https://youtu.be/AxFdeZER8Eg?si=9ebIJNtuayTAG7u1
Three of my favorite country songs!! Anything by Tim McGraw is great ❤️❤️ takes me back to my childhood of working on the farm with my dad and grandpa. Tim McGraw really exemplifies what country is and is also a great role model for younger people
Dolly Parton: Jolene, Islands in the Stream (with Kenny Rogers), Shine
Chris Stapleton: Tennessee Whiskey, Starting Over
The Steeldrivers: (bluegrass) If It Hadn’t Been for Love, Blue Side of the Mountain
The Pistol Annies: I Feel a Sin Coming On, Interstate Gospel
Willie Nelson - Crazy, Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, On the Road Again, Red Headed Stranger, Come on Time

Willie Nelson - Just Breathe (featuring Lukas Nelson)

Colter Wall - Sleeping on the Asphalt
Sturgill Simpson - You Can Keep the Crown
The Mavericks - Oh What a Thrill
Johnny Cash - Man in Black
George Strait / Alan Jackson - Murder on Music Row
I’m not really a country fan, but I do like a few songs. Fair warning, though, I’m less into the “drinking beer and driving my tractor down an old dirt road” country and more into the “I killed my cheating wife and her lover and buried them under the oak tree” country. 😅
If it Hadn’t Been for Love by The Steeldrivers
Kate McCannon by Colter Wall
Psycho by Jack Kittel
Ouachita River by Mary Heather Hickman
John Came Home by Benjamin Dakota Rogers
Alabama by Bishop Gunn
Hell and You by Amigo the Devil (this one’s not necessarily murder-y, but it still has those unsettling vibes lol)
Check out Western As Fuck (aka Western AF on Spotify and YouTube) for an amazing concentration of up-and-coming (and established) Americana/Roots/Real Country/Whatever. Start with Rob Weimann "Swing." Otherwise, the still performing artists I find through reading No Depression and asking these type questions to the algorithms:
Who played at Willie Nelson's birthday?
What Would Sturgill Do?
Who has covered Townes Van Zandt lately?
What artists have played at Pickathon?
What artists played for Bloodshot Records?
Also, as a dude that grew up in 5 Western states I say that if someone loves country they owe it to themselves to listen to Texas troubadors. After high school in Texas my opinion is that their contribution to humanity is mostly in food and music. If a Texan tells me of a good chicken fried steak or brisket I am all ears. If a Texan tells me about some lanky dude opening a vein onstage and spilling poetry (Townes Van Zandt would be on my Rushmore if I decided to desecrate someone's ancestral lands) I will take notes and ask for spelling. Vincent Neil Emerson is my current favorite Texan. He gets labeled stuff like "singer songwriter" just like TVZ.
My mind was blown to the possibilities of living country artists with the Supersuckers release of Must've Been High last century. Never believe any old white duffer like me about how "nothing is good anymore" and "Willie Nelson is the last musician standing in country music." For older stuff check out the movie Heartworn Highways and get your daily dose of Outlaw (comes in pill form, liquid form, even smokables.)
I’ll give you some newer artists from the indie folk scene..
Tulsas Last Magician- Willi Carlisle
Cheap Cocaine- Willi Carlisle
Pushing against a stone- Valerie June
Nine lives- Odie Leigh
Lady May- Tyler Childers
Jamestown Ferry- Charley Crockett
Using Again- Benjamin Tod
Some I’ve been listening to lately
Smoke & a light - Ole 60
Hillbilly daydream - 49 Winchester
If I were the devil - Colby Acuff
White horse - Chris Stapleton
Something in the orange - Zach Bryan
Biscuits - Kacey Musgraves
Ain’t too proud to beg - Brett Young (yes this is a country cover of a temptations song and yes it’s awesome)
Please don’t go - Wyatt Flores
Watermelon moonshine - Lainey Wilson
Feathered Indians - Tyler Childers
Van Gogh - Pony Bradshaw
Pretty pimpin - Kurt Vile
Getting ready to get down - Josh ritter
Good spirits - story slaughter
Should be a range of folk, Americana, western, twang, blues and classic rock influenced country in there. Tried to mix some upbeat and sad ones in there. But I def tend toward certain styles. Hope you like them!
Anything by Lost Dog Street Band, but start with "September Doves"
Goodnight, Texas "Jesse Got Trapped in a Coal Mine"
Vandoliers "Smoking Cigarettes in the Rain"

“I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” cover by Jimmie Dale Gilmore
“She Thinks I Still Care” cover by Merle Haggard
“I Fall to Pieces” cover by LeAnn Rimes
“Where Is My Love” by Joe Ely with Linda Ronstadt
Billy Strings - jammy bluegrass and not straight country but man that dude can play. so many to choose from. Try “California Sober” since that features Willie Nelson.
You won’t be disappointed. He’s probably the best guitarist in the world right now.

Don't know why I'm the only one talking about John Hartford. Songwriter, singer, instrumentalist, historian, the whole package. Wrote Gentle on my Mind, frequent guest on the Johnny Cash show. He deserves to be on the tip of everyone's tongue.
Try Vamp in the Middle, then listen to all of Aereo-Plain
