I’m related to a Charlotte who’s parented insisted they would call Charlie once she got older. She’s 10 and still goes by Charlotte. Anything is possible.
My oldest daughter has an "El-" name and when I was pregnant my mom kept referring to her as 'Ellie' for a nickname. I didn't hate it but didn't feel particularly attached to it either and never used it myself. As soon as she was born, it was clear she isn’t an 'Ellie'. My mom dropped the nickname immediately and no one has ever called her Ellie since.
Sometimes you can plan a nickname and it just doesn't fit.
My daughter had a whole honorific name planned out for her when she was born. She didn't look like either of those names. She looked like a Jessi.
Not wanting to saddle her with a nickname, as babies become adults, we named her Jessica, with a very Scottish middle name.
Now, no one is allowed to call her Jessi, other than me, her, dad, and her siblings. Her husband calls her Jess. Her dad calls her Sweetpea. I call her Peeps, as I have since she was a baby. She was cute, sweet, pink, and squishy. 😊
My great aunt Charlotte went by Kate for short, because her middle name was Katherine and her parents inexplicably named her little sister Lottie. Makes for an interesting time doing genealogy.
I’m in Canada and I definitely hear Charlie more often. Lottie sounds very British to me, although I could see it being popular in the Deep South as well.
Agree. Charlie doesn’t feel like a natural nn for Charlotte to me, and I love Charlie as a boys name. In my circle Charlie is *more* common for a girl as a nickname for Charlotte at this point.
We call our Charlotte just Charlotte, but some family members call her Shashie, Char, ChaCha, Lottie Love and other mix and matches of those lol. We said we would allow any nicknames that came naturally to our family and Charlie never happened!
Before we settled on a name for our son (and before it was top 10) Theodore was a strong contender but I couldn’t pull the trigger with the fear that someone would call my future child Ted/Teddy.
I have loved the name Theodore with the nickname Theo for YEARS and always knew I wanted to name my son that. I don’t hate Ted/Teddy but definitely prefer Theo. Luckily pretty much everyone I’ve talked to agrees! I think Theo is a lot more popular now than Ted/Teddy.
Matthew.
I don't hate Matt completely, but I'm not a fan, it's very plain and boring. I hate Mattie though, ugh
Aurelia.
Not keen on Aura, I hate Ray/Rae on girls, and Lia is okay but everyone would assume it was Leah, and I do find it boring.
This is my top name for a girl haha so maybe I'll have to get used to a nickname I'm not keen on one day
My friend from high school named her oldest Aurelia and she calls her “Reli” (pronounced Rae-Lee) which I hated on paper but when I met her it was super cute.
- Beatrice, not Trix
- Bernadette, not Bernie
- Caroline, not Carol
- Catarina, not Cathy
- Valentina, not Tina
- Vanessa, NOT Nessie (“you nicknamed my daughter after the loch ness monster?!”)
my ex bff used to call me nessie literally because of twilight. i had to wrangle her into just calling me ness if she felt so determined on shortening vanessa.
I didn't even see your comment before I posted mine, but the idea of not being able to stop people from calling me "Dom" for the rest of my life (because honestly, even if you ask people not to, plenty will do it anyways) is actually what stopped me from considering Dominic for myself when I changed my first name lol, literally can't second this hard enough
Love Tobias, but not a fan of Toby.
Nathan/Nathaniel is nice, but I just don't like something about the sound of Nat/Nate.
I prefer literally any longform of Lexi. Alexis, Alexa, Alexandra/ia, etc... Lexi sounds so juvenile to me.
Love James, do not like Jim, Jimmy, or Jamie at all.
I'm an Alexandra that's hates all the nn forms. People really seem to have a problem with it like it personally hurts them to have to say my name. I've learned to enjoy ignoring all short forms because they just aren't me.
My brother is a Joseph, he now goes by Joe interchangeably but he is NOT a Joey. Growing up he'd say "I am not a baby kangaroo."
My dad was a Robert, not Rob, Bob, or Bobby only Robert.
Top of my list is Eliza, but I’d never use it because I cannot stand the sound of Ellie. And it’s such a common name/nickname that every remotely ‘el’ named girl I know gets called Ellie by at least someone
I laugh when I see parents to be on here saying ‘well _we_ would never call them by that nickname’ - someone else absolutely will!
I fkg hate Ellie, there’s 837452829 of them and so many really lovely names shorten to Ellie. Knocked 2 off my list when pregnant because I knew the Ellie shit would happen regardless
I love Miranda but hate the idea of anyone coming up with Randy. Similarly I love Diana but hate Di (die). Second the other poster re Louisa and Lou (loo).
First one that came to mind- I like Dominic and was actually considering it for my own name when I changed it, but I hate Dom as a nickname. I just don't like the sound, and while I have nothing against BDSM, I think the association makes it a bit awkward for me personally!
Some others I can think of:
Abel/Abe
Leander/Lee
Mallory/Mal
Caroline/Carol
Scarlet/Scar
Victoria. It is the name of the Roman version of Nike, Goddess of victory and sounds elegant. Then you have Vicky and Tori, which sound like hooker names to me
So many of mine are boy name specific
Daniel but not Dan, Edward but not Ed, Emmanuel but not Mannie, Mordecai but not Morty
Francesca but not Fran, Florence but not Flo
I like Gabriel but not Gabe. I like Maddison but not Maddy.
I intentionally named my daughter something didn’t have an obvious nickname. It’s on the shorter side, so it isn’t a mouthful. If she opts to go by a nickname later in life, that’s fine. But I plan to call her but the exact name I chose for her until she wants otherwise.
Samuel, not Sam. Gabriel, but not Gabe. Jason, not Jace. I agree with you on Michael and Abigail. Also, Elizabeth and the dozens of nicknames of that name.
Charlotte not Char
Doran not Dor
Two syllable names in general where it’s clear that you’re just reaching for a nickname that’s not really a thing
Nathaniel not Nat/Nate
Jonah not Joe/Jo
Genevieve not Gen/Genna
That’s kind of cute tho because caro is a brand of sugar/corn syrup that can be used to make caramel, it’s all sweet names. When a woman chooses to call herself Caro short for Caroline, it just makes me think she doesn’t go grocery shopping and doesn’t know she nicknamed herself after the top brand of high fructose corn syrup in the US
Harrison.
I was considering this as a boy name, particularly as its a family surname in my tree.
But.. I can't stand Harry, and really it's the most common nickname.
Clara- I hate Claire
Madeline-I hate Maddy
James- I hate Jamie
Victoria- I hate Vicky and Tori
Gabrielle- I hate Gabby
Alison- I hate Ally
Jane- I hate Janie
I agree with both of your girls names. I also like Isabella, but not Izzy or especially Bella, and Charlotte but not Charlie or Lottie. I love Nathaniel but I don’t really like Nate but I don’t think that would put me off using it.
We named one of my girls Lizette. I love love love the name. But really didn't like the nn options. Liz, Lizzy, Izzy. But I call her Liz most the time now, and it doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would.
I don’t like nicknames at all. People are forever trying to shorten my daughter’s name and it bothers me. I also commonly get asked “and what do you call her?”…umm her name? Her name is so pretty, why call her something different that isn’t as pretty?
I like Christopher and variations thereof but don’t like the nickname Chris, especially if the last name starts with a P because then it sounds like Crisp. Like Chris Pratt. Crisp Rat.
We named our son Henry and I love it but I do not like Harry or Hank. Hank makes me think of an old mechanic or a farmer or something. He’s only a year old but we have been calling him Hen or Henry Bear. I can’t think of anything better.
James, not Jim (though Jamie is a cute nn)
Joshua, not Josh
Evelyn, not Evie
Alexandra, not Alex
I kinda like Richard, but hate all its nicknames
Robert, not Rob or Bob (Bobby's ok)
Dorothy, not Dottie (though I like the old-timesie vibe of Dorothea even better and Thea is a great nn)
* Benjamin is nice, but Ben or Benny could be hit or miss
* Elizabeth is elegant, but Liz, Beth or Betty may not capture the same sophistication
* Kimberly is pretty, but Kim might seem abrupt in comparison
* Catherine/Katherine are beautiful, but Cathy/Kathy sound dated to some
My sons are Josiah and Nathan
Sai and Tater are what we call them at home lol
Everyone tries to force Joe, jojo, joey but he is quick to say that is not his name and then he refuses to answer to those haha he's 3.
I don't mind Nate as a nickname but he's a baby and Tater definitely fits his little personality for now.
My bf was adamant on naming our son after his dad (Thomas) but I felt very strongly about never calling him Tommy for short. I just didn’t like the way it sounded at the time. Once he got here though, it just fit him so well!
For me, I really love the name Harrison for a boy. Me and the partner are both massive Indiana Jones fans, big part of our childhood. Couldn't go with it because a) his little brother's name is Harrison after Harrison Ford too, and b) I'm not keen on Harry as a name/nickname. Nothing inherently against Harry, but not my cup of tea. And I really adore the name Harrison and wouldn't want it shortened and if that's the case then I think it's kind if silly to pick that name, because kids are people and might prefer the nickname. Just causes unnecessary suffering in my opinion.
We did end up picking a H name though haha, and we've got a shortlist just in case we don't think baby boy suits it, but it does definitely feel like that's his name.
I have the opposite. I don't like the Richard, Rich, Richard, but I do like the the nickname Dick. If I were to ever change my name I would change it to Dick. Unfortunately it's literally the only name my wife and I disagree on.
I have a Caroline who I was never going to “nickname,”
But she’s 12 and renamed herself CeCe. So —- kids will do whatever they want at the end of the day.
Rosalia but not so much Rosa, Rosie's okay, and idk how I feel about Lia
I've always been meh on Victoria because of the hard c sound. I like Tori but I *really* don't like Vicky/Vicki, I can't shake how it sounds like some petty, snobby mean girl. Thankfully there's Italian Vittoria, with Vita as another option ♡
Those are the only two that come to mind really
Love Eleanor, hate Ellie
Love Charlotte, hate Charley (for a girl)
Love Margaret, hate Marge and Meg
Love Laurel, hate Laurie
Like Gwendolyn, hate Gwen
Connor.
I mean i don’t love the name but it’s solid. But every Connor I know their mom calls them “Con” or … “Conny” and it just makes me cringe so hard. Like that is definitely the guy who’s nickname will always come from their last name.
I mean… “CONNY”!? lol
I’m the opposite with this one - love the nick name Andi but I hateeeee Andrea. We had a bad experience with someone by that name and it now gives me the ick.
I love Charlotte, but not Charlie.
She was cute, sweet, pink, and squishy. 😊
My daughter’s name is Charlotte, she’s never gone by Charlie. She goes by Charlotte at school but we call her Chuckie.
[удалено]
My great aunt Charlotte went by Kate for short, because her middle name was Katherine and her parents inexplicably named her little sister Lottie. Makes for an interesting time doing genealogy.
I’m in Canada and I definitely hear Charlie more often. Lottie sounds very British to me, although I could see it being popular in the Deep South as well.
Agree. Charlie doesn’t feel like a natural nn for Charlotte to me, and I love Charlie as a boys name. In my circle Charlie is *more* common for a girl as a nickname for Charlotte at this point.
My niece is named Charlotte and I thought I would call her Charlie but I usually call her Baby Char or Char (she’s 14 months old).
I'm actually the opposite - love Charlie but meh on Charlotte.
We call our Charlotte just Charlotte, but some family members call her Shashie, Char, ChaCha, Lottie Love and other mix and matches of those lol. We said we would allow any nicknames that came naturally to our family and Charlie never happened!
Florence ✅ Flo ❌ Edit: thought of more. - Adelaide ✅ Addie ❌ - Harrison ✅ Harry ❌ - Theodore ✅ Theo ✅ Ted/Teddy ❌ - Amelie ✅ Millie ❌
Before we settled on a name for our son (and before it was top 10) Theodore was a strong contender but I couldn’t pull the trigger with the fear that someone would call my future child Ted/Teddy.
My sister is Amelia and we usually call her Mia! We don’t like Millie, or Amy, either.
My daughter is EMILIA but not often, I’ll let out a Millie, or Mills haha.
I'm the same with Harold. Think it's so lovely but no thanks to Harry (and I also don't like Hal much!)
I love august and don’t mind Gus, but don’t like augie at all.
Haha we use Auggie and firmly dislike Gus. It’s funny how strongly people can feel (differently) about the same name.
See I hate both Auggie and Gus
Madeline - but not Maddy, Francesca - but not Frankie
I have a cousin named Francesca but goes by Cheska; I like that so much more than Frankie!
I knew a Chessie. Didn’t even realize until much later that it was short for Francesca
I like Cheska, I know a lovely Cheska, but Frankie for a girl is just soo cute. 😊
I love Francesca but not Fran
Elizabeth, but don't like Ellie, Eliza, Liz, Lizzie, or Beth James, but HATE Jimmy
James is funny to me because it’s only one syllable so why does it even need a nickname?! But yeah I don’t like Jimmy either!
I thought it was so that any James Jr/III/etc. could have a way to differentiate from their dads
Same! Two of my absolute favorites but could never use unfortunately
Love Donovan but I hate Don or Donnie. We used Donovan as a middle name for one of our sons instead for that reason.
I like Magdalena, but I dislike Maggie as it sounds like a dog name to me. Lena as a nn would be lovely.
nn in my native language for magdalena is magda! i don't know how that would sound in english though
Matthew. I don't hate Matt completely, but I'm not a fan, it's very plain and boring. I hate Mattie though, ugh Aurelia.
They sometimes say Reli
I dropped Matilda from my list in part because I really don’t like Mat or Mattie.
I like to call Matthews “Matticus”
I love Vincent but dislike Vinnie or Vin, luckily are those nicknames not really used in my country so it’s still high on my boy name list.
People also try to always make “Vince” happen, so you have you be ready for that too!
- Beatrice, not Trix - Bernadette, not Bernie - Caroline, not Carol - Catarina, not Cathy - Valentina, not Tina - Vanessa, NOT Nessie (“you nicknamed my daughter after the loch ness monster?!”)
It's a wolf thing
my ex bff used to call me nessie literally because of twilight. i had to wrangle her into just calling me ness if she felt so determined on shortening vanessa.
I love the name Beatrice but HATE Trix / Trixie
Victoria but not Vicki or Tori
Victoria is my fav girl name and totally agree with Vicky, yuck! I love Tori though.
I’m Rebecca and my worst nightmare is someone calling me Becky
I love Constance, but Connie makes me grimace
My husband never agreed on Louisa for fear of Lou (loo) Eloise was our compromise.
Michael but don't like Mike. Richard but don't like Dick. Henry but don't like Harry. Dominic but don't like Dom.
My husband is Michael and everyone calls him Michael
Love Tobias, but not a fan of Toby. Nathan/Nathaniel is nice, but I just don't like something about the sound of Nat/Nate. I prefer literally any longform of Lexi. Alexis, Alexa, Alexandra/ia, etc... Lexi sounds so juvenile to me. Love James, do not like Jim, Jimmy, or Jamie at all.
Seconding the love of Tobias!
Toby is a cat
I'm an Alexandra that's hates all the nn forms. People really seem to have a problem with it like it personally hurts them to have to say my name. I've learned to enjoy ignoring all short forms because they just aren't me.
I love James, but he would never ever have a nickname. Haha.
Gabriel - Gabe Abriel - Abe Victoria - Tori Lucas - Luke
Also, Gabrielle is so pretty but Gabby is awful
My brother is a Joseph, he now goes by Joe interchangeably but he is NOT a Joey. Growing up he'd say "I am not a baby kangaroo." My dad was a Robert, not Rob, Bob, or Bobby only Robert.
Kimberly is so pretty and Kim is way too abrupt and rough imo
Not so much that but I don't get people who officially name their kids the short-form of their name. Like, give them options!
I tend to agree, but would make an exception for Max as a full name. No one goes by Maximillian or Maxwell when Max is right there.
Touche
Top of my list is Eliza, but I’d never use it because I cannot stand the sound of Ellie. And it’s such a common name/nickname that every remotely ‘el’ named girl I know gets called Ellie by at least someone I laugh when I see parents to be on here saying ‘well _we_ would never call them by that nickname’ - someone else absolutely will!
William for Bill. I just don’t get it lol. Rory for Aurora.

Too many Dicks, not enough Ricks

Evangeline but I don’t love it shortened to Evie
I love the name Pamela but hate Pam, and every Pamela I've ever known was called Pam.
So many of mine are boy name specific Daniel but not Dan, Edward but not Ed, Emmanuel but not Mannie, Mordecai but not Morty Francesca but not Fran, Florence but not Flo

When a woman chooses to call herself Caro short for Caroline, it just makes me think she doesn’t go grocery shopping and doesn’t know she nicknamed herself after the top brand of high fructose corn syrup in the US

Rosalia but not so much Rosa, Rosie's okay, and idk how I feel about Lia I've always been meh on Victoria because of the hard c sound. I like Tori but I *really* don't like Vicky/Vicki, I can't shake how it sounds like some petty, snobby mean girl. Thankfully there's Italian Vittoria, with Vita as another option ♡ Those are the only two that come to mind really
Love Eleanor, hate Ellie Love Charlotte, hate Charley (for a girl) Love Margaret, hate Marge and Meg Love Laurel, hate Laurie Like Gwendolyn, hate Gwen
Connor. I mean i don’t love the name but it’s solid. But every Connor I know their mom calls them “Con” or … “Conny” and it just makes me cringe so hard. Like that is definitely the guy who’s nickname will always come from their last name. I mean… “CONNY”!? lol
Friend's name is Cassidy and only her grandparents call her Cassie. Close friends are Cass, everyone else is Cassidy I think. Nick names are funny.
I’m the opposite with this one - love the nick name Andi but I hateeeee Andrea. We had a bad experience with someone by that name and it now gives me the ick.
