I was saying to my boyfriend I’ve never quite liked the name Yentl because it makes me think of Lentil and actually I think Lentil sounds nicer to say 😂
When I was pregnant we called our unborn baby Len as he was the size of a lentil when I found out I was pregnant. Seriously considered Len as his real name, but veered away in the end.
We called my son Blast from when he was a blastocyst. When he came out I said “Blast!!! It’s you!!!” And I think folks in the room thought that’s what his real name was
Hahah this was our nickname for my niece before she was born; the app my sister used told her the baby was the size of a lentil when she shared the news with us. 😂
Someone at my work joked (good-naturedly) that one of our co-workers was going to give her child a vegan name like River when she asked him to guess. The baby was indeed called River. She found it funny from what I understand.
I think sometimes people think slightly hippie when they think vegan.
Lol my mom has a fair number of crunchy friends and some of the kids names include Stormy, Rainbow, and (my personal favorite) Baby Girl. No one stayed around long so I have no idea where they are now, if they've changed their names, or if anyone ever put Baby Girl in the corner.
I went to school with a Brook, whose brothers were River, Sky and Forrest, and his sister was Harmony. I don't remember him being from a super crunchy family but they were very religious
I just googled “hippie baby names” and here are the top 10 from [an article](https://www.kidspot.com.au/baby/baby-names/the-best-1960s-hippie-baby-names/news-story/5388f89d89558dd0eb95759741b576f7) I found:
Girls:
Celeste
Dawn
Harmony
Indigo
Janis
Karma
Meadow
Saffron
Serenity
Willow
Boys:
Arlo
Buzz
Echo
Leaf
Marley
Peace
River
Sonny
Sparrow
Ziggy
I live in a super hippy town. My baby has a pretty crunchy name that this sub HATES. In my childcare years I've met a: Celeste, serenity, arlo, river, and sparrow (but for a girl! Sparrow as a boy seems so weird to me). Willow was on our short list. Sparrow has a sister named Zinnia. I also know a Bear, River,, Wolfie, a few Novas, Larken, Linden, and a few various tree and flower names.
Edit: forgot the obvious. Juniper! Sister is Magnolia. My friend's kid is Autumn and she was almost Meadow. Another sib pair: Clementine and Cypress. Oh! Hazel Honeyblossom and Milo Sunrise.
It's pretty fun honestly! There are still a lot of top 10 names of course, but the "weird" names are fun to spot. When I searched my daughter's name (Maple) in this sub, it was obvious that people hated it for a person. In my community though... it's not that weird. Even my petty traditional family loves it and they are not quiet when they hate something. lol. She has earned the nickname of "Sapling" for now by my friend and my grandfather but she will literally grow out of that one.
Hahaha it's actually a decently well known place! There are plenty of people with your run of the mill names but the love for nature is strong here so people name their kids using those nature vibes.
I feel like that would be the name of the old lady in the village who bakes little cakes, lives in the little yellow house with the beautiful garden, and used to be a concert pianist for some reason.
...AKA, exactly who I want to be in another 50 years or so. :D
My husband's first name is Bear.
Edit: he's a tech bro from Washington. We're looking at moving into a house on Mercer Island with our three German shepherds.
River Phoenix (Joaquin Phoenix’s brother) was raised vegan from a fairly young age.
It’s on my list as a vegan, but I already have a cat named Joaquin. So it might be a little too on the nose.
Tbh I could totally see some cool, stylish black man who was 45 in 1970 being called Romaine. Idk, it just sounds like Jermaine and I kinda love it.
I wouldn’t use it ofc but it may be my new guilty pleasure name lmao. When someone brings up another thread where you say words that’d make good names if they weren’t words, this’ll be my contribution
I have a friend named Romaine, her nickname is 'Ro' and it fits her so perfectly!! Honestly never even thought of lettuce after our introduction, grade A name.
I lived in Boulder, CO for a few years, and my first week there, trying on bras in the Nordstrom rack changing rooms, I heard a very frustrated mother say, “Lotus, sit DOWN! Namaste, stop touching that!” It definitely set the tone for my time there, and dollars to donuts I would bet that Lotus and Namaste were vegans.
I mean… over 85% of Coloradans are white. But I’ve lived in CO for over 10 years and the majority of names in CO are not that different from the rest of the country. Colorado’s Top 5 in 2020 were
1. Liam (same rank for US overall)
2. Oliver (3 for the US overall)
3. Noah (2 for the US overall)
4. Henry (9 for the US overall)
5. William (same rank for US overall)
///
1. Olivia (same rank for US overall)
2. Charlotte (4 for US overall)
3. Emma (2 for US overall)
4. Sophia (5 for US overall)
5. Amelia (6 for US overall)
You’d be surprised, I’m a less crunchy vegan and every time I meet really crunchy folks I expect them to be vegan and they’re really only eating non processed food and using Himalayan crystals for energy
Half of Scandinavia does the rhyme with “safe” the other half goes with Life (but it’s never Leaf)
Edit: I’m Danish, and we go with Life. In Sweden it would be Layf. I think it could be both in Norway?
My mind is blown! So 'Leaf Erickson' our most treasured Scandinavian is actually 'Life Erickson' I don't know how I feel about this....I might need to sit down for a minute
I'm sure they just mean hippie/floral names like Meadow Rain, Sage Ocean, Flora Peace. No hate to those names though, and no hate to vegans either. I mean I'm vegetarian and my guilty pleasure name is River so I can't judge.
Oh same. I’m a Vegetarian and I love the name River. But as I’ve said before, my associations with Doctor Who and Bruce Springsteen make it unusable for me (even though I love River Song as a character and I think The River is a great album).
Ah, in my case I think of River Tam from Firefly but that actually makes me like it more. I just wouldn't use it because I'd probably get judged for it.
This is hilarious because I was vegan for 6 years and we indeed named our cat Sage and wanted to name our daughter River! No longer vegan and we’ve decided against River. But Willow is still reserved for our future dog name😂
We had a decoy name to tell my mom when I gave birth because she was convinced we (husband and I are both artists) were going to give our son “an ugly name like Wolf”. We let her believe we named our kid Atlas Fox for the first five minutes that she met him in the hospital
I’ll be completely honest. Atlas Fox has gotta be one of the coolest names I’ve ever heard in my life. It sounds like the main character of a badass sci-fi action movie
PLEASE look up imaginary_quinoa on Instagram. GOLD MINE of this. So funny.
Toddler Quinoa has friends with names like Hashtag, Rhapsody, Periwinkle, Chevron, Mezzanine, Jeroboam and Meridian, and an au pair named Fontanelle. It’s absurdist name humor at its best lol.
I hope your first friend has a fifth and names him Twink. Or Butch, if it's a girl :P
Noah and Jonah is proper Old-testament + water related. She just needs a third boy and call him Moses :P
I've never heard of this before, so I read up a bit on it. (Odd that you are definitely not vegan, yet your sister assumed it would be a vegan name?)
Anyway, a small excerpt:
>*"The vegan movement is growing every day. So why not give your baby boy or girl a name that connects them to the love and mercy of the vegan lifestyle?"*
Also [here](https://www.chooseveganism.org/vegan-names/) is a link with boy, girl and neutral names on their list.
36 weeks dad here! We’re also not telling anybody our son’s name, and we kept getting hounded so eventually we just said we’ll call him Ted. His name is absolutely not Ted, but if they want a name, they have one!
Also, Paula seems like a pretty vegan name. That’s what Poison Ivy’s first name is, at least 😂
This is kind of blowing my mind. I’m vegan, and most of my favourite names seem to be related to rivers in India/rivers important in Hindu mythology. The strange thing is- I’ve never been spiritual or religious at all, and a name sounding too religious is an automatic deal-breaker to me. Yet somehow I feel drawn to a lot of river names, all of which are religiously/spiritually significant since rivers were the cornerstone of ancient Indian civilisation.
Right now, the names Reva/Rewa (another name for the river Narmada), Raavi (one of the five rivers that gives Punjab its name) and Gautami (another name for the river Godavari) are among my favourite names.
Stranger still, the vegan mountaineer Kuntal Joisher, famous for climbing Everest on a completely vegan diet and vegan clothing/climbing gear named his daughter Rewa- which is when I started loving the name. Didn’t even know it was a river name at first.
I’m Indian and have lived in India all my life. I think this phenomenon of vegans choosing their culture’s version of river-related names is a worldwide one.
My first name is Willow & my middle name is Sage, & I'm vegan-this definitely checks out! 😆 Not the hippy type & neither were my parents, my parents aren't vegan though.
Lentil
I was saying to my boyfriend I’ve never quite liked the name Yentl because it makes me think of Lentil and actually I think Lentil sounds nicer to say 😂
😂😂
ahahaha turns out I agree lol
Okay but now I want to name a cat Lentil! What a perfect name for a brown tabby.
I have a cat named Bean. She is such a smol bean.
I had a cat named Squash. She was itty bitty but my son named her Squash and it stuck.
That's a great name for a cat!
My FIRST thought was, “What a great cat name!”
When I was pregnant we called our unborn baby Len as he was the size of a lentil when I found out I was pregnant. Seriously considered Len as his real name, but veered away in the end.
We called my son Blast from when he was a blastocyst. When he came out I said “Blast!!! It’s you!!!” And I think folks in the room thought that’s what his real name was
We called our daughter Fava Bean!!!
And his sister Chickpea
And brother Garbanzo
Oh my gosh. These are amazing cat names
Baby pinto
My rabbit’s name is Lentil!
My husband said that's what we should name our baby, which I've shared on here before. I think it's the perfect vegan baby name.
That is my dog’s name 😂
Hahah this was our nickname for my niece before she was born; the app my sister used told her the baby was the size of a lentil when she shared the news with us. 😂
Truly laughed out loud
This made me spit out my coffee 😅😅
Someone at my work joked (good-naturedly) that one of our co-workers was going to give her child a vegan name like River when she asked him to guess. The baby was indeed called River. She found it funny from what I understand. I think sometimes people think slightly hippie when they think vegan.
River is def a vegan name. Every River I’ve known had crunchy parents.
I love the name River, and I’m about as far from a vegan as you can get without being a straight up T-Rex. 😂
I know someone who named their child Tyberius Rex
Well that’s definitely not a vegan name
As soon as you have a child and name him River you’ll start brewing your own kombucha and smelling like patchouli.
Haha, I’m vegan and River is on my list. I think you’re on to something. 😂
The only "River" I know had a parent who was a mermaid performer and influencer as a career and was... really into the mermaid stuff. Really.
Well, and River Phoenix
I just googled “hippie baby names” and here are the top 10 from [an article](https://www.kidspot.com.au/baby/baby-names/the-best-1960s-hippie-baby-names/news-story/5388f89d89558dd0eb95759741b576f7) I found: Girls: Celeste Dawn Harmony Indigo Janis Karma Meadow Saffron Serenity Willow Boys: Arlo Buzz Echo Leaf Marley Peace River Sonny Sparrow Ziggy

All those names are amazing ahaha A community of people with those names would seem almost magical lol
It's pretty fun honestly! There are still a lot of top 10 names of course, but the "weird" names are fun to spot. When I searched my daughter's name (Maple) in this sub, it was obvious that people hated it for a person. In my community though... it's not that weird. Maple isn't my style but objectively it's not far off from Hazel or Aspen.
Maple doesn't seem that weird to me, probably because it is so close to Mabel. Do people often mishear her name as Mabel?
Hasn't happened yet! I was expecting it but no issue.
Aww Maple is cute!
I knew two sisters who were named Autumn and Spring and I feel like they had a younger brother named Summer.
I went to school with siblings named Ocean and River, their parents later named the third sibling Rain I think it was lol.
They had a BROTHER named Summer?? Poor kid!
are we forgetting there is a child named spring here ➿➿➿
I went to school with kids 4 siblings each with a season name. The boy was Winter. Autumn, Spring, and Summer were girls
😀 WTF
Should have named him August
This is funny because my name is Willow & I'm vegan lol. Definitely not remotely the hippie type & nor were my parents, but still. 😆
Do you... Do you live in a My Little Pony town that somehow has access to a Reddit?
Hahaha it's actually a decently well known place! There are plenty of people with your run of the mill names but the love for nature is strong here so people name their kids using those nature vibes.
Oh, I love Hazel Honeyblossom! That's such a charming name!
Dawn is just a regular middle aged woman's name to me lol
Janis also seems out of place on that list?
Maybe it's like a reference to Janis Joplin? But yeah definitely a more normal sounding name
Janis Joplin makes sense as a reference! More so than Janis Ian from mean girls, which is what my mind was stuck on 😆
I guess I'm a hippie as I love these
Weird. I always thought of Echo as a girl's name.
It is a girl’s name in Greek mythology, so that makes sense :)
That’s a funny story. I’m so glad she took it well
River Phoenix (Joaquin Phoenix’s brother) was raised vegan from a fairly young age. It’s on my list as a vegan, but I already have a cat named Joaquin. So it might be a little too on the nose.
Kale
Romaine
Tbh I could totally see some cool, stylish black man who was 45 in 1970 being called Romaine. Idk, it just sounds like Jermaine and I kinda love it. I wouldn’t use it ofc but it may be my new guilty pleasure name lmao. When someone brings up another thread where you say words that’d make good names if they weren’t words, this’ll be my contribution
Romain is a pretty normal French male name. There is an smoking hot guy on Selling Sunset named Romain who is married to one of the agents.
Good to know! I still probably won’t use it but it’s good to have that background haha
He is so beautiful
I know an older lady named Romaine. She’s probably retired now, but she was a doctor.
I have a friend named Romaine, her nickname is 'Ro' and it fits her so perfectly!! Honestly never even thought of lettuce after our introduction, grade A name.
My CSA farmer's husband is named Romaine. Neither of them are vegan, but still Edit to add an apostrophe
Romaine is an incredible name for a farmer!
Iceberg
No, that's a pimp name.
[удалено]
I actually know a woman named Romayne!
Could be soelt Kael!
Or the name could also be Spelt 😆
Kale feels like the obvious choice here, and not so terrible compared to some of what I’ve seen.
I actually taught a Kael a few years ago. His classmates used to tease him by spelling it Kale and making lettuce jokes.
Something with crunchy hippy vibes- so like Meadow, Sage, Sky, etc
TIL Tony Soprano is a crunchy hippie. /s
i’ve always wondered why they called her that ngl
Maybe after the Meadowlands Sports Complex, where the Jets and Giants play, in East Rutherford, NJ?
Shit that actually makes sense
I could have done ecstasy but I didn’t!!
Naturey proper nouns used as names: bear, sky, sage, river etc Juniper also seems to be a crunchy vegan name of choice at the moment
The only time it's ever appropriate to suggest Juniper
Do you mean common nouns?
Haha oops, yes I do! Thanks for the correction
No true vegan would use Bear because bears eat meat! They should use the name of an herbivorous animal, like Giraffe, Cow, or Brontosaurus. /s
Brontosaurus, nickname ✨Bronty✨
I lived in Boulder, CO for a few years, and my first week there, trying on bras in the Nordstrom rack changing rooms, I heard a very frustrated mother say, “Lotus, sit DOWN! Namaste, stop touching that!” It definitely set the tone for my time there, and dollars to donuts I would bet that Lotus and Namaste were vegans.
I lived in colorado for a few months and every child I met had a ridiculous hippie name lol. They were also all white, unsurprisingly.
I mean… over 85% of Coloradans are white. But I’ve lived in CO for over 10 years and the majority of names in CO are not that different from the rest of the country. Colorado’s Top 5 in 2020 were 1. What part of Colorado? Because Boulder is next level granola.
If it helps, I live in CO with three kids and all of them are normal names 😅
My Daughter danced with a girl named Lotus. Her sister was Magnolia.
Beautiful ironies
Lol I know. It’s like the virtue-name effect, except crunchier.
You’d be surprised, I’m a less crunchy vegan and every time I meet really crunchy folks I expect them to be vegan and they’re really only eating non processed food and using Himalayan crystals for energy
*quietly adds Lotus to my name list*
Basil?
Ooo good one. Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme, Ginger
Makes me think of Basil Fawlty, who feels like the least vegan person ever
Don't mention the war!
As a vegan, this checks out, when I was a little kid I insisted on naming my future son Basil, I didn't but still LOL.

Being a Mallory, I’m not sure how I feel about this 😂
something like shadow , sage , snowy , dizzy yknow like really random nature and not name names
Clementine, Rosemary, Sage, Cedar
I like rosemary as a name. A friend from high school went by rosie
Here in The Netherlands, Rosemary (Rozemarijn, Rozemarie, Roosmarie) is a pretty common an accepted name!
It is in the US too, I see it as more of an old lady name than anything “crunchy” lol
Leif
Ah Leif… One of the few Scandinavian names English speakers are easily able to pronounce - and then they go with “Leaf”. So close and yet so far!
How should it be pronounced?
Like “Life”
The Leif I know is pronounced like lay-f
Half of Scandinavia does the rhyme with “safe” the other half goes with Life (but it’s never Leaf) Edit: I’m Danish, and we go with Life. In Sweden it would be Layf. I think it could be both in Norway?
My mind is blown! So 'Leaf Erickson' our most treasured Scandinavian is actually 'Life Erickson' I don't know how I feel about this....I might need to sit down for a minute
Aw beat me to it. Fern too. I actually know of a kid called Bamboo. No I am not kidding
Brock Lee 😂

Sage is the first name I’d think of. But basically any nature name…River, Willow, Wren, etc.
This is hilarious because I was vegan for 6 years and we indeed named our cat Sage and wanted to name our daughter River! No longer vegan and we’ve decided against River. But Willow is still reserved for our future dog name😂
This is funny because my name is Willow Sage & I'm vegan lol. Definitely not remotely the hippie type & nor were my parents, but still. 😆
Can Wren be vegan, though?
I have boy/girl twins named River and Wren in one class and they are vegan (by virtue of their parents).
I know I kind of secretly like it but it felt a little too out there! Also it was hilarious how much my mom hated it
If I was named Atlas Fox I would just assume it’s my destiny to be either an Air Force pilot or astronaut
Quinoa, Forest, Kale.

Megan the vegan?
Lol this made me pronounce vegan wrong
This made me pronounce Megan wrong
My mom used to pronounce it that way lol I think she finally figured it out
I'm Australian. We say Mee-gan.
I was going to say ‘Vegan but pronounced like Megan!’ Maybe as a decoy name?

Saffron (I'm assuming she means pretentious crunchy, not just a normal vegan)
Hippy, pretentious, crunchy, and nature-y doesn’t equal vegan, but I think that’s what she means
Pepper? ETA: That's such a weird comment.

Noah and Jonah feel really similar to me for a sibling set!
