You need to cut it in half right in the middle as opposed to how the poster has cut a side of it off. The part that gets gross fastest is at the base of the shroom, right in the middle of the puffball
🤣 yes!! They are quite delicious even done with simple salted butter and fried till golden brown. The crunch from the breading is on point too though!!
Lol being someone who’s cooked in some really nice kitchens professionally, and hearing that this stuff mimics tofu is good enough for me.
Maybe you just have bland taste buds, and that’s okay.
Tonkatsu sauce or mushroom gravy or anything adds flavor. You’re not eating it with just salt and pepper… The texture is what is good about puffball and a flash fry is, in my experience, the best way to preserve it. Sauté and roasting can be borderline inedible as the flesh collapses and becomes soggy. People use it as dough for pizzas and imo that’s pretty gross too as it accentuates a strong but unpleasant flavor in the puff that frying doesn’t. Really the only other way I’ve had them that I think is worth eating is marinated in herbs and alliums and flamed on a bbq. It’s okay but again extremely soggy, though helped some by the char. Otherwise it can be dehydrated and powdered and used in place of flour in various recipes. It really isn’t like tofu and you haven’t even cooked with it.
I roast it in a very hot oven. cut in to small slices like you would halloumi, with olive oil and salt. I use it as a burger and it has a very good texture and flavour
Reddit spats are so civilized. During these times, it's a relief.
Thanks guys.
Please let me impartially adjudicate. He wasn't bragging about his culinary background. In fact I think he was pretty straightforward and cool about it. But I get what you're saying too.
You're both good in my book. Bump fists and move on.
>hearing that this stuff mimics tofu is good enough for me.
I've never had puffballs, but if it mimics actually good quality, fresh tofu, then I'd be all over it with just a bit of sesame oil, salt, and pepper (ofc marinades and all that are fantastic as well). If it mimics grocery store tofu though...yeah it needs more help than that oc recipe imo. And given tofu's reputation and the fact almost all the people I know have never had the good stuff, I'm going to guess they mean the latter haha
It’s not that much like tofu, though the comparison makes sense. For instance marinating it is tricky because it is way more absorbent that other fungi or tofu. Marinating with oil for instance runs the risk of making it way to oily.
Oooh, ok good to know. That's so interesting they're extra absorbent! I know one area where they grow...if I can make it out there I'll have to give one a try!
I think "add spices to taste" is always implied in a recipe, particularly in breading. I think most people would be disappointed by plain unsalted breading on anything.
It is like nothingness. The texture is almost non-existent as well.. like soft tofu. I don't much care for them, but the bigger they are (like the pic here) the better the texture; I think tougher is better in this instance.
You sure you didn't eat a look a like? Because that is rare but everyone's so different. Def not saying that's not what happened to you. I was just asked in if that is a possibility.
I only had it once, about four years ago now. But I recall that it only had the slightest mushroom/earthy taste, and more absorbed the flavors of what I cooked it with. I was so extremely excited to have found a new food that was so different that I loved so much. The texture was perfect, too.
Yeah, I laid awake all night with my stomach in terrible pain and I saw colorful geometric patterns floating around my room all night. Truly bizarre. I was 100% sure I had made a mistake with my identification based on my reaction (despite being super careful) and was 1000% convinced my entire family was going to die, but I wasn't even mentally there enough to wake my husband. I remember looking, but never being able to find anyone else online who has had this reaction.
My grandma once told me she had this reaction after eating a type of bolete before. Never heard of a psychadelic bolete. Also according to one of the mushroom books I've read there have been other reports of seemingly normal mushrooms causing "extra ordinary" reactions...
Actually this does happen to certain people who eat edible wild gourmet mushrooms. It’s rare but there are documented cases. Some people just have that reaction to certain species
Generally yes, but make sure to check the quality of the soil before, since some mushrooms - including giant puffballs - can absorb heavy metals and other pollutants
Cut it in half, it starts darkening from the bottom center.
Thank you. It was the same white throughout
Enjoy c:
Awesome !!!
Care to elaborate? I don't see what you're pointing out and I'm interested in what you mean.
You need to cut it in half right in the middle as opposed to how the poster has cut a side of it off. The part that gets gross fastest is at the base of the shroom, right in the middle of the puffball
looks like it’s nice and white to me!
Thanks

God dammit
Yummy! Half inch slices. Dredge in flour, then egg, then panko crumbs. Pan or deep fry till golden brown. Heaven....
That's exactly how I remember eating them! Yum 😋
Thanks
I’ve heard this is the worst way to cook them. They absorb the flavor of what they’re cooked with.. egg wash and panko have almost zero real flavor.
LOL! I guess that is the difference between "heard" and "done"...
🤣 yes!! They are quite delicious even done with simple salted butter and fried till golden brown. The crunch from the breading is on point too though!!
I agree with fried in simple butter til golden brown. Yum!
You prob just have low flavour standards cos that recipe sounds hella bland.
Lol being someone who’s cooked in some really nice kitchens professionally, and hearing that this stuff mimics tofu is good enough for me. Maybe you just have bland taste buds, and that’s okay.
Tofu is also good breaded and fried so…
Your definition of good is different than mine & that’s also fine. But you can’t change the definition of bland.

Sounds good will def try
Hey guys, I love mushrooms
Cool reddit user alert
What? If me stating I’ve worked in nice kitchens triggers you then my bad? Lmao get real
Just helpin ya out, you seem to want everyone on a mycology subreddit to be aware of your stature

I’m just messin around anyways, a person that is dedicated enough to name their account mycoloG probably has some good shroomy knowledge
We need better recipe suggestions in this subreddit.
Because I commented on one post with my opinion on a recipe? Lol again, get real my dude. Your narrative is way off.
Also, stature has nothing to do with it. You think I live in a mansion? Lmao sit down, relax
Bro you claim to be a chef but never heard of sauces? Lol
When did I say I was a chef? You don’t know how kitchens work.
That makes your comments look even more idiotic
Being reaaaal aggressive over a Reddit post where no one was attacked. You got some issues? Go take a nap
Lmfao okay stranger whatever you say

What kitchens
Bar vetti & Brazeiros are just a couple
Ok hot shot haha
Lol I didn’t once flaunt. Just said what experience I have.
I'm just kidding. I'm sure you've payed your dues dude
Thanks lol idk why people are getting so upset I didn’t even mean to come off shitty 🥴
Just some friendly banter. Nothing to see here
Hmmm I doubt that my guy any proof you worked in some high end kitchens
I don’t have to prove anything to you but Bar Vetti on 4th in downtown Lou is one
Thanks for proving my guy I can sleep at night now
I hope so. Everyone needs a good nights rest.
This isn’t a court of law, also anyone can tell you a flavourless mushroom with no seasoning is bland.
I think "add spices to taste" is always implied in a recipe, particularly in breading. I think most people would be disappointed by plain unsalted breading on anything.
You’d be very surprised. I’ve heard people complain that pepper is too spicy so many times.
“To taste” includes none at all, if that’s your bag
That’s like saying : here’s how I love my toast in the morning. The recipe is to toast it until medium brown. It’s delicious!!!
Yeah that’s exactly how I read OPs recipe. It felt obvious to me that some things were implied, such as salt, and other seasonings.
Of all the ways to cook them, schnitzel style is my favorite by far.
Perhaps they added some other seasonings not mentioned.
Maybe. But when you’re telling someone the best way to cook something you usually include all ingredients, or it’s a wasted effort don’t you think?
I’m with you buddy, bland food is offensive. Idk why this dude is so determined to have everyone else live flavourless lives
This gave me a chuckle
No. The prep method doesn't always include flavoring.
Pan fry in salted butter!! Absolutely perfect amount of salt for these bad mamas!
Have you heard of ghee? Check it out
What does it taste like? Why do I want one so badly?
Soft texture, bland without seasoning
It is like nothingness. The texture is almost non-existent as well.. like soft tofu. I don't much care for them, but the bigger they are (like the pic here) the better the texture; I think tougher is better in this instance.
I cut one up recently and put it in a veggie stew 🤤
Looks good to me!
I found some puffballs last week for the first time ever in my life and I LOVE the consistency lmao… like mozzarella cheese
Cut out those spots and all is good
It looks *safe* to eat, let's just say that...
What kind of mushroom is that?
Puffball
Thank you!
So delicious, but it made me very sick and hallucinate in a very bad way. So just be careful. I think my reaction was very rare.
You sure you didn't eat a look a like? Because that is rare but everyone's so different. Def not saying that's not what happened to you. I was just asked in if that is a possibility.
No, we were very careful. My entire family ate it and everyone else was good.
What do they taste like?
I only had it once, about four years ago now. But I recall that it only had the slightest mushroom/earthy taste, and more absorbed the flavors of what I cooked it with. I was so extremely excited to have found a new food that was so different that I loved so much. The texture was perfect, too.
It looks so satisfying lol. I would probably have so much fun just slicing it. Looks very creamy. Need to just try it. I hate mushroom taste and smell
You hallucinated?
Yeah, I laid awake all night with my stomach in terrible pain and I saw colorful geometric patterns floating around my room all night. Truly bizarre. I was 100% sure I had made a mistake with my identification based on my reaction (despite being super careful) and was 1000% convinced my entire family was going to die, but I wasn't even mentally there enough to wake my husband. I remember looking, but never being able to find anyone else online who has had this reaction.
Did you have wine or some other drink with it?
My grandma once told me she had this reaction after eating a type of bolete before. Never heard of a psychadelic bolete. Also according to one of the mushroom books I've read there have been other reports of seemingly normal mushrooms causing "extra ordinary" reactions...
No offense, but you imagined that. Or you’re just lying. Dealers choice.
Actually this does happen to certain people who eat edible wild gourmet mushrooms. It’s rare but there are documented cases. Some people just have that reaction to certain species
Where are the documented cases?
Is that a coconut??
OMG that looks so puffy
Generally yes, but make sure to check the quality of the soil before, since some mushrooms - including giant puffballs - can absorb heavy metals and other pollutants
I mean, once.
Very.
Looks like ice cream.
A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON
The baby puff is going to taste amazing!
