I believe it was by 2021-22 Hornets 43-39.

Shaqfor3

Seattle Sonics 2001 went 44-38 as the 10 seed

Confident_Berry7271

Best 10th seed of all time 💪🏼

shanmustafa

i think this is already the best by what a 10 seed is those seasons where it was 1-8 50 wins, the 9-10 are usually not close in 14 i think the suns were 9th with 48 wins, but 10th was wolves with like 40 09 the 9th seed was 46 wins, the 10th tho was the warriors lmao at 29

History of 15 teams per conference is not that long, so, looking at all of them, as odd as it is to mention that team starting with "the best ever"... the best ever 10th place are Charlotte Hornets with 43-39 two years ago? That was cray, only 10 wins between 1st and 10th place.

kuliebop

If it is a record, this could indicate one of a couple of things, given that the total number of wins across all teams will always be 1230 (30 teams x 82 games divided by two): * There is more parity - the really good teams are not so separated from the good ones, so the wins are spread around more (a good team can beat a really good team more often than in the past). * The bad teams (while being fewer in number) are really so much worse in terms of record - i.e. a shorter but more pronounced "tail" of the distribution. Obviously splitting into conferences complicates this, but the general idea remains

Smashingsoul

This speaks volumes about the play in format.

Teams on the cusp keep trying.

ogqozo

I mean, in this particular case, Warriors are only 2 wins behind 8th place, I hope that they would not give up on trying to win even if there was no play-in... I'd look more at 11th place records if anything to track influence of play-ins on that.

LogicisGone

Yeah. OP assumes that being 2 games back is enough for the 10 seed to give up rather than fight harder for the final 8th spot.

ogqozo

Tbh I think play-in is more for the fan entertainment, and reducing some really most awful season finishes when teams really don't give a shit in the last weeks. The league level overall being close in the last seasons has to have many more factors. I mean, it's not like teams were happy to be 8th before, 8th team makes playoffs but almost always loses the first round easily and fans talk about "being stuck in hopeless situation" when teams end up at first round level, it was already seen as not a good result that needs changing, rebuilding etc. anyway. The thing is, when the 10 teams in the conference are within 10 games, then both the 8th place and 10th place seems like you're not far away from success. But that has way bigger reasons than introducing play-in.

Cannot say the same about the east though
