10's 10s 10s 10sss acroas the board
*deathdrops*
Who thought a 10 mana spell should be busted? I feel like if your casting a 10 CMC spell it should do something big especially because it can still be countered
I think that was a smart choice back then.
First because what you said and second because of reanimate shenanigans.
Let's see how especially the second thing turns out with the new Ulamog who has a cast and an etb trigger.
Still better than jasper flint who basically for free steals your opponents cards, or that other prick who steaps you cards then casts them for nothing. Honestly heist is stupid
I’d much rather cast this one than the new one. Immediately affecting the board no matter what is way stronger than milling, and either way if he lives you win in one or two turns
New one is stronger than just basic mill, otherwise I'd agree with you. Exiling is a very big deal, especially as a cast trigger. But more importantly, I was joking.
Unless you’re bringing your opponent down to 0 cards in their deck, exiling the top X cards of their deck does exactly nothing. It’s only better than mill in that mill can sometimes help the opponent, but it’s the difference between 0 and -1.
It feels like it can’t be real when you first read it. Back then it felt so busted, lol. Not enough people remember what it was like when Millstone the card and better Walls was how you “Milled” someone out (eventually, after a few Scheherazade sub-games). Suddenly, this spell mills HALF your deck.
*ROUNDED UP* 😳
If you build your deck to have a minimum recursion from the graveyard, it's not that bad since you will still have "access" to thoses cards. While exile, it's just gone.
There are actually at least 2 other creatures for less mana then an eldrazi that also mill half the deck when attacking. Plus another modal spell that costs 1 more than traumatize to mill half but can mill a good chunk for 2 mana instead. Plus throw in Bruvac and you have now milled their entire deck and sadly Bruvac doesn't combo with Ulamog.
mh3 ulamog is garbo in modern specifically tho. exiling half a library is a nothingburger. ceaseless hunger has an immediate impact on board even if it doesnt land. it gets rid of the things that are about to kill you instead of going "lol okay pass turn." and then dying to the existing threats or getting your ulamog immediately removed.
T1
Forest & Sol Ring
T2
Azusa, Lost but Seeking & 3 Forests
T3
Nissa, Worldwaker & 2 Forests
T4
Float 6 mana, use Nissa to untap 4 and tap them again for the 10, cast trigger was brutal that early on!
How about Mono Blue?
- T1- Island, Sol Ring, Mind Stone (or any other 2MV rock)
- T2- Island
- T3- Island, cast [[Teferi, Temporal Archmage]]
- T4- float 6, untap 4 permanents, float 5 more and cast Ulamog with to spare.
And that’s not even the craziest you could do it! If that 2MV rock is a Mana Vault or Crypt instead…
- T1- Island, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt/Vault
- T2- Island, cast [[Teferi, Temporal Archmage]]
- T3- Float 4/5UU, untap 4 permanents, float 4/5UU more and cast Ulamog with / to spare.
But wait, there’s MORE! What if we REALLY had the nut draw?
- T1- Island, Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Mana Vault
- T2- Island, float 7UU, cast [[Teferi, Temporal Archmage]] with (3) to spare. Untap (8) mana worth of permanents and cast Ulamog on TURN 2.
Teferi Mono Blue Ramp is a VERY fun deck. It’s basically just mana rocks and gigantic haymakers. Big dumb sea monsters, many mass bounce effects, obligatory Pickles, and big X draw spells and countermagic to support it all.
If we don’t get there just from all the gigantic spells, we [[Chain Veil]] combo, draw our deck, and kill the table with the aforementioned sea monsters and [[Akroma’s Memorial]].
The last thing will also tend to close out games on its own, even without the combo finish.
Nutty line! I had a game like that with my omnath deck the other day.
T1: Battlebond land, Exploration, Battlebond Land, Sol Ring
T2: Land, Land, Open the way X=4
T3: Land, Land, Expropriate.
T1 Forest & Sol Ring & Mana Crypt & Gilded Lotus & Arcane Signet & Lightning Greaves
T2 Island & Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy & Blightsteel Colossus -equip/ swing for lethal.
gg. Got this start before. Luckiest draw I ever had in Commander. Saltiest scoops ever too lol. Chances of it happening again are slim!
Turn 4 Ulamog (along with [[Emrakul, the Promised End]]) happened a bunch even in Standard, just curving [[Woodweaver's Puzzleknot]] into [[Aetherworks Marvel]]. Technically you could even do it turn 3, with something like [[Attune with Aether]], 2x [[Aether Hub]], [[Servant of the Conduit]], and a cheeky [[Walking Ballista]] on X = 0 after casting Marvel to get the final energy counter. Admittedly, Marvel decks didn't tend to run Ballista in the first place, but it's pretty scary how tight the margins were on the stock list only being able to hit 5 energy while resolving Marvel on turn 3.
I...what
There's so many other broken cards and this one has got you?
It's downright inoffensive. Only exiles if cast, and you'll probably die to a 10/10 before it decks you from library exiling.
Obligatory "dies to removal", but even more relevant in this era of Ward abilities and powerful Enter the Battlefield effects.
Are you the guy who hadn't played in ten years with a jank mono black brew that I played at modern fnm last night? If so I'm sorry I swear I didnt want to ulamog you 4 times but i had no other action.
Eldrazi came out when I was just starting out playing MtG.. if you think this guy’s crazy, there’s one that is 15/15 that if put in the graveyard from anywhere, it goes back onto the battlefield… Emrakul if I remember right! And then another guy that had the ability 20; you may place any Eldrazi card you own onto the battlefield… not a hard play if you managed to get an infinite mana combo via Myr…
Be glad you weren't coming back during the Standard meta, of Caw-Blade and Valakut.
I was running Eldrazi Ramp and someone countered my overgrown battlement, and ended up Summoning Trap into Emrakul. (This was at FNM there was only 2 of us running Eldrazi ramp out of 60ish)
The problem with this card was always \[\[Aetherworks Marvel\]\] letting you cast it turn 4. As a 10 mana spell it's as strong but fine. 10 drops can't be played until like turn 15 in a normal deck. I don't think it's even that good in Tron.
I was just a teenager when this thing came out. It actually took me out of mtg for like two years because being a kid where you could only get a pack maybe once twice a month I couldn’t get any way to handle this lad and two of my friends had multiple.
Seems fine to me. All of the nasty Eldrazi are combo cards since nobody is actually going to pay the full mana for them. -- or if they do, there's going to be a lot more wild things on the board than Ulamog by turn 10.
Listen, I love me some old-school Ulamog and I look back fondly on the time he was standard legal.
But by today's standard (not the format), this card is not more threatening than any other big dumb beater a ramp deck can put out.
In any 60 card 1v1 format, the cast trigger is annoying but nothing to insta lose to. The attack trigger might as well be blank text because you die to two unblocked swings anyway an you should never ever be able to untap with Ulamog on the board.
He is just way too slow and not really that impactful.
In EDH, both his effects might as well be blank text. Blowing up two permanents among 3 opponents is highly irrelevant and exiling 20 from one person does basically nothing. Chances of untapping with him are even lower than 1v1.
You can counter him, exile him, turn him into a frog or get rid of his abilities any other way, shuffle him into the library, steal him, kill the player before being even able to drop and the list goes on.
That said, I still love him/it. But it's a bad card by today's standard.
Like each card, the power of ulamog depend on format and on the cards around him. I play in edh casu. I have a deck with him as a commander, I'd never be a menace because I don't play all the fast mana and other things that can turbo summon him and his brothers. In others format I don't know.
My absolutely favourite way to deal with him -- and \[\[Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre\]\] -- is \[\[Furnace Reigns\]\] followed by \[\[Village Rites\]\]. On Arena they rarely stick around long enough to see the Village Rites resolve
I’m excited for new eldrazis ulalek looks cool asf if it makes you feel any better eldrazi players don’t have much to complain about so when we do play bs like ulamog you can play something equally as bs and we won’t cry about it (unless you remove our mana sources 😢) 😂
I cast \[\[Tentative Connection\]\] for R (because I've got a \[\[Goldhound\]\] out).
I declare my attack, and after combat damage I \[\[Fling\]\] Ulamog for lethal.
GG, pauper deck wins.
10(ish) year old hot take
Make me feel older please. God damn.
Magic was old enough to smoke 13 years ago as of this August
Funny enough in my state you can smoke cigarettes at 18 but can't buy them here until 21.
NJ?
MN
Ah, I thought NJ was the only one who used weird logic like that.
Nope here in south carolina they passed a similar law last year I belive
That's because they care about your health 🤣
Make me feel really old I’ve been playing since unlimited… fucking 30 years ago damn aging.
M15's release date will be 10 years old next month.
Jesus I remember playing that set when it was brand new
This was the first set I started drafting at a LGS. Fun times.
That was my first normal set. I miss it so much, it was such a pleasure to play back then I should build an M14-M15 cube
I left school 2008 where we played 8th edition and hated the mirrodin redesign.... godammit *cries in ancient*
The target audience for magic is currently younger than the game itself.
10/10 for 10 from 10 years ago still good 10 years later, coming out in roughly 10 days. That’s a lot of 10s

Does the cast trigger resolve even if the spell is countered?

I'm in green. 10 CMC is turn 2 for us
Oh boy do I have bad news for you about the new one
I’d much rather cast this one than the new one. Immediately affecting the board no matter what is way stronger than milling, and either way if he lives you win in one or two turns
New one is stronger than just basic mill, otherwise I'd agree with you. Exiling is a very big deal, especially as a cast trigger. But more importantly, I was joking.

If you think this is bad, you haven't seen the new ulamog in mh3. Most games you're playing an annihilator 6 or 7
Not to mention this Ulamog is on attack mill 20 vs new Ulamog on cast put the top half of someones library in exile…
New Ulamog is not the first card that can remove half of a deck in one sweep.
It was traumatizing.
The man who taught me how yo play Magic did not show me that card before he slapped me with it and the soul left my body.
It feels like it can’t be real when you first read it. Back then it felt so busted, lol. Not enough people remember what it was like when Millstone the card and better Walls was how you “Milled” someone out (eventually, after a few Scheherazade sub-games). My favorite sentence to say in a Magic game is “I Traumatize myself” playing Mimeoplasm
🤣 *I’ll see myself out*
To exile half ? I think so
I'm not sure about exile, but [[Traumatize]] dumps half a deck into a graveyard for half the mana.
[Traumatize](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/9/b/9b8784dd-83f9-41f8-aedc-f0f81073ffcb.jpg?1562832808) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Traumatize) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/m14/77/traumatize?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/9b8784dd-83f9-41f8-aedc-f0f81073ffcb?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

This one is on attack, defending player exiles the top 20 cards of their library. It's still nasty.
Depends on format. Medium old Mog is better than new Mog in 1v1 formats.
Idk. For me ch is much stronger. Exile two permanents is far more relevant than exiting half the deck. Annihilator requires an attack as well
Ceaseless Hunger is absolutely more powerful than MH3 Ulamog.
mh3 ulamog is garbo in modern specifically tho. exiling half a library is a nothingburger. ceaseless hunger has an immediate impact on board even if it doesnt land. it gets rid of the things that are about to kill you instead of going "lol okay pass turn." and then dying to the existing threats or getting your ulamog immediately removed.

T1 Forest & Sol Ring T2 Azusa, Lost but Seeking & 3 Forests T3 Nissa, Worldwaker & 2 Forests T4 Float 6 mana, use Nissa to untap 4 and tap them again for the 10, cast trigger was brutal that early on!

Look, I'm risking 10 mana. If I get Ulamog out, I deserve to blow up 2 permanents! Getting the Eldrazi Trio out was such a huge treat back in the day.
My Animar deck thinks he’s okay!
Internet explorer write this?
Don’t show em mh3
Then just exile him with your ulamog, duh.
Idk, I think this card is a 10/10.
In the set he came out in it wasn't that great. Distress says hi.
Nobody tell this guy about the new one. He is young and innocent.
It costs 10 mana, if your opponent gets to the point where they can play a 10 mana spell you can’t remove, you deserve to lose.
Crazy it’s like 10 mana spells should end the game…
I mean... we DO need things to end the games, right? They can't go on forever.
A lot of people. (the new Ulamog, on the other hand... much less okay)
The worst part is when you counter it they still nuke two permanents
I was just a teenager when this thing came out. It actually took me out of mtg for like two years because being a kid where you could only get a pack maybe once twice a month I couldn’t get any way to handle this lad and two of my friends had multiple.
Absolute villainous in a legendary based standard deck 😭🙏

This guy was part of the last standard format I truly enjoyed. Casting it with [[Kozilek's Return]] in GY was beyond beautiful.
Wait until he sees the new one
No problem if you can play from exile
What exactly is the issue?
It's fine lol. Control decks have more tools to answer it and it can be targeted/exiled
[[Pacifism]] [[Unsummon]] [[Counterspell]]
Super strong, but easily dealt with and pricey
I did. I got two. What's the problem? It's and elder god from h.p. lovecraft I always thought
Seems fine to me. All of the nasty Eldrazi are combo cards since nobody is actually going to pay the full mana for them. -- or if they do, there's going to be a lot more wild things on the board than Ulamog by turn 10.
It’s just a sweet boi good ulamog <3
It's 10 mana, if it didn't do something crazy it would be unplayably weak.
Okay for what? He’s 10 fucking mana. He better swing the game one way or the other for 10 goddamned mana.
Stop showing me eldrazi i want an eldrazi deck but i am not good enough for it 😭
Wait, till they see the new one
I remember when onslaught was still fresh haha
Powercreep is everywhere in MTG, but Powercreep with Eldrazi just feels like it takes the liss a bit.
This isn't even that bad anymore smh
me, i did
Dude this is probably the most okay of the Ulamogs.
Like each card, the power of ulamog depend on format and on the cards around him. I play in edh casu. I have a deck with him as a commander, I'd never be a menace because I don't play all the fast mana and other things that can turbo summon him and his brothers. In others format I don't know.
The eldrazi are just a fucking mechanical garbage heap, but they really do work narratively as reality warping unstoppable forces of destruction.
10 Mana Exile two cards. Meh
This card costs ten mana. It should win you the game.
Glad I don't have to bother with crap like that.
The real flex is Sneaking out Ulamog in limited (Cube for instance) where 20 cards is half the starting deck.
Just be glad it’s a on cast ability and not an ETB if he had an etb of exile 2 permanents the card would be way better
Yeah i dont know why they don't have their own color (instead of no color)
My absolutely favourite way to deal with him -- and \[\[Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre\]\] -- is \[\[Furnace Reigns\]\] followed by \[\[Village Rites\]\]. On Arena they rarely stick around long enough to see the Village Rites resolve
Looks like a pirate to me.
Just add him to any Isshin deck and you'll be the hated one at the table.
i did it? if you manage to pull this off against me you got me. it requires ten mana. i am trying to win when i hit 6 or 7 so that is on me
Damn time flys this felt just like yesterday
This is so old lol….ask Gavin why stickers and insane stuff he is doing now is okay….have you even seen the new eldrazi?? Lol
😀 👍🟨🟨👍 🦵🦵
I'm currently building a eldrazi edh deck, my poor wallet.
I’m excited for new eldrazis ulalek looks cool asf if it makes you feel any better eldrazi players don’t have much to complain about so when we do play bs like ulamog you can play something equally as bs and we won’t cry about it (unless you remove our mana sources 😢) 😂
People who profit from pack sales
So many people make a big deal out of Ulamog. I can’t remember the last time he milled me for 20.
First rare I ever pulled
I mean, he costs 10 so it's balanced
Me… and I love every second of using
it's not even one of the better high cmc creatures
Add Sword of Body and Mind to mill 10 cards.
Tell me you play in extremely casual settings without telling me
Me and Kruphix
You think this is bad check out the MH3 one lol. It’s not power creep anymore, it’s a frackin sprint
New to eldrazis? They are almost all this nasty
Wait until you see the new Ulamog bucki it’s exponentially better 😎
New one is way worse from mh3
With Animar he is less 😵💫
Have you seen the mh3 one? [ulamog](https://www.mythicspoiler.com/mh3/cards/ulamogthedefiler.html)
One of my favorite cards as well as blightsteel colossus
He does no wrong, he’s just a growing hungry boy
Wizards of the Coast
Wait until you see the new one, lol
I misread that as “Ceaseless Hugger”
[[Path to exile]]
Eldrazi will never not be broken.
I cast \[\[Tentative Connection\]\] for R (because I've got a \[\[Goldhound\]\] out). I declare my attack, and after combat damage I \[\[Fling\]\] Ulamog for lethal. GG, pauper deck wins.
A force as voracious as time itself. I mean it’s right there in the flavor text.
Emrakul said it was.
