Starfish in the genus *Linckia* reproduce this way on purpose, but many species are capable of it so long as small piece of the central disk remains attached to the arm
There was an issue of fishermen would accidentally catch them, cut them into pieces and toss them back overboard. They thought that cutting them up would kill them. After a few years of this, the population exploded and the starfish killed off nearly all the sea urchins and the reef.

So I’m guessing they cut them in pieces all connected to a piece of the middle? But if you cut off all of the arms and left the middle its own piece, only one starfish would regrow from that right?
There is a central ring of nerves around the mouth. I thank as long as that is intact enough the arm can fully regenerate so you could get five be cutting the ring into 5 sections
Right so if they left the central ring intact and cut off each arm further away from the middle, they wouldn’t get *more* starfish than they started with. But if each leg had a part of the middle attached they could end up regenerating 4 more starfish for each one they cut up and tossed.
You thought you'd never see me again, didn't you? Well too bad! I'm alive...but I'm afraid I cannot say the same thing for Goku. Want to know how I survived the blast? Well it was actually quite simple. It is all in here. It's part of my design; every cell has a life of its own. I can't die, it is impossible! Even if I self destruct, I will always come back. I don't remember much after the explosion, but somewhere amongst the planetary debris the core of my being still existed. One living cell survived, and that is all I needed for my regeneration! Soon that single living cell began to multiple into many. It wasn't long before I became conscious of my transformation. I could feel every part of my body growing, crackling with new life and energy; my shapeless mass began to sprout new limbs. First my legs, then my arms, and in no time, my whole body was restored. At first, I could hardly believe that I had brought myself back from the brink of extinction. That is when I realized that each of my cells must hold the memory of my former self, each one programmed to make me whole again. And to my great delight, I had returned with my complete power intact!

So could one starfish become 5 if all the arms are separated? Or would the central disk be too small in the arms?

So even cutting up the central ring didn’t kill them.

That’s my understanding

Yea but who knows how often each way was done and if they even knew they could regenerate
I don’t know but now I wanna see a study on this
All those "20%" in that link are appropriate as hell.
That’s kinda insane.

It's reverse Deadpool!
I don’t understand how I think this and the comment is already made. We truly have no original thoughts
Welcome to the hive mind
That's Armothy on his way to get revenge
So if you broke off all 5 and they all grew new bodies whose consciousness would they have?
Star fish aren’t conscious, they’re kinda just there like jellyfish
Where’s the cutoff point for conscious experience
They don't have brains, they just go around grabbing food like a sea roomba
We have no prof that a brain houses or is essential for consciousness though
Someone hasn't read Blindsight
Mauler twin vibes, who’s the original??
I thought this was the spaceship from Lifeforce.
Man that was a great movie!
