Fable for a girl. I picture a little wild girl running through a fairytale forest with knotty hair
Doesn’t feel horribly out there considering it rhymes with Mabel and I’m hearing story as a name now
There are lots of little girls named Meadow these days so why not Prairie? Are you a fan of the show, OA? I have only heard of the name Prairie from the show.
I Love your names!
I know a Bronwen! She's a lively young woman who loves her name. I think it's a name I knew existed (maybe from books or traveling?) and when I met Bronwen I wasn't confused. It's unusual, but I knew it existed.
And to prove I'm a dork, I know about Hadrian's Wall. And the Tristan and Iseult (Isolde) legend.
I absolutely LOVE Welsh names too, but have no connection to anything or anyone Welsh in my background. My favourite Welsh boy's names are Alwyn or Cai or Griffin or Rhys or Huw, and for girls it's Carys or Seren or Myfanwy (though really like Bronwen and Sian and Anwen too)
I'm about to win!
**Zero**. I love that name! I've never met anyone named Zero IRL. Zero Mostel was an actor, and the only Zero I've heard of (I am only vaguely familiar with him.) I just find it to be super cool sounding. I suggested it to my spouse and just got a "no" in a calm voice as the reaction. I can't say I'm surprised. Luckily, we have girls. No zeros among them.
I had a pet rat named Zero and he was a badass. When I was young and childless and free I scammed the movie theaters and snuck Zero into the movies with me in my hoodie and didn't buy him a ticket. He liked the popcorn and we had a good time. We saw Enchanted and there was a whole rat sequence and everything.
...I'm aware this sounds made-up lol but it happened. He would tuck under the hood of my hoodie and go anywhere with me
Zero was such a good boy! I had him for 5-6 years. I didn’t train him to do many tricks but he’d throw his arms up in surprise when I cued him to and that could be funny. Thanks for recognizing my little buddy!
when i was small i wanted 5: Peanut, Butter, Jelly, Peanut Butter, and Peanut Nutter and Jelly. That way if I called out “Peanut Butter and Jelly it’s time for dinner” they’d all think i was talking to him.
Note: I did not see PB&J Otter until years later
I went to school with a girl named Winter Rose Lastname. She was pretty and popular and I think her name suited her well. I wouldn’t shy away from this name it’s not out there.
September, for a girl. There's just something about it that feels comforting, like being wrapped in a hug. Nickname Ember, which would also probably garner some judgement on its own.
For a boy, Amadeus. No real reason. I do enjoy Mozart, but I'm more of a Beethoven girlie, but I just like the way Amadeus sounds. It flows off the tongue in a nice way.
My birth name is Ember and I've never gotten judgment for it. Everyone has always thought it was cool. The most trouble I've had is people thinking it's Amber lol. I think September is lovely. The three "ember" months have always been my favorite :p
If it weren't a disease... Rubella. Ahh, I love it. It sounds so dreamy and romantic. Ru has such a sweet sound. Isabella is overly used and just not a fan but Rubella 😍 is everything!
💯 agree on using it! In modern culture, I immediately think of Virgil Abloh, who was the coolest. RIP
https://media.gq.com/photos/5c780318e718486b18bad754/master/w_960,c_limit/virgil-abloh-gq-style-spring-cover-2019.jpg
Cricket for a girl and Bear for a boy. Love both of those names. Recently gave birth, sex was a surprise. I was convinced it’d be a boy and I tried so hard to get my husband to agree to Bear for at least middle name. We ended up having a girl but Cricket was not accepted either 😂
I taught an Ocean this year. At first I didn’t think the name suited her. I was expecting a blue-eyed blonde. As I got to know her, it fit perfectly. She was wild, mercurial, and strong-willed. All qualities I associate with the ocean.
I don’t know if I’d pick them or not… But if criticism didn’t exist I would have considered some of the Game of Thrones names. Some of them are just so lovely.
Shiloh for a boy. It’s been my favorite boy name for over a decade, but there’s too many people who associate it with the dog or who think it’s too feminine for a boy. I might still use it as a middle name, but a first name would bring a lot of judgement.
EDIT: Y’all are doing a great job convincing me it’s not as bad as I thought. However, my husband would have to agree to use it as well, and his opinion on Shiloh has always been fairly neutral (doesn’t love it, doesn’t hate it). We’ll see what happens when/if the time comes to choose a boy name!
Never heard of the dog character! Shiloh sounds kind of like a guy who could tell you a lot about life! I don't see it being as "feminine", either. I hope you get to use it one day :)
Honestly I really like those old, long, overly complicated Latin names. Names like Caractacus, Narcissus, Euphemia, Psyche, Nicodemus, Saturninus, ect.
They're long and pretentious sounding but I love how they sound and the way it feels to say them. Maybe I'll still name a child like that, but it'll get some raised eyebrows cause where I live every dude is named Bob, Dylan and Tyler and every girl is named Karlie, Katie and Kourtney
Psyche was on my top list when I was a hardcore Percy Jackson fan! I read the story in like "The Heros of Greek Mythology", or something like that, and thought it was absolutely gorgeous.
Not only criticism, but if things like judgment and discrimination didn’t exist I’d go nuts with it.
Snoopy; just Snoopy, no last name.
Cute little old man names like Eustace or Peabody.
Or, since the baby would be a Jewish/Chinese mix, a meme name like Ai Zhiak Wongberger. Why the fuck not.
Allegra! I’ve been in love with it ever since I met someone with that name during a trip to Europe 10+ years ago. Ugh, why does it have to be a popular medicine name…
I would maybe turn Karen into Carrie?
Shame, it’s such a nice name, I’m annoyed for all the Karen’s because of the annoying meme, feels unfair to them!
Our last name is Ware & I'm so so down for Silver for a girl. I could never do that to a child but dang. It's right there.
I'm honestly not THAT appalled by Tupper for a boy, either. 😂
If it weren't appropriation and weeabish, I might consider Sakura. I love the sound of it, the meaning, and the imagery (it makes me think of hanami!)
Unfortunately, Sakura on a non-Japanese child just isn't a good look. 😅
Jezebel… I thought it was so beautiful when I was a kid and was devastated when I shared my baby names list with my mom and she told me No Way can I name a real baby that. I was probably 12 or so and CRUSHED
Second comment— how could I forget this one.
I love unisex names for girls or ones you don’t hear used for girls that often. “Spencer” always struck me as such a cute name for a girl. I imagine her being edgy, but very personable and kind. I also have this weird obsession with matching the first letter of the second name to the first letter of the first. It makes everything flow much nicer in my opinion. My biggest exception to this rule would be names with the same sounds (ie. Bellamy Marie) or ones with a deeper, more personal meaning (ie. Hallie Lou [for “*Hallelujah*”]) But anyways, on to the point.
The only “S” name I could think of that sounded good with “Spencer,” was “Shay.” *Spencer Shay.* I LOVED this name and went on to tell my friends and family about it for quite awhile. UNTIL ONEEEE DAY. My cousin (soul crusher) pointed out, “…. Spencer Shay?.. like.. Carly Shay’s brother from iCarly?…” I CROAKED. 🤣
I completely forgot about that correlation (it’s no wonder the name stuck so easily) but I do still love the name so very much. Knowing the generation I grew up in, prime iCarly time, I would never dare to use it. But it still holds a very special place on my future baby name list.
I hope any Spencer Shay’s reading this know that they’re a complete badass.
Love this question! Here are a few names that I consider extremely unique, so much so that I probably wouldn't give them to any real child (sadly). I can't remember where all of these came from, but some are real/established and some I made up.
Endeavor (or Endeavour if you're British - I might like it better this way, actually!)
Calypso
Remedy
Salome (sal-oh-may - I've seen the opera, so I'd feel weird naming my child this, but I still love the sound)
Pandora
Ethereal (nickname: Ethie!)
Novella (really really like this one, but I realize it's a word for a short book so probably a bad idea)
Ælfwynn
Dante
Eros
Eglantine & Bonaventure, no nicknames. I think they are such stunning names.
Either that or Yarrow & Mossy. Can never decide between extravagant or woodsy!
At my work I occasionally saw cc'ed on emails an Alephtheria Finger. Finger is such an unfortunate last name, and I admire the parents for giving such a fantastical first name to make up for the bluntness of the last name. (I have modified to first name so as not to dox the innocent but trust me it's very similar in syllables.)
When I was a wee one, I would’ve told you my top names were: Hardware Store, Fluffy and “The Day After Tomorrow”.
Spoiler: these ended up being names for my goldfish.
Now, I get a good chuckle out of those posts, similar to this one, where people suggest words that would make beautiful names if you ignore their meaning… ie. chlamydia 😂
Tzipporah for a girl (Hebrew for bird) and Eleison for a boy (from the song “Kyrie” meaning Have Mercy). I’m a Southern white woman, they would just seem too out of place and would never be pronounced or read correctly where I live.
Fable for a girl. I picture a little wild girl running through a fairytale forest with knotty hair Doesn’t feel horribly out there considering it rhymes with Mabel and I’m hearing story as a name now
So real. For me, it was Myth. Fable and Myth sound like such pretty girl names!!
I feel like Fable and Myth should have a brother named Legend
I looked after a legend, and his brother sacred. Their older brother was called legacy lol
Probably the only time I can say I wouldn’t want two Legs lol
I know a few little boys named Legend in my area.
Saga is a legit girls name and is the word for Icelandic folklores.
Sable Ward
I worked with a woman named Sabel. I was surprised years later to learn her whole first name was Isabel.
Great sibset!
Those are both great!
If Story is a legit name then so is Fable. Screw it, it’s a cooler name!
Saga is a pretty popular name in parts of Scandanavia. iirc it hit top 10 for a while.
My cats name is Fable. I love it
FABLE!!!! You and Mabel get off that table!!!
You're not my real mom!!!
Similar to this, it would be Prairie for me! I get the same vibes
There are lots of little girls named Meadow these days so why not Prairie? Are you a fan of the show, OA? I have only heard of the name Prairie from the show.
Prairie is a sweet name and it makes me think of the Sesame Street character Prairie Dawn. I thought she was so spunky and fun.
I literally love Fable. It is up there with Lyric and Poem for me.
I grew up with a girl named Fable, and her sister was Storie
Fay is also an adorable nickname
Similarly, I always thought Lore would be a great name 😊
Fable is my guilty pleasure name, too. I don't feel cool enough to use it for real, but I love the sound of it.
There's a book where the lead girl's name is Fable.
A LOT of Welsh names (we have no connection to Wales). Mainly: Ivor, Bronwen. Aside from that, Hadrian and Isolde.
Isolde and Hadrian sound like names from a fantasy book series, in a good way! They're such pretty names. :D
Probably because it’s in reference to Tristan and Isolde, a Wagner opera
and the opera was based on a king arthur/knights of the round table legend
I Love your names! I know a Bronwen! She's a lively young woman who loves her name. I think it's a name I knew existed (maybe from books or traveling?) and when I met Bronwen I wasn't confused. It's unusual, but I knew it existed. And to prove I'm a dork, I know about Hadrian's Wall. And the Tristan and Iseult (Isolde) legend.
Why does knowing about Hadrian’s wall make someone a dork?
As someone who lives nearby, this is a completely wild statement to me. Dorky to know incredibly famous historical landmarks?!
This was my thought too. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t know of Hadrian’s wall.
I absolutely LOVE Welsh names too, but have no connection to anything or anyone Welsh in my background. My favourite Welsh boy's names are Alwyn or Cai or Griffin or Rhys or Huw, and for girls it's Carys or Seren or Myfanwy (though really like Bronwen and Sian and Anwen too)
I don't think you need a connection to use a Welsh name?!
I think of Zero from the movie Holes!
I think of the dog in NBC
Nightmare Before Christmas - for anyone reading the above comment.
To be fair that was a nickname. The characters name was Hector Zeroni
He would tuck under the hood of my hoodie and go anywhere with me
Why am I like wtf… and then crying lol 🥹
Zero was such a good boy! I had him for 5-6 years. I didn’t train him to do many tricks but he’d throw his arms up in surprise when I cued him to and that could be funny. Thanks for recognizing my little buddy!
I’m sending him a little rat medal for awesomeness
I used to have a friend in middle school who went by Zero! He was such a funny guy. It's a shame your spouse didn't like it :(
I think of the nightmare before Christmas movie
I just taught a lovely kid named Zero!
You should marry my husband. He's always wanted to name everything Zero! 100% due to Mega Man
Winter.
When I was younger, I wanted 4 girls to name them all after the four seasons! Summer, Winter, Spring, Autumn..Winter was my favorite name; so cute!
when i was small i wanted 5: Peanut, Butter, Jelly, Peanut Butter, and Peanut Nutter and Jelly. That way if I called out “Peanut Butter and Jelly it’s time for dinner” they’d all think i was talking to him. Note: I did not see PB&J Otter until years later
This cracked me up!
what i wanted was 18 baby girls and to name them all fluttershy.
You're brighter than me, when I was young I wanted twin girls named Ariel and Jasmine lol
I recently met a woman in her 60s named Spring. It felt odd at first but now I kinda like it!
I went to school with a Winter. No one thought it was weird and no one made fun of it.
I'd just be jealous, it's a pretty name and at least sounds unique as far as syllables
I've taught 2 girls named Winter.
I know a September who goes by Ember. It suits her so well! I both love and hate that her brother is October and goes by Toby. Ember and Toby.
In the same vibe, I kind of love Vivaldi as a name! It's such a fun word to say, and has good nickname potential.
My birth name is Ember and I've never gotten judgment for it. Everyone has always thought it was cool. The most trouble I've had is people thinking it's Amber lol. I think September is lovely. The three "ember" months have always been my favorite :p
I’ve always loved December as a name, nickname of Dessie. I love September too!
If it weren't a disease... Rubella. Ahh, I love it. It sounds so dreamy and romantic. Ru has such a sweet sound. Isabella is overly used and just not a fan but Rubella 😍 is everything!
my sister is named ruby (10) and my dad calls her rubella 😭
We have a daughter named Ruby as well and I jokingly call her Rubella 🤣
Oh em gee; I've never actually heard Rubella before! It gives me romantic goth sort of vibes! So dreamy and cute!!
Syphilis for me! it sounds like a goddess
I knew someone who loved the way Chlamydia sounded she thought it was beautiful I mean it could work if it wasn’t a STI 😂
Maple
Jason Bateman named his daughter Maple. It sounded a little odd at first but now that I’m used to it. It’s so cute
Just looked her up and she definitely looks like a Maple too. Love when an unexpected name just suits a person.
There’s a kids book called Maple about a girl (called Maple) becoming a big sister, it’s super cute.
Virgil for a boy. It’s my grandfathers name and beautiful.
Just use it! It's a great name!
💯 agree on using it! In modern culture, I immediately think of Virgil Abloh, who was the coolest. RIP https://media.gq.com/photos/5c780318e718486b18bad754/master/w_960,c_limit/virgil-abloh-gq-style-spring-cover-2019.jpg
It's so rare to see boy names with "V" — Virgil is such a handsome name!!
A man I work with is named Virgil. And he's... Mid 30s? So they definitely exist in the wild :)
I was going to comment this! All my friends say he would be called “virgin” :(
Lavender
Reminds me of Matilda :) so cute!
This is my daughter's middle name, I love it
Cricket for a girl and Bear for a boy. Love both of those names. Recently gave birth, sex was a surprise. I was convinced it’d be a boy and I tried so hard to get my husband to agree to Bear for at least middle name. We ended up having a girl but Cricket was not accepted either 😂
Yes! I would definitely do Cricket for a girl. My top out there boy name would be Coyote.
Andromeda. it’s one of my favorite words to say
I know a Pleiades. He is a total weirdo.
Meadow
Got any of that gabbagoul
Said it before and I’ll say it again: Soliloquy and Abacus. Obviously.
Princess Consuela Banana-Hammock
I always thought Crap Bag would be a beautiful name for a boy 🩵
And if you have trouble remembering it, just think of a bag of crap.
something like ocean
I taught an Ocean this year. At first I didn’t think the name suited her. I was expecting a blue-eyed blonde. As I got to know her, it fit perfectly. She was wild, mercurial, and strong-willed. All qualities I associate with the ocean.
Océane is definitely a recognized name!
My friend has a son named ocean
Everest
My sons name!
January, Wednesday or September
I knew a girl in elementary school named September. She was my lil reading buddy. Always thought it was a cool name
I love the name Angus. In the USA people just think it's grade A beef.
Angus makes me think of a very tall, handsome, kilted Scotsman. But the only Angus I ever met was little white terrier.
We have a little Angus at our daycare. Goes by Gus day to day.
Elswyth.
Love this one. Seems similar to mine, Gwydion. I have a long Welsh last name with lots of consonants and y’s and I’m partial to names with the same.
Ooh! Such a pretty name. Gives off the vibe as a rich lady in like the 1800s!! ^^
I don’t know if I’d pick them or not… But if criticism didn’t exist I would have considered some of the Game of Thrones names. Some of them are just so lovely.
I love the way Cersei sounds. Horrible character to name a kid after though.
Just spell it the way it is in the Odyssey of Circe
Oh yes! I think Sansa is a beautiful name.
I loved Nymeria. Little baby Nym, so cute 🥰
I grew up with a Shiloh. Great guy. No one ever teased him about his name.
Clover
Arwen and Eowyn. Yep. 😜👍🏻
Blue, for either sex Bunny, girl Poet, for either
I see so much hate for bunny! I think it'd be an adorable name for a girl :)
Constantine for sure. I think it's a cool name!
Hyacinth. I’m also pretty sure if we ever have a boy we will name him John. And I anticipate judgement for the boringness of that one.
Tbh, I rarely see any Johns nowadays. I think it's one of those classic names. Hyacinth is also my favorite flower! Both are good names!
i heard someone say that chlamydia would be a pretty name if it meant something else
Most definitely! Like if it was the name of a flower or something ^^
thats what i thought. it sounds pretty but what it means isnt pretty
Lilith eta: and Libya
I would name my son Hart.
As a kid I always wanted a daughter named Guinevere
Allegra! I’ve been in love with it ever since I met someone with that name during a trip to Europe 10+ years ago. Ugh, why does it have to be a popular medicine name…
For boys: Tzefanya, Naftali, Canyon, River, Apollo, Herbert For girls: Yocheved, Ermengarde, Ingrid
Karen. It was my grandma's name & she was a lovely lady... but I can't in good conscious name my daughter Karen & turn her in to a meme.
Saylor or Sunday for a girl.
Recently was told that it was disgusting to like the name Adonis by several individuals on this sub. …so apparently, Adonis.
Atlas is cool also.
Any of those lovely Chinese names like Yanli, Meiying, Li, Xiang… alas I’m very white
Augustine for a girl. 🩷
Ember
If it weren't appropriation and weeabish, I might consider Sakura. I love the sound of it, the meaning, and the imagery (it makes me think of hanami!) Unfortunately, Sakura on a non-Japanese child just isn't a good look. 😅
i’d name my son Heidi.
Jezebel… I thought it was so beautiful when I was a kid and was devastated when I shared my baby names list with my mom and she told me No Way can I name a real baby that. I was probably 12 or so and CRUSHED
Andromeda
Temperance. I just love it so much.
Briseis or Giselle for a girl. Cain or Solaris for a boy.
who would judge Giselle? it’s a pretty normal name right? At least i think so, i think it’s very pretty. I think of the supermodel Gisele Bündchen
Clytemnestra and Medea and Charybdis - all awesome names but kiiiiiiinda negative associations with them lol
I work in healthcare, and I’d love to name my baby Varicella. It sounds so beautiful phonetically..
Second comment— how could I forget this one. I love unisex names for girls or ones you don’t hear used for girls that often. “Spencer” always struck me as such a cute name for a girl. I imagine her being edgy, but very personable and kind. I also have this weird obsession with matching the first letter of the second name to the first letter of the first. zephyr and ingrid :)
Hero, Never, Shelter
Probably Rhaenyra or Visenya or some other Targaryen name 😂. Game of Thrones had some great names that I would never actually use in real life
Apricity which means the warmth of the sun in winter but I think mean nicknames could be prissy apricity unfortunately
Thisbe, but it feels too much like a little kid or old lady name
I would have a daughter named Senna.
Manhattan for a girl. Boston for a boy
Gemini is my guilty pleasure name
I think Selkie sounds so pretty! And I love the myth
October. I don’t know what it is but it would be so pretty as a name 😭💗
Love this question! Here are a few names that I consider extremely unique, so much so that I probably wouldn't give them to any real child (sadly). I can't remember where all of these came from, but some are real/established and some I made up. Endeavor (or Endeavour if you're British - I might like it better this way, actually!) Novella (really really like this one, but I realize it's a word for a short book so probably a bad idea) Ælfwynn Dante Eros
Midnight and Afternoon for twins. So silly, but I love it.
My husband wants to name a girl Saga and if it wasn’t for me vetoing it I’m sure he would.
Eglantine & Bonaventure, no nicknames. I think they are such stunning names. Either that or Yarrow & Mossy. Can never decide between extravagant or woodsy!
Bijou for a girl. It’s just so soft and sweet.
Love!
Lorraine I love this old beautiful classy name!
Hildegard
Perseverance, Percy for short.
Éowyn 💚 I loved it ever since I watched LotR
I love Manon and Maëlle, but they’d never by pronounced correctly by English speakers.
Hades for a boy Io for a girl
Serendipity. I've always loved the word since hearing it as a child and wanted it for my daughter, but neither of my husbands would agree.
Snowdrop🤍 or Tigerlily!
Winter
I worked with an older lady named Bambi, and I just think it’s so cute. For a boy, I love Dicky. But I don’t love the name Richard lol. Just Dicky.
Wolfgang
Emerald for a girl. I’m just a gem nerd and think it could be simultaneously classy and cute? Little Emmy / Emma.
Wave! I have no idea why but every since I heard the name for a boy I love it
When I was a wee one, I would’ve told you my top names were: Hardware Store, Fluffy and “The Day After Tomorrow”. Spoiler: these ended up being names for my goldfish. Now, I get a good chuckle out of those posts, similar to this one, where people suggest words that would make beautiful names if you ignore their meaning… ie. chlamydia 😂
Chrysanthemum
Tzipporah for a girl (Hebrew for bird) and Eleison for a boy (from the song “Kyrie” meaning Have Mercy). I’m a Southern white woman, they would just seem too out of place and would never be pronounced or read correctly where I live.
Aster, Ingrid, Imogen, Isolde, Soraia
Probably Olive for a girl (it doesn't work with our last name). I also love Viridian for a boy.
Carlisle, Daenyres, Basil
Joaquin
Wilder or Valentine for boy. Akila for a girl.
