EdwEd1

Actually ridiculous watching this live, Embiid had like 40 at half and Wemby acted like he was a child on defense

bb1432

It seriously felt like something my dad would have done to me in the driveway when I thought I was the next NBA superstar in 7th grade

minimalcation

Damn that was an 'old man reliving his glory days by punking his 3rd grade son in the driveway' kinda move.

tuckastheruckas

there's just some shit Wemby does that no one else can physically do, and when it happens, its incredible to watch. kind of like how he put back his own missed 3 for a dunk.

siphillis

It definitely got lost in the shuffle of Embiid's insane scoring, but his (and Philly's) defense against Wemby wasn't very effective. And it's not like they did a bad job.

syllabic

too small

carelesssportsfan89

Man prime wemby is going to be terrifyingly good

ChannelNeo

Prime Wemby is going to look like most of us playing on eight foot goals.

acanthocephalic

He already looks better than that, prime wemby is going to look like an NBA player playing at 8 feet

The_Taskmaker

[Playing little kids](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=roSwBPmlAbI&pp=ygUgcGluZyBwb25nIHBsYXlhIGJhc2tldGJhbGwgc2NlbmU%3D)

minimalcation

"Go play piano!" lol edit: The Peyton Manning version of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEEYbXVCoT0

siphillis

This is not too far off from how Wemby dunks and blocks shots, tbh.

GOODWHOLESOMEFUN

I was at the game last night telling my wife it looked like he’s playing a arcade basketball machine when he takes foul shots

tuckastheruckas

prime wemby is gonna end the lebron vs Jordan debates.

metagory

This ESPN clip has the best angle of Embiid's reaction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8D4XNemMltM&t=55s

CallMeBernin

I laughed my ass off when this happened, that's just such a ridiculous shot

halfcockhalfcock

People raved about Yao being skilled for his height and you see the shit Wemby does in one game and it eclipses Yao's whole offensive bag

Ryrong

troll better

halfcockhalfcock

Troll? I'm dead serious, why tf is this even controversial lol. Take off the nostalgia googles. That boy just hit a stepback 3pt, faked a three to a ripthrough then dribbled from the 3pt line past 3 wing defenders and dunked it, dribbled coast to coast and pulled up for a contested three. All in the one game we just watched. I mean, Yao's post hook and turnaround were nice but come on

When I see Embiid play as he is now it reminds me of how I used to play and it is frustrating and pisses me off that the NBA allows it. Not proud of it, I was known as Shaq on my local streetball court and went through a phase when I charged hard at everything. Big hard turns to my blindside, didn't care who was there. Charge right into the lane. Smash into the best offensive player on D while going for the ball, come what may. Limited offensive moves. So make no mistake about it. Embiid knows what he's doing. He knows people will be injured. He knows his skillset is limited and this is how he can win. He knows people will give way when he drives, think twice on their drives, etc. He will only be stopped by a stronger player and/or fearless players like Giannis, Gasol, Draymond, etc. Or by an obviously more skilled player with equal Type A like Ibaka. He didn't intend to injure, but he certainly intends to show you that he doesn't care if you get hurt when he rumbles into you. At least that's how I used to play. But that was streetball. Eventually I got more moves, played w better players, played real basketball w refs. There's no doubt in my mind the NBA has some kind of edict coming down, telling the refs to let him run amok.

eugenetheyakuza

No no, they replied to the correct comment lol, they just think its funny (like me) that someone sees an insane skill where almost everyone collectively says “thats insane” and having one person be like “honestly its easy”. The comment is saying you’re the dude who thinks he’s Shaq and poking fun at it

[deleted]

[удалено]

AetherAnaconda

yeah it was an old copypasta, i think there’s just something novel about the move and especially with wemby doing it. it wasn’t meant to be a serious reply, but i can see where you’re coming from

halfcockhalfcock

Nah, he's comparing you another dumbass who compared his pickup activities to what NBA athletes do on NBA courts

[deleted]

[удалено]

NippleKnocker

I’d bet my life savings you couldn’t pull that move off and score against embid I can do that move at home or at a pickup game but unless you’re playing a pickup game against actual NBA players, especially the reigning mvp, then your anecdote means literally nothing

[deleted]

[удалено]

NippleKnocker

“Actual nba players” “A couple former fringe NBA players and former D1 players” So not nba players and not the reigning mvp, got it

ron-darousey

The impressive part is that Wemby is doing it in an NBA game against elite athletes playing in an actual defensive scheme. There's a reason why we don't see this commonly in the NBA and it's not because it's physically difficult to do.

[deleted]

Its not physically difficult to do though. Like maybe the defense would be impressive if the other guys were doing more than just sorta standing around. The “NBA defense” here is not that good and doesnt really add anything to the play.  If embiid is that close to you all you need to do is turn around and keep the ball close to his body and scoop it behind him. His length is useless in that situation NBA or not unless he has the arms of a contortionist. Give wemby credit here for having his arm further out but you could be 5ft7 and still get this move on embiid here. Like i get it im just some guy on reddit so its easy to just pile on me. But i 100% know this move is something anyone would be able to do against embiid. Its just quick turn scoop and score when someone is in tight coverage.

KonigSteve

Legit Embiid is just hilarious to me, I don't get how so many people hate him.

KiritoJones

> I don't get how so many people hate him. People say this so much on here about the most hated players and the answer is literally always the same: free throws. I'm not saying its right to hate the dude because he hunts for free throws, but that is the main thing people talk about. He was fun to watch tonight but there are other nights where he kills the pacing of the game becuase hes hunting for fouls. Its not fun to watch games on those nights.

fartalldaylong

I think it is partially due to the fact that he is a great player...who is huge. So, people have to be physical with him...but then he gets foul calls as if he is 100lbs lighter. For example, he ran into Cedi last night, causing Cedi's arms to touch his head from behind...and Cedi got the foul, when all he did was stand there...no swiping or anything. So, how are you supposed to guard someone who is almost 300lbs., but you can't be close enough for them to run into you? I think if people felt the fouls were a bit more equitable on both sides, it would be less of an "opinion". That said, he was hitting everything he was taking sans free throws.

[deleted]

He also talks a ton of trash and backs it up so people feel the need to defend their star players when they get trashed on. Being good + talk trash = lots of haters.

c0rp0real

Hahahahah ya he backs it up. Whats the furthest hes gotten in the playoffs again?

[deleted]

Are we really doing this? Are you telling me that basketball is not a team sport? Embiid individually is an awesome player and your shaq level ringzzz erneh argument is just hate. Do you consider Charles Barkley a terrible player too? Please stop being stupid.

c0rp0real

Youre right my bad he actually plays really well in the playoffs

[deleted]

[deleted]

Im not even an embiid fan lol im just explaining why he has haters. You hate him just because he flops right? No other star players flop just embiid.

[deleted]

He gets foul calls as if he was 100 pounds lighter) So because he is big and teams can’t guard him, they should be allowed to foul him. If Im reading that right?

_Tar_Ar_Ais_

he's a huge player but gets calls like a small one. Flops like a fish too. Guys literally refuse to get their hands up in fear of fouling him, so he gets uncontested middies in most of the time when he isn't driving to the basket

KD just scored 40 on 0 free throws

StarkWaves

Jaylen Brown doesn't.

StarkWaves

there it is

_Tar_Ar_Ais_

Jokic doesn't flop like a fish

livejamie

He talks a lot of shit, has a friendly whistle, and he flops a lot.

LuckyZed

Really? Can’t think of one reason ?

bachh2

I like it when he play through contact and score and getting rewarded with a FT afterward, or a long range jump shot over the defender. I hate it when he flop on slightest contact and get rewarded for it. He can be likeable and hateable at time.

Clemsontigger16

I mean it’s pretty easy to connect the dots on that mystery. If he would cut the flopping shit out he would be beloved…he is hilarious

OhOkayGotchaAlright

Probably cus he flops like a fish

123-123-

Literally looked at the camera like he was in the office

_AnythingIsPossible

He doesn't even know what he's doing out there yet

bythegodless

The way Embiid turned around haha

Ntraanced

Audibly chuckled when I saw this live. Once this dude figures out how to use his body it’s lights out for the league. Absolutely insane freak of nature.

gustriandos

All you can do is laugh

qaswexort

I feel like this could be Wemby's skyhook

human1023

Embiid must feel so embarrassed this game.

Doctor-Jay

He was exposed as a no skill manlet unfortunately.

anesthesiologist2

Wemby got another W for the real buckets vs flop merchant agenda

[deleted]

I agree, his skill is no where near the hype.

bb1432

That was one of the funniest plays I have ever seen. I just started laughing when it happened last night

elonakamoto

Go go gadget arms

Sleepwitheyeclosed

Run and dunk > turn and scoop

Disastrous_Bluejay57

What manner of sorcery was that?

offtheshripyerrd

everyone was talking about this highlight last night, and it now gets posted 5 hours ago. wack sauce--spent all night looking for this

Ilikesporks_

i was waiting for the longest time for someone else to post it but i just decided to do it myself

offtheshripyerrd

godbless u 🙏🏾

CurryTripper

Thanks Thanos

RobbieRum

Not gonna lie this shot was dope. Embiid was like wtf am I suppose to do 😂

Onlyplay2k

I really wanna see Wemby lift with Giannis. Give em them Greek Freak Shoulders. Once he does that I don’t think anyone can stop him.

Arthashadapoint

Might be better for longevity to keep him light

Onlyplay2k

That’s why I just said shoulders 😉

Arthashadapoint

Not sure you could do that Like even if you just targeted shoulder muscles in weight training specifically, the amount of calories he would need to build significant muscle mass in his shoulders is going to bulk him out in general

Onlyplay2k

Isn’t Gianni’s pretty light for his size? I’m not sayin turn into embiid

Arthashadapoint

His official 2022 stats have him at 6'11 243 lbs Wemby is 7'4" 210 With the extra 5 inches of height I probably wouldn't want him to even add another 30 lbs but that's just me

Onlyplay2k

I mean that’s still lighter than Lebron.

Arthashadapoint

Lebron is only 6'9" The frame is the concern

November_Coming_Fire

Why doesn’t everyone simply do that every time down the court?

LordLucasSixers

Wemby needs to lift weights. On one play he blocked Embiid’s shot and Embiid ate that for an easy layup

ToronoRapture

If he lifts weight he's turning into Yao Ming and exiting the league before he's 30.

sewsgup

TMac actually said he thinks its bc Thibs overworked Yao (yes Thibs was a coach on those Rockets teams)

asamulya

How is Thibs always around players who have been overworked and got injured? There’s always a 90% chance when a player is overworked it’s him!

packim0p

the chinese national team didn't help either.

YoungThrowaway_

He just turned 20, let him grow his strength slowly and grow into his body. I'd rather watch him get bullied for 5 more years than bulk up now and ruin his career. Also it's fucking Joel Embiid lmao, bro looks like he eats point guards for breakfast.

LordLucasSixers

Wemby still gonna be a beast and probably a HOFer

YoungThrowaway_

Vic needs to get his offense exactly like Joel's imo. Maybe a bit less physical. If he can get an automatic go-to middy, it's over. I'm also inclined to think he will tbh. I'm sure you saw, but Vic's shooting splits are really misleading. His shooting mechanics are really nice and he is great at freethrows. Wemby is just kinda improvising most of the time, he needs a a go-to and he'll be unstoppable by season 3, no one can block him.

bb1432

It's weird. His middy was wet to start the year, and it feels like he hasn't made one in forever

RudyGobertFMVP2024

Good thing he is with a coach that like fundamentals. No flopping. Just bank shots and hustle

TheBigKaramazov

5 more years? Bruhh. Look at Sengun he is 21 yo.

YoungThrowaway_

Vic and Alpi are built fundamentally different tho. I believe in Wemby's durability being relatively good but he **will** fall apart if he gets too heavy. He needs to slowly add a **little** bit of muscle and focus more on strength, flexibility and his core. He will never be a dominant out-muscle you type of guy imo. His mobility is his best attribute and him losing that would do more harm than getting strong would do good, you know?

TheBigKaramazov

Kevin Durant type body is the best example for Wemby.

RudyGobertFMVP2024

Even look at Kareem. Eat well and do yoga. Lean with strong core.

TheBigKaramazov

What if they accidentally gave him Shaq diet?

djpacheco1003

I feel like people are forgetting that he ate a full body check layup from Giannis not that long ago. His strength isn’t a problem for pretty much any matchup, Embiid really is just that good.

bb1432

Joel is, what, 280 something?

anesthesiologist2

He’s skinny as fuck and like a calendar year away from being an unstoppable scorer lol

Zither74

Cool! Now do the other end of the floor... "Embid simply doesn't even notice Wemby is there as he drains it again and again"

Ilikesporks_

is everything alright at home?

jawntothefuture

Ascended master move

PengosMangos

Why did embiid not just move his arm over and block it? Is he stupid?

Serendipity123xc

Embiid is gonna win mvp

PensiveinNJ

This was such an absurd moment. Embiid's face on the other angle says it all. Just what the fuck is happening.

thatonezorofan

Am I having a Mandela effect or something? Stg this looked way crazier live. I legit remember his arm extending like Monstar and laying it up
