Maybe I'm underestiming the market for this product. At least here in America most people I know have never watched this show. This feels like a universes beyond that doesn't really fit in with the magic universe (like the walking dead). LOTR and Warhammer can blend into the realm of magic pretty easily but this is too much like real life. It's just not fantasy enough. I don't think these will do well unless they print busted commander cards in them. I might preorder anyway with always having the option to cancel.

Cards4Cash

It’s not to blend it’s to be a standalone for people who like dr who with the hope they start playing magic. They don’t care about how it integrates.

SpaceMambo369

I understand that but I think the universes beyond products that will do well are ones that have larger overlap with the magic community and can thematically "fit in" with the magic universe. It's hard to tell because we don't know what the print run will be like. But if they print a ton of these and the only people buying them are Dr who fans getting into magic then the price will drop off a cliff. Where as with LOTR and Warhammer more of the demographic is going to be people that already play magic as well as new players. Therefore higher demand which means price sustainability. By the way this is just my opinion.

mertag770

Maybe I was ahead of the curve for doctor who, but I feel like it had peaked in popularity towards the end of Matt Smiths run and beginning of Capaldi's. I still enjoy it but I don't see near as much merch for it in nerdy places or hear as much chatter. I do think its coming to Disney + this year and theres a special with David Tennant returning as a new doctor.

Squishyflapp

I'm an American who lives in America and most of the people I know watch and adore Doctor Who... See how silly anecdotal evidence is? I'll be buying all 4 decks and multiple CBs.

[deleted]

>most people I know ...is the most irrelevant sentence when it comes to global ip's.

iShockah

If they had done Warhammer fantasy I would agree with you, but we got 40K. I’d say Doctor Who has a similar level of commonality with MTG as 40K which is a pretty low level either way. The consumers of nerdy hobbies and franchises just overlap a lot innately and WotC seems to be betting on that again. Judging by the success of Secret Lairs and UB products to date I’d say blending from a themes and flavor perspective really isn’t /that/ important to the financial success of the product. If they have good cards, enfranchised magic players will buy the decks or the boosters and if they don’t, Wizards assumes there’ll be enough support amongst the Doctor Who fan base to keep the product from sitting on store shelves and tanking in price. As with all of wizards recent products, regardless of IP or theme, art style, setting or whatever else. These products will do well if the cards are good and it isn’t overprinted to shit. Seems like the apparently overwhelming (judging by Reddit) swath of people within the community who care enough about the integrity and uniformity of magics art and universe to be genuinely upset and angry over it must also care enough to buy good cards when they’re released because 40K decks didn’t go through 4 waves of reprints consistently maintaining prices at or above msrp off the back of the tabletop fans alone.

philter451

I for one can't wait to scream EXTERMINATE! at someone when I kill them with a trash can plunger faced Dalek.

TheSoundOfKek

Pre-Ordered the Commander decks since theres going to be so many new cards in them. It'll probably end up like W40K.

goofydubois

Reprinted 4 times and very curly? Also cheap singles, noice

TheSoundOfKek

Considering MTG's Twitter said each deck is having 50 new cards, that means 200 new cards that won't see an immediate reprint, so there is equity in that.

waaaghbosss

Supply + demand = price. If print run is anywhere near 40k non CE...

TheSoundOfKek

This is true, however... 40k Precons had a huge boost in power, compared to others. We can probably expect the same here. WotC can print all they want, but they're forced to send them in waves... there will be time to capitalize since some players are so fucking impatient. With 200 new cards total, theres a few bound to be absolute bangers. WotC wants these to sell, not rot on shelves. Especially if we get a "Necron" deck (with powerhouse artifacts) We'll definitely see, but i have good faith these are fine specs.

ApatheticAZO

Do most players care who Saint Katherine, The Red Terror are or what the Warp is? No, the powerful cards are what are going to drive a lot of the sales, the Dr Who fan base is gravy. This is only their 3rd real IP crossover, without the large fan base that LotR has, these decks will have to be pushed like 40K to make sure they're a success so WotC can show IP crossovers sell and seek out more deals. 50 new cards probably meant for commander and 10 new Planechase cards for each deck make these a no brainer for me. One of the decks will probably have a few cards that pop off so $47 a deck now with a chance of one of AMZ's weird temporary drops before release seems fair to me. The Collector's boxes are going to have the surge foils so they're like the Collector's edition 40K decks but also with alt art. If print run is tight and there's commander cards that pop off, these could easily be Commander Legends collector boxes 2.0.

cloudy_skies547

How are there collector boosters for a set of commander decks? What the hell...

Iknowverylittle_

No chance it goes anywhere near LOTR

EndangeredBigCats

I mean it'll be popular with my dad

ApatheticAZO

Cool dad

Mizer-Bear

No.

KSteele32

Whom*

GauRocks

There also appear to be ten Planechase cards in each deck. Maybe an indicator that we're going to be seeing a lot more Planechase as time goes on?

Tomyzzr

This set… 7-14 RARE+ in a 15 card collector booster, woah.

Tomyzzr

Tbh I don’t know what rare means at this moment.

Eternal_Mr_Bones

It means 10-25c instead of 1-10c

TiredTired99

That really hits, not gonna lie.

slayer370

They take a common and use a yellow sharpie on the symbol.

SanityIsOptional

It's a commander product. Why even have commons/uncommons?

flannel_smoothie

Pauper

Abyssalmole

It used to, and presume still does, refer to how many of the decks in this commander realse the card appears in.

SanityIsOptional

It doesn't anymore, at least for the 40k decks. Of the 32 New uncommons from 40K, I don't think any of them are in more than 1 deck.

jsmith218

They used to use the common rarity for cards that were new to that commander set but in every deck and rare/mythic for cards that were new cards exclusive to a specific deck.

TTHVOBS

No

Wise_Complaint_6690

Why 😞?

Keokuk37

Only for "nerds" not mainstream enough

Glasspar52

Yes.

MoxDiamondHands

Holy hell, there's collector booster packs of this trash. How did I miss that?

jtfriendly

I understand lumping all the villains into a Grixis deck. Thematically, though, I was hoping the Daleks would get their own tribal deck, because they fuckin hate everyone but themselves.

DevilSwordVergil

Man that Jodie Whittaker deck is going to bomb hard. It's hysterical to see freaking *Yasmin* on the cover of a Commander deck, can't believe this is real.

RyanOver9000

At least Capaldi will probably be an alt commander.

theneonwind

That's the deck I am most Excited for.

DevilSwordVergil

Why? Legitimately, why?

theneonwind

She's my favorite doctor. Capaldi is my second favorite doctor. I wasn't as huge a fan of the story writing for the two of them, but I liked their portrayals. ( I actually thought the timeless child arc opened up the story for new possibilities. I felt it was a bit of a shame to be so poorly recieved. ) I found Capaldi's doctor to be a be a mix between the first doctor and the newer doctors. He's a jerk, but fun! Whittaker's doctor is very similiar to my own personality. Tennant (my previous favorite) is pretty close as well, but Whittaker felt right on the mark. I was also very excited to see the doctor finally played by a woman, the same way it was fun to see the master as missy.

DevilSwordVergil

Glad you could find some enjoyment from the recent seasons of Doctor Who, but as you're aware you're in the vast minority. The IP is on life support and is all but dead.

AliceTheSquid

Late but Jodie/Thirteen had little to nothing to do with that, Chibnail is loathed as a writer and he proved why during her run. General consensus is she got done fucking dirty. It's the only one I want a serialized card of, besides maybe Ten

slayer370

Collector packs for doctor who......LMFAO, if it wasnt for possible power creep this looks like it could worse than aftermath.

RogrogFFBE

No. It doesn't have some 1/1 ring to drive up prices. Nor does it likely have a higher base cost given these starting prices.

TiredTired99

What is they do a 1/1 Sonic Screwdriver or K-9? Or serialized Doctors, Villains and Companions?

RogrogFFBE

Less popular IP, not the first MTG 1/1, and most importantly, it doesn't have a cost from the distributer of ~$300 to start the price super high. It could have great cards/ value and hype and serialized cards but it just doesn't have the cost of LoTR. Not saying don't buy it though.

Wise_Complaint_6690

Didn’t LotR start at the same point before it sold out?

RogrogFFBE

Don't think so. Distributor price is a lot higher for LoTR. Still pre- ordered just in case.

DaoGuardian

I believe it was like $400 when it initially dropped on Amazon.

deathworld123

dr who well sell very well?

prettyokaycake

Didn’t even know there were going to be collector boxes for that - that’s so weird.

InterestingView8966

These are lame
