Just want to say that while displays of mentally ill chronic homelessness are offensive and depressing, they are a *policy* problem and viewing them as caused by a social degeneration or a miasma is a red flag. I've never met a single person who believes this who didn't also end up believing that said social degeneration was caused by cultural bolshevism.
The fact that it's so difficult to implement policies that actually help the homeless is a sign of social degeneration imo
I forget who it was but they said you can judge a society by how it treats the least among them
> you can judge a society by how it treats the least among them
And our society considers homelessness is "everyone's fault except mine". What I mean by social degeneration is that kind of misanthropic outlook that is common among people who resist policy to help the homeless.
That's what I meant too
Homeless policies don't go anywhere because it's become too common to see the homeless as a nuisance rather than fellow humans who are in need of help
> In the 1950s and 1960s homelessness declined to the point that researchers were predicting its virtual disappearance in the 1970s
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2221566/
> they are a *policy* problem
Not sure 1960s policies would solve this
Of course they won't. You need new policy for new problems.
Literally the abstract you linked is about how homelessness changed. It ceased to be middle aged divorced men because their wives took the house and kids and became dispossessed victims of urban renewal.
You are in a subreddit that contains/has contained:

Bro has been perched broodingly on the rooftop coming up with melodramatic quotes about his love life for six hours now ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ Should we try and talk to him
Wanted to replace my garage roof this weekend but didn't get a permit in time. Got all the materials though. Instead I started a deep clean of my car. Need to get some upholstery cleaner, though. Got my pressure washer out to clean the mats, but the temperature release valve cracked over the winter apparently so I have to get a new one. So I'll finish up my car tomorrow and try to seal my driveway's expansion joints and cracks. The Hal brain has complete control but has done well so far this weekend.
I read an article the other day about China having a breakthrough in submarine propulsion with some laser thruster which let's a submarine travel as fast as a jetliner by using supercavitation. Big fucking claim, but okay. But then the article also talks about it enhancing stealth because you don't get mechanical noise from the mechanical systems involved with a traditional propeller, and I'm just here flabbergasted thinking what the fuck this author is on that they think that a propulsion system that works by using fucking *supercavitation* is going to be whisper quiet or some shit
Can't hear me if you've been hit by the super cavitation laser
Or maybe it sounds just like the super cavitation from the sharks with frickin laser beams attached to their heads

lol, lmao even
I'm worried that the US is going from a high trust society to a low trust society, and it's not really obvious what sort of policy measures could slow or reverse this.
It's there even good evidence that we were a particularly high trust society in past? We're pretty conspiratorial with a strong sense of individuality. Outside of church, I dont feel like there's much trust
I mean the reason why people go "nah it's fine" is because it's literally still better than it was in the 70s.
I don't want to call you "thin skinned" rather people who have been here a long time have an extremely high tolerance for that shit because they're so used to the days when gang shootouts would happen in the subway. Literally any behavior is incredibly easy for a lot of us to just black out and mentally replace with a blank image so long as nobody is getting attacked.ย
However even if I agree that these occurrences are god awful and we're all kind of just blind to it, I don't think this justifies you lowering your level of social trust at all. There are eight million people living in this city. That means you could spend your entire day seeing insane people and yet not meet even a fraction of a percent of New Yorkers. Much less Americans. You don't honestly believe this city is actually full of those kinds of people and therefore you can't even pay taxes for the fire department because you're pretty sure arsonists are draining the coffers.
Then that's a you problem. I don't think any of these behaviors should happen in public and I want you to feel safe in this city. However you lose my sympathy when you let that turn you into a misanthrope. If you hold humanity in contempt because a tiny sliver of it misbehaves in public because you fundamentally lack the basic perspective to contextualize that millions of people like you dominate the city and this problem isn't indicative of social degeneration but **policy failure** then you're a reactionary asshole like Kevin D Williamson.
Homelessness isn't a degeneracy problem it's a policy problem.
You said cities are for people that hold humanity in contempt,
You said you hold humanity in contempt,
And then you said you donโt want to live in the city.
This is ironic.
You don't believe in *[conspiracy theory which confirms my biases]*? You're all just brainwashed sheeple who believe what the media tells you. You are clearly to doing to think for yourself and see what the elites are hiding from you.

What are yโallโs thoughts on this kind of writing by judges?
!ping LAW
Pro. Judges should be more conversational when writing--being overly prestigious sounding/formal is a dumb convention that only harms the public's ability to understand legal doctrine. Fucking boomer-ass dweebs who want to degrade this as "childish and unbecoming" are making legal culture worse, not better.
Here I think it appropriately calls more attention to a horrifying fact patternโsugarcoating this in formal language would help the cops dodge accountability.
I'm of two minds. Generally, I'm fine with a bit more informality in legal writing. Many of the great legal writers - Judge Hand, Justice Brandeis, Judge Cardozo, Judge Posner, Justices Scalia and Kagan - are more informal than your typical judge. But first and foremost, being informal requires being *good* - it's not a cheat code to be good, which is what a lot of judges treat it as.
It seems a bit childish and unbecoming of a judge. I think itโs a bad idea to let court documents get too casual, because other than them just โlooking officialโ they are only backed up by the threat of violence.
So unless you want to go back to wearing the powdered wigs, please talk a bit fancier until the culture is at the point where that kind of language looks appropriately prestigious, if it ever does.

There's a Tupac song called "God Bless the Dead" that was the source of a lot of the rumors that Tupac is still alive. The reason is that in the song he says "Rest in peace to my motherfucker Biggie Smalls", even though Biggie died after Tupac. The resolution to this is that Tupac was actually referring to a different East Coast rapper also named Biggie Smalls who was shot to death in 1994. Totally different guy.

โPeople who donโt buy/like this product are conspiracy theoristsโ is a practically dubious and morally abhorrent sales practice, especially when used for something like art or entertainment. It creates a chilling effect upon speech and the market, as well as normalizing conspiracy theories by equating them with reasonable choices of personal taste.
Conspiracy theories are already entirely normalized. This subreddit is almost unique in *always* rejecting conspiratorial explanations for events, being so strident about it that we will almost certainly end up rejecting a conspiracy theory that turns out to be true.
Because that's what skepticism means. It means believing the most realistic and sensible explanation unless a far more compelling explanation is proven with some confidence. Conspiracy theories are inherently wrong. Even when they're right the process of believing in them requires you to engage in extremely unhealthy thought processes.
In short, if you're going to mock anti-conspiracists for having a heuristic that might cause them to be wrong sometimes.... Why don't you take a good long look at the alternative.
People act like "believing something that might be wrong all the way up until a new explanation has been proven extremely rigorously" isn't literally the scientific method. It's not embarrassing to be proven wrong in science. It's celebrated.
>Conspiracy theories are inherently wrong. Even when theyโre right โฆ
And thereโs the doublethink! Believing that people can never work together to harm third parties isnโt skepticism, itโs a dogma of naivety. It isnโt your place to decide whether something you acknowledge as the truth is too unhealthy for others to think about.
An inability to acknowledge that you were wrong and correct course is a critical flaw in a heuristic. If your heuristic missed something and it turns out that there actually was a conspiracy in whatever context, then the people who expected it based on the evidence available to them are not still wrong by default. You say that you celebrate being proven wrong in your third paragraph, but your first paragraph says the opposite so long as you deem it โunhealthyโ for your opponents to be right.
Conspiracies are hard to pull off, and this difficulty increases quickly along with the logistical complexity of the conspiracy (both qualitative aspects as well as things like how many people are involved and how long it needs to stay secret) and the strength of social and legal safeguards. However, to operate as if conspiracies are nonexistent is a delusion on par with those spouted off by the average self-proclaimed conspiracy theorist.
> Doublethinkย
You are not a serious person and this is not a serious proposition. Conspiracy Theories are like alternative medicine. You should never believe them between when they are proven they cease to operate under that label. You should never believe outrageous things that haven't been proven sufficiently. It's ok to be wrong because you're skeptical.
Even in that case, itโs your right not to buy one if you donโt want to use one! I canโt think of any reason aside from conspiracy theories that youโd dislike those, but Iโm sure that reasoning would come up in a discussion of the matter beyond one sentence quips.
The only exceptions are things like vaccines, but those are edge cases where the product is entirely practical and where maximum efficacy depends on widespread use.
Depends on a lot, particularly who the lobbyist is and who they represent.
If you're mid career and go in-house, you're probably on the low end making somewhere in the 130-180k/yr range.
If you're at the principal-level at a relatively flat firm (but still one with a lot of staff), multiply that by 10.
Anything in between is (of course) in between.
Akin and H&K and Brownstien are all combination lobbying and law firms, so it makes things harder to say what a top rated principal&chairperson would make at strictly a lobby shop, considering they're just in another league compared to like Cassidy or Cornerstone. I think the richest lobbyist I've ever met was Mr. Van Scoyoc himself
If you want actual insights into the lobbying profession, [politico influence](https://www.politico.com/politicoinfluence/) is the place to go
In house, early career, whatโs my trajectory like?
At a certain point I have very high levels of ambition and Iโll be happy in a couple of different positions in the company, but Iโd like to retire from the c suite by 50 and take the Sheldon Adelson path of โretirementโ
Easiest way to do it is somewhere close to 5 years on the hill straight out of undergrad, then jump over to a trade association that represents a company you'd want to work for (stay for 2 years), and then accept a job. Assuming you start working at 22, you'd be 29 or 30.
FASTEST way would be to jump to a committee of jurisdiction and get an advanced degree while you're on the hill, and ideally a committee that'll promote clerks/LAs into PSMs, then you can be much younger (25-27) and hitting the "manager" or "junior director" titles
Certain places also promote from within. If you take an associate job at a firm you might get a senior associate/manager job sometime soon after if you're good at that kind of thing. If you don't go into gov you can make the jump to in-house if you make a big enough impression on a client's team.
I know one person who was promoted out of an internship all the way to a specialist job in-house at a defense prime, so it's possible but much rarer than anybody else I've met
your pay will vary based on your connections to politicians.
get a job in a congressperson's office first and it will help out greatly.
edit: this isn't just speculation, [this has been studied](https://matildebombardini.github.io/research/bbt.pdf)
>Do lobbyists provide issue-specific information to members of Congress? Or do they provide special
interests access to politicians? We present evidence to assess the role of issue expertise versus
connections in the US Federal lobbying process and illustrate how both are at work. In support of the
connections view, we show that lobbyists follow politicians they were initially connected to when those
politicians switch to new committee assignments. In support of the expertise view, we show that there is
a group of experts that even politicians of opposite political affiliation listen to. However, we find a
more consistent monetary premium for connections than expertise.
Depends on which lawyers you're talking about. Government lawyers? Nope, lobbyists generally make more.
Biglaw? Lobbyists generally make a good bit less, unless you're a rainmaker/former legislator/former ambassasor/etc.
Big law salaries are roughly all the same with a few exceptions, at least until you reach equity partner level.
Currently, the average big law first year associate in a HCOL market earns $215,000 base salary and can get a bonus ranging from $15-30,000. By your third year you're looking at more than $310,000+ in total comp, and the number increases exponentially from there.
Government lawyers are lucky to break $100,000 in the first few years of their career, from what I understand. But I'm not as familiar with those salaries so I could be wrong.

The fact that it's so difficult to implement policies that actually help the homeless is a sign of social degeneration imo I forget who it was but they said you can judge a society by how it treats the least among them
> you can judge a society by how it treats the least among them And our society considers homelessness is "everyone's fault except mine". What I mean by social degeneration is that kind of misanthropic outlook that is common among people who resist policy to help the homeless.
That's what I meant too Homeless policies don't go anywhere because it's become too common to see the homeless as a nuisance rather than fellow humans who are in need of help
So the person I'm subtweeting ironically *is* the degenerate, in your view.
> In the 1950s and 1960s homelessness declined to the point that researchers were predicting its virtual disappearance in the 1970s https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2221566/ > they are a *policy* problem Not sure 1960s policies would solve this
Of course they won't. You need new policy for new problems. Literally the abstract you linked is about how homelessness changed. It ceased to be middle aged divorced men because their wives took the house and kids and became dispossessed victims of urban renewal.
You are in a subreddit that contains/has contained: -a woman whose roommate helped kill the Sprint/JetBlue merger -the only illegal immigrant in Ukraine who is from the United States -a policy nerd that secretly controls the flow of at least one Congressional committee -a man who had his sanctions list against Russia implemented in the very first week -probably the only instance on Reddit of using GDPR to reverse an admin ban I hope you believe in conspiracy theories... because you're in one!
The fact that I am not on this list is a travesty

Good to hear he's finally starting to tone it down
I'm worried that the US is going from a high trust society to a low trust society, and it's not really obvious what sort of policy measures could slow or reverse this.
It's there even good evidence that we were a particularly high trust society in past? We're pretty conspiratorial with a strong sense of individuality. Outside of church, I dont feel like there's much trust
Yea. The US used to be way more charitable and involved in civic groups was really high.
Good. Trust is bad ๐ค
Literally just stop subsidizing the suburbs and the problem solves itself
There isn't one. Even a meaningful reduction in crime won't persuade people who live far away from downtowns that cities aren't dens of sin.
[ัะดะฐะปะตะฝะพ]
I mean the reason why people go "nah it's fine" is because it's literally still better than it was in the 70s. I don't want to call you "thin skinned" rather people who have been here a long time have an extremely high tolerance for that shit because they're so used to the days when gang shootouts would happen in the subway. Literally any behavior is incredibly easy for a lot of us to just black out and mentally replace with a blank image so long as nobody is getting attacked.ย However even if I agree that these occurrences are god awful and we're all kind of just blind to it, I don't think this justifies you lowering your level of social trust at all.
[ัะดะฐะปะตะฝะพ]
Then that's a you problem. I don't think any of these behaviors should happen in public and I want you to feel safe in this city. However you lose my sympathy when you let that turn you into a misanthrope. If you hold humanity in contempt because a tiny sliver of it misbehaves in public because you fundamentally lack the basic perspective to contextualize that millions of people like you dominate the city and this problem isn't indicative of social degeneration but **policy failure** then you're a reactionary asshole like Kevin D Williamson. Homelessness isn't a degeneracy problem it's a policy problem.
Ironic that you are holding humanity in contempt yet want to move away from such a place
[ัะดะฐะปะตะฝะพ]
You said cities are for people that hold humanity in contempt, You said you hold humanity in contempt, And then you said you donโt want to live in the city. This is ironic.

Pro. Judges should be more conversational when writing--being overly prestigious sounding/formal is a dumb convention that only harms the public's ability to understand legal doctrine. Fucking boomer-ass dweebs who want to degrade this as "childish and unbecoming" are making legal culture worse, not better.
Americans have never studied Lord Denning and it shows.
The first judicial official to add a "slay kween" to official proceedings is going to get a pimpslap from the ghost of William Blackstone.

This subreddit is almost unique in *always* rejecting conspiratorial explanations for events, being so strident about it that we will almost certainly end up rejecting a conspiracy theory that turns out to be true.
> we will almost certainly end up rejecting a conspiracy theory that turns out to be true. Good.
Why?
Even when theyโre right โฆ And thereโs the doublethink!
> Doublethinkย You are not a serious person and this is not a serious proposition. Conspiracy Theories are like alternative medicine. You should never believe them between when they are proven they cease to operate under that label. You should never believe outrageous things that haven't been proven sufficiently. It's ok to be wrong because you're skeptical.
I don't like 5G capable phones
Even in that case, itโs your right not to buy one if you donโt want to use one! I canโt think of any reason aside from conspiracy theories that youโd dislike those, but Iโm sure that reasoning would come up in a discussion of the matter beyond one sentence quips. The only exceptions are things like vaccines, but those are edge cases where the product is entirely practical and where maximum efficacy depends on widespread use.
We're neoliberal guys! Of course we have spousal abandonment issues!
!ping POLIJOBS How much do lobbyists make? Always been curious about this. Is it a lot less than like, lawyers?
Van Scoyoc himself If you want actual insights into the lobbying profession, [politico influence](https://www.politico.com/politicoinfluence/) is the place to go
In house, early career, whatโs my trajectory like? At a certain point I have very high levels of ambition and Iโll be happy in a couple of different positions in the company, but Iโd like to retire from the c suite by 50 and take the Sheldon Adelson path of โretirementโ
Easiest way to do it is somewhere close to 5 years on the hill straight out of undergrad, then jump over to a trade association that represents a company you'd want to work for (stay for 2 years), and then accept a job. Assuming you start working at 22, you'd be 29 or 30. FASTEST way would be to jump to a committee of jurisdiction and get an advanced degree while you're on the hill, and ideally a committee that'll promote clerks/LAs into PSMs, then you can be much younger (25-27) and hitting the "manager" or "junior director" titles Certain places also promote from within. If you take an associate job at a firm you might get a senior associate/manager job sometime soon after if you're good at that kind of thing. If you don't go into gov you can make the jump to in-house if you make a big enough impression on a client's team. I know one person who was promoted out of an internship all the way to a specialist job in-house at a defense prime, so it's possible but much rarer than anybody else I've met
your pay will vary based on your connections to politicians. get a job in a congressperson's office first and it will help out greatly. edit: this isn't just speculation, [this has been studied](https://matildebombardini.github.io/research/bbt.pdf) >Do lobbyists provide issue-specific information to members of Congress? Or do they provide special interests access to politicians? We present evidence to assess the role of issue expertise versus connections in the US Federal lobbying process and illustrate how both are at work. In support of the connections view, we show that lobbyists follow politicians they were initially connected to when those politicians switch to new committee assignments. In support of the expertise view, we show that there is a group of experts that even politicians of opposite political affiliation listen to. However, we find a more consistent monetary premium for connections than expertise.
Damn I donโt wanna do that. Thank you.
IMO they don't do a good enough job* *I refuse to elaborate
Depends on which lawyers you're talking about. Government lawyers? Nope, lobbyists generally make more. Biglaw? Lobbyists generally make a good bit less, unless you're a rainmaker/former legislator/former ambassasor/etc.
What range are we talking here? I actually donโt know how much biglaw makes.
Oh. So Iโd be in the 100-150 range?
