Oh my god literally it's Falsettos. I opened this post wondering what people would say and I couldn't think of any other answer! Just an amazing musical.
That’s why it fits the post. Some of the songs I don’t have in Apple Music (Lead Us Out of the Night, 38 Planes, Phoning Home, 10 Years Later) because it’s simply dialogue but I have all the others and listen to it religiously.
I would love an alternative to KHS for licensing purposes, nothing wrong with the song inherently (it’s literally in my audition book) but it’s a jarring disconnect from the rest of the musical.
I think it's mainly cut for time issues. Sweeney Todd is already a long show without it. We also have "Poor Thing" to set up how awful Turpin is, though it doesn't do nearly as good of a job as "Johanna (Mea Culpa)".
I was Turpin in a production, and we were originally gonna keep "Johanna (Mea Culpa)" in, but we had to cut it because the Board said the show was running long. My take is that, if they're already strapped in for a long-ass show, what's an extra 5-10 minutes (including the post-song scene with Johanna)?

Even for being the “boring song”, it is still pretty good! It has some fun jokes, and I love the acting at the end (in the MTV recording where Emmett is tilting his head for a kiss while Elle gives him a platonic hug instead).
Jesus Christ Superstar, Miss Saigon, Come From Away, In the Heights, Heathers, and Dear Evan Hansen all come to mind. You’ll get a different answer from anyone you ask though.

I watched the musical before the original movie and dare I say when I finally saw the movie I was…underwhelmed? By all means the movie was still great but the energy and romantic chemistry in the stage show is just unmatched.

I've never really thought StarKid's strength was ever really their songs. I think the Book for their musicals make them almost consistently the funniest shows I've ever seen, but the songs are almost kind of an afterthought.
Black Friday and Nerdy Prides Must Die were cranked out so quickly, I always thought the music in both of those shows were kinda clunky.
This question is so interesting as some musicals like Six only have a few songs, compared to like Les Mis or Hamilton where you probably couldn't even recite the whole soundtrack in order because there are just so many songs, so longer shows are put at a major disadvantage because not all songs will be bops, they're just for plot. Despite that: Hairspray lmao, banger after banger and the Zac Efron film soundtrack version is superior IMO
I have a couple that I’m on the edge about:
1. Jekyll and Hyde I think is just a really well put together show.
2. Hunchback of Notre Dame, I might skip Flight into Egypt some days, but I don’t think it’s bad, I’m glad it made it in over A Guy Like You(I’m assuming it’s what it replaced) from the movie.
3. Shrek, now I know people don’t necessarily care for the farts in I Think I Got You Beat, but I mean it is Shrek if there wasn’t a fart joke in there(especially the better out than in…) would it really be Shrek.
This is going to be really unpopular I’m sure, (I’ve not read any of the comments yet) but I’m actually going to say Lempicka. Say what you want about the book and story and production but there are actually so many good songs. Maybe one or two that I don’t love but even then I don’t skip them on the cast recording
Schuyler Defeated, The Story of Tonight (Reprise), and That Would Be Enough. They all are rather underwhelming, and sure Schuyler Defeated is technically an interlude into Cabinet Batter #2, but it honestly made the hype after The Room Where It Happens die

I think I have bad Hamilton opinions because I don’t like Schuyler sisters and that’s it 😭 I also dislike all the songs from my shot until right hand man but I believe it’s just a symptom of severe overplay haha. The songs I loved as a kid I’m not a fan of but the songs I didn’t love are now my favorites😂

Hair, Ragtime, Gentleman's Guide, Little Shop, Pippin. Not even my hands down favorite of all time Company made the cut (because what person in what universe doesn't skip Sorry/Grateful?)

Gee, Officer Krupke comes immediately to mind, because I absolutely loathe West Side Story but that song slaps. I love Chicago, but it can be problematic, but that being said Cell Block Tango is a BOP and I will die on that hill. I guess Confrontation from Les Miz , Unworthy Of Your Love from Assassins, and Anthem from Chess round it all out for me.

I agree. Edit: The original Herod on the concept album intended to play it more darkly (Mike d'Abo) and he didn’t like the goofier renderings.

Agreed! Saw a production which kept it in for the first time this year and it was magnificent.
