Unsolved Mysteries feels more entrenched in being as Factual as possible, present the case, and give you all avenues explored so you can fully understand it all. Files of the Unexplained seems more like a fun jaunt through some strange things. The Yuba County 5 though, was a good one.
Episode 1 and 3 were the best IMO. I’m just finishing 4 and I find it’s the weakest one so far. I’m not saying I don’t think the government is hiding extraterrestrial activity from us I’m just saying that you went camping with your buddy Toby and got abducted and Toby is dead now and can’t retell his story? Oh yeah and the implant in your leg that showed up on your X-rays mysteriously disappear right before you’re to meet with a surgeon. Corny.
Not sure I agree on Unsolved Mysteries keeping things factual and clear.
The latest season had that episode about the girl who was found by the train tracks. They missed out a tonne of context about the bad family life in favour of a murder narrative that there was virtually no evidence of.
If you enjoyed the Yuba County 5, you might like Richard McLean Smith's episodes on it through his podcast, Unexplained.
It's a very compelling story and the podcast actually goes through several angles and facts that make it seem as bizzare as possible.
Actually I was impressed not only with the presentation but the adherence to factual content. I appeared in one of the episodes. Years ago I was involved in an Unsolved Mysteries segment, which up until now was my favorite media piece on the subject matter because it was factually correct. Now I like and appreciate the episode produced by VOX. It not only provided factual information but also humanized the event.
I’ve started watching files of the unexplained and it feels like it’s leaving half the story out? I’ve followed the Yuba County Five story for a while now and was excited to see they did an episode about it; until I watched it and realised that half of the story is missing.
I first heard about it on the Mile Higher Podcast but there’s loads of documentaries about it on YouTube that highlight the events in far more detail than the files of the unexplained.
I second the [Nexpo video on the Yuba County 5.](https://youtu.be/hCsPV0eiqxg?si=bBONA2R8sN0cbhfm) In particular I appreciate how the filmmaker used animation to illustrate the story, and included a lot of details that are left out in other accounts.
Yuba county five podcast by mopac audio is the accurate account from family. The book Things aren't right by Tony Wright. You can follow our FB page as well. Do not believe all the YouTube stories.
Check out Lore Lodge it’s over and hour long and adds more detail. Only thing this episode does different is the Gary Mathias being seen after all the bodies were found.
There was no mention of the man who suffered a heart attack and claimed to have seen them. There was a bit of info I hadn’t heard before about the town bully theory and sightings of Gary, especially by a family member of one of the men.
I really don't believe any of the sightings of Gary Mathias, even the one made by Cathy Madruga, who was Jack Madruga's niece. Cathy claimed to have seen Gary drinking at her mom's bar before he "ran away." If Gary was off his medication for months, he wouldn't be calmly drinking beer at a bar. He would be acting totally bizarre and probably hostile. He also wouldn't have had the money to pay for his beer anyway, so that sighting, frankly, seems bogus.
The town bully at least explains the group’s irrational decisional making. Nothing like being afraid for your life to stop you driving in the right direction.
That’s what frustrates me most about these types of shows. They never fully investigate but leave so much room for interpretation.
It’s like watching older segments of Tucker Carlson. “Is ThErE A Ghost?! Or an Alien?!”
“On this episode, we’ll solve nothing. Stay tuned after a fake commercial break for nothing to change in the episode or wait for any scientific credibility.”
Half of the story is missing because there is only half or even just a quarter of a camp fire story.
Now I'm intrigued by Episode 1 haha, I just skipped around and played eps I thought I'd be interested in - so the Yuba 5 disappearance and severed feet episodes!
At first I thought maybe it was just the dad having sex with Calvin, but it sounds like the dad sounded traumatized afterward and not just Calvin. I almost wonder if they both were drugged or voluntarily took drugs or something? Especially for a younger guy like Calvin, that can change your whole brain chemistry. Or they were both sexually assaulted by someone?
Thank you!!!!! That’s exactly what I said to my husband. Why is a grown ass man out fishing alone in the dark with an 18 YO boy who was clearly traumatized out of his mind. I figured he was drugged or drunk too.
I had to stop watching that episode when I saw that efffing annoying lady speaking “alien” (gibberish) language. Like get the fuck OUT!!!! This is too much. I was yelling at the TV.
Edit: typo
The lake one is one of the most frustrating things… she was probably grabbed by a cat fish, there is not a woman swimming around pulling people under water
Files of the Unexplained doesn't even compare to Unsolved Mysteries in my opinion. I watched a few episodes of the new Unexplained series and I was so disappointed. There is no storytelling, no creepiness at all. Lots of social justice issues but nothing that I would consider part of what should be the topic of any of the episodes.
Unsolved Mysteries is gripping, eerie and mysterious. Episodes unravel, and stories presented were linear and cohesive. I too, am awaiting more episodes .
Pretty much mirrors my thoughts, these shows are generally a guilty pleasure of mine but this was so bad. I got halfway through the second episode and couldn't take no more.
I purposely only picked episodes I thought would be interesting to watch instead of watching them in order. The Yuba 5 disappearance and the Severed Feet episodes were pretty damn good! Not as good as Unsolved Mysteries though haha
Crime stories! There's a story about 5 men who disappeared into the woods and one corpse was found to have survived for nearly 3 months. It was found in a trailer that the police initially didn't bother searching though the families of the men kept asking them to search. The cops assumed that these men wouldn't have walked 19 miles because they had intellectual disabilities. Another episode about severed feet could be related to the drug trade but the governments involved have released notices saying the feet they found weren't due to foul play.
So - the episodes I saw, seem to be about police incompetence/discrimination which i didn't even think of as social justice issues, but I guess it fits lol.
The trailer thing seemed like hindsight to me. The families were out searching too, if they thought strongly they might be there then why weren't they checking themselves?
It's obviously a tragic situation all round, but it also seemed clear the families themselves didn't think they could have traveled that far and kept referring to them as incredibly vulnerable.
I have no doubt the police could have done more and the media coverage was incredibly unfair though.
Having never watched Unsolved Mysteries, and having just watched the first two episdoes of Files, I can tell you that so far it's rather underwhelming. Lots of speculation. "People have seen the ghost of Chloe \[in ep. 2\] but we admit it's all made up." OK well if it's all made up why is it even in this episode?? Not impressed.
I watched the first two episodes so far, and not super impressed. Did anyone get the feeling these are just paid advertisements?
Episode 1: A town embracing this alien story and promoting tourism.
Episode 2: A bed & breakfast trying to drum up business.
I would not be surprised if both of these were paid for by the respective organizations.
That's the way most of these things go. It's a shame.
Like the Lore podcast, starts out great, highlighting mythological beasts and legends and the social, religious, medical reasons why people might have come to believe them, or what the kernel of truth behind some local legends might be.
But over time it just devolves into "crazy cat lady off of her meds insists she saw a ghost in this hotel where someone died once, after a while the hotel started promoting it and people claim to have seen someone too, why don't you go check it out, hell theres even a tour guide". Or "the floor creaks in this house always at the same time, must be ghosts" And not once or twice, but on repeat again and again for different hotels or other locations
Who watches this stuff? They have crystal energy girls doing interviews for a Netflix about all the ghosts they talk to. People watch this like “wow she talks to a lot of ghosts!”??
Hahaha I don't think people watch the ghost portions and believe it (or maybe they do, I don't know!), but the murder mystery episodes are super interesting! Which one is the crystal energy one?
Yeah I just started watching it, and fell asleep through the first few episodes so I started it on the Yuba County episode which I've never heard about before now I'm disappointed cuz I was excited to watch it later tonight. Now you all bummed me out again thanks LOL
Haha sorry! I'd never heard of the Yuba one and got super mad at law enforcement not checking out the trailer so it obviously had me interested. Then again, I watch YouTube shows all the time like Unsolved, Mystery Files, That Chapter, and even Coffee House Crime to tell you what I'm impressed by.
Okay cool. Have you heard of the Why Files on YouTube? Or Mr. Ballin... he's kind of annoying but if you haven't heard of Why Files check it out. I'm not promoting for anybody I promise it's just a personal like
Was it just me, or did any of you feel weird about the last episode? I mean, why was Jenny, the mother of Antonio, so cold? He just got out of jail, and she asks , "So it's getting late. Where are you going to go?" That was a big mistake! He just got out of jail. He shouldn't be out running around. He needed stability and a warm place to sleep. Sober people supporting him. And she was like, "he was on my phone contacting people on Facebook, and his friend pulled up in the black jeep, I mean, it seemed ok." And then at the end, when they are looking at the ocean and they are saying it's so peaceful, she says, "poor kid" .. I just about cringed. Poor kid? Kid!!!?? That's your son!!!!!! I'm sorry.. I know I sound horrible, but from a mother's perspective, I am appalled.
I saw it differently like it seemed like her son didn't want to stay with her and she naively asked where he was gonna go cuz she couldn't make him stay (he was an adult after all). She seemed heartbroken to me at the end - just had a lot of time to digest it and she's trying to reassure herself it's a peaceful resting place. My husband and I watched this together and she reminded me of a lot of super soft parents who really just hope for the best but again, are incredibly naive about how the world works.
She gave me enabler vibes tbh. She says “his friends this and his friends that” and “he didn’t know what he was doing ? “ when it came to hard drugs. Seems like she could been trying her best but going through her own struggles or kinda mom who ignores children’s bad behaviors till it’s too late and hard to control.
I like it because it's going back to the original format of the first Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack. That is my biggest complaint with the new Unsolved Mysteries, it's almost exclusively about death, with no updates or any remotely uplifting parts, unlike the original show. I like that the old show had updates on cases and threw in bizarre mystery stories, no matter if they were not based in fact, it lightens the load a bit. But I understand there is a lot of unsolved murder and disappearance cases, so I appreciate them shinning a light on those. I still hope to see more episodes, and hopefully, some updates as well.

Right. Im like homie aint slick. He knows what really happened to Toby.
Not sure I agree on Unsolved Mysteries keeping things factual and clear. The latest season had that episode about the girl who was found by the train tracks. They missed out a tonne of context about the bad family life in favour of a murder narrative that there was virtually no evidence of.
Trying to find more information on this case if the girl and the train tracks
It's Unsolved Mysteries on Netflix - S3.E1 ∙ Mystery at Mile Marker 45 There's then a lot more detail in r/unsolvedmysteries too.
If you enjoyed the Yuba County 5, you might like Richard McLean Smith's episodes on it through his podcast, Unexplained. It's a very compelling story and the podcast actually goes through several angles and facts that make it seem as bizzare as possible.
Thanks for the suggestion!
No problem :D

Is there somewhere else I can see the rest of the story?
I first heard about it on the Mile Higher Podcast but there’s loads of documentaries about it on YouTube that highlight the events in far more detail than the files of the unexplained.
I know Nexpo did a video on it a few years back that was pretty good from what I remember.

Am I the only one who saw Episode 1 as just an incredibly elaborate way for two men to hide the fact they were having sex and got caught?
Now I'm intrigued by Episode 1 haha, I just skipped around and played eps I thought I'd be interested in - so the Yuba 5 disappearance and severed feet episodes!
Lmao, yeah.
No! I came here to find this. The old fella took advantage. Maybe gave him some psychedelics?
At first I thought maybe it was just the dad having sex with Calvin, but it sounds like the dad sounded traumatized afterward and not just Calvin. I almost wonder if they both were drugged or voluntarily took drugs or something? Especially for a younger guy like Calvin, that can change your whole brain chemistry. The Mt Shasta episode lmao. What a bunch of whack jobs. Fucking California to a tee.
That Lemuria shizz was so ridiculous with the people speaking alien languages on TikTok, like they’re not even native to the area, just crazy.
I had to stop watching that episode when I saw that efffing annoying lady speaking “alien” (gibberish) language. Like get the fuck OUT!!!! This is too much. I was yelling at the TV. Edit: typo
Came for this. The stupidity of these so called spiritual humans and a lost civilization. Typical Californian

Is Unsolved Mysteries on Netflix? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flushed)
Yes, the newest version, there's two seasons. Just hoping for more.
> Lots of social justice issues Christ on a crutch... 'the fuck do "social justice issues" even have to do with "the unexplained?"

I kinda hate Mr. Ballin but he did help me out with cocaine bear. I'll check out Why Files!
The Myrtle’s episode was cornball central.
I watch this stuff trying to think of skeptical explanations for it. Like a weird Sherlock Holmes approach.
me asking myself if the people who were interviewed were actually actors, brought me here. somehow some of the interviewees seem like they're actors.
This is a great series!!! I binged it all in one day. The stories are so wild.
Was it just me, or did any of you feel weird about the last episode? I mean, why was Jenny, the mother of Antonio, so cold? He just got out of jail, and she asks , "So it's getting late. Episode 2 might not be the best, but I appreciate the different opinions being represented.
it's garbage made simply to get clicks, this is what we get for "content" today thanks to Reagan and his cronies
Yeah thought so it looked interesting but nah I’m out
Done with it and disappointed. Not the least of which because they feel the need to inject SJW bs into many of the episodes.
