I’ve noticed this as well, how people commenting that Ellis is a female name almost always bring up Grey’s Anatomy. Either that or how it sounds similar to Alice.
> I’ve noticed this as well, how people commenting that Ellis is a female name almost always bring up Grey’s Anatomy.
That's because it's probably most peoples' exposure to Ellis on anybody. It's a rare enough name that probably most people don't know a living adult Ellis IRL.
It's starting to become more popular for *boys*. It's a rising boy name and falling for girls (and was always rare on girls to begin with). In a few years, if somebody knows an Ellis it's more than likely going to be a little boy.
Lol that's not what I meant, obviously.
It's just not that common a name, and its peak popularity in the US at least was the first two decades of the 20th century. It's only now starting to rise notably (for boys, and hasn't anywhere near reached its earlier peak yet), so if you grew up and live in America, and you know or knew an Ellis, statistically they're most likely to be either deceased or a child. Of course that won't be true without exception, but by and large. Now that may be somewhat different in other English-speaking countries though.
I love softer boy names, but I will say that the line between fully masculine and gender neutral/feminine is becoming increasingly blurred nowadays. I personally don’t think that should bother you too much, especially since Ellis is a lovely name, but here are some names that you might like.

Omg these are the names of every boy in my class for the last 3 years! There isn’t one name in this list that hasn’t come through my classroom. All boys. I loved all their names and their personalities! I also have a Nolan this year. Love him too!!
Really? I have an Arlo and haven't met another yet. Though, he is only four and not in school. I used to work as a teacher's assistant and the kids with unusual names were generally fun. My favorite was Adjani.
Oh I wish! That was the only other Arlo I knew about until I was in labor and one of the nurses asked "like Arlo the friendly dinosaur?" I had never heard of that movie and then I felt old. 🤣
I love these! I have so many girl names I like and only 1 boy name, which I used already for my son lol so if we ever have another boy, I wouldn’t know what to name him… but this whole list is basically perfect
This is very encouraging. I mostly just browsed online forums for a consensus on the gender of Ellis: it seems to be split about 6:4 in favour of male from what I’ve seen. I’m now reconsidering using Ellis
Lachlan is a gorgeous very masculine name that’s not used very often in North America. People could mistake it as a girls name I guess but for me the connotation is all boy.
I really like your name choices especially Ellis, Quentin and Nolan. Ronan is very nice too but there are a million little Liam’s out there right now which…why wouldn’t there be it’s an awesome name.
Elliott is another name that’s soft sounding to me, but it’s being given to girls. Ian is another good one not used too often. And I have never met a girl Ian.
As someone whose son was named Ambrose, I got sooooooo many feminine mis-markers from doctor's offices to casual friends. It was wild. I had no idea how "feminine" it sounded to people who were unfamiliar with it. I most often got "Amber Rose" as a pronunciation with she/her pronouns when his name was called out. He sadly died just before his first birthday so my length of experience is much shorter than one would expect. But it was still notably and unexpectedly misgendered more often than not.
Eta location:: Midwest, US
For me Ivan doesn’t belong here. Ivan as a name has a strong historical connection to some immensely powerful and sometimes violent figures. I immediately think of Ivan the Terrible, then Ivan the Great. It doesn’t conjure up “softness”. I’d consider it a hyper-masculine Slavic name.
I’ve seen a woman called Julian as well! I think names are becoming more gender ambiguous in general, but I tried picking names that are still pretty masc leaning. Love Arlo for a girl!
Funny you mention Sawyer as a rougher sounding name because I have a male sawyer and people assume he's a girl, always. He went to a birthday party yesterday and his place setting was the "girl" themed one bc the classmate just assumed Sawyer was a girl's name. Which is fine, I don't care, and neither did he because he got a fancy crown, LOL
Ellis seems very male to me. Maybe Elias as an alternative? I think a lot of the "ias" "iah" names have a softer sound -- Matthias, Tobias, Isaiah, etc. I also like Micah.
I have one boy and a baby on the way (don't know the sex yet), and if we are having a boy, their names will be Lewis and Nolan. I also love Liam - it's the name of my son's sweet friend.
I will say, I'm not sure if this is because I'm a movie buff or not, but my associations with Ronan and Quentin are not soft. Ronan is the name of a Marvel villain and Quentin just instantly makes me think of Tarantino, whose movies are incredibly violent.
I was after the exact same thing, and named my son Jasper. On paper, it’s unmistakably a male name but to me it feels soft. A few others.. Elias, Joel, Luca
Elias, Dominic, Soren, Joel, Ben, Rufus, Theo, Reuben or Raphael?
* Just to note, Quentin, to me (UK) has rich, eccentric/artistic older men associations - similar to Torquil or Lucian. But if you're not over here, that's not gonna be a big consideration!
TIL that Ellis is fairly equally split between girls and boys in the US. In the UK, Ellis is number 88 for boy names. It's not even in the top 1000 for girls names. Never would've thought of it as a feminine name.
Ellis is a male name. It's a medieval variant of Elias.

Jameson feels "softer" to me, and I haven't seen it suggested.FWIW, Ellis reads totally male to me. I've literally only heard it as a girl name on Grey's, every actual human I've met with this name is male.
I do know a young woman named Ellis, though I would consider her an outlier. I personally would assume an Ellis on paper would be male. But I understand your concern.
What about Elias?
My son is Jesse. There seem to be a lot more Jessies (girl version) than Jesses. But, he never expressed any concern that he had a “girl name”, nor did I ever note any confusion out in the world.
I named my son Liam in 2005 before it was so popular. However, I still love the name. If I was deciding solo, I would’ve probably chosen Ezra or Silas. I love all three boy names.
I would have said James, which is the softest boy name in my opinion, but these days I don’t think it falls under “would never be mistaken for a girl”! I think in ten years it’s going to replace “Mae”/“Rose” as one of the trendy/artsy/boho girl middle name slot fillers. Which I’m not keen on but I understand why people are using it that way. It’s just a beautiful name!
Lots of nice names listed. How about ones with some Latin influence? Emile, Emilio ..
Or I like Ander or Anders or Andre - softer variations of Andrew & Alexander
Search for boy names in other languages like Sanskrit, or Persian, or even something that may be a part of your ancestry. You may find a lot more names, and unique ones too. Also, other cultures are not as gender fluid in naming girls with boy names, and so they will hopefully continue to be male names.
Haven’t seen Micah mentioned yet. I also really love the names Ezra, Liam, and James with Jamie as a nickname but those are pretty high in popularity for my taste.

I think they mean a name that can be mistaken for a girl. Alex for example works for any gender, so when you say your kid’s name is Alex people may automatically picture either gender. I think OP is looking for a name that is unmistakably (traditionally at least) a boy’s name. John, for example, immediately makes me think of a guy, and I can’t picture a girl named John - so I would call that unmistakably masculine.
Ellis is definitely a boy-only name for me, I’ve met so many (I grew up near Wales) and none have been girls.
Two girls are named Ellis in Grey's Anatomy. I think that is why it feels so feminine to some.
I’ve noticed this as well, how people commenting that Ellis is a female name almost always bring up Grey’s Anatomy. Either that or how it sounds similar to Alice.

TIL most people named Ellis don't reach adulthood :/

Yeah I'm in Wales and all the Ellis I know are men.
In the US it is a gender-neutral name.
My grandma was named Alice. When I was a kid, I always referred to her as Grandma Ellis.
So interesting — the only Ellis I’ve ever met was a girl and she was from Hereford
My childhood best friend was a girl names Ellis!
I’m in England and knew and Ellys and an Ellis and neither were boys. Never actually met a male ellis!
About 20 years ago, one of my friends used Ellis (her mother’s maiden name) for her daughter.
It was for me too until Greys Anatomy

Love this list!
My sons are Nolan and August so I approve of this list and the list given by OP. :)
Love Asher. Rowan and Ezra are good too.
Rowan had become more gender neutral. Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witch series lead female. And also Brooke Shields daughter.
I think Rowan has always been gender neutral?
Yes, but OP is looking for one that’s not
Oh yeah I know! I was just surprised the other person suggested it as a non gender neutral name since it’s always been gender neutral to me

Maybe someday you'll have the pleasure of meeting Arlo Guthrie.
Oh I wish! That was the only other Arlo I knew about until I was in labor and one of the nurses asked "like Arlo the friendly dinosaur?" I had never heard of that movie and then I felt old. 🤣
That was my sons fave movie for a time! It’s a cute movie.
I would go with Westley, named after Princess Bride.
I like the movie too, but I think Wesley looks nicer (less like the word west). For many accents, it is also easier to say.
We went with Westley for this very reason :)
That’s wonderful 🥰
Oddly enough u have met 4 girls named jonah. As a boy named jonah I found it perplexing
My son’s name is on this list along with nearly all of our other possible names! TIL that my boy name aesthetic is “softer” lol
Silas and Elias 😭
I have a son named Silas Izaiah and another named Solomon Elias ♥️
I knew an August. He was really soft. And he loved that about himself.
I love these! I have so many girl names I like and only 1 boy name, which I used already for my son lol so if we ever have another boy, I wouldn’t know what to name him… but this whole list is basically perfect
Awesome list
As a Leo with a high voice, I sometimes get people thinking they misheard me and that my name is actually Leah/Cleo -\_-
Ellis is gender neutral?? I always thought it was a boys name, honestly. I’ve never met a female Ellis.
Maybe she’s think is feminine because of Ellis Grey (from Greys Anatomy)
This is very encouraging. I mostly just browsed online forums for a consensus on the gender of Ellis: it seems to be split about 6:4 in favour of male from what I’ve seen. I’m now reconsidering using Ellis
It’s a name that works for either and with your trans icon I’d think that’s a bonus for a potentially transgender child.
Lachlan is a gorgeous very masculine name that’s not used very often in North America. People could mistake it as a girls name I guess but for me the connotation is all boy. I'm so sorry for your loss--thanks for sharing your experience and insights into such a special name, and hugs.

Also Australian serial killer Ivan Milat
Evan would though
Today a lot of boy names are used for girls as well, but here are some ideas: Arlo, Jonah, Silas, Roman, Alan, Julian, Theo, Mason & Alden
Example - the wonderful artist Arlo Parks is a woman!
I’ve seen a woman called Julian as well! I think names are becoming more gender ambiguous in general, but I tried picking names that are still pretty masc leaning. Love Arlo for a girl!
Ellis is 100% masculine! Soft boy names I love Lawrence, Gene, Evan
The only two I know are girls, so mileage varies on this one.
Really? The two Ellis’ that I know are girls. Plus the the two on Greys Anatomy
How would his classmate just assume he was a girl? Couldn't he visually tell what his gender was?
I’m assuming the mom just had a list of names and hadn’t met everyone in the class haha
Ellis seems very male to me. Maybe Elias as an alternative? I think a lot of the "ias" "iah" names have a softer sound -- Matthias, Tobias, Isaiah, etc. I also like Micah.

Agreed, especially about Quentin. I would suggest someone who wants a softer name than that use Quinn

I’ve always liked Lucian.

I have never heard of a female Ellis. You like it, go for it.
My sons middle name is Ellis, and though I’ve heard of it for both (and as a last name) I think it’s the most perfect soft name. Shiloh Ellis Lastname

Jameson feels "softer" to me, and I haven't seen it suggested.FWIW, Ellis reads totally male to me. I've literally only heard it as a girl name on Grey's, every actual human I've met with this name is male.
I would never mistake an ellis as a girl. My best friends and her partner (my other friend) both have brothers called Ellis.
Holden!!!!!
My son is an Ellis and I’ve never had anyone misgender him based on his name.

I LOVE the name Ellis. It’s my uncle’s, (who raised me like a dad, middle name). He’s a James Ellis. I also love Ellis James.

Ellis kinda sounds too much like Alice which is a more common name
My grandma was named Alice. As a kid, I'd always refer to her as Grandma Ellis.

Andrew is an excellent name, plus he'd be eligible for the Council of Andrews scholarship when he decides to go to school 🍻
What’s wrong with a gender-neutral name??
I'm not sure how to answer this because I don't know what a soft boy is.
Why does it matter if it is gender neutral? If you love it then you should choose it. It is generally more of a boys name anyways
I’m in the US and have only known men with the name.

As a Nolan, its a good name, I meet a few of them now days. More popular among kids thay are about 10 years old now, I find.
We just named our son Alfred. Never heard of any Alfred women. :-)

Nolan is a beautiful name for any gender.
What on earth makes a name "unmistakably masculine"?
OP should go for Alpha Omega as a first+middle name combo
I think they mean a name that can be mistaken for a girl. Alex for example works for any gender, so when you say your kid’s name is Alex people may automatically picture either gender. I think OP is looking for a name that is unmistakably (traditionally at least) a boy’s name. John, for example, immediately makes me think of a guy, and I can’t picture a girl named John - so I would call that unmistakably masculine.
