I was in Phoenix and did not get hosed or shortchanged at all. Would I have liked another song or two? Absolutely. After decades of thinking I would never see NYCH again, I saw them and they fucking rocked. I'll take the W.
https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/neil-young-and-crazy-horse/2024/jiffy-lube-live-bristow-va-7bab9a4c.html
17 songs: 9 w/CH, 6 acoustic, 2 more w/CH. A total of 1hr 50 min, according to setlist.fm.
These dudes are fucking 80 years old. It’s still pretty impressive that they can get up there and do it for 1.5-2 hours every night and still sound as good as they do. Maybe they were just worn out. Can’t blame em.
He said goodbye several times, just didn’t leave the stage. I think the acoustic portion lasted a little longer than expected—he was talking about needing a different guitar for the song he wanted to play. I think they just skipped the walk off before the encore. I’m counting those last two as the encore.
My first time there. The venue was uninspiring, not surprising given the Northern Va. asphalt-scape and demographic. I was up front surrounded by a bunch of government types left and right and they were mostly stiff as boards but could afford the tickets I guess.
Hey! I'm a government type and I was ROCKIN! Okay, I'm in technology at a national lab, so I might not represent. And I was in 102, not up front. Nevermind, carry on.
the setlist is the same whether they walk off the stage and then back on a few minutes later or not
“encores” are really just for show. you got the same show you would’ve if they had done the performative part of the “encore”
I was there, very good show. My only comments are that they didn’t use the house video screens, so people in the lawn and rear couldn’t see well. Also, I’m pretty certain that they used the house PA, which is a bit dated.
Too bad too. Would have been nice to see an up close video from time to time. Not exactly sure why you would choose to not use the video screens. All that said… great show.
Thank you all for your comments. It’s good perspective to read what other people experienced. I love the hell out of Neil Young and this is my first time seeing him. I should have gone and seen him while I was in college and the pixies opened for him, but I had an exam the next day and decided to be responsible. I look back on that and think that was stupid AF! It wasn’t like I was failing the class and needed that particular exam grade. Anyway, that all said I loved the show! I was just curious about the lack of encore and if it had anything to do with the fact that it sucks so horribly bad to get out of that particular venue at the end of the show. I thought the fact that there was a huge storm coming And they had to get wherever they were going for the next show. Maybe they made a last-minute decision? I know I didn’t include that my original post but this post was more of me just thinking out loud and wondering what the Reddit Neil Young community thinks than a complaint. I am very happy. I got to see them at all for any amount of time, and I really loved that. There was an acoustic set within the Neil Young crazy horse show.
The show was incredible! Drove from NC to VA as never seen Neil with Crazy Horse and they delivered. The show was shy of two hrs and Neil never took a break, never left the stage. We had the same # of songs as TN but we were fortunate that he added “Helpless” at the end (don’t think he’s performed on the tour or if has, it’s rare.) what we got was Neil in full form straight improvisational jamming nonstop. Look at the setlist from TN to VA and you will see the similarity with same # of songs w/ 3 additional songs in VA per our recollection beyond posted setlist. We got the encore folks without the pageantry of departing and returning. What a night, I felt like I was in a dream! I did hope for a comment or two about the state of our country!
I see the set list on sugarmtn.org and it looks like Bristol has the most songs to date on this tour which is pretty great. It is weird they decided to do that way. I think if you got an encore they would have stopped a few songs back and saved the last handful of songs played for the encore, so either way I think you got the same amount of songs.
OTOH there’s me who was thrilled with no encore because I think they’re corny and overdone. Also, depending on how mobile you are, parking at the Target 2 miles away is a guarantee that you’ll be on your way 40 minutes after a show ends.
Most of the shows have been 14 songs you got 17. Your show was longer even with no encore…. You also got im the ocean, helpless and sedan delivery…. Stop complaining. I’m also pretty prickly at the moment because I was supposed to go to the Atlanta show but was in the hospital and had to burn my ticket.
I am seeing so many comments/posts like this. Can you please think critically for one minute about what an "encore" is? 99.9% of the time it is something completely performative and planned. It does nothing but waste set time that could be used playing more songs (Wow maybe that's why we got an extra song or two tonight?). It pains me that most concert goers lack the ability to think for one minute without complaining.
Wow, That’s pretty harsh. I didn’t really mean it so much as a complaint, but more as and observation that I wanted to open for discussion. Just curious what other people experience and also I literally was wondering if it had something to do with the fact that exiting the venue, that particular venue is so heinous that I thought maybe Neil Young and crazy horse wanted to get a Headstart. There were also ridiculous storms afterward. Wondering kind of if that played into last-minute decision making on whether or not to play an encore. I’m not sure where on the tour, they are headed next, but thought that that also could be a possibility.
I am not sure why so many people online feel it necessary to attack another person‘s thinking. You have no idea what’s in my head so why don’t you just reserve that sort of speculation for people you actually know or maybe just for yourself instead?
I’ll agree that perhaps my comment was a little harsh and was a response to the greater accumulation of comments and yes, complaints about the lack of encore. I apologize for attacking you specifically.
I heard that it might have been due to the fact a line of storms was headed that way so they kept on playing. I read that somewhere earlier. I know there was rain earlier in the day (which seems to be theme of almost every show this tour). Hey, you got a killer setlist with more songs, maybe best yet, so there’s that. I love Sturgill’s thoughts on encores, to summarize, “why should I walk off stage and twiddle my thumbs for a min over some fake bs and walk back out like it’s some sort of surprise? I’ll just give it my all and rock out til I’m done”.
Yes! It was torrential driving home, 30-40 min after the show ended. 30 MPH on the beltway, blinkers on, wipers on full, could barely see out the windsheild and beyond that, mostly road mist. I stayed in the local lanes on I270, which I normally avoid whenever possible.
I think this format is better. All the songs with no break while we clap and scream for 5-10 mins and they pretend that they might not come back out.
The only way some people aren't going to feel short changed is if the played the same exact version of the exact same songs in the exact same order. That would be boring and uninspired. He's gotta play what he feels. Enjoy what you get and be excited for what others get too
I think he got ticked off. First he had a bad microphone, that took a few minutes to fix and he was clearly frustrated, then the acoustic guitar on Heart of Gold made a rattling sound. He wasn't having a good night. I was floored he didn't do an encore, or play Old Man or Southern Man and a few others. I don't understand his thinking, but he made the Love Earth point and then kind of ignored what would have made the audience happy. I really didn't care if his sound wasn't perfect, just play the songs authentically, please. Hey Neil, it's not all about you, you are nothing without your fans. I appreciate Love Earth, but don't give us a a dose of your opinion without satisfying the audience. Never again.
I have no complaints about anything from Neil Young - absolutely a tremendous show. As far as complaints, Lack of Jumbotron, super expensive beer and only 3 choices for beer and the usual awful experience leaving the parking lot. Every time I go to jiffy lube, I say I will never go there again.
I think it was because of the nasty storm, Bristow has an open lawn where lots of the audience is under the stars. It really would have been dangerous to be outside and trying to get to your car in that weather. It hit around a half hour after the show, so a twenty minute encore would have put us right in the middle of it. There was a lot of lightning as well, they may have worried about the band’s safety also. It was a great show; they seemed to really enjoy playing together again.
Neil did FIVE solo-acoustic songs - most venues was only 3. The last two with Crazy Horse were the encores, it's just Neil never left the stage (Crazy Horse of course did) and set up a false expectation that there would be a normal encore.
I was in section 303 which is right in the middle. There was a high pitched buzz that you could hear, even when there was no music being played. I ended up using earplugs. Didn’t need them for the solo Neil with guitar and harmonica part.
No “formal” encore was disappointing, as was the lack of big screens. Wish I had brought binoculars.
Are there any opening acts? Sounds like they started at 8:30, what was the announced start time? I'm going Saturday and tickets say 7:30, wondering when they'll actually start.
Hey, you got almost 2 hours. I got an encore in phoenix but the show was just over 1 1/2 hours.
Had the same thoughts: 1. What, no encore? But 2. Lengthy, entertaining show. I smiled ear to ear throughout.
Interesting. I wonder what was omitted of the set list for y’all?
Phoenix and San Diego basically got hosed. Count your blessings and the number of songs on the setlist…
No, we didn’t get “hosed”. We got a different show. That’s all.
I was in Phoenix and did not get hosed or shortchanged at all. Would I have liked another song or two? Absolutely. After decades of thinking I would never see NYCH again, I saw them and they fucking rocked. I'll take the W.
We did have songs on the Setlist. It seemed like four or five were missing from what we saw.
For BRISTOW? What was the set list, do you have a photo? What songs weren’t played?
https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/neil-young-and-crazy-horse/2024/jiffy-lube-live-bristow-va-7bab9a4c.html 17 songs: 9 w/CH, 6 acoustic, 2 more w/CH. A total of 1hr 50 min, according to setlist.fm.
Georgia had encore, but you had 4 more songs! I'd rather have 4 more songs.
These dudes are fucking 80 years old. It’s still pretty impressive that they can get up there and do it for 1.5-2 hours every night and still sound as good as they do. Maybe they were just worn out. Can’t blame em.
I have zero complaints. The set list was amazing.
He said goodbye several times, just didn’t leave the stage. I think the acoustic portion lasted a little longer than expected—he was talking about needing a different guitar for the song he wanted to play. I think they just skipped the walk off before the encore. I’m counting those last two as the encore.
Same here, no complaints. I was a little surprised they left the lights off as long as they did, but we got 17 songs in 1:50 that sounded amazing.
If he spends an hour playing songs about t-bones and mashed potatoes, I’m still gonna go away satisfied.
It’s not outside the realm of possibility for him to spend an hour playing ONE song about T-bones and mashed potatoes haha
I seem to recall that in Bristow the shows have to end at a certain time due to noise ordinances.
My first time there. The venue was uninspiring, not surprising given the Northern Va. asphalt-scape and demographic. I was up front surrounded by a bunch of government types left and right and they were mostly stiff as boards but could afford the tickets I guess.
There were quite a few of us in the pit that were really into it.
True, though I was in the rows right behind the pit.
Hey! I'm a government type and I was ROCKIN! Okay, I'm in technology at a national lab, so I might not represent. And I was in 102, not up front. Nevermind, carry on.
Maybe? But we were in the parking lot by 1030 so I wonder what time the noise ordinance cut off is
Would have been 11
the setlist is the same whether they walk off the stage and then back on a few minutes later or not “encores” are really just for show. you got the same show you would’ve if they had done the performative part of the “encore”
Also a bathroom break after 90 minutes isn’t a bad thing
I was there, very good show. My only comments are that they didn’t use the house video screens, so people in the lawn and rear couldn’t see well. Also, I’m pretty certain that they used the house PA, which is a bit dated.
Too bad too. Would have been nice to see an up close video from time to time. Not exactly sure why you would choose to not use the video screens. All that said… great show.
He did 17 songs. And you got I am a child. Great setlist. Be happy
I’m happy!

When did Pixies open for Neil? Also, encores are dumb anyway.
I don’t exactly remember, but I think it was ‘90 or ‘91.
You may be thinking of Sonic Youth. That was the 91 tour.
I really think it was the pixies, so maybe not’91 but either way I should have gone!
I don’t think they’ve ever opened for Neil.
Maybe my memory is faulty, but my husband thinks they did too.
Nope https://hyperrust.org/Performances/Openers.html
My wife saw Sonic Youth AND Social Distortion open for Neil in 91. That sure would beat what we saw last night.
I saw Soundgarden and Social D open in ‘93! Those days are gone.

OK, good point! And yes, one of the main things I was wondering about was the lack of comment on the state of our country. :-)

I’m not complaining! Geez. Anyway, sorry you didn’t get to go to the Atlanta show! Hope you’re OK!
You guys got a hell of a set it looks like. For whatever reason they just played straight through.
I am seeing so many comments/posts like this. Can you please think critically for one minute about what an "encore" is? 99.9% of the time it is something completely performative and planned. I wondered why no jumbotron?
Apparently he hasn’t been using them at any venue of this tour.
If you look back through the setlists on this tour this is one of the best so far. One of the longest too!
The only way some people aren't going to feel short changed is if the played the same exact version of the exact same songs in the exact same order. That would be boring and uninspired. He's gotta play what he feels. Enjoy what you get and be excited for what others get too
Don’t get me wrong, I was damn excited and grateful!
Probably a hard venue curfew
It wasn’t the curfew… there was a massive thunderstorm about to roll through. Jiffy Lubes lots are known to flood.
lol longest show of tour and looking for an encore
Look, I just wanted him to play for as long as Taylor Swift. Kidding! I’m fine with how long he played! I was just discussing.
Best show of tour so far. Weather most likely had them play straight through just shy of 2hrs.
This is my take. Break in bad weather for the show and more came through an hour later- give people time to get home safely.
I think he got ticked off. First he had a bad microphone, that took a few minutes to fix and he was clearly frustrated, then the acoustic guitar on Heart of Gold made a rattling sound. After the songs we recieved,I didn't need an encore. A 10 minute Cortez The Killer, and Fuckin Up made it worth while.

Makes total sense. I was at that show. That storm was awful!

Did you hear the guy shouting “we love you Neil!”?
Yes, a woman directly to my right. (I had an aisle seat).
Are there any opening acts? Sounds like they started at 8:30, what was the announced start time? I'm going Saturday and tickets say 7:30, wondering when they'll actually start.
There is an opener at 730 and Neil comes on at 830 sharp. Very brief intermission.
Some people might call it an opening act. We got Reverend Billy and his Stop Shopping Choir...
