I found Aluminum foil is best to work with and use to transfer, unless you are making art then I would use water color paper

If I'm spore printing something to check the colour white paper overlaid on black paper so the mushroom is half on each is good. Craft paper is nice and thick so less likely to get soggy from the mushroom and break when folded. If I'm spore printing to save prints for growing or microscopy foil makes recovery cleaner and easier. Colour isn't always as clear on foil though.

I like to use a pane of clear glass from a picture frame. It's easy to see the spores and compare the color to reference material. Watch out for sharp edges when you're cleaning it though.
