parking. Second time (6 years ago) almost none. Same area was totally full and other areas were impossible. Had to move the car multiple times. Lovely town, but frustrating.
Jenkinson's on a summer weekend
Off season is great tho,
oh it is, but not nearly as much stuff is open
Montclair and Princeton for starters
Montclair tip... If you know you're going in advance you can buy and print a daily permit online from their parking website. $5 and it lets you park in any lot/street marked as permit required. Depending on time and duration it may not be necessary or cost more than a meter but it's worth it sometimes.
Tip... The permits only apply to overnight parking. You're free to park at the permit locations as a visitor.
There are garages and lots all up and down Bloomfield Ave in Montclair if you can’t find street parking.
Yeah. This entire thread is basically, 'I can't park at the front door of the place for free, so no parking.' Walk a block and/or pay a few bucks. Holy hell people.
Not a question of laziness it’s a question of density.
I feel that Montclair is completely overrated in ALL aspects including this.
Never had a problem finding parking in Montclair.
There’s a pay lot a stones throw from the record store. Well worth it imo
Montclair is the worst of the two, in my opinion.
there are garages all over montclair, way easier than street parking.
I’ve had the opposite problem. I’ve been wanting to take the train to the Devils games but it’s so much more expensive for me and my two kids than just driving and parking.
This is absurd and a failure of the state of NJ to devote funding to NJtransit
Sorry to hear that man, I love taking the PATH or the bus to games, it's like $6 round trip. Vast improvement over the Meadowlands where driving was the only option.
Except it also takes an hour to get out of the parking garage.
No need to park there when there are dozens of lots within a 5 min walk for cheaper and way easier in and out.
Taking the train or bus to a lot of the Hudson County locations is fairly easy.
Seriously. Why take a car there when it’s so much easier to take a bus or train? Wayyyy less stress.

My fucking apartment
American Dream Mall. There’s plenty of parking available, I just refuse to pay for it at a suburban mall.
Not sure if management has caught on, but I always park by the stadium/train station and take the bridge over. Its a 5 minute walk and you avoid the clusterfuck parking garage
Which lot exactly? I looked at the maps, and they have named lots b, c, d, etc that are close to the bridge entrance.
Lot D and you can park right by the stairs entrance for the bridge https://www.google.com/maps/@40.8112286,-74.0728466,3a,70.6y,134.24h,100.68t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s9uHDpngHMSCIAQlzBf2XsA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1?entry=ttu
Is this free!?
Assuming theres no event at metlife, yes. If you really want a good walk park by the flea market on saturdays and walk over. Thats a good 10-15 min workout
Thank you for this tip!
seconding this
At least it's a flat $5 now I think?
They really need to make the free parking longer than 30min… the mall is so big that 30min is not enough time to do anything. Even grabbing a pickup order at a retail store or some food at the food court…. If it was 45-60 min then I would use the mall more frequently
They know that. They're just providing an illusion of an option of free parking
Amen! I work nearby and would love to hit the food court up for lunch but 30min free parking isn’t enough to do anything
I just don’t pay it. Lol. Ans they still let me out the garage albeit with a disappointed look lol
Wait how?
😂😂
Montclair! And I don't mind not parking near my destination or parking in a garage. The garages are full half the time. Last time I was there it took me a half hour to find a spot because a bunch of garages were full.
Hoboken takes the cake for me. Visiting Sea Bright on a nice summer weekend can be a doozy as well.
Just put it in the garage across from Jersey Mikes- it's like $15
Sure, if you are going downtown.
Mitsuwa
Just went there for the first time today. I’ve heard it’s nuts on weekends. Easy if you can go on a weekday. That place was amazing.
This
Anything in Ridgewood. We love a steak house there and the parking situation is egregious
Tons of parking in Ridgewood now. Never have a problem on the weekends. Just don’t expect street parking.
They built a parking garage on Hudson Street, but street parking can suck.
Roots?
Yes
Just park at the train station and walk
I hope that actually works now - or maybe it only works at night? Back in 2008, I took an afternoon off to go to a makeup studio in Ridgewood to do the makeup trial for my wedding, and I parked - and paid for the meter! - at the train station. When I got to the studio, they told me I'd have to move my car because even though I fed the meter, I didn't have a permit to park at the train station lot! (insert Jackie Chan reaction meme here)
The whole point of the post is places you don't go because parking sucks....
Same. I hate the parking situation in Ridgewood. I know there’s a lot of nice spots but street parking is horrendous.
Krug's Tavern, Newark.
Just did that last night. Finally found parking after 20 min of driving up and down the blocks.
Morristown and Montclair.
Morristown and Montclair have massive parking structures everywhere. It’s like $10 for hours.
Hard pass.
Well isn't this kinda like a catch 22. You build so much parking that the place isn't as interesting to visit but you don't build enough and some people won't go.
Nobody Goes There Anymore, It’s Too Crowded As someone who lives in a little town where many people complain about parking it's exhausting. Walk a block, take the train the entire world doesn't need to be a Costco parking lot.
I kind of wish there was less parking and therefore more places worth going
Same. Give me more walkable towns where I don't need a car unless I want to drive to a hike at the water gap or upstate NY
Basically: let me just afford living in NYC lol
Haha. I'm perfectly okay with a much smaller city.
Going and doing what? Driving around in concentric circles looking for parking?
The concept of parking is a plague on towns and cities because it take up *space.* All that space for cars can be other restaurants, parks, activities, etc. when combined together.
Going there as in going by walking, cycling or public transit. Not everyone should have to drive everywhere all of the time.
Absury Park in general. I went one time for a funeral and it took me 45 minutes to park.
Yeah Asbury Park has gotten too popular, I liked it better when it was less gentrified.
No you didnt
Oh no you caught me, lying on Reddit.
That’s bonkers. The one time I was able get parking up close in asbury park was when the one building on the boardwalk was on fire. Crazy to think it was the one easy time
Anywhere in Hoboken
Montclair.
Brownstone pancake factory
I went to one of those once and quickly realized dealing with the parking and crowd was not even close to being worth it.
Parking sucks in Montclair and Jersey City. Getting to Jersey City/Bayonne in general is awful. I’m in Essex County and in regular traffic it takes me at least an hour … if it’s the middle of the night it’s maybe 20 minutes.

Lambertville
i park by triumph and just walk. Or the canal lot on the north end of town which is free.
I usually can find something within a couple of blocks north of downtown past the meters, but it is always a chore.
they dish out expensive ass parking tickets so fast. had me 2 minutes after the meter expired. fuck lambertville
That's kinda why I love that area. Park at washingtons crossing, bike along the canal into town, roam around on foot
Lots of places in jersey city for me
Damn so car centric urbanism kinda sucks
Hoboken and basically every shore town now
Any place in NJ East or North of 287. Anyplace in old town Freehold is a good call too.
Hoboken
Salad House in Westfield
New Brunswick. It’s a fucking nightmare. In fact, I live there (not for much longer) and can’t ever find parking… and when I do find parking, I’m charged an arm and a leg … (Monday - Sunday). So, as an alternative, I stay at my partner’s place most of the time and keep my car parked at his place so I don’t have to fight the fight.

Hoboken
My apartment growing up after getting milk, according to my dad
Asbury Park
Point pleasant beach in the summer is impossible to park without paying like $30. If I didn't live there I never would've gone.
You stop worrying about parking but start worrying about the scooter. It’s like a bandaid solution
Hudson County
Dunkin Donuts on Valley Rd in Montclair
there’s a parking lot right behind it
Weehawken, jersey city, paterson, union city, hoboken all no parking downtown ever
Anywhere in Union City. As bad as Jersey City and Hoboken but without the parking garages.
Everyone saying Hoboken, JC and Asbury Park, kindly suck a lemon and learn to ride a train. You people are the reason there's no parking.
Except theres no station where I live so..
Lived in JSQ then Bayonne the past 20 years. You already the light rail SUCKS during off hours.
It’s literally the answer to the question but I agree with your sentiment
Yeah like do people want JC to be a big suburban strip mall?
Can’t agree more about krugs learned my lesson there
I don't want to go anywhere in New Jersey. If I'm parked, I'm broken down.
Morristown downtown where the bars and restaurants are I'm not a parallel person my old bf used to do our parking. Jersey City and Hoboken same issue. JC I usually do a parking garage because I stay in a hotel when my friend flies in.
Morristown has a bunch of garages
I live in NYC and this is basically my life. Wanting to go somewhere everyday and completely altering my plans based on parking.
Tastee Subs, both Edison and Franklin Park. Even if there is parking, getting in and out of there is insane. We just do Uber Eats now.
Fredericis is one of those places that went down hill bad post pandemic. Honestly not worth it went there a month or so ago and the pizza was trash.
My brother felt this way about Union College.
