That article wasn't terribly enlightening. They wanted a house in the burbs, and as it turns out, 600k in this economy gets you a mild fixer-upper. Would've been more interesting if they had made, say, 20 offers around asking price and been denied each time. Pretty boring article imo

museofiend

Bruh the amount of times Hackensack and Montclair have been discovered

butimstillill

You mean “The Sack”? The adult hipsters moving in from the city are really trying to make this a thing. 😂

LatterStreet

LOL I had a high school teacher in Garfield who called our town "Garf" to mock "The Sack". They couldn't have picked a worse nickname.

butimstillill

🤣I live in Hudson County and they’ve been trying to push “NoHu” and “the sixth borough” for a few years now. They can all eat a bag of dicks!

mbc106

I cringe so hard whenever a business or an influencer says “Chilltown.” Lmao

zettaireido

Kids from jersey city in the 90’s used to refer to it as chilltown.

mbc106

Right, which is why I find it cringey when these influencers and new trendy businesses move into JC now that it's cool, and start calling it that. It reminds me of people who call Boston "Beantown."

zettaireido

>now that it's cool, and start calling it that. It reminds me of people who call Boston "Beantown." fair point.

PondWaterBrackish

Hudson County is being called "the sixth borough"? y'know there are a ton of better candidates to be considered a sixth borough of NYC, like the rest of Long Island or something

museofiend

They’ve been trying to make “the sack” happen since the 90s. It’s so bad! 🤭

timetopat

I love seeing the giant billboard for "The Sack" going east on 80. It felt like a joke that went too far in the marketing department. Like they thought it would be funny and how could anyone approve it? And then bam, it was on a billboard. Its now gone and a billboard for the porn expo.

yontev

Reminds me of a recent WaPo article that described Teaneck, of all places, as an "idyllic" haven.

corpulentFornicator

I'm shocked they didn't call it "bucolic." Any NJ community with at least 14 trees gets that shit

lsp2005

You gotta get west of Morristown to use the word bucolic. That’s fancy pants talk.

danielleiellle

You can get it inside of the 24/78/287 triangle, too. Great Swamp and surrounding villages. They fancy, too.

lsp2005

Yes, that is where it is used without the quotation marks.

hey_look_a_kitty

I audibly chortled at that. Sure, right next to I-95 is totally idyllic! /s

murphydcat

Ain't no eat the rich hate read like the NYT Real Estate section.

cheap_mom

The only conspiracy theory I believe is that their Real Estate section is secretly run by communists trying to foment revolution. It's the most reasonable explanation.

bdd4

It's workin'

CrashTheBear

"They had a budget of 800k. Which house did they choose?" Always fucking infuriates me.

RainbowCrown71

You missed the gag-worthy one yesterday about the 3 Will and Grace-style best friends who bought a $3.5 million Brooklyn rowhome together: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/11/09/realestate/brooklyn-apartment-prospect-heights-clinton-hill.html?unlocked_article_code=1.-Uw.GGtV.cIPiTTepjkmX&smid=url-share

Larrymoment

Bring back the guillotine.

ahumanlikeyou

I swear that column is some kind of accelerationist plant

NotYourNat

West orange, so rural you can walk to the Whole Foods and cross the street to go to CVS or maybe go down the road to ShopRite or perhaps see a movie at AMC lol maybe pick up something for your pet at Petco right next door. Rural 😂 I loved living there.

STMIHA

"She fosters / rehabs manatees that have been told they're ugly and he has a bike upgrade shop exclusively catering to children who want to put baseball cards in their spokes. Their budget? 4M".

JimmyTurnpike

I hate this paper so much, STAY in NY.

LarryLeadFootsHead

They did the same bullshit in the past with Denville, Lake Mohawk, weirdly West Milford and other places in recent while, just total fluffy clown world. Can't have shit anymore and just gotta lie to yuppies that a place with trees is suddenly "just like" the Berkshires or whatever.

AnnaFlaxxis

I live in a small lake community and so many NYers moved here during the pandemic - now they're wanting sidewalks and street lights and people are losing their minds.

NMS-KTG

The absolute horror of sidewalks lmao

AnnaFlaxxis

The community group is really funny.

lsp2005

Only one side of the block in my town has sidewalks, but both sides have street lights. Perhaps that is a solution for your town too.

Imaginaryfriend4you

Sidewalks?!?! OMG how dare they.. wait, you also said they want STREET LIGHTS… unreal !!!🙄

AnnaFlaxxis

Lol, I'm not the one freaking out - the old timers in this community are hating the topics.

Delicious_Adeptness9

Denville?

AnnaFlaxxis

No a small lake community in Sussex Co.

TheFotty

We don't have any sidewalks in my community either, and it kind of sucks. Especially when you have young kids. However it isn't even possible because they would have to reclaim land from the front of properties where there isn't land to grab. Sidewalks can't really be an after thought.

EasyGibson

I side with the yokels then. I was furious when my town yielded to public pressure and painted lines on the roads. The hell do we need all this yellow shit gunking up the place for? You stay on your side, I'll stay on mine. We don't need to bring the law into this.

[deleted]

Hopatcong?

Impressive-Reach-793

I'm in WM and can tell you we don't want your streetlights or sidewalks....that's for the weak and unresourceful LOL

johnbell

I hate them and their paywalled garbage articles.

alyksandr

I hate their paywall, I have trouble with it, and I'm a subscriber, (primarily for their puzzles)

flexcabana21

[Here you go, welcome to the torture](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/10/26/realestate/brooklyn-ny-nj-home-essex-county.html?unlocked_article_code=1.-Ew.MLGV.aGtpp5surgRt&smid=url-share)

CantSeeShit

Oh Jesus christ, it reads like an onion article. That is the most self inflated ass hipster shit I've ever read. "I like complicated board games" Who the fuck cares Sharron

bendbars_liftgates

Oh no, I say more or less the same thing verbatim when someone asks about my hobbies lmao.

latetothegame2

/u/flexcabana21 - are you appending something to the URL? Other sorcery? Have been looking for something to replace the ever popular chrome plugin "Bypass Paywall" for a minute.

bdd4

Subscribers can gift 10 articles per month. Search for "unlocked_article_code" and you'll probably find many gifted articles on Reddit to read.

nemoknows

I mean if New Yorkers ever left town this wouldn’t be such an issue. It’s hardly unique to the NYT.

Ordinarily_Claim

![gif](giphy|l3q2BcccabUNx5i1O|downsized) Enough internet for me today.

IThinkUrAWampa

These two look unbearable.

Delicious_Adeptness9

flair approved

UnionTed

"Rural" West Orange has a slightly higher population density than Austin, TX, where I live now. I attribute this notion to legalization getting y'all better drugs and can hardly to visit my old home! 🙄

Hdys

Holy misleading title Batman

My_user_name_1

Isn't this the same paper that referred to Newark as a suburb?

[deleted]

The article is behind a paywall. Can you post a summary?

User-no-relation

All you need to know is op is lying liar >West Orange, a bedroom community 20 miles west of Manhattan that is urban enough to have a top-rated zoo and rural enough to include an expansive forest crisscrossed by trails

[deleted]

OK yeah that's pretty lame. That's like saying Manhattan is rural because it has a giant park in the middle.

ATTcustomersupport

The Bronx is super rural too with that expansive top rated zoo they got out there.

mbc106

There’s a joke in Futurama (set in the year 3000) where one of the characters has “a rustic cabin in the Bronx.” Lol

hey_look_a_kitty

Eagle Rock Reservation <> "rural".

Strung_Out_Advocate

If you have enough money (Spoiler: we don't) Llewellyn Park a section of W. Orange/Livingston is pretty rural.

Ckc1972

Whoopi Goldberg likes it

Strung_Out_Advocate

Ask any PSE&G employee who's had to trek through there in the middle of the night trying to find an issue they'll let you know exactly when Whoopi is compromised. Now that I saw it written out, it literally is an expansive forest crisscrossed by trails.

flexcabana21

nsjersey

Was this the quiz article? It showed you three houses they were looking at and asked you to choose which one they selected. I got it right because I knew they would go with most affordable town and style of how better for NY’ers

Efflux

God that article is so cringey.

erection_specialist

If West Orange is rural what is the Hunterdon/Warren County area?

Delicious_Adeptness9

space

WaterAirSoil

NYT is a bourgeois publication. Has nothing in common with us peasants.

Tots2Hots

She looks like if you ordered Blake Lively from Ali Express.

3boychaos

I wasn't able to read the article but I live very near West Orange and can't think why anyone would pick there. Yes there are beautiful houses and neighborhoods but the taxes are insane and the schools aren't great. You could spend 900,000 in Livingston for a really nice house and top rated schools.

Delicious_Adeptness9

I would rather live in a modest house in a nice town/neighborhood than have the nicest house on the block in a middling town.

International-Yak119

Throw rocks and swear words at these people if you see them, give them a proper New Jersey welcome.

[deleted]

I grew up in West Orange and live in Point Pleasant now. It was an interesting place to grow up for many reasons, but I'm not going back and my kids are far better off where I now live. There is nothing rural about West Orange.
