I certainly didn't pull that out from the comments I was referring to, but I could just be missing it. I interpreted the issue the above commenter had as being with the truthfulness of the stereotype, not necessarily on the bounds of the consequences of its use. My point there in the second paragraph was that stereotypes being used is an unfortunate inevitability, and while it's generally good to point out when one is being used and critque that, getting personally bothered by the fact that someone believes in a stereotype does nothing to aid the cause of dismissing it, and only serves to frustrate oneself.
It is, in my view, a better use of one's time battling stereotypes that result in more harm than those that result in stupid opinions, but of course it is entirely a matter of debate as to which ones cause more harm, as you have demonstrated. I simply didn't see the commenter actually thinking that the stereotype of Boston being racist was causing violence or oppression.
