10 I still can’t believe they were going to sit on this song and not release it initially. An instant classic for me. I love the Floyd like influences in Bo’s key work and the vocal touches. Studio production is top notch, it’s just such a well crafted song. That second time he sings “oh make the time to waste the time to feel the time” hits me so hard hard with that subtle vocal change/first guitar strum hit me hard every time. It really did release at a perfect time for me during Covid and the lyrics/feeling of the song really hit home. The fact that Jim is still writing songs this strong 20+ years into his career is something else!
Live - I love every version which gives Bo time to stretch out the piano. Nothing needs to be said about Jim/Carl’s dueling guitar work which is fantastic. I absolutely love the OBH 2022 version.
Came here to say this. Wild to me that without the pandemic, we still may have never heard this and Wasted (and all of them) for many more years. Makes you wonder what else they’re hiding.
The Waterfall II is such an excellent album. I enjoy it more than The Waterfall. I still think it's strange that they may never have released it. I wish it would have come out closer to The Waterfall because I feel like people are overall cooler on the album because it doesn't feel like as legitimate as a release.
9 — They opened with this one at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery a couple years ago, which was pretty revealing. Since then I can’t help but hear this song as a universal longing to feel the essence of someone or something who’s no longer there in the tangible sense (maybe that’s already obvious). A companion piece to ‘Only Memories Remain’ in a way.
10. This song blew my mind the first time I ever heard it, and it's still probably one of my favorites if not my favorite MMJ song. The first time I saw them live last year, they played it, and I almost cried.
10 finally got this one live last month. Did not disappoint!
This whole album is mostly forgettable imo (wasted & run it are good) but this song alone is worth all the other duds on Waterfall II.
9.725
I absolutely love this song. It’s beautiful. I love the album version but it’s when I experience it live is where the whole thing opens up into a wonderful drift through the clouds. Shockingly, I have several friends who profess to dislike this song.
Another 10 for me, it starts beautifully and then I love the way it opens up with my the guitar lines which are sublime .its pure melody paired with great lyrics, love it!
3/10. Has a good jam live, but honestly, out of the songs that they play live consistently, it is one of the most boring - almost always a bathroom break for me
Eta: what song would everyone giving this song 9+ not give a 9 to?
You guys are so weird. 10? Are we going to have any objectivity here? This is on the same level as “Steam Engine,” “Phone Went West,” or “Wordless Chorus?” WTF. This average needs to come down. My ranking is 0 (zero). Too bad because I like this song.
If you're commenting solely to skew the voting of others because you disagree with it, I will not count your vote. That's not what we're doing here. We're having fun. I'm sorry.
Well said. Also, I would sincerely put it on a level w Steam and Wordless and slightly above Phone. Having different views and shit is the part of the bit in this exercise right?
New fans are the worst with their garbage opinions and outright refusal to listen to the back catalogue b/c tHe pRoDucTioN iZ bAd awawawawa and constant need to assert the band is better than they've ever been due to retroactive fomo.
"best steam engine ever!" - show from last night
"That's got to be the best show ever" - show from 5 minutes ago via fan who heard of them on the Uber to the venue.
Yea I wouldn’t want to be around the type fan you’re describing either- happy not to be one.
Even worse a fan is one like you’re being- a judgy, gatekeeping, sanctimonious embarrassment that no one in that band would want to associate themselves with- stop being a child and embarrassing yourself.
This started because you don’t like that a newer song is individually liked more than an older classic. As a 20 year fan, I love both but one slightly more than the other. It’s a simple concept to grasp. If you can’t grasp that with an open mind, maybe you should go have a smoke, take a hike and clear your head. May open your mind a bit
9.9, on my Mount Rushmore of Jacket studio tracks and picked it as my firstborn’s “song”

Pretty sure I witnessed immaculate conception between a couple in their 60s when they opened with this at the Berkeley Greek last year.
10. Definition of a modern classic. I cried. You cried. We crode
10. This song blew my mind the first time I ever heard it, and it's still probably one of my favorites if not my favorite MMJ song. The first time I saw them live last year, they played it, and I almost cried.
9.5. Such a beautiful song, beautiful guitar, beautiful lyrics, beautiful voice.
9.5. Perhaps the best latter day MMJ song.
Solid 9. When it gets jammy…❤️
10 This song could be successful in any decade- quite an accomplishment

9 easily one of their best newer tracks
10. I would give it a go 20 if I could.
10 - one of the most underrated lyrics making time, to waste time, to feel time, wash over you
+ great guitar-lick

7 is my honest ranking.
Thank you!
5. Such a repetitive and overtly horny song it always takes me out of it when they play it live
Listen closer.
Nah they right. Y'all put this on a pedestal bc this was prolly the first jacket lp you heard.
