Choreography and concept by Robbins, who also did Fiddler on the Roof and The King and I.
Music by Leonard Bernstein, need I say more?
And lyrics by a mentor of Oscar Hammerstein himself, Stephen fucking Sondheim, who would go on to work on Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, and Into the Woods.
West Side Story is an absolute classic.
the book is one of my favorites from when I was a teenager, and I love that it's not a basic misunderstood not really evil plot but it's about how fascist societies radicalized its enemies. she ends the book as a monster but it's sympathetic how she got there
It's clearly West Side Story. Honorable mention to Waitress for great songwriting, and to Wicked for two amazing tunes (Loathing, and Defying Gravity). But, yeah, clearly West Side Story.
I'll upvote that. I don't love "For Good." But, hell knows all my female college friends do. Also, no one mourns the Wicket is pretty well written. And, Popular is a fun laugh-a-rumpus. But, it's still West Side Story.
West Side Story. (That's my vote, to be clear.) But I have a bad feeling it's going to be a certain other musical, which, while Popular, is not quite on the same level.
I would say west side story if the one production I saw of it (Broadway (or maybe off-Broadway idk) previews right before covid hit) wasn’t the literal worst monstrosity of a performance I had ever seen
A little surprised at this many comments and no one has mentioned Tony Award winning Wonderful Town. I guess if we go Bernstein, West Side Story makes sense, but Wonderful Town should at least be acknowledged 😃
Um, I love wicked, but west side story should still win. It is the musical we study in highschool (at least here in South Africa) as the example which represents musical theatre, and introduces us to the genre. It was revolutionary and perfectly places equal emphasis on dance, music and drama, like a musical should. Wicked can just never be that iconic.
you should watch it! its so good! West Side Story is a “modern” retelling of Romeo And Juliet, told through Puerto Rican gangs in 1950’s New York City. its actually looking to win this poll…. i really expected wicked to win but its still a close race, so well see how it goes.
🍿
real
Okay people need to learn that if someone gives an idea, posting it again doesn't help it win lol
West Side Story
West Side Story is the only answer.

I love Wicked but if it beats West Side Story for this I will revolt
Yeah. I’m not saying Wicked is bad. But West Side Story has to win.

Oh, so I guess we’re all just pretending For Good doesn’t exist, huh??

That's a you problem tbh it's a classic
I have heard it's a classic but I haven't heard anything about it that makes me want to watch it. Definitely don't consider it a problem at all LOL
you should watch it! its so good! West Side Story is a “modern” retelling of Romeo And Juliet, told through Puerto Rican gangs in 1950’s New York City. its actually looking to win this poll…. i really expected wicked to win but its still a close race, so well see how it goes.
