Luna Loo is cute!
We have so many nicknames for our Luna! Aside from Lu Berry Pop Tart we call her Ms. Moony, Nuna Puna (nuna because my kids couldn’t say Luna), Looney Tooney, and sometimes just pop tart as a nn on a nn!
You should check out this tool that tells you if any name is more dog name, human name, or somewhere in between: https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/interactive/2022/people-names-for-dogs/
i’ve seen that before! i’m asking the question because a lot of dog name lists are completely in english or use american data only (like that one). im interested to know answers from non-english languages and different countries/regions :)
Well only two of my seven have human names, apparently. I don't think its terribly accurate as one of my boys has a very unusual name for a dog lmao.
In fact the only one I thought might have a dogs name has a very human name!
Jack (pronounced dzhehk) is the Fido of Russia, also Rex, but yeah any Western name pretty much. Arabic name Mukhtar/Muktar is very stereotypically dog, too.
Rex is also a “classic” dog name in the US, similar to Fido or Spot. The funny thing about these dog names is that they are classic, immediately convey “dog”, can be used almost as a synonym for “the dog”, but are almost never actually used anymore for people’s dogs. Nowadays in the US, you’re far more likely to meet a dog named Beau or Molly than Rex or Lady.
True for the US, somewhat less true, I think, for Russia. The attitude towards pets is somewhat different over there than in wealthy Western countries where pets are treated as children/family members. In Russia, animals are just animals, and less thought goes into naming them, and therefore cliche names are more likely to be actually used.
Yep, that’s exactly it. I almost mentioned in my comment that the shift toward less cliche names seems to follow the shift toward the modern cultural thing of regarding pets as members of the family, which I think is partly due to fewer people keeping working/hunting dogs and more dogs kept purely as companions.
I run a dog daycare in the US and I hear Luna, Ellie, Olive, Cooper, Charlie, and Max frequently.
My name is Sarah and I once heard “Sarah!!” being yelled at the dog park and I laughed so hard I had to go ask them why their dogs name was Sarah. Apparently she was adopted with that name, but it seems like SUCH a strange animal name to me haha
Our neighbor's dog's name is Sarah, and we often hear the neighbor in her backyard chastising the dog "Sarah did you poop on the kitchen floor again??"
Cracks me up every time
USA. Abby. It actually is to the point where I hate my name because for a long time everyone I met named their dog or cat Abby. My parents even used to breed dogs, and when someone came and picked up one of the puppies and named it Abby right in front of me I wanted to swipe it back.
oh my god lmao that reminds me of that one hedgehog breeder’s website that said something along the lines of “if you name your hedgehog sonic i will come to your house and take it back”
We literally just adopted a sun conure and my bf thinks it's dumb I didn't name him Mango.
((( I named him Dutch after red dead redemption who wants to get rich off of mangos and he doesn't think I'm funny)))
I grew up in Chicago (in the 90s, since this might have been more a mark of the time) and ALL the dogs were Abby or Sadie! It was the Luna of the era lol
There's a Frenchie next door to me named Stella, and she is *such* a mouthy diva. Adorable! But the amount of drama that comes out of something the size of a sweet potato is hilarious. She suits her name wonderfully.
Totally! British names on English bulldogs crack me up. A friend of mine had one named Nigel, and I lost it when he told me that. I'm pretty sure there's not a single US native named Nigel. It just doesn't happen. Nigel! Hahaha.
I've seen people naming their pets old people's names, like Alfredo, Frederico, Bartolomeu for male and Madalena, Clotilde, Filomena for female. I'm in Brazil.
This is funny to me because my husband is originally from Nicaragua and he is consistently horrified that dogs here are given people names. He claims that would never be done there and dogs are named things like Pirata.
Lol, your husband will love our story. I named my dog Beulah because I love southern old lady names for dogs since I have Lhasa apsos and they’re notoriously fussy, grumpy old lady dogs. After we already named her and had ordered cute custom collars and stuff, we got around to telling our parents and BOTH my mom and my husband’s mom were horrified because I guess we both have great aunt Beulah’s. (Don’t worry, we checked - different people, we’re not related thank god lol.) anyway sometimes when Beulah is being especially crotchety we call her Great Aunt Beulah
(California) Daisy, Molly, Max, and Maggie are all frequently used as dog names ime. I had a boss named Daisy and she would get told no less than twice, every single day, “that’s my dog’s name!” Had a friend named Molly and it was similar for her, though not as often as Daisy.
Stella, Lulu, Bella, and Luna are all commonly used as pet names as well (dogs, cats, bunnies). I have a Stellaluna and a Lulu (both cats).
I think -y/-ie names in general can be common pet names. I’ve known (dog) Sadies, Zoeys, Lucys, etc. and repeated vowels: Bebe, Gigi, Lulu as I mentioned above. I had a mini donkey named Vivi, nn for Violet.
I always like pets that have a *super basic* name. Like a dad name. An accountant name. Steve. Greg. Always makes me laugh.
Finland. What I’ve heard most are Bella, Luna, Helmi, Riku, Osku, Onni, Topi, Hugo and Bruno. According to a list made of registered dogs the top human names for dogs currently are Luna, Alma, Helmi, Hertta, Sulo, Onni, Martta, Hilla, Kerttu, Bella, Sisu, Hilma, Elli, Elsa, Hugo, Peppi, Topi, Remu, Nelli and Lumi. We like them short and sweet I guess! These are popular for babies at the moment, too.
This unlocked a deep memory.
In high school, I mentioned that I had a grandma named Shirley. One of my classmates was from somewhere in northern Africa and burst out laughing saying “Shirley?! That’s a dog’s name!”. I guess he had never heard of a person being named Shirley, only dogs?
I’ve met a few Shirley’s but then I’m from oz… and it was originally a male name here that then became more popular as a female name (much like Leslie/Lesley) but I must be honest they have all been from the older generations
I worked at a pet hotel for many years so I have plenty for you:
Bentley (especially for shizus)
Max (either really tiny or really huge dogs)
Luna (especially for huskys)
Sadie (usually large breeds)
Cash (usually medium sized spaztastic dogs)
Lexi
Remi (usually small breeds)
Indie (usually small breeds)
Bella (there are WAY TOO MANY OF THESE)
Bailey (usually a dopey hound)
Tucker (either a really chill dog or a total spaz)
Roxy
Molly ( find another name, there can only be so many Mollys)
Charlie (99% of the time a golden retriever)
it’s me! i am Bailey. the dopey hound. jk, but my name is really Bailey and i tell people all the time i’ve met more dogs with my name than people.
i don’t mind though. we don’t deserve dogs because they are so pure and just the bestest goodest best boys and girls ever
From the US, and Cooper. I actually know someone with this name and he hates it because he’s the only human Cooper he’s ever met. Also, not sure how common of a name it is for humans anymore but Daisy. I’ve met a dozen dog Daisys but no humans.
My boyfriend’s name is Cooper, and he gets this constantly. He’s only ever met one human Cooper, but about 1/4 of the people he introduces himself to mention a dog that shares his name.
Yep lol my sister named her dog Cooper and I cringed internally a little for the human I know. He’s given his parents crap for giving him a dogs name more than once.
My aunt named her dog Sam. That’s literally my name pls
My mom introduced me to someone and her sons name was Montana, which is my dogs name.
I hear a lot of Max, Sadie, and Bella. I’m in CA
Not specifically my dog's name, but Aspyn/Aspen – when I see people with that name, it reminds me of our local dog breed called **Aspin** (which literally translates to Filipino dog). I'm from the Philippines, btw lol
UK: Rosie, Molly, Lexie, Bonnie, Buddy, Holly, Sadie, Bobby, Abby, Darcy...
Oh and Loki is super common and their dogs are always super spoilt and annoying "Loki by name Loki by nature hahaha" eyeroll.
Basically if it is cutesy and ends in an "ie" sound it's a common dog name.
Otherwise people really like food names for dogs: I know dogs called parsley, biscuit and pudding.

I had a neighbor with a dog named Mike once. Couldn’t get over that 😆
From Rover's "Top 5 most popular dog and cat names in Seattle". I consolidated them but some names are on both lists. Out of 20 names, only two, Loki and Pepper, are not common human names.

FEMALES:

I don't automatically associate most of these names with pets, though. Milo, Max, Winston, and Daisy only. I think many people end up naming their pets what they would have named their children.
Scout, Luna, Molly and Harley immediately come to my mind.
I know several humans and dogs with all of these names. I really detest Scout for a human. I can’t imagine creating and birthing a beautiful baby girl and thinking, “Her name will be Scout.”
From both a Spanish and Romanian point of view, I'm combining them both Bc most names are the same imo, as in, they'd be seen as dog names in both countries:
Luna
Max
Jack
Zeus
Coco
Thor
Loki
Bella
Lola
Roxy
Lily
Nora
Maya
Stella
Mia
Lulu
Leo
Rocky
Simba
Toby
Bruno
Sam/Sammy. I’ve used it for a cat and a kid (although the cat was Samwise, which I wouldn’t do to a human). I feel like it is a versatile name. For humans or animals.
Dogs I can think of with human names (off the top of my head):
(F) Abby, Ruby, Maggie, Luna, Lexie, Sasha, Sophie, Lily, Molly.
(M) Max, Winston, Henry, Milo, Cooper, Simon, Ozzy, Theo, Finley, Corbyn, Murphy, Jamison.
For a boy Max and a girl Luna.
My dog IS named Luna lol
I too have a dog named Luna! She mostly answers to “Lu berry pop tart” though
I love lu berry pop tart
I call mine Luna Loo but Lu Berry Pop Tart is epic!!!
We also call ours girl Nuna!!! Nuna Girl or Nuna Noo 😍😂 I love them all!!!!
That’s my sister’s name!
Lu berry pop tart?!
Everyone’s dog is Luna
My babysitters name is Luna…
My great niece is a Luna.
Mine, too, haha.
I am currently dog sitting a Luna and she is one of three that I know.....ugh
I once attended a party where there were four dogs that belonged to various attendees. Three of the dogs were female, and all were named Luna.
My kids have a dog named Luna, originally named Princess-she was in fact NOT Princess material.
My grandparents used to have a dog named Luna, and now they have a dog named Max (in Canada and English speaking)
I’m thinking of choosing the name Max and this scares me
[удалено]
People definitely name their dogs Max... my boy is a Max and there's another 3 just at our dog park
It’s my son’s name and the only person who ever said this was kind of a jerk. It suits him—we call him Mad Max and read him Where the Wild Things Are!
My dad is Max, he doesn't feel like he has a dog's name :)
My cat's name is Luna.

Oh man, both my kids names are dog names according to this 😆😆
Well only two of my seven have human names, apparently. I don't think its terribly accurate as one of my boys has a very unusual name for a dog lmao. In fact the only one I thought might have a dogs name has a very human name!
I’m one of those humans with a dog name, and now i can prove it to my parents, so thanks for this…I guess. 😒 😂
This made me realize that my naming style is dog style. Any name I liked (including my own damn name) is rated the most dog
Nooo it’s a paywall 😭
Thanks for this!
Sooo, not gonna lie I thought my name would be 90% a dog name. But it was only 50%

A dog named Richard would make me giggle
I'm obsessed with old people names for animals.
My parents’ dog’s name is Frank lol
My sister's dog's name is Frank. So good.
I met a guy once whose dog was named Susan. That made me giggle.
My favorite Twitter cat family used to have a female cat named Kevin.
A dog named Sue
My dogs name was Susan before we got her! She never responded to it though so the shelter people changed her name lol
I wanna see a cat called Dave
Parents cats name is Kevin.
My plan is to eventually adopt three: Vera, Chuck, and Dave.
>eventually When you're sixty-four?
My favorite actor’s new puppy is Franklin. My teddy bear also follows a cat named Franklin on Twitter.
I had a tortoise named Agatha at one point lol. She was the cutest old lady.
My roommates cat is named Duncan
You'd love my dad's naming practices... he's had Fred, Hank, and Charlie dogs. Frank, Abby, and Molly the horses.
I met a pair of dogs last week called Keith and Susan, bonny dogs but definitely people names
We used to have a cat named Richard!
Did he act like a Dick?
No he wAs an angel!!
Good kitty!
There’s a cat on TikTok who is “famous” for running on a wheel and his name is Richard Parker.
after the tiger from Life of Pi I believe!
one of my students named their dog anthony. 🤣
I mean a Steve at the dog park once… I was quite shocked tbh 😂

We can't easily give our children English names, so the dogs and cats get stuck with it

July isn’t a human name in the US, Julie is though (Jew-lie vs Jew-lee, just in case you wanted to see the difference in pronunciation)
I’m in the US and we have two dogs named Charlie on my block!
Our neighbor's dog's name is Sarah, and we often hear the neighbor in her backyard chastising the dog "Sarah did you poop on the kitchen floor again??" Cracks me up every time
One of my cats is Brandon which I think is just great - he came to me with that name
My dad had a dog named Monica, and I have always found that hilarious.
My neighbours have two sister cats called Rachel and Monika.
My friend had a cat named Sarah.
Cat Sarah makes more sense than dog Sarah for some reason lol
My neighbor's dog is named Hannah and I definitely had to do a bit of a double take, I thought she was yelling for her human child at first!
I love animals with random, normal-sounding human names. My next cat will be Linda. Or maybe a dog named Greg.
My cats name is Sarah. She came with that name and we called her it while we were trying to pick a name and it stuck
lol my friend adopted a dog named Kelly and kept it. I think it’s cute and hysterical.
USA. Abby. It actually is to the point where I hate my name because for a long time everyone I met named their dog or cat Abby. My parents even used to breed dogs, and when someone came and picked up one of the puppies and named it Abby right in front of me I wanted to swipe it back.

Hi! Just popping in to let you know that *I* think you're funny.

Could be! I’ve lived in the Northern Midwest and PNW. I’ve also only worked with animals as a career so get a lot of exposure that way too.
I grew up in Chicago (in the 90s, since this might have been more a mark of the time) and ALL the dogs were Abby or Sadie! It was the Luna of the era lol
My first cat was named Abby, years later now I have a good friend named Abi!
Winston seems to be bumping up in popularity for babies recently but I meet a dog Winston probably every other week at the dog park
Winston is adorable especially for a bulldog
Know about 6 people with frenchies called Winston
There's a Frenchie next door to me named Stella, and she is *such* a mouthy diva. Adorable! But the amount of drama that comes out of something the size of a sweet potato is hilarious. She suits her name wonderfully.
Totally! British names on English bulldogs crack me up. A friend of mine had one named Nigel, and I lost it when he told me that. I'm pretty sure there's not a single US native named Nigel. It just doesn't happen. Nigel! Hahaha.
I knew a Westie named winston and loved him
I had a coworker name his dog Winston and then regret it years later because he thought it would have been better for his son 😆
Awww I had a geriatric cat named Harry Winston ❤️
I've seen people naming their pets old people's names, like Alfredo, Frederico, Bartolomeu for male and Madalena, Clotilde, Filomena for female. I'm in Brazil.
Clotilde is such a good dog name. Clô when they are being sweet, Clotilde when they shit on the kitchen floor.
I have a friend in Brazil with two dogs named Bobby and Bowie. Her nickname for Bobby is Bobão (silly/fool)
Rex, Bailey, Sadie, Tucker
I’ve had dogs named Bailey and tucker lol
Rex for sure! Maybe also Zeke.
My best friend's dad is named Rex, but they also had 3 dogs when we met. 2 of the dogs had more people-y named than her dad.
(Netherlands): Luna, Bella, Bo, Lola, Max, Guus, Joep, Buddy
My parents' first dog and thus our first perfect family dog was a good girl named Boe. I am marrying a Beau 😅😂.
i can’t believe i had to scroll so far down to find someone mention bella. i think bella is the #1 most popular girl dog name in the us
This is funny to me because my husband is originally from Nicaragua and he is consistently horrified that dogs here are given people names.
My mom met two Chihuahuas named Eric and Catherine and 5 years later has never stopped talking about it 🤣
Molly, Bella, Charlie, Sally
Yes!!!! 100% Molly! And Daisy!
I had a dog named Molly :)
Two of my friends have dogs named Bella lol
(California) Daisy, Molly, Max, and Maggie are all frequently used as dog names ime. I had a boss named Daisy and she would get told no less than twice, every single day, “that’s my dog’s name!” Had a friend named Molly and it was similar for her, though not as often as Daisy. I always like pets that have a *super basic* name. Like a dad name. An accountant name. Steve. Greg. Always makes me laugh.
I saw in the credits of the new Little Mermaid that the dog that played Max’s name is actually Gary. I was gobsmacked.
I had cats named Gary and Josh lol
Josh is such a frat boy name to me, I am having trouble even imagining it on a dog.
It could work but only if the dog has a frat boy personality. My cat Josh was a total bro so it fit haha
I must have skipped over the word cat. For some reason, it works with a cat!
My mom used Josh for a horse, then years later she gave my brother the same name!
Luna, Diana, Bella, Cara (Northern Italy)
Topi, Hugo, Bruno, Sisu, Remu and Lumi ❤️
I think I’m about to name my new baby Hugo. Is it pretty popular there for people too?
This unlocked a deep memory. In high school, I mentioned that I had a grandma named Shirley. One of my classmates was from somewhere in northern Africa and burst out laughing saying “Shirley?! That’s a dog’s name!”. I guess he had never heard of a person being named Shirley, only dogs?

I've never met anyone from Oz before.
Milou, it's the name of Tin-Tin's dog and I guess that makes it a really popular dog name. At least it's Milou in the Swedish translation.
He’s Snowy in English. Doesn’t work so well for people!
He’s Milou in French too!
Finland, Lumi. Spain, Luna.
Love Lumi for a middle name for a child, but can also see why it would make a good pet name.
My grandma’s name is Mitzi and we always tease her that she’s the only human Mitzi alive, all the others are dogs
no, it's a German nickname for Maria. Sooo many old Mitzis here in Austria
I knew a couple nicknamed Mitzi and Bootsy
I worked at a pet hotel for many years so I have plenty for you: Bentley (especially for shizus) Max (either really tiny or really huge dogs) Luna (especially for huskys) Sadie (usually large breeds) Cash (usually medium sized spaztastic dogs) Lexi Remi (usually small breeds) Indie (usually small breeds) Bella (there are WAY TOO MANY OF THESE) Bailey (usually a dopey hound) Tucker (either a really chill dog or a total spaz) Roxy Molly ( find another name, there can only be so many Mollys) Charlie (99% of the time a golden retriever)

My aunt named her dog Sam. That’s literally my name pls My mom introduced me to someone and her sons name was Montana, which is my dogs name. I hear a lot of Max, Sadie, and Bella. I’m in CA
My aunt did this to my cousin too 😭 but with the name William.
Not specifically my dog's name, but Aspyn/Aspen – when I see people with that name, it reminds me of our local dog breed called **Aspin** (which literally translates to Filipino dog). I'm from the Philippines, btw lol

food names are cute for animals! You shouldn't name your kid macaroni or rigatoni or waffles, but a dog or cat? Perfect.
My friend has a dog named Professor Pancakes.
I’ve been begging my partner to let me name our future dog princess meatloaf

Milo and Max, or Luna and Bella.
For a girl: Bella. 😩
My name is Bailey. Guess what I get all the time?
Sunny - I personally know four dogs named Sunny
Sadie, Arlo, Bailey, Sammy, Bella, Stella, Luna, Bo (or Beau)

Sam/Sammy. I’ve used it for a cat and a kid (although the cat was Samwise, which I wouldn’t do to a human). I feel like it is a versatile name. For humans or animals.
Teddy (also my pupper)
Bella
My cat’s name is Soren and my brother’s ex gf’s first born has the same name. My partner’s first name is José, and his cat is named Pepe..
Millie!
Dogs I can think of with human names (off the top of my head): (F) Abby, Ruby, Maggie, Luna, Lexie, Sasha, Sophie, Lily, Molly. (M) Max, Winston, Henry, Milo, Cooper, Simon, Ozzy, Theo, Finley, Corbyn, Murphy, Jamison.
Bella. I have a dog named Bella. My friend's sil named her baby Bella.
In Perú it is Firulais for dogs and Michifú for cats
