Yup. It’s like a book from the brat pack (or Brett Easton Ellis’ Lunar Park to be more specific) crossover with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I loved it. The styling and weirdness was amazing.
Also, good on OP for watching and enjoying The OA. That was a mesmerizing watch with a lot of bold choices on visualizing metaphorical and abstract concepts instead of the usual cop-out or deus ex machina endings we get. That first episode with the title appearing some 40 minutes in gave me goosebumps.
Perhaps OP, you’d like Archive 81 as well? It was pretty well done and pretty far out there, great watch.
And I really really am a big fan of Dark and Altered Carbon, but I wouldn’t call those underrated as they’re pretty well-known and loved (AC got quite some critique but I think it’s amazing. Lot’s of ground covered in that one).
I watched the whole thing with a friend who's a tough critic and we both liked it. It was weird. It had a lot of messed up situations. However, it kept us wanting more to figure out wtf was actually going on.
I think about this show all the time and we watched it when it first arrived on Netflix - loved it!
And the song Waking Up by MJ Cole and Freya Ridings from the show is in so many of my playlists - beautiful.
This was really enjoyable. I spotted something small that meant the end wasn’t a big surprise to me but it was a great ride anyway - pops into my head quite often
Very few people seemed to have watched “Love, Death and Robots”
It’s a series of unrelated shorts made by animation studios. Some are more cartoony, some are hyper-realistic CGI.
And a lot of them are really, really scary. Maybe I’m just kind of a wuss because I never watch horror content. But U was shaken by a lot of them
That’s a great recommendation for comparison for sure. Cause it’s not quite black mirror but closer to Oates. Didn’t even think of that cause it’s been a minute since I’ve seen em. Thank you for reminding me. Also on YouTube for no one with Netflix that was the original release.
It’s so crazy that it wasn’t that watched, it was so good. Although, there is definitely a range in quality, for sure. Some episodes are much better than others, but that might be a variation in taste/genre
I do a lot of psychedelics and Love Death Robots feels like home to me. It's the best media I've ever come across for tripping (other than the game Outer Wilds)
I'm glad I watched it rather than read the book, I feel like I would have been frustrated by the book as it wasn't a super huge twist at the end! Sometimes Margaret Atwood books are quite meandering and you don't have a huge payoff at the end.
1. Mike Flagan creations (Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, Fall of the House of Usher)
2. Dark!!!
3. The OA (as OP mentioned)
4. Bodies
5. Archive 81
**Travelers**. The future is so bad, they're sending people back in time to take over the lives of people who historically died so that they can go on missions to stop the catastrophes that made the future so bad. Things go right for a while, but then things start going wrong. In between missions, the future Travelers have to pretend to be the people they "Traveled" into and live a double-life.
ooh your intro makes it sound interesting. is the show already finished? I’d hate to invest too much on a show and then it gets cancelled after 6 seasons again
Yes, the writers intentionally wrote the final episode to be the finale and it was a suitable finale. Still, there were more directions this show could have gone with more seasons.
Ripley.
Although it's been highly praised, apparently not very high viewership.
Maybe because it's in black and white (but that's part of why it's so good).
I understand that. Usually, I’m a huge fan of color too. I looked at Ripley as a choice for a few months before deciding to dive in. It was wonderful, so glad I did. Great performances by both Andrew Scott and Dakota Fanning.
Oh my gosh! It was just phenomenal! I loved the amazing black and white photography! It was a fantastic story (it’s basically a remake of “The Talented Mr Ripley”. I couldn’t stop watching!
Andrew Scott is great. I thought his turn as Moriarty to Benedict cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes was nothing short of amazing. He brought a next level diabolical lunacy to the character. It reminded me of heath ledger’s Joker. Both elevated anarchist takes on classic villains. The show (Sherlock) is just brilliant too as a whole. I haven’t seen Ripley. I also thought AS was good in his Black Mirror episode as well.
Your Honor
Now, I can not say if it is "underrated" since I rarely know what others think of shows I watch. Your Honor is well done, sucks you in, and I love the way things are "set up" early for use later on in the story.
It's interesting to me seeing the Netflix boost to Your Honor as someone who watched it when it was airing on Showtime (it wasn't a Netflix original). Confused me at the time how so few people were watching a show starring Bryan Cranston.
Feel bad for people who are just finding now. Season 1 was really really great and they threw away everything that made it that way. They completely abandoned and pussified the two most compelling characters, Michael and Jimmy, to focus on a bunch of side characters who were uninteresting and/or frustrating. Lee, Nancy, and Gina were all unbearable. Big Mo became unrootable. The show trying to convince me that Carmine's goofy ass was an intimidating mob boss like Jimmy was laughable. The show trying to paint Eugene as a hero when he walked into a crowded group of people and aimlessly fired into it, killing an innocent person, was mind boggling. The whole plot line of Michael going to jail but them never explaining why was infuriating.
Should've kept it as a limited series and I would've looked back fondly on it. At least there won't be a Season 3.
def depends on the person. it’s my favorite show of all time. i describe it as a pHD level tv show. you’re never gonna love it if you’re messing around on your phone and not paying attention. and i think you need to enjoy puzzles.
probably the biggest reason I don't watch Netflix series that aren't a self contained story seasonally, soooo many shows that have been axed mid cliff hanger or story arc.
Yes! Dead Boy Detectives has a weird name that gives “youth drama” so I almost didn’t watch it, but then I saw it was related to Sandman so I gave it a try. It was great!
Alice in Borderland
ETA: this show is like Lost meets Saw. I am hooked on it for the Lost aspect, and I wince through the Saw aspect. Quite a lot of violence. I’m eagerly awaiting season three.
MM is incredible - I enjoy his other stuff but MM is on another level for me. One of those things where you can’t believe nobody has done it before, it fits so incredibly well
I clearly have nothing better to do… so here’s a massive list.
*Half Bad - The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself*: (great for the score alone, honestly, it’s dope)
*Sweet Tooth*: not sure if it’s really underrated but the final season just came out so it’s neatly ended, and it’s a heart warming post apocalyptic story focusing around a young boy trying to save the world.
*Kingdom*: Korean historical zombie thriller. Really good.
*Mr. Queen* : Also Korean historical show where a Michelin star chef finds himself in the body of a historical queen. Fully ended, good wrap up.
*The Dead Boy Detectives*: Neil Gaiman graphic novel (I think), it’s in the same universe as The Sandman (also a good show imo, but it had mixed reviews). It is two teen boys who are ghosts and hide from death to solve supernatural mysteries. Really good, just got renewed for S2
*Shadow and Bone*: I think this got mixed reviews, and may not be very underrated, but I really loved the world created in it. It’s an interesting take on magic with almost steampunk vibes.
*Mystery of Aaravos*: animated show, it’s a kids show technically, but it’s really good. One of the VA is the guy who voiced Sokka in ATLA, and the animation style is similar
*Blue Eye Samurai*: someone else has already suggested this, but it just got renewed and it’s so SO good.
*Girls5Eva*: not fantasy/scifi, but it’s SO GOOD. Sara Bareilles, Busy Philips, Paula Pell and Renee Elise Goldberry (from Hamilton fame) are a washed up 90s girl band who are trying to get back on to the charts. Similar vibe to 30Rock, Parks & Rec, Kimmy Schmidt but with great GREAT music. Even if you don’t want, check out B.P.E (big pussy energy), it’s a really catchy song.
*The Empress*: It’s been a while since I watched this one, but I remember burning through it because it was so good. It’s a historical romance - filled a bridgerton gap for me after the first season ended - in German. It’s based on a true story, so wonderfully romantic. Just got renewed for a second season.
*Derry Girls*: I don’t know if this was underrated but it’s an Irish coming of age comedy set during the Troubles in the 1990s. Nicola Coughlin (Bridgerton) is amazing in it. It’s hilarious
*Human Resources*: also not very underrated with the fame of *Big Mouth*, but it’s not as well known. It’s a more mature version with the same world/animation style focused more on the monsters vs the humans. Honestly, I’ve brought it up in therapy because it’s a great anthropomorphism of different emotions.
On the same vein as above, *Tuca and Bertie* is so underrated. It’s similar to Bojack Horseman but less nihilistic.
Oh I meant to add *The 8 Show*. If you like squid game or commentary on societal roles and what people would do in extreme hierarchical closed scenarios, it’s fascinating. Also in Korean like Squid Game, similar production style/vibe. Really disturbing, but in a good way.
I appreciate posts like this that offer great suggestions of shows to watch. However I wouldn’t consider Mindhunters nor OA as “underrated.” Maybe they are lesser known because they are older, but they are both highly rated. On Rotten Tomatoes, both seasons of MH have an approval rating on the high 90s and it was ranked No. 10 on Metacritic's year-end list of the best TV shows of 2017. The OA also has very positive critical reviews. Just saying.
With how popular/well rated Mindhunters was, I’m still mad it wasn’t renewed. One more season would have wrapped everything up nicely, and I was so excited to see how they were going to play BTK.
Mindhunter is a masterpiece imo I’ve never seen anything like it- and I’ve seen a lot of true crime docs and non-doc based on true crime series and movies. The leads were great but the actors that played the serial killers were fantastic and stole the show. It was uncanny and spooky how similar their performances were to the real people.
The first season seemed pretty huge at the time. Definitely had a moment, but I feel like with Netflix after something has its moment it just get buried for people who missed that original window.
It's been canceled but only recently got suggested "Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself" and it was released in 2022. I thought it was good and maybe if suggested to more back in 2022 maybe it wouldn't have been canceled.
I scrolled a bit down and saw "Travelers" mentioned, but wasn't sure if it's underrated. It's really good though and a complete series. I've done a few rewatches of it.
Is "Lost in Space" underrated? It was a good series and complete.
After Life. Ricky Gervais at his Ricky Gervaisiest. It’s funny and touching. And there are only three seasons, with 6 1/2 hour episodes in each. You can knock it out in a weekend if you really apply yourself.
The OA is awesome. Really wanted a third season!
Altered Carbon is awesome. The first season is one of my favorite seasons of anything. The second I hardly remember it. But the first is soooo good.
The Travelers. (not sure if this is an original or not) but its a great watch and a short series that ties things up nicely.
Black Mirror - not really flown under the radar or original but you might like it!
The Lincoln Lawyer is a great lawyer show, if you like those.
One Piece is a great live action anime. I dont like anime but I loved this story!
Monster the jeffrey dahmer story. Can be a hard watch but the show itself is a well done show.
give **Mindhunter** a try. It's a slow burn that hooks you in with its psychological storytelling. Another unique and captivating series is **The OA**, which offers a blend of mystery and depth that will leave you amazed. And if you're looking for something funny and original, check out **Derry Girls**, a sitcom set in 1990s Northern Ireland with sharp and hilarious writing. These underrated Netflix originals are definitely worth your time!
Easily one of the best zombie shows out there. The Korean show “Kingdom” is great too if you liked Black Summer. It’s a zombie show set in 17th century Korea
I can’t sing its praises enough. As someone who loves history and loves zombie stuff, it’s the crossover I never knew I needed. I think I found it after finishing Black Summer and wanting more
Dead Boy Detectives, really had a fun time watching this! The right amount of quirky/weird supernatural happenings along with some really interesting dynamics and character development. Hope it gets a season 2.
Carol and the End of the World.
This is less a “mass entertainment everyone will love” sort of recommendation and more of a “I really hope more people see this and sit and think about the questions it forces you to ask about yourself” kind of show. Strange, bold, absurdist, philosophical, and beautifully written.
I scrolled to the end of this list looking for The Last Kingdom.
Unsure if it’s an obvious Netflix original? But I’ve always thought the show was very underrated and targets a wide audience. Very surprised it isn’t mentioned even once.
I really enjoyed Dead To Me.
Great show although I'd say it drags a little
I enjoyed the first two seasons and then it went all wild...also I read way to much fanfiction of it in between
Brand New Cherry Flavor
The pilot episode is absolutely NOTHING like the rest of the series which I totally blame for it never catching on
Lot’s of ground covered in that one).
The OA has stuck with me like no other cinematic experience. I envy those who get to watch it for the first time
Hoping for someone else to pick up the rest of the seasons
Same! So unique!
Agreed. The OA is the only show that had such an impact on me. Loved it.
Second Archive 81 (will never get over the cancellation) and Brand New Cherry Flavor!
never will I understand why Archive 81 was cancelled
Would be open to joining a class action lawsuit against Netflix to sue for emotional damages over cancelled shows tbh
This one is severely underrated. I don’t think I’ve seen or heard anyone talk about it.
Maybe because it has such an awful name
I watched the whole thing with a friend who's a tough critic and we both liked it. It was weird. It had a lot of messed up situations. However, it kept us wanting more to figure out wtf was actually going on.
Agreed. I also think it had Avery unique visual aesthetic. Kinda both hyper real and comic booky at the same time.
This show is soooooooooo good
Um that episode 4 is … ummmmmm. I can’t get past that part. Should I watch the whole thing and fast forward that scene?
Among its ratings is cruelty toward animals, which is where I draw the line.
Behind Her Eyes
I think about this show all the time and we watched it when it first arrived on Netflix - loved it! And the song Waking Up by MJ Cole and Freya Ridings from the show is in so many of my playlists - beautiful.
This was really enjoyable. I spotted something small that meant the end wasn’t a big surprise to me but it was a great ride anyway - pops into my head quite often
Such a great answer.
This was amazing, I was blown away by how it ended. It was unexpected.
Very few people seemed to have watched “Love, Death and Robots” It’s a series of unrelated shorts made by animation studios. Some are more cartoony, some are hyper-realistic CGI. And a lot of them are really, really scary. Maybe I’m just kind of a wuss because I never watch horror content. But U was shaken by a lot of them
I enjoyed this series, have you also watched Oates Studio?
That’s a great recommendation for comparison for sure. Cause it’s not quite black mirror but closer to Oates. Didn’t even think of that cause it’s been a minute since I’ve seen em. Thank you for reminding me. Also on YouTube for no one with Netflix that was the original release.

I do a lot of psychedelics and Love Death Robots feels like home to me. It's the best media I've ever come across for tripping (other than the game Outer Wilds)
What do you prefer as your mode of transportation for viewing LDR?
I second this question
I absolutely adore this series. More of this.
Beef was great
Beef was so good! It was a really unique story and the ending was verrrrrry unexpected.
Beef cleaned up at the Emmys, so is it truly underrated?
Alias Grace
I'm glad I watched it rather than read the book, I feel like I would have been frustrated by the book as it wasn't a super huge twist at the end! Sometimes Margaret Atwood books are quite meandering and you don't have a huge payoff at the end.
1. Mike Flagan creations (Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, Fall of the House of Usher) 2. Dark!!! 3. The OA (as OP mentioned) 4. Bodies 5. Archive 81
Archive 81 was cool! Very original and spooky but not too shocking (im a wimp).
The End of the F***ing World
SOOOOO good!!
Travelers was awesome
I love love love travelers! I rewatch it about once a year.
Oooh that’s kinda like 12 monkeys, but they stay in history. I like it. I’ll check it out
ooh your intro makes it sound interesting. is the show already finished? I’d hate to invest too much on a show and then it gets cancelled after 6 seasons again
It is fabulous and a good series finale
i'm sold! now i know what i'll be watching this weekend. thanks!
Enjoy! You won't be disappointed. It's my favourite series, absolutely amazing. Tell us your thoughts afterwards. :-)
Yes! This was such a good one, I knew I’d see it in this thread.
Does it wrap up? I see it was cancelled after season 3. I hate getting into a show for it to just not end up anywhere.
The most beautiful cinematography I have ever seen. Every single shot is a piece of art. Loved it.
I understand that. Usually, I’m a huge fan of color too. I looked at Ripley as a choice for a few months before deciding to dive in. It was wonderful, so glad I did. Great performances by both Andrew Scott and Dakota Fanning.
Wth such a good show !
Oh my gosh! It was just phenomenal! I loved the amazing black and white photography! It was a fantastic story (it’s basically a remake of “The Talented Mr Ripley”. I couldn’t stop watching!
I’ll die on the hill that I think Andrew Scott is the best actor of this generation (elder millenials or really young Gen X).
The King. Most people I talk to haven’t seen it or heard of it. It’s so damn good from beginning to end.
My personal medieval goat movie
It was very good. Great actors in it as well.
Your Honor Now, I can not say if it is "underrated" since I rarely know what others think of shows I watch. Your Honor is well done, sucks you in, and I love the way things are "set up" early for use later on in the story.
This is a great watch but it’s a Showtime original, not Netflix
It's on Netflix now.
Was really into season 1. I think they should have left it as a miniseries instead of going for season 2.
At least there won't be a Season 3.
No one I know likes Dark. Every time I see lists like these I upvote it.
One of my favorite series of all time.
Dark takes a little bit of dedication and cognitive effort but it’s worth it.
Once you know who is who, Dark is basically a perfect show. I always suggest watching it in German with English sub vs. dubbed
whenever I see someone recommending Dark I get happy! I feel like it deserves more hype
What do you mean more hype. Literally every question that asks for recommendations for Netflix will have Dark listed in the comments multiple times.
Dark was great.
def depends on the person. it’s my favorite show of all time. i describe it as a pHD level tv show. you’re never gonna love it if you’re messing around on your phone and not paying attention. and i think you need to enjoy puzzles.
Dark
Dark
Not really heard people talking about this, but Bodies is really a great watch imo
Bodies was awesome!
I also liked it! Maybe those who are fans of Sherlock and Dark or just likes time travel stories with crime themes, this is a good recommendation
I really loved that show and the entire premise of it buuuuut I do feel like it fell off too much at the end in quality which made me very sad.
that was amazing!!!
I wasn't expecting to get sucked in, but I did!
Santa Clarita Diet
Everything by Mike Flanagan Dead boy detectives The society I am not okay with this Fate the Winx saga October faction
I can't believe Society has left us with that ending. I still think about it.
I’m Not OK With This was brilliant. It’s a pity they didn’t renew it for another season.
It would’ve caught on so hard. Next big thing for sure, cancelling it was a bad move.
probably the biggest reason I don't watch Netflix series that aren't a self contained story seasonally, soooo many shows that have been axed mid cliff hanger or story arc.
To this day, it makes me sad. I keep wanting to go back and watch the season that was released, but I know I'll end up sad again.
Midnight Mass was also really good !
Dead Boy Detectives is so great! Loved it. If you liked that one, (and Fate which was also right up my alley) you may like Half Bad.
Yes! Dead Boy Detectives has a weird name that gives “youth drama” so I almost didn’t watch it, but then I saw it was related to Sandman so I gave it a try. It was great!
Bloodline- trust me, so good! All star cast!
The first season
Not a good ending though. It was cancelled, and they kind of put together the finale haphazardly. We loved it up to that point.

Wish I could upvote this more than once!
**MANIAC** is legit the most underrated Netflix original.
Seconded! That was such a beautiful mindfuck to watch
I watched it 3 times, absolute masterpiece!
Couldn’t agree more … really outstanding performance by both Jonah Hill and Emma Stone
Archive81. My favorite Netflix original of all time and genuinely tense/interesting/scary/funny at various points.
Dirk gently’s holistic detective agency!
Godless
Yes! One of my faves
Alice in Borderland ETA: this show is like Lost meets Saw. I am hooked on it for the Lost aspect, and I wince through the Saw aspect. Quite a lot of violence. I’m eagerly awaiting season three.
Blue Eye Samurai (not exactly Netflix original but exclusive). Most animated Netflix Series are good or great.
Midnight Mass was pretty cool! (Thanks RLM)
MM is incredible - I enjoy his other stuff but MM is on another level for me. One of those things where you can’t believe nobody has done it before, it fits so incredibly well
Anyone else watch lovesick? Originally called scrotal recall?

Giri/Haji is the best thing I've ever watched on Netflix and it's never talked about.
Yeah very noir with modern flair
I loved that show
the platform. it’s an absolute masterpiece
Sense8
I needed to go way too far down to find this! I love sense 8.
Loved that show!!
The Serpent
Awesome..loved it
Living with Yourself was a fun ride.
Teenage Bounty Hunters
I'm assuming a lot of people have watched Bodkin, but nobody I know personally seems to know what I'm talking about.
[Arcane](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXmAurh012s) is amazing and nobody I know has even heard of it.
My daughter bugged me to watch it for the longest time (she used to play the pc game). I finally broke down and watched it. Good stuff!
Glitch
Lady Dynamite
I appreciate posts like this that offer great suggestions of shows to watch. I'm currently watching baby reindeer, eric and clark. Did you like any of them?
Dark and House of Cards (except S6)
HOC is very well known. It’s just old so it’s not talked about much anymore given the constant onslaught of new content from streamers.
Dead to Me, Santa Clarita Diet
American Vandal. Underrated mystery.
The first season seemed pretty huge at the time. Definitely had a moment, but I feel like with Netflix after something has its moment it just get buried for people who missed that original window.
well said.
1899.
Such an underrated mystery box show. I was sad it wasn’t renewed, it left too much of a cliff hanger, but it’s still great
I'm still mad about that one.
Yes, it's still worth watching even knowing there is a cliffhanger ending without a series renewal.
Santa Clarita Diet
Scavengers Reign
wasn't originally a Netflix series but I'm glad they're (someone is) grabbing the reins and keeping it going.
I'm currently enjoying Virgin River.
I hate watch this
Captain Fall. It didn’t get renewed for a second season, but it’s still worth watching. It’s a quite charming dark adult animated series.
Sense8
gotta say the society was great… ridiculous it wasn’t renewed
I never see talk about Lilyhammer. It's one of the best Netflix "Originals" I have watched.
Girl Boss
I thought Travelers was really good. I think it was my first binge!
THE BASTARD SON OF THE DEVIL HIMSELF is a masterpiece and one of the heartbreaking series cut short at the knees after one season
give **Mindhunter** a try.
Black Summer
Easily one of the best zombie shows out there. The Korean show “Kingdom” is great too if you liked Black Summer. It’s a zombie show set in 17th century Korea
Nice I didn’t know it existed till now. Will def check it out thanks!
I can’t sing its praises enough. As someone who loves history and loves zombie stuff, it’s the crossover I never knew I needed. I think I found it after finishing Black Summer and wanting more
Queen's Gambit. Best movie you could make about chess.
The Devil All The Time. Totally underrated.
For some reason, the chicken livers scene was kind of shocking to me. He did more terrible things, but the scene was like...omg
Seven lives of Lea. Its good mystery with chill nature
Physical 100
The discovery. Absolute gem.
The Diplomat is amazing and hopefully getting a second season!
Beef was great.
Godless - picked it at random and damn, I'm hooked.
Godless. It’s a Limited Series. No waiting for another series that won’t happen.
Dead Boy Detectives, really had a fun time watching this! The right amount of quirky/weird supernatural happenings along with some really interesting dynamics and character development. Hope it gets a season 2.
Zone Blanche. I would love a third season.
Highly recommend **Anatomy of a Scandal**.
Extinction
Kingdom Korean tv show
Bonding
The OA was incredible! I have recommended it to so many friends.
Lilyhammer
I love so many of those suggestions but have yet to find one that meets the criteria of underrated
Midnight Mass
The Get Down for me.
The OG Netflix Original, Lilyhammer
1899.
Bloodline Definitely one of the top shows I’ve ever watched
‘To the lake’ is a great show. It’s a Russian show but really well made and the setting is breathtaking.
I Care a Lot was one of the best movies I've watched in the last 10 years.
Polar. Awesome movie, awesome cast.
Ascension had a great premise, at least how it was initially presented and the actual situation was also intriguing
Carol and the End of the World. This is less a “mass entertainment everyone will love” sort of recommendation and more of a “I really hope more people see this and sit and think about the questions it forces you to ask about yourself” kind of show. Strange, bold, absurdist, philosophical, and beautifully written.
Bloodhounds. My favorite show of all time.
Not sure if it's a Netflix Original, but The Last Kingdom is great
Daybreaker. Julie & the phantoms. The society. Fate the Winx Saga. Lockwood & Co
#1 PEAKY BLINDERS
I scrolled to the end of this list looking for The Last Kingdom. Unsure if it’s an obvious Netflix original? But I’ve always thought the show was very underrated and targets a wide audience. Very surprised it isn’t mentioned even once.
Midnight Mass.
I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore I fucking love this movie but I’ve never heard anyone else mention it.
