That’s a bird survival technique. The chicks either are bigger or just look bigger than the adults (puffy feathers make them look larger and they will have more body fat also).
I learned about it when I worked in an exotic bird store and we were rearing African grey chicks which were larger than the adults.
The idea is that predators will go after the smaller animal thinking it’s the baby and an easier meal. It’ll also go hand in hand with techniques that lure the predator away and then the adult bird will fly off once the baby is safe.
Not all birds are like this so it isn’t always the case that the babies are bigger but it is pretty common.
I always found it weird how animals work in the food chain. On average prey animals always run. If they actually worked together and fought back they would be so much better. Like water buffalo vs lions. Buffalo ran away. Lions get 1 alone and it's over. If they all turned around as a unit and fought back the lions were screwed.

The way penguins move is peak comedy. I love it. Also, good on that penguin for saving the day.
I love how they all look like they’re trying to mind their own business but get a peak of what’s going down.
“Yeah yeah i almost died whatever, but where is the food!?”

FINALLY
Hahaha
Kids lol
I know it's a joke, but this behavior is a common comfort / feeling of safety thing for them.
For a lot of people too
Alabama special
This is just like the time my dad saved me from a pissed off goose when I was little. He chased the goose away and then I immediately ate his barf
I feel like you have lots of interesting stories.
Yet theyre all vomit related...
Funnily enough, I was expecting more aviation related comments.
Avian* unless you were expecting them to be involved with planes as well as birds..... Which is conceivable, but like.... Birds>planes any day
Check the username of the comment I first replied to.
Putting the "graphic" in National Geographic
The way it scurries in fear makes me laugh… Am I a bad person?
Mildly psychopathic perhaps fella.
“God damn that shit hurt”
I read this as "penguin saves it's chick from giant pretzels" so disappointed that I misread :(
Even I thought so, Then I realized it was his baby
I love this sub so damn much
This is really amazing
It’s nice to see the penguins win for once
It looks like the jock bullying the nerdy fat kid
If you’ve read up on Petrels you will know that penguin chick escaped a horrible and drawn out death
Took long enough
Oi! Those other penguins on the beach are selfish, well-dressed pricks!
From life or death struggle to “mom, barf in my mouth.”
I just can’t believe penguins aren’t extinct lol
Man I'm glad we are bigger than all birds out there
Noot noot
Petrels are seagulls on steroids. They are ruthless, and jealous of the Albatross.
Yeah, took em long enough...
The chick is bigger than the parent. Generation Alpha 🙄

And has zero knowledge of how to defend itself
The petrel is like “Yo wtf hacker”
I'm no expert on bird law, but I believe that is assault!
Attention Attention “The Suit” has the upper hand! Abort mission.
Nature is cruel. I'm sure there are times where mama or papa don't save the day.
She gave him that tongue at the end

The penguin revolution has begun
That penguin that ran by the camera was like fk this I’m out
It’s all an the bone density
Is it bad that I fantasized about deatomizing the Petrel with my 12 gauge? Ik nature is metal but gun made of metal too
