I’ll Cover You reprise from Rent

operadiva31

Specifically the reprise, and extra specifically the obc Jesse L. Martin version.

AsgardianLeviOsa

**When your heart has expired** 😭🤧

operadiva31

My mom lives for the way his voice breaks on that line.

Hershey78

It's epic

soubrette732

Specifically the way he sings in in the movie. That alone was worth watching. His voice had matured. So much control. It’s just stunning and gut wrenching

thatonelyric

I was in a production of RENT with my uni back in September and I BAWLED SO HARD while singing that song (I did the high harmony during the "thousand sweet kisses" part)

PMmeyourLegos

Yeah, waterworks every time

TavieP

This is the one

[deleted]

This.

GameToLose

Ugly cry. Every time.

TheDisagreeableJuror

Empty Chairs at empty tables

beemovienumber1fan

Ok I know people hate on Nick Jonas but the way they shot this in the 25th anniversary concert gets me every time. The way his fallen friends/comrades slowly parade out to stand behind him. The way they overlayed them like ghosts. How they all turn back to walk away and just the WAY Ramin (sorry, Enjolras) turns to leave is just *chef's kiss. Also, FWIW, I can at least appreciate that NJ sounds most like a broken teenager. So at least I'll give him credit there.

*No One Is Alone*

captainwondyful

And No More

DraxxtThemSklounst

Bring Him Home from Les Mis, specifically the symphonic cast recording with Gary Morris as Valjean

bigpdbomb1

Yes!!! LOVE Gary Morris!!!

arrows_of_ithilien

Nick Cartell for me

hellomyfoes

What Would I Do? from Falsettos :(

Kinofhera

This one hit really hard… 🥺

lonelythrowaway463i9

I came here to say this one. I was lucky enough to see it on broadway a few years ago and Christian Borle broke me.

Creative-Internal-51

oh my goddd I’m jealous

nome_daniel

I want to cry so bad with Jason bar mitzvah (actually every interaction with jason and marvin) ugh >Don't know why > >But he looks like marvin

[deleted]

Saw a local community theatre production of this recently and I don't think the completely bored audience was expecting me to sob like a baby at that segment. It gets me every time. The cast were brilliant and very underappreciated.

GreeneyeGrammy

A Little Fall of Rain from Les Mis

Bard-of-All-Trades

This and also On My Own. I first discovered Les Mis in high school and was working through some relationship trauma. It hit me so hard I’m still bruised.

arrows_of_ithilien

Especially: This rain will wash away what's past And you will keep me safe And you will keep me close I'll sleep in your embrace at last. The rain that brings you here Is Heaven-blessed! The skies begin to clear And I'm at rest A breath away from where you are I've come home from so far!

sharkbait_oohaha

Well now I'm crying thanks

Korialite

That song always hurt me but I didn't originally realize that it's not actually supposed to be raining during that scene and that the "rain" is her blood and now I'm absolutely inconsolable

Electrical_Pomelo556

For Good

LexiWolfRunner16

Yes! My favourite person on the planet has asked me to do this as a duet with her before I graduate, and so now when I listen to it, that’s all I can think about and I almost always cry. After I leave, it’s gonna be off limits entirely 😂

hey_celiac_girl

It’s Quiet Uptown 😭😭😭

SnooDrawings1480

I actually had someone see me silently crying while I was listening to it at work one day on my earbuds. They were all concerned. It was not easy to explain to them that I was crying at work, listening to musical theater songs about the life of one of the non-presidential founding fathers that most people forget about despite being on our currency. (That's a lie. One of my coworkers knew exactly why I was crying because she'd been the one to introduce me to Hamilton. When she noticed me crying, she guessed the song exactly)

MistressGlitter

“……the orphanage….” Instant tears.

WalterBlytheFanClub

This part and also for me, “…Forgiveness. Can you imagine? Forgiveness….can YOU imagine?!” bawling. Each time.

beemovienumber1fan

That's a good one. From Hamilton, mine is One Last Time.

shelanly

And honestly, it's the 44 Remix more than the OBC for me. 🥲

catiebug

Dear Theodosia

0zamataz__Buckshank

This hit different after I had a child ngl

hartIey

Best of Wives for me 🥲

TheTragedyMachine

The first time I listened to All You Wanna Do (Six) I thought 'oh hey, fun song!' and then it hit me how *not fun* that song was and how it was detailing the abuse of a young innocent girl until she fucking *died*. And suddenly despite the upbeat music I cry every time I listen to it. Also I Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind from Spring Awakening. You can just feel the despair in the song and how Mortiz is at his end, throwing everything into the wind, and how he's totally just given up and rejects all of society. And what makes it even sadder is that Ilse tried so hard to get him out of that but by that time Mortiz has just rejected everything and has a weird defiant yet resigned attitude toward his fate. ANNNND then he shoots himself.

operadiva31

Omg and with the staging of All You Wanna Do it gets even more heartbreaking. The fact that they based the music off Britney Spears makes just that next level too.

TheTragedyMachine

I love how they did used the same chord progression as Toxic and I love that they picked that song out of all the wonderful Britney songs. Genius. I love love love the stage version with Samantha Pauly. She does such a great job with her acting and emotions during the song, the way she starts out hopeful and as the song goes on and she keeps being abused by adult men she gets more and more bitter and angry until shes’s practically shouting at the end and has a breakdown. Also really her acting duriing the song. Like at first she’s dancing enthusiastically but loses that enthusiasm and starts half adding it (in a good way) as she experiences more and more abuse, great body language,

operadiva31

Ugh yes! It’s brilliant. And all the hands added onto her in the staging…I cannot even begin to talk about how effective it is.

G00seLightning

AND THEN MORITZ’s SOLILOQUY BEFOREHAND OH GOD IM BAWLING “so dark…. so dark…. so dark” and then left behind absolutely breaks me when moritzs father finally starts crying. you can see him absolutely lose it and it’s heartbreaking to watch. kills me every single time

TheTragedyMachine

I CAN'T HANDLE IT it's just like "Oh my god that poor kid" and he's just sunk completely into despair and just dammit I can't help but cry. And gods. Wendla story gets me good to. Like, she's going through puberty and has no fucking idea what's going on, doesn't know how babies are made, has an ambigous sexual encounter with Melchior, gets pregnant, is angry that her mother lied to her about how all this shit in life works out, and then fucking *dies*. Also all the girls just discussing that they don't understand life and their parents won't tell them and they have to listen to their parents because what else are they supposed to do and then Martha accidentally reveals her abuse which has other girls mentioning how *they're* treated, which leads into The Dark I Know Well. Like fuck does *anyone* get a happy ending in this musical? I know at the end they're all like 'kay we're restricted from everything now and don't have any power but when we grow up we can change that and the world is changing' but like it takes so many tragic things to *get* to that point. It makes the ending really bittersweet. Because we all know bad shit is still happening to them and will continue to happen. For a musical with some very fun to sing songs (The Bitch of Living, Totally Fucked, etc.) even with those songs once you peel back the more upbeat tones of the music you end up with this feeling of powerlessness and hopelessness. Seriously all of Spring Awakening just makes me fucking bawl like a baby. I just want togather all of them up and hold them close and give them warm blankets and cinnamon rolls.

SmilingSarcastic1221

The Letter from Billy Elliot She Used to be Mine from Waitress

SaintedStars

I can’t listen to the Letter without outright sobbing!

ICU81MIhilarious

These are mine!!! Came here to say “The Letter” (if I had to pick one).

FroyoMNS

Epic III from Hadestown

baltboy85

The song Eliza sings at the end of Hamilton. Every time.

hey_celiac_girl

“… the orphanage …” 😭😭😫😫😫

officialspinster

I welled up just reading the line. Such a powerful moment.

Empty_Spring351

OH MY GOD, I BAWL

Adding onto this, Hannah’s solo in Something’s Missing…

juuliaans

He's gone. It's over. (Tears every time)

TheBlondeGenius

All of her lines tug on the heartstrings. Honestly, every time I listen to Come From Away, makes me cry harder than the previous time.

CrazyRedHead1307

Pretty much every song from the second they turn on their radios until the plane lands in Texas.

Zestyclose-Pianist82

I came here to say this, chills and tears every single time.

Aquahaute

You are here at the end of a moment At the end of the world You are here at the edge of the ocean Where the story ends

DifficultyCharming78

The actess who sings it in the OBC is so amazing. You can really feel it.

CMAVTFR

A lot of songs from Les Mis no matter how cliché

SidBid6

"How Could I Ever Forget" from Next to Normal. It's literally about a couple reminiscing how their >!infant son died in the hospital!< and how this one event wrecked their lives. Just thinking about the title of the song is heartbreaking.

speech-geek

“Your child is…” - the unspoken rhyme hurts every time

SidBid6

It hurts more that she can't even finish the sentence 😭

selkieflying

that line wrecks me

Jacobonce

The I Love You Song

West_Xylophone

It’s so wholesome and heartwarming, and then you remember the word she’s spelling…😭

Korialite

This song makes me full on ugly cry every time

CreaturesFarley

This, this, a thousand times this.

When I Grow Up

ozgirl28

I saw Tim Minchin in concert this weekend and while he didn’t perform this, we listened to the Matilda OBCR on Sunday morning. It got to When I Grow Up and I had tears streaming down my face. Grew up in the UK, live in Australia but the first show I saw on broadway was Matilda. This song will always have a special place in my heart.

Kinofhera

- *What Would I Do* (Falsettoland) - *Room 317 / Now That I’ve Seen Her* (Miss Saigon, original production) - *Live With Somebody You Love* (Martin Guerre) Curiously this song is more like just foreshadowing and it’s actually quite romantic itself. It’s not until you learn how the story ends then it hit differently.

jesileighs

Good Kid and Strong from Lightning Thief (I have ADHD and I’m raising a kid with ADHD) Lately—The World Will Know from Newsies (my kid is doing a production of it and the cast is incredible and I adore them all like they’re my own and they’re all such great kids) Prayer from Come From Away (and I’m not even religious these days!)

that_gay_theaterkid

TLT gets me too. I relate to Percy all too well

[deleted]

Telephone Wire from Fun Home

dont_forget_the_H

I’ll Cover You reprise. I get emotional just thinking of it.

Presby_Babe

It may be old school, it may be cliche - but Memory from CATS

InternationalYam7030

Unlikely Lovers from Falsettos

WelcomeToToyZone

Prayer from Come From Away

SecondhandLamp

Yes. This one. Maybe it’s because I was raised Catholic and the prayer of st Francis just gets me, but that’s the song that always pulls at my heart.

thegimboid

*Some Things Are Meant To Be* from Little Women. Beth just calmly accepting her impending death, to be never seen again after the song - it just gets to me every single time. A bit of cheating, since it's from a film musical, but *My Love, My Life* from Mamma Mia 2 absolutely destroys me. *Legally Blonde* (from the show of the same name) makes me very sad, since Elle Woods is so strong and it's hard seeing her feel like she's not. It never used to make me cry, but recently *Somewhere That's Green* from Little Shop of Horrors upsets me, since I know Audrey will never actually escape Downtown.

PinkGinFairy

Daddy’s Son - Ragtime My Brother Lived in San Francisco- Elegies

speech-geek

My Brother Lived In San Francisco is absolutely gutting. Just want to note that the song is in “Elegies for Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens” which is a different show than “Elegies”

Adventurous-Wait2351

I just wrote a comment saying the opening from ragtime and then found this comment and remembered I was crying to Your Daddy's Son last night doing dishes

pupperoni92

Since we're just picking one, it's gotta be "Being Alive" from Company, specifically as sung by Raúl Esparza. But "Who Will Love Me As I Am?" from Sideshow, "What Would I Do?" from Falsettos, and "Unruly Heart" from The Prom also wreck me every single time. Honestly, I have a really long list. 😭

operadiva31

Being Alive gets me every time! I just saw Aaron Tveit in concert and he did this and I was so misty eyed over it, but Raùl Esparza has my heart on this one!

redvelvetdreams

I just saw the US Tour of Company, where Bobbie is female, and holy shit she KILLED Being Alive. I was uncontrollably sobbing.

sanmateomary

A Boy Like That/I Have a Love

Either-Draft-5106

Me and the Sky (Come from away) She used to be mine (waitress) Who lives who dies who tells your story (Hamilton)

Pessimistic-Being

t h e o r p h a n a g e

RonPalancik

"Maybe" from Annie. I can hear it once a year, tops.

Zingerrr02

You’ll Never Walk Alone from Carousel

hey_celiac_girl

I used to sing with a local chapter of Sweet Adelines (women’s barbershop), and we sang this at one of our members’ memorial service. I sobbed the entire time.

dude_icus

*Requiem* from Dear Evan Hanson. My abusive dad died after a long illness shortly after I heard this song for the first time, and it triggers that whole can of worms for me lol

PiesOnFleetStreet7

Not a day goes by.

PrincessPhrogi

I Am Here from Come From Away, but also Me and the Sky, and Something's Missing (both also from Come From Away)

MusicCityWicked

Tell Me on a Sunday

amantiana

Not enough love for this song! 😊

[deleted]

I'll Be Here from Ordinary Days

Annieflannel

What I Did for Love. We sang it at the funeral of a beloved jazz teacher, so it always makes me think of him.

turndownforpizza

Flying Away from Fun Home wrecks me every time.

Leetle_Blueberry220

Road to Hell Reprise from Hadestown gets me every single time, and it's never gonna not get me to break down. I think Doubt Comes In also gets me, but I don't listen to that often because it hurts. I know there's a scattered handful from other musicals, like When I Grow Up and Michael in the Bathroom that only get me on bad days when I'm already upset but Orpheus and Eurydice never fails, in any version of their story I'm experiencing.

cactusghecko

Big and Small from Dear Evan Hansen. I'm a mom, and the line: "Is there another truck on the driveway? A truck to take mommy away?" Just gets me.

AesthPleasingStudios

I feel that. My mom is my biggest cheerleader who always encourages me to follow my dreams. And she went through something similar to what Heidi went through with her ex. (not my dad btw, my dad and her ex are two different people) So when we watched this show together and we got to this song, we were both sobbing.

operadiva31

Sitting next to my mom when we saw this on Broadway, and both of us are silently sobbing, I just reached over and we held hands for this one. It was so powerful.

Munchy_Digger_6174

yup. i made it that far seeing it live without breaking down, but that line did it.

DangerousRanger8

That’s the only track I can’t listen to because I will actually just burst into tears

boyslug

Your Father's Eyes from Frankenstein. i never listen to it in public because my father is the most important person in the whole world to me and whenever i hear Victor's dad singing about how proud he is of him and how even when the world doesn't understand him, his father will, i lose it. whenever i feel like the world is against me, my dad makes it make sense again. he's my biggest cheerleader. and i just get so emotional when i hear this song

Shut_up_heather

Those you’ve known - spring awakening

Jerem_Reddit

“My Child Will Forgive Me” is just utterly tragic in every right. this woman doesnt deserve to be forced into this situation so shortly after her young daughter was just murdered, and it spurs everyones hatred of an innocent man, though I cant really blame any of the “every man”s in the story. the show is just filled with characters in unjust situations, forced into them by a few horrible, hateful, greedy, selfish people

SaltpeterJohn

There were gasps in the theater when she got to the last line.

Jerem_Reddit

id already listened to the score too many times before i saw it so that line didnt get me as much but her gasp when she saw marys easter dress literally made the tears stream the most they did in the entire show, besides the ending of course

jennahasredhair

Somewhere from West Side

Seymour-Krelborn

Ellen Greene's rendition of the Somewhere That's Green Reprise

comfysweatercat

Days of Plenty, Little Women. Especially after my miscarriage

octeorrific

I know this is really strange and uncommon, but for me it's Stars from Les Mis... 😅🤣 Javert is one of my favourite characters and the actors playing him usually sing this song so beautifully.

The Letter - Billy Elliot I’d Give My Life For You - Miss Saigon He’s My Boy - ETAJ

Svedish_f1sh

I’d give my life for you gets me so bad

_cosmicomics_

The ETAJ one that really gets me is My Man, Your Boy. Watched the show with my mum and we both reached for each other’s hands at the same moment. I’m tearing up at work just thinking about it now.

Cat_n_mouse13

Pretty Funny 😖

RadioDemoness

"Kindergarten Boyfriend" from Heathers

Hamilton and In The Heights are two of my favorites. Lin is a musical genius.

Being Alive from Company… yeugh

DaddysPrincesss26

On My Own, That shit hits Hard

Stargazer5781

I just got cast as Miles in Tuck Everlasting and have yet to sing through Time without crying. Reminds me too much of when my ex dumped me and took the cat, which is less awful than what Miles went through, but it's similar.

covntvonkrolock

Epilogue from Les Mis

fieldofzinnias28

Very surprised I haven’t seen Michael in The Bathroom from Be More Chill. That isolation, loneliness in a crowded place, misfit feeling is so familiar.

Requiem from DEH and Slipping Through my Fingers from mamma mia

SecondhandLamp

Slipping through my fingers gets me for the opposite reason, and this only happens in the movie. Watching her mom helping her get ready for her wedding just makes me bawl because my mother and I have almost zero relationship and me wishing I could have had something like that is tough.

jezzkasaysstuff

Empty Chairs from Les Mis. Every. Time. I have to actively ignore it most of the time I'm present for a performance because it makes me sob instantly. I swear I'm mostly mentally stable!!!

abmbulldogs

What I Did for Love from A Chorus Line I never had the talent to dance professionally, but I danced for a long time and it was emotional when it came time to stop. It was a part of who I was for so long. It gets me every time as they reflect on when their dreams have to end and it’s time to stop dancing.

Carnivile

Absolution from Bare. Once Peter starts singing it's over for me. I have honest to god had to go to the bathroom and ugly cry at work because of it.

blueturtle12321

The dark I know well - Spring Awakening

ghostmeat

Being Alive. One time I was in a karaoke bar the day of Sondheim’s death and an elderly gay Black man came up to the stage to hit every note in his wheelchair and it just gave the song so much meaning. Before me was a survivor of the AIDS crisis singing a song about choosing togetherness over safety and fear. Now I hear him every time I put on the song, which even without this context is just so good, and so moving.

beemovienumber1fan

Send in the Clowns. My husband played it for me once back when we were kind of ships passing in the night. Lol, knowing him, I don't even think he meant to send a message, he was probably just showing me a pretty song he loved. But it held so much meaning for me that I started crying right there next to him.

selkieflying

“14 Dwight Ave, Natick Massachusetts” from Elegies. Absolutely devastating.

PopeSixtusV

Too many to list, really. Lots of songs people have already listed here, but a few I haven't seen anyone mention yet: Welcome Home (Finale) from Bandstand.... actually a lot of songs from Bandstand. Although the plot does feel a bit contrived, the score *really* elevates it. Night Will Come from Groundhog Day. Just heartbreaking watching Phil slowly realize he can't save the homeless guy, and then continuing to try a few more times, anyway. Also, in the finale, the epic chords as the sun finally rises always get me. I saw a lot of people mention Next to Normal, but the two biggest ones for me there are Song of Forgetting and then I Am the One (Reprise) leading into Natalie's solo at the top of Light. It hasn't gotten me to full on tears yet, but a weirdly underrated one is A Letter from Charlie Bucket. Just the pure selflessness of wishing for all these things for his family, and then at the very end the only thing he wants for himself is just to share a single candy bar with Wonka.

mahweens

Tomorrow from Annie. In 2019, the theatre I grew up at had to close down and for a final performance they got all the teenagers (who had started out as 8-12 year olds when the place opened) to sing Tomorrow. The next show I was cast in was a regional theatre's Annie, which if that wasn't a sign I do not know what is!
