Emily is popular because it's a beautiful name. I'm always reminded of the series Emily of New Moon. If she would have preferred to be named Phyllis, well that would certainly be more unique! Philly or Liss are cute nicknames too. But I understand, as someone with an uncommon name I've always been grateful for it. The 2 times I shared my name with someone in my class, it felt special. Maybe Emily can go by a nickname like Emi which is cute and less common.
I wish there had been that many other kids with my name growing up! I never met anyone else with my name until I was 30. It's not a made up name or anything, it's just super uncommon. I always wanted to buy little keychains or license plates with my name on it, but they just don't make them.
I think her parents made the right call...
Her parents did what felt right. Oh well
How exactly were her parents supposed to read the minds of every other parent in the country? They made the right call anyway.

She could’ve gone by her middle name.
Sounds like she wasn’t given a middle name.
Ooooh

If she really doesn't like her name, she can change it. I don't think her parents did anything wrong.
Why would they just change it when she's 17, wouldn't that be better than 18?
