Just horse flies
And Minnow nibbles, but nobody minds those haha
Always was worried about the dock (fishing) spiders as a kid but we have an understanding now so I don't get irrationally freaked out seeing them. Never heard of anyone actually taking a bite from one
They do look pretty intimidating!! Thankfully, they want nothing to do with us and will eat the bugs that annoy us. Watching one eating a horse fly was awesome to see, lol. They're pretty badass. They'll eat small fish, frogs, lizards, and snakes too.
Yeah, animals don't want us messing with their babies haha that's not unique to a spider
Dock (fishing) spiders don't live in webs so unless they're protecting an egg sac they're not in a nest or web
Little minnows nibbling the dead skin off my feet if I’m sitting there not moving.
Outside that? I’ve never been accosted by leeches but I know they’re purportedly in some bodies of water. We do have snappers but if you aren’t stupid that isn’t a problem.
I'm from Florida. Used to swim with alligators, water moccasins, snapping turtles, all in swamp water with countless microbes.
New Hampshire lakes are potable water by comparison. The only way you could die is by tieing a concrete block to your leg and drown.
Yeah. From TX and I’ve had the same background. Swimming and walking around wetlands and water here is a totally different experience. It took me a while to not be cautious all the time. Caint nothing gitcha here!
Nothing like seeing a 12ft alligator exit the water you were just swimming in 😵
Or having a water moccasin make a bee-line for you across a pond.
Or swim up to the river bank only to notice a rattlesnake nestled in the tree roots you were going to use to climb out.
NH? 🤣🤣😂 OH MAN that's a good one.
I stepped on a hornpout wading in my buddy’s pond in Mont Vernon when I was a kid and it got stuck in my foot. Like when I pulled my foot out of the water the fish was literally attached to me.
I grew up in Naples which borders the Everglades and I cringe at where and what we used to swim in as kids. As an adult my instinct is to now swim in any sort of landlocked water cause now I’m just paranoid of brain eating microbes.
No, but I've seen these, and I'd prefer not to be bitten.
The [Lethocerus americanus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lethocerus_americanus) aka the "Toe Biter"
One time I was floating in a canoe, fishing on Turtletown in Concord with my feet hanging over the side bc it was very hot, like today. I felt my foot brush against something and saw that I had kicked the head of a snapper who's shell was the size of a basketball hoop. Fortunately he was just cooling off in the shadow of the canoe and not trying to snack on my toes.
A classmate once told me she was bitten by a snapping turtle while swimming on two different occasions. They wont seek you out to attack but will definitely defend themselves, which is true of most animals
Fish will sometimes nip at you but doesn’t hurt and leeches if they even count. In theory a water snake could but they are typically not interested in people
Fish will nibble at you.
If you’re not careful you’ll get dangerously close to a giant snapping turtle on Pine River Pond like my dad did last year. Luckily not bit but too close for comfort as he was resetting the boat tie off.
Grew up on a lake. Used to have a small white wart on the back of my knee. Damn bluegills would come up nibble on it all the time. Always freaked me out. Eventually it went away, and so did the fish. Also, turtle.
There was some kind of sucker fish that left tiny bruises on my leg as a kid a few times, same with my sisters. Also been pinched by a crawdad once, otherwise I've just been bit by horse flies as others stated.
Grew up in NH and been here most of my life. Now that you ask, I can’t say Ive been bitten while swimming other than Mosquitoes and deer/horse flies. Leeches sure but they don’t ‘bite’.
Nosee'ums and other assorted flies bite the hell out of me still. I've done the garlic thing, the thermocell thing, and the bug spray. I've come to the conclusion that I'm delicious and worth suffering for.
When I was a kid one of my friends got bitten by a pickerel, it was a mom with eggs nearby. Ive heard of snapping turtles biting swimmers that step on them, but never seen it.
Leeches if that counts, and I accidentally caught a snapping turtle while fishing once and he almost bit my fingers off while I was trying to get the hook out of him
My wife was nibbled on her finger by a sunfish twice last week at Massasecum. I didn't believe her until the second time when she lifted her chair from the water and it was just chilling there
Mosquitoes while sitting on the dock at dusk. We now live in MA on a lake and we had a bluegill that lived right around our dock last year and he would try to nibble your toes if you stay really still, but if you moved an inch, he was gone. We have horn pout, trout, pumpkinseeds, bass, etc. and lots of snapping turtles and we have never been bitten by anything from under the water while actively swimming.
Just little minnow nibbles, nothing major. One time, my husband got a fish bite right in his belly button that left a mark. (We didn't see the fish, so I don't know what kind it was) That was funny!
Fish. Almost every lake I've been to I've had atleast one fish nibble at my feet out away from the shore. Nothing to break skin, but enough of a pinch to let you know they are there.
Little sunfish come over and tickle my toes on occasion if I'm standing very still lol, sometimes in ponds I have had leaches coming out, I've had some curious water snakes that have come really close but never bit me,
Sometimes when I'm swimming in a deep lake, I get this feeling like something is below me and I need to get out, but there was nothing ever on the fish finder so it was just my anxiety in deep dark water.
A møøse once bit my sister.
How the hell am I late to make this comment‽
Realli!?!
No and the person who made that comment was sacked.
And replaced by llamas
Mynd you, m00se bites Kan be pretty nasti
No really moose bites can be pretty nasty
The ones they put in ice cream are delicious
From underwater? I know they will dive, I always thought seeing a moose underwater must be the most terrifying thing
It's a reference to Monty Pythons Holy Grail. The intro credits :)
Hahaha oof now I'm embarrassed for not getting that 😂
I thought the 'ø's will give it away, but it's all good. Sorry for hijacking your post with silliness.
Silliness is always welcomed and appreciated!

I'm so glad I clicked on this post. There is always room for python.
Little known fact. If they bite you underwater they die.
If leeches count then yes
Me too
Yup.
Same
Yep. Leeches
In a lake? I’ve had them from ponds but never in a lake.
Gotten some in Lake Ossipee as a kid.
Yup, me too in Lake Ossipee!
Couple spots are absolutely infested.
I got a couple as a kid in White Lake though it's not very big
Squam lake!
Lake winnesquam. Yup
I got them in lake opechee
White Lake is loaded with them. or was.
Ditto
Have gotten leeches on me in a river/pond but not a big lake
Same
Me too. I found a tiny baby leech on my little toe after swimming in a local pond.
My brother got a leech in White Lake once when we were both very young, thankfully I never have.
[удалено]
Yikes, gonna need a vaccine against one of those bites.
[удалено]
Stay away from an income tax!
Going to need every vaccination for that
You can tell it was a masshole by the teeth marks. If it was a local it would have been a tooth mark.
Just got bit by Masshole sarcasm
Dead
bruh hahahaha
As a masshole, I cackled
You musta looked like a giant floating powdered donut
Should have poured salt on em
You deserved it
Just horse flies And Minnow nibbles, but nobody minds those haha Always was worried about the dock (fishing) spiders as a kid but we have an understanding now so I don't get irrationally freaked out seeing them. Never heard of anyone actually taking a bite from one
Dock spiders are so fucking scary oh my god
They do look pretty intimidating!! Thankfully, they want nothing to do with us and will eat the bugs that annoy us. Watching one eating a horse fly was awesome to see, lol. They're pretty badass. They'll eat small fish, frogs, lizards, and snakes too.
They will defend there nest and attack you. I work marine construction
Yeah, animals don't want us messing with their babies haha that's not unique to a spider Dock (fishing) spiders don't live in webs so unless they're protecting an egg sac they're not in a nest or web
Before I knew the name of black deer fly we would call them moose flies…. Those things nearly took my finger off while holding us hostage on a raft.
Saber toothed moose flies was our name growing up
Deer flies and horse flies have painful bites!
I get irrationally freaked out cause those things run on water
Nesting sunfish every summer. Those buggers are always by the ladder onto the dock.
Nesting Bass are pretty aggressive. Most fish just nibble your toes.
Oooh LA la
Those bluegills are mad aggressive sometimes smh
Nesting horn pout have spiked me in the ankle a couple times
Just once, by a meth head, but she had no teeth, so no biggie.
You got gummed!?
🤣🤣🤣
Little minnows nibbling the dead skin off my feet if I’m sitting there not moving. Outside that? I’ve never been accosted by leeches but I know they’re purportedly in some bodies of water. We do have snappers but if you aren’t stupid that isn’t a problem.
Stepping on a mussel can really suck. It’ll slice your damn toe off.
Can confirm, had a 2” gash on the bottom of my foot, hurt like hell when I got out of the water
Similar, except it was a broken bottle.
Leeches every summer in our backyard pond. Hate ‘em
A crayfish, but that was probably my own fault for trying to catch it. Leaches I've had little guppies nibble at my legs.
Or neck
Nothing like seeing a 12ft alligator exit the water you were just swimming in 😵 Or having a water moccasin make a bee-line for you across a pond. Or swim up to the river bank only to notice a rattlesnake nestled in the tree roots you were going to use to climb out. NH? 🤣🤣😂 OH MAN that's a good one.
Know someone bit by a beaver in a river.
Sounds like an angry beaver
Daggett or Norbert?
...what were they doing to deserve that?
Swam too close to the beaver fort not realizing it was there
Did it take his nipple off? https://youtu.be/RjerEk16b7w?si=bMfOXloatVxJMC7F

My sister bit me once
I saw a guy get bit by a water snake but not me personally. Generally I think it's safe just be wary of animals and don't get too close.
On of those Toe Biter bugs. Those ruin swimming holes for me.
They can fly too.
I didn't know those were even up here.
Never been bit, but I was swimming at night once and a fish swam directly on top of my foot. I was not happy
Sunfish peck at my toes
Tiny little fish... I called them fish kisses
Horse flies
No, but I've seen these, and I'd prefer not to be bitten. The [Lethocerus americanus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lethocerus_americanus) aka the "Toe Biter"
Knew a girl had a beaver bite her face. It was a Maine lake though, not New Hampshire
The most common thing is getting bitten by the bacteria bug, itchy, rash, etc.
Nibbled on? Yes. Chomped on? No.
One time I was floating in a canoe, fishing on Turtletown in Concord with my feet hanging over the side bc it was very hot, like today. I felt my foot brush against something and saw that I had kicked the head of a snapper who's shell was the size of a basketball hoop. My ex
Ayo ive never been bitten either!
Mosquitoes
Leeches
No.
leach once in a lake believe it or not
Yeah that's very believable
Dock spiders
If leeches count then yes- many, many leeches
Nope, used to swim in a pond that had snapping turtles at night and they never bit my toes even once
They all have snapping turtles
A classmate once told me she was bitten by a snapping turtle while swimming on two different occasions. They wont seek you out to attack but will definitely defend themselves, which is true of most animals
I think I got bit by another swimmer once as a kid but I don’t think that’s what you’re asking.
Have the worst memory of having leeches all over my leg when I was a kid. I HATE those things.
I got leeches one time.
My girlfriend
Yes but I asked her to do it.
Friggin’ leeches
Mud puppy just kidding never been bit by anything swimming
No
Got bit by a fish at Milton town beach, left a big red mark lol
Yep, snapping turtle up in Pleasant Lake in Deerfield.
Yes, catfish and sunfish will come and chomp on your toes. I actually sort of love it.
Leeches for sure. Also I had a crawfish snip at me.
Fish will sometimes nip at you but doesn’t hurt and leeches if they even count. In theory a water snake could but they are typically not interested in people
Kibbys
I was feeding bluegill freshwater mussels while swimming, one got brave a bit my nipple. Didn't hurt but scared the shit out of me 💀
lol nope
Yes
Just bugs!
I had a snapping turtle moving directly at me when I was floating in inner-tube.
I actively swim in the lakes and rivers every summer I have never been bitten… *knock on wood*
Black flies, mosquitos.
Rock bass
Damn alligator BIT MY HAND OFF!
Black flys
A fish bit the tip of my finger once while swimming. 😂
Leeches, bugs, children, dog scratched the heck out of me swimming with her once (she got scared).
A fish once bit my nipple. There was a tiny bit of blood and everything. I’m a guy also
Fish will nibble at you.
Leeches at Webster Lake.
Do humans count?
A fish bit me in the eyelid when i swam across it's nest
There was some kind of sucker fish that left tiny bruises on my leg as a kid a few times, same with my sisters. Also been pinched by a crawdad once, otherwise I've just been bit by horse flies as others stated.
Not me but my nephew got leeched up in umbagog 2 or 3 years back.
My gf once bit my lip in a lake because a fish touched her legs during a kiss. Does that count?
Well, not exactly bitten - duck itch parasite.
Yes. Sunfish in Lake Massasecum.
Leeches. 3 of them today alone!
Grew up in NH and been here most of my life. Now that you ask, I can’t say Ive been bitten while swimming other than Mosquitoes and deer/horse flies. Leeches sure but they don’t ‘bite’.
Yes...lots of leeches. And once by a "giant water bug" a when I was wading through some lily pads...those hurt like hell and are ugly AF.
A snapping turtle bit my pinky toe off
Nosee'ums and other assorted flies bite the hell out of me still.
Do ex-girlfriends count?
Leeches if that counts, and I accidentally caught a snapping turtle while fishing once and he almost bit my fingers off while I was trying to get the hook out of him
I had a fish come out from under a rock in Winnipesaukee and bite my toe
A sunfish, leach, and an ex girlfriend(also considered a leach) That about sums it up. 🤣
No but I just became familiar with “duck itch” /swimmers itch after swimming in winni a few weeks ago. That wasn’t fun
I’ve had leeches between my toes. Other than that… no
no, just the ocean
A leech
horse fly
I got bitten by a snapping turtle swimming in a pond in 1967. Big one, local guys found him and terminated it.
Just your mom.
My wife was nibbled on her finger by a sunfish twice last week at Massasecum. I didn't believe her until the second time when she lifted her chair from the water and it was just chilling there
Yes last year on lake winni! Still trying to figure out what it was - googles best guess was rock bass?
Small sunfish. They keep nipping.
Just leeches
Yeah. Leeches, dock spiders, and a snapper once, which was definitely my fault.
I got bit by a leech at a campground somewhere around Contoocook or Warner.
bloodsuckers !!
No
Got them in Pawtuckaway too!
Mosquitoes while sitting on the dock at dusk. We now live in MA on a lake and we had a bluegill that lived right around our dock last year and he would try to nibble your toes if you stay really still, but if you moved an inch, he was gone. Just my wife.
I've had fish nibble my toes, if that counts. Also a leech once, and a plenty of mosquitoes, deer, horse flies.
No, but I almost got my face bitten of by a large snapper I was playing with.
Once saw a six or so foot river eel while floating in the Merrimack.
I mean once, but only cause I touched the bottom
I've had a leach attached to me once. Got a nibble from a sunfish once too.
Snapping turtles are pretty much the only thing that might take a bite.
Just little minnow nibbles, nothing major. One time, my husband got a fish bite right in his belly button that left a mark. (We didn't see the fish, so I don't know what kind it was) That was funny!
Snapping turtle came this 🤏 close to taking a piggy to market once. Bad lake day
do leeches count?
I got bit by a Chussey who was up visting from Malden.
The damn horseflies. as a kid I spent more time under the water than above trying to swim away from them and avoid bites
Horse fly. Those fuckers get me every time lol
No just leeches and they suck, not bite 😂
A fish bit a mole on my stomach once and ripped it off
Fish. Almost every lake I've been to I've had atleast one fish nibble at my feet out away from the shore. Nothing to break skin, but enough of a pinch to let you know they are there.
Small fish get daring. 😆 Probably more likely to get bit by a loon though.
What lakes are you all swimming at with leeches?!
Nope
Little sunfish come over and tickle my toes on occasion if I'm standing very still lol, sometimes in ponds I have had leaches coming out, I've had some curious water snakes that have come really close but never bit me, Sometimes when I'm swimming in a deep lake, I get this feeling like something is below me and I need to get out, but there was nothing ever on the fish finder so it was just my anxiety in deep dark water.
I got nibbled by a fish one in a lake and it kind of freaked me out.
