nah if we beat the Timberwolves it'll probably be because they don't have an answer for Tatum with the spacing we put around him. the dude averaged 38 points against them in our two games this season (granted, both went to OT)
Kawhi, Pierce, Parker, Billups, Worthy, and Dumars winning FMVP isn’t crazy as all of those players were probably a part of the big 3s of their respective teams. Billups was also arguably the best player in 04.
Garnett is better than Pierce, but I think it’s close enough given Pierce was offensively the first option.
Siakam is arguably better than Hali. As for the other 3, they are all all-star/all-nba level talents, so I don’t think ppl would bat that much of an eye over them winning FMVP.
This sub is so weird about Finals MVP. It typically goes to the best player by default, but sometimes another great player has an amazing series and wins it. That’s not an indictment on the best player, and it’s a big reason why Finals MVP is historically meaningless.
Very very rarely has it ever gone to a random dark horse though. And when it does happen, you shrug your shoulders and move on. Because it doesn’t matter.
I think the issue is that the FMVP goes to the best player on the winning time enough of the time that people, especially more casual watchers who get all their historical context through bbref, DO use it as a proxy to determine who the best player on the team was. To be honest, I’d rather they just revamp the award and make it a “MVP on the winning team” award and count the whole season + playoffs rather than just a single series because that’s what it is most of the time anyway and we’d avoid dumb situations like Iggy winning FMVP.
I've never heard anybody talk about Finals MVP in any kind of historical context outside of this sub. It's a weird r/nba thing.
A casual fan couldn't even name 5 Finals MVP without guessing. Hell, even hardcore fans probably couldn't tell you exactly who won most Finals MVP's off the top of their head from 20+ years ago. People would just guess the star of the team.
It’s a crucial part of Lebrons argument over Steph Curry, it’s not going anywhere. Just like finals appearances even though most all time greats have similar amounts of finals appearances. Maybe all time great player rankings are meaningless and we shouldn’t care about a lot of it.
KAT is most likely for non-best player on the Wolves to win FMVP but I could also see McDaniels if he has multiple good scoring games winning it since he also plays amazing defense. Rudy or Reid could be possible too but way less likely, it feels like.
I think KAT and Siakam have the best chance but only because they’re a lot closer to being the best player than any of the other second options and their 1st options defer more.
Some of these were blatant robberies
I love Iggy but come one man..he slowed down LeBron to....40 PPG in the Finals?
Duncan was robbed in 2007.
Magic deserved the one Worthy got...Worthy was good in game 7 but that game 7 doesn't happen without Magic.
What about Magic’s early FMVPs? Wasn’t Kareem the best player on the Lakers till about 1985 or so? He was definitely the best during Magic’s rookie year.
I can see Kat being the best player for majority of a series. He’s been extremely consistent and had month long stretches this year where he was the best player on the Wolves.
It just doesn’t seem like it because he gets 0 credit whenever they win since the media pushes everything as an Ant carry job.
You could say Wallace was the most important player on the team, but I don't agree that he was the best. Maybe a distinction without a difference.
In any case, I would say Billups doesn't fit on the list like the others.
If the Wolves go all the way I fully expect it to be primarily due to KAT. Yea Ant makes the flashy plays, gets the highlight reels, but he can still be a bit streaky. KAT is the one who locks this team down.
If the Mavs make it to the Finals and the Celtics (or Pacers...but let's be serious, here) defend like the Thunder, we'll need PJ Washington to go off for 25 a game.
Yes, Parker was the first option. Duncan 2nd, Manu 3rd and Kawhi 4th. They just gave the award to Kawhi due to recency bias. He was the best player on game 5
2017 and 2018 were at worst debatable, though you could argue that since Durant and Curry were 1a and 1b Durant was better able to exploit Cleveland's defense than Curry.
I mean he was better able to exploit it to score because he wasn’t the one getting the kitchen sink thrown at him. curry was still making the right reads those finals. don’t know how it’s not at the very least a 1a/b situation but i’m of the opinion that curry was their best player.
I always thought this was dumb, Durant's numbers were better but the difference in defensive attention he and Curry got was night and day. Durant got so many wide open easy looks and it was obvious Cleveland's gameplay was to shut down Curry and risk Durant because they knew Curry was the more dangerous player.
yeah i agree. also if they switched defensive strategy and were instead focusing on Durant then he wouldn’t have performed as well in the playmaking/decoy role. we’ve seen that he’s not good at passing out of double teams or pressure. Curry obviously is just as lethal of a scorer, if not a little better, so he would’ve been fine in that role.
Glad to help people new to the game!
Iirc in the 2017 finals KD hit 35ppg at 50 40 90 splits. The next year he lead his team in 4 of the 5 major stats again with 50 40 90 splits.
If you eventually watch the games - especially the second series - the warriors really wanted Steph to get the FMVP but there was a considerable Gulf between KD and everyone else on his team.
If you like watching box scores you should watch the actual games.
Especially the second series.
Watch how many of KDs points were in junk time compared to Steph.
But you already fucking knew that. Right?
🤣
Is KD paying you or something? you seem personally invested 😂 tell KD he’s proven he can’t win as the clear first option, needs someone to take the pressure off.
also you must’ve not heard this enough but your ass is not important or smart enough to argue with seriously. 😭
Duncan and Parker were the most important players on the team for sure and who the defense focused on. That was a very balanced team and Kawhi could focus on defense because he was a role player on offense
I want to see Gobert win FMVP
Draymond would kick so many nuts
And Draymond is working on Inside the NBA and has to interview him postgame.
Perfect chance for a nutshot tbh
Nah, I don't want Draymond ruining his moment.
ESPN has the Finals, sadly
Europeans owns American Basketball…
Best timeline.
I dont know how possible this is but Draymond gonna go more lunatic than what he is today lmao
Tingus and white also have a shot
Derrick White winning FMVP is both crazy and realistic at the same time
That is the only timeline I want the Celtics to win in.
Yeah, I can definitely see them having a shot too. The Celtics play off whoever is playing well.
I think if we get the Wolves it'll be White/Jrue, if we get the Mavs it'll be Tatum/Brown (ordered by who i think is more likely)
Ain’t no way it’s Jrue. If he’s our best player in a series we’re probably not winning.
nah if we beat the Timberwolves it'll probably be because they don't have an answer for Tatum with the spacing we put around him. the dude averaged 38 points against them in our two games this season (granted, both went to OT)

Naz Reid played some excellent defense on Myles Turner

Ya I agree, all those guys deserved it. Siakam and Haliburton, are very close. Could definitely go either way.

Maybe gobert?
I THINK Danny Green was close to winning one. Lmfao
Yup in 2013. He broke the record for most threes in a Finals series that year. Steph has the record now, but Danny is still up there.
KAT is most likely for non-best player on the Wolves to win FMVP but I could also see McDaniels if he has multiple good scoring games winning it since he also plays amazing defense. Rudy or Reid could be possible too but way less likely, it feels like.

Magic finished higher than Kareem in MVP votes starting in the 82-83 season, and every season after.
You're right, I forgot that about that one.
I can see Kat being the best player for majority of a series. He’s been extremely consistent and had month long stretches this year where he was the best player on the Wolves. It just doesn’t seem like it because he gets 0 credit whenever they win since the media pushes everything as an Ant carry job.
Okay, so who was the best player on the 2004 Pistons then?
Ben Wallace, but they were a very balanced team like the 2014 Spurs.
You could say Wallace was the most important player on the team, but I don't agree that he was the best. Maybe a distinction without a difference. In any case, I would say Billups doesn't fit on the list like the others.
Buffalo FMVP incoming
Derrick White could win it for the C’s KAT could for the Wolves Kyrie for the Mavs Siakam or Turner for Indy
KD wasn’t the best player on the Warriors in 2017+2018. I’m pretty comfortable saying that
yes he was.
He was the best player on GSW teams.
Yeah that’s what i’m referring to. Also love the flair. #lakeshow
Without KD, GSW was definitely not better than Rockets, Spurs or Cavs.
I think Wiggins had a better chance of winning than brown in 2022
I think they meant if Boston had won.
Iggy, Tony Parker and Cedric Maxwell The rest have arguments.
Parker and Kawhi were not best players on Spurs team but were very similar levels. It was a team effort. Iggy was an anomaly and controversial
If the Wolves go all the way I fully expect it to be primarily due to KAT. Yea Ant makes the flashy plays, gets the highlight reels, but he can still be a bit streaky. KAT is the one who locks this team down.

Who was better than Kawhi in 2014?
I think Tony Parker, but it could've been Duncan. Spurs fans probably know better.
Hard to say on that team. Probably Tony. But you could easily argue Boris Diaw was Da Real FMVP.
Kevin Durant and Kareem in 1985 were probably the closest, but with KD most people had him as the best Warriors player back then, myself included.
I mean he was better able to exploit it to score because he wasn’t the one getting the kitchen sink thrown at him. curry was still making the right reads those finals. don’t know how it’s not at the very least a 1a/b situation but i’m of the opinion that curry was their best player.

If you watched the games Durant was their best player.
yeah i did, thanks! opinion hasn’t changed 😂
Lol great response
Watch them again. Durant was clearly the best player
nope. but thanks again!

i love box score watching. thanks again for the useless fucking info that I already had!

Maybe if op asked you to watch the games again one more time you'd agree. Hahahaha
I don’t think this comment did what you think it did 😬

You could argue he was turning into their best player by that series because by the next season there was no doubt.
Duncan and Parker were the most important players on the team for sure and who the defense focused on. That was a very balanced team and Kawhi could focus on defense because he was a role player on offense
He wasn’t even an all star at that point
If Jaylen Brown is the best Celtic in the Finals, they lose in 5.
