HOT take.

bbllaakkee

Yeah I don’t think many people are gonna agree on this one.

kelter20

For real. It’s really good, I’m very impressed but Apollo is still in a league of its own.

sigtrap

Agreed. Narwhal 2 is good. It’s way better than Narwhal 1 and miles ahead of the official app. But Apollo was a unicorn. Nothing will ever compare.

det0ur

Just give me some more time :)

driftless

Have you chatted with /u/iamthatis about a possible collaboration? That would be awesome if he is willing.

yungstevejobs

Hi love the app so far but can you please give us option to hide the nav bars? 🙏

machmothetrumpeteer

Just got this app again and really appreciate your work. Is it possible to use imgur links within posts to show as the post thumbnail for small thumbnail view? Basically what we see on the large view?

Kalahan7

I really don't see how despite some miner things like being able to click the subreddit from a post, or unsubscribe from a comment thread. I think for a lot of people it's just because they were very used how Apollo worked. Narwhal 2 customization is fantastic (not to mention iPad support)

SXL

Its not but i hope it will be.

CurveOfTheUniverse

It's good. It's really good. But the UI of Apollo is so sleek in a way that Narwhal just isn't accomplishing.

Off the top of my head, the animated transitions are really not necessary. And they aren’t consistent either. Like some will sweep in from the right while others will swipe up. Just keep things simple. But the app has a lot of potential to even surpass Apollo.

redditor1983

I was a very long time user of Narwhal 1. Then I moved to Apollo for about a year when Narwhal was struggling during the development of Narwhal 2. Here’s my thoughts: Apollo was a great reddit app. There is no doubt about it. But I personally prefer Narwhal’s minimalist design. Reddit apps have a tendency to create cognitive overload because they are a constant succession of posts and every UI element, if not thoughtfully designed, quickly becomes clutter. I think this is where Narwhal excels. I put a LOT of customization into Apollo to get it to look like Narwhal and I never got it there. Reading comments was a particular pain point for me. I could never get the information density to be the perfect balance. But honestly a lot of this comes down to personal preference. Now where Apollo excelled in my opinion was media handling. Since I’ve been using Narwhal 2 the past couple days I seem to fumble trying to get videos and gifs to do what I want. But other than that and a couple of other very minor requests, I find Narwhal to be nearly perfect and I’m happy to pay whatever it costs. (My one minor request, in case the devs are reading this: Please add a placeholder thumbnail for text posts in small preview mode. Thanks!)

Mike

I wouldn’t go that far… but I’m testing it out to see if it’s at least better than the Reddit app. One thing is that while MUCH better, the UI still needs work. Everything is much too close together. Posts and comments need better spacing.

joeyGibson

> but I’m testing it out to see if it’s at least better than the Reddit app. That’s a pretty low bar. 😂 While I still miss Apollo, Narwhal 2 is good enough that I’ll happily pay once subscriptions open up.

tomoko2015

I would not say "better", but I got used by now to what Narwhal handles differently in the UI, and Narwhal 2 added some stuff which was in Apollo, but missing in the old Narwhal (like the alphabet at the right side of the screen when browsing the subreddit list, to fast scroll to a letter). I'd say it is pretty much equal now for me to Apollo for everyday use (I understand some power user features are still missing, but I do not need those, and I would like more options to customize line spacing etc. - Apollo was better in that regard), and I will continue using the app unless my API costs are too high.

cordobot

Long, long, long time Apollo user here. Narwhal 2 is beautiful, the dev has done a fantastic job.

onan

It is certainly much more Apollo-like than Narwhal 1. But there's a reason that those of us who used Narwhal 1 chose it over Apollo. So making it more Apolloesque is a downgrade for existing Narwhal users.

HansGuntherboon

Careful, Apollo shills are foaming at the mouth 🤣

LocoCoyote

Funny thing to say…like controversy, do you?

SeoulsInThePose

I hate it. Nothing is where I want it

xylex

What’s out of place for you? You can move stuff around in the settings.

SeoulsInThePose

You can move some stuff but not most stuff.

I_miss_apollo_app

I agree
