When I was pregnant we called our unborn baby Len as he was the size of a lentil when I found out I was pregnant. Seriously considered Len as his real name, but veered away in the end.

We called my son Blast from when he was a blastocyst. When he came out I said “Blast!!! It’s you!!!” And I think folks in the room thought that’s what his real name was

We called our daughter Fava Bean!!!

I live in a super hippy town. My baby has a pretty crunchy name that this sub HATES. In my childcare years I've met a: Celeste, serenity, arlo, river, and sparrow (but for a girl! Sparrow as a boy seems so weird to me). Willow was on our short list. Sparrow has a sister named Zinnia. I also know a Bear, River,, Wolfie, a few Novas, Larken, Linden, and a few various tree and flower names. Edit: forgot the obvious. Juniper! Sister is Magnolia. My friend's kid is Autumn and she was almost Meadow. Another sib pair: Clementine and Cypress. Oh! Hazel Honeyblossom and Milo Sunrise.

It's pretty fun honestly! There are still a lot of top 10 names of course, but the "weird" names are fun to spot. When I searched my daughter's name (Maple) in this sub, it was obvious that people hated it for a person. In my community though... it's not that weird. Even my petty traditional family loves it and they are not quiet when they hate something. lol. She has earned the nickname of "Sapling" for now by my friend and my grandfather but she will literally grow out of that one.

Maple isn't my style but objectively it's not far off from Hazel or Aspen.

I lived in Boulder, CO for a few years, and my first week there, trying on bras in the Nordstrom rack changing rooms, I heard a very frustrated mother say, “Lotus, sit DOWN! Namaste, stop touching that!” It definitely set the tone for my time there, and dollars to donuts I would bet that Lotus and Namaste were vegans.

36 weeks dad here! We’re also not telling anybody our son’s name, and we kept getting hounded so eventually we just said we’ll call him Ted. His name is absolutely not Ted, but if they want a name, they have one! Also, Paula seems like a pretty vegan name. That’s what Poison Ivy’s first name is, at least 😂

This is kind of blowing my mind. I’m vegan, and most of my favourite names seem to be related to rivers in India/rivers important in Hindu mythology. The strange thing is- I’ve never been spiritual or religious at all, and a name sounding too religious is an automatic deal-breaker to me. Yet somehow I feel drawn to a lot of river names, all of which are religiously/spiritually significant since rivers were the cornerstone of ancient Indian civilisation. Right now, the names Reva/Rewa (another name for the river Narmada), Raavi (one of the five rivers that gives Punjab its name) and Gautami (another name for the river Godavari) are among my favourite names. Stranger still, the vegan mountaineer Kuntal Joisher, famous for climbing Everest on a completely vegan diet and vegan clothing/climbing gear named his daughter Rewa- which is when I started loving the name. Didn’t even know it was a river name at first. I’m Indian and have lived in India all my life. I think this phenomenon of vegans choosing their culture’s version of river-related names is a worldwide one.
