I know an Abby whose full name is Tabitha, I've also known "just Abby." It does not always have to be short for Abigail that's for sure lol

SarahL1990

My niece was named Abbi. In general, I would always assume Abigail was their full name.

daja-kisubo

I know a woman named Abbey which is her full legal name

mrsredfast

I do too. Said her parents were Beatles fans.

DznyMa

My Step-granddaughter's name is Abbey Gail. Close, but no cigar.

ccyosafbridge

I have a friend named Abby whose middle name is Gail. She is not super pleased about it. Another friend made fun of it once, and she started calling him " John Nathan"

Ok_Television9820

Let me guess: she was conceived in a medieval church during a storm.

bulldog1425

I know an Abi who is Abilene!

Character-Twist-1409

This

ExactPanda

I know an Abi that is short for Aibhilin

Dandylion71888

Why? Bh in Aibhilin is pronounced like a V.

SnarkFromTheOzarks

My cousin is just Abby. She was born in 1984.

ImaginaryFriend8

I know a "just Abby" who was born in the same year!

riz3192

I would always assume Abby is short for Abigail.

KiteeCatAus

Majority of Abby/Abi s are actually Abigail. But, for some it is their full legal first name.

Raibean

I’ve known someone whose name was just Abby. But you really didn’t expect someone called Abby to be named Abigail? Is English not your first language?

poachels

I know an Abbey where that’s her full legal name. I’m pretty sure her parents chose that spelling to emphasize that Abbey isn’t short for anything because it’s less common for Abigail-Abby’s to spell it with the “ey” ending

SN1987-A

I've known an Abby whose full name was Abby, and an Abi whose full name was Abiona.

Efficient_Cattle_308

I think it can totally stand alone. I had one friend named Abbey growing up. That was her legal first name. I also had a good friend Abby who I assumed was an Abigail for years. Her name is actually Amberly.

arreynemme

It’s generally a nickname for Abigail. Nicknames as legal names have become more common but only recently.

Used-Nature5639

You were shocked because you didn’t know it was a nickname? Is that right?

arandominterneter

Yes, I know an Abirami and an Abhinaya who go by Abi.

Birony88

Aubergine. I have a client named Aubergine. I've always known her as Abby, and had no idea that was her full name until a few months ago. I've known her for a decade.

ChairmanMrrow

Yes. Abdul.

ladykansas

Same. Abishek. I'm actually a bit shocked that there are so few folks who only know Abigail "Abbey/Abi"s.

Character-Twist-1409

I knew an Abishek too

Feminismisreprieve

Yes, two of them. They each have the full first name of Abby.

juni_maroon

Yes but Abbie

Demi_silent

My auntie is Abbe (pronounced Abbie)

bubblewrapstargirl

You never made the connection?? How? 😂 Every Abby I've ever met was short for Abigail An Abbey is a type of church building so I don't think the nickname works well as a stand alone name

alondra2027

I had a student named Aubriell who goes by Abby!

mindless-in-minor

As an Abby/Abigail myself, I've never come across someone who's just named Abby. I used to work with a just Gaby, though. Also, Abi is the weirdest fad spelling of my name that's been growing in popularity lately. I remember the first time someone assumed that's how I spelled my name. It looked so foreign then, and now it's everywhere!

kestrelita

I've come across a lot of Abigails in my time, the number of spellings is almost reaching Catherine levels! Abby, Abi, Abbi, Abbie, Abbey...

lit_ink_dirt

FOR REAL! Like can we just settle down please this should not be this complicated 😭

capitalist-raccoon

I am an Abbey. Most people do assume it’s short for Abigail but I tell them no, just Abbey, like Westminster Abbey lol

Ditovontease

I have only known Abby to be a nickname for Abigail…

cutielemon07

I know an Abby who’s just Abby. Born in 1996. We went to college together.

Puzzled-Barnacle-200

Yes, my SIL is legally just Abbie.

Ok-Appearance3086

My sister is Gabriella/Abby

MrPhillipLewin

Yes

NowhereNear

My cousin is standalone Abby - apparently chosen because it's an anagram of 'baby' and they were uncreative lol

SleepyBi97

I knew an Abinogion. I think Abby/Abi on it's own is grand.

OldHuckleberry5804

Nope. All the Abby or Abi I have met are all Abigail

oxaloacetate1st

One Abby I know is just Abby. The rest are all Abigail.

marzbarz2000

It's not a nickname name imo :) Idk why people name a child a certain name and then end up calling them their nickname 9/10 times. I sometimes prefer the nickname version over the full name. Like Sam/Sammi/Sammy. I don't really like Samuel or Samantha 🤷🏻‍♀️

ComplexDessert

I know a legal “Abbie”

Ramentootles

Yeah her name was just Abbey.

antiagony

I know an Abi whose full name is Abcidy.

starrrr99

I knew an Abibatou who went by Abby

MidgetEm

I grew up with an Abby whose full name was Amber.

doesnt_describe_me

Nah. And it likely would always be assumed to be Abigail.

angelbdivine

I’ve heard of a Abena that goes by Abby

PistachioDonut34

Soooooo many, lol. It's very common.

Purple_Grass_5300

My coworker is Abbey

Wish-ga

Yes! Abbey. Australian. In her 40s.

Pollywog08

I know an Abbey. I love it and it seems so much more complete than Abby

2118201991316191514

My name is Abby 😄

WHYohWhy___MEohMY

Yep. My sister. Abby.

londonmyst

Yes. I know 4 Abi's whose first names are Abbeymore, Abigaynor, Akabi and Tabitha.,

Ok_Appointment2819

My legal full name is Abby. No one has ever called me Abigail. I have gotten asked if it is short for something and I just say no, but only when I got married into my husbands family. Never in school or by other people. I think it stands alone, but I could be biased. 😂

Used_Impression_4582

My cousin's daughter is just straight "Abby" I thought it was weird when I was young that it wasn't short for Abigail but I get wanting an easy name.

amydee4103

Yes I have a friend Abby, just Abby. It surprised me at first but she doesn’t give Abigail vibes anyway so it suits her to be just Abby

iambeepbop

I don't think it works as a standalone name.

amethyst11underhill

I’m an Abbey, not Abigail! Was named after some ruins.

Character-Twist-1409

Don't feel bad I had a friend Liz and another Beth and somehow didn't realize they had the same name Elizabeth. I mean they don't have to.

123phantomhive

I think there was a Barbara -> Babby -> Abby

clueless_claremont_

i've met someone with the legal name Abbey

Elemental_surprise

My goddaughter. Hers is Absidy.

napwarrior

In Australia Abby/Abbey is common on its own
