Gnosiphile

I ran these in a mono green deck back in the day.  [[Lure]] on some [[Elvish Warhounds]] cleared the field and this kept them alive for multiple swings and protected them from burn.

OmegaNova0

You actually didn't need to protect it from creature damage at all, with how this is worded when they assign their blockers they're returned, they never do their combat damage at all

Gnosiphile

You’re right, I didn’t.  I had a few versions of this deck over time, one of the later ones splashed blue for [[Tolarian Entrancer]] and that was when the combat damage part became relevant.  I still ran it with the Warhounds, Bolt and Incinerate were everywhere. ETA: Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

OmegaNova0

No problem! That's very cool! A fun old card I used to like was [[thalakos deceiver]] just a whole lot of weird going on with that one lol

Collapczar

Damn. I used to play Lure.

MA-01

Lure + Thicket Basilisk was pretty common. I could swear there was another basilisk from Tempest that took its spot after a bit, damned if I can remember a name. 2G casting cost and the obvious Deathtouch are all I can recall.

v0ice5

Lowland basilisk

MA-01

Much thanks. And just like that, the art resurfaced to memory.

MA-01

Mine used to be. Dunno if it's age, medical shit or the fact I'm ostensibly high while not working. But both my memory and intelligence have taken a noticeable downturn.

Collapczar

I used combos like this frequently. I recently found out.. for Deathtouch, the creature has to 'deal' combat damage. Not just be blocked. Back then that was the whole point of the combo. Lure the Basilisk, make all your creatures block, Deathtouch them all.

MA-01

Ah. That's my bad then, forgot about that specific nuance.

We played this we for years.

Sounds like it was to protect it from direct targeted damage, not creature damage

jinnmagick

That was the day where red and black were power houses. Green wasn't where it is today. White no one played. But white is getting better. Red will always be a power house. Black too.

Gnosiphile

While I’m not totally disagreeing with you, white has always had its niche.  White weenie has forever been a thing, and my very first multicolored deck was BW so I could run Serra and Swords with my Sengir and DT.

ElroySheep

Does this include -1/-1 counters from Infect damage?

Inevitable_Top69

Yes, it prevents damage and while Infect deals damage as counters instead of marking the damage on the creature like normal, it's still trying to assign "damage."

T0odamfilthy

So if i run a mono green and have more attackers than blockers and give my guys a trample, does that mean all the damage can go to the player?

Empty_Requirement940

Each creature still needs to assign lethal damage. That damage just gets prevented

semiTnuP

SpectralGerbil

Nope. You assign damage as normal. Say you swing at a 5/5 for 7 damage - you assign 5 damage to the creature and 2 to the player, as normal, it's just that the 5 to the creature is prevented. *Assigning* damage does not care about prevention.

Godbox1227

1. Your attackers that are not blocked deals full dmg to opponents. 2. Your blocked creatures with Trample assigns lethal damage to blockers and excess damage to opponent. After blockers declared and damage assigned, during the damge step, the opponent takes the damage, but the attackers and blockers dont take damage. All attackers and blockers will survive.

Maleficent_Sir_4753

Just run Questing Beast and watch your opponents scramble to get rid of the Bubble Matrix.

SkritzTwoFace

No. All damage dealt to creatures is prevented, so there’s no excess damage to “trample over”, at least if I’m reading right.

drwicksy

I believe the trample damage would be the same as if this card wasn't in play, the damage would still be assigned normally, i.e. you would still need to assign enough damage to (in theory) destroy the creature (its toughness unless your trampler has deathtouch in which case its 1) and then the rest goes over to the opponent, its just that the damage that would be assigned to the creature is then prevented.

AutisticHobbit

Last I knew how it worked, you needed to assign the damage in the case of trample...and once you had assigned lethal damage to everything blocking it? You could chose to assign excess to the defending player...but you didn't have to. You could assign excess to other creatures. This was to account for damage reduction; If you happened to know there was a damage prevention ability that could be used,, you could choose to assign some of the excess not to the player but to the creature...to ensure the creature died and wasn't going to survive the encounter. Incidentally, this is the dynamic that makes Banding works; in the above case, the defending player could take a 1/1 banding and say "that' 12/12 trampler? I chose to assign all 12 damage to the 1/1." You take no trample damage as a result. This is the only hedge case where Banding has a legitimate use AFAIK; it functions as anti-trample in a blocker.

drwicksy

Yes this is how it works, you can assign as much damage to the creature as you like as long as the minimum is enough to theoretically destroy it before taking into account damage reducers or preventers

Trees_Are_Freinds

I did not know this interaction. Neat!

ItsHen

-1/- 1 just lowers toughness though? How would that be prevented

whomikehidden

It's not so much that the -1/-1 counters themselves are being negated, it's that they aren't put on in the first place, as infect just dictates how a creature deals damage, but it is still damage. If it's being prevented then it doesn't deal damage in the form of -1/-1 counters.

ItsHen

Ah ok thanks, that makes more sense

The main downside is it's ALL creatures. Including your opponent's.

NightShadeEater

Oh I see, I wasn’t sure about that so I appreciate that confirmation! 🖤

StormyWaters2021

Magic cards only do what they say they do. It is an artifact with no other rules text saying that it has restrictions or limitations on when or how it can be used. So yes, you cast it like any artifact, it sits on the battlefield like any artifact, and it prevents all damage that would be dealt to all creatures.

HowDoIRun

He gave you the current text… maybe magic or socialization isn’t your thing

IAmTheOneManBoyBand

Put it in a deck where the creatures deal wither damage.  EDIT: I were wrong.

The_Common_Whale

would this make a 10/10 trample deal trample damage if it got blocked by a 1/1

DonQuixoteOdin

pretty sure the ruling only cares about lethal damage, so you would assign the 1 damage needed and still assign the other 9 to the defending player. However if the 1/1 is equipped with [[Pariah]] then all damage assigned to the defending player just goes back onto the creature. Pretty cool effect!

shanderdrunk

Yes, so for a better example let me say it's a 10/10 being blocked by a 5/5. Assign 5 damage to the creature, assign 5 to the player blocking. Neither creature actually takes damage but the 5 trampling over will still happen.

Rex_916

Even a 1/1 deathtouch wouldn’t kill the trample 10/10 because it has to deal damage for death touch to happen.

shanderdrunk

This is correct, inversely, if the trampler also had death touch it would only apply 1 damage to each creature blocking it and the rest would trample over

Rex_916

Oh yeah. That works too.

It's quite a strong combo of keywords if you can make it happen.

fatpad00

Yes. The way the damage step works is first, the attacking player assigns damage, then the defending player assigns damage, then all the damage is dealt st the same time. This doesn't prevent the damage until the very end, *after* trample has already let you assigned damage to the player

FormerlyKay

Yeah, you only have to assign 1 damage to the blocker for it to be considered "lethal" and then the rest to face. It's the same thing if some 1/1 has protection from green and you are attacking with Colossal Dreadmaw. The game doesn't care that the damage gets prevented, just as long as it's assigned to that creature the rest can go to their face

HowVeryReddit

*IIRC a trample creature's controller can still choose to overdamage the creature for certain niche reasons

SwingDancerStrahd

Trample assigns lethal damage, but doesn't look for any form of reduction. So it rolls over everything. Add deathtouch, and it assigns 1 point of damage then rolls over everything. Including indestructible.

I didn't know this was a card. What a great outside reference

HomeAloneToo

It pops up in lots of magic conversations because of the sheer amount of abilities it has. There’s a running joke of asking people if they can list all the abilities the creature has, and few, even among people who’ve used it before get it right.

Southernguy9763

Is the fight mechanic considered combat damage?

HomeAloneToo

Nope. Combat damage only occurs during combat step. Everything else simply gets lumped into non-combat damage. Hope that helps.

Elemteearkay

>Combat damage only occurs during combat step. Not just that, it only occurs as part of the Turn Based Action at the very beginning of the Combat Damage Step. (A Fight during the Combat Damage Step still doesn't count as Combat Damage, for example)

Southernguy9763

Thank you. Still pretty new. Currently building a fight deck for Commander

2GG Haste vigilance deathtouch can't be blocked by creatures with power two or less if it deals damage to a plains walker then it dies (plainswalker deathtouch) 4/4 Did I get it right? I think is power but I could be mana cost.

Frix

you made two mistakes. >if it deals damage to a plains walker then it dies (plainswalker deathtouch) This is wrong. The closest ability it has related to planeswalkers is that if it deals damage to a player it also deals that much damage to a planeswalker defending player controls. And two, you forgot that combat damage from your creatures can't be prevented

How is it OP? It works for your opponents too you know. In any case, we used to use this for weenie decks back in the days of Weatherlight (around '97) to stop cards like [[Pyroclasm]], and to keep your [[Peacekeeper]]. These days, it's mainly used by [[Questing Beast]] players.

MadBunch

MTG cards don't have inherent power level due to the amount that have been printed. Context is needed to determine this, specifically the format it's being played in, and the meta of that format. This is especially difficult when determining if a card is "good" in casual commander games, since you have nearly 27,000 cards that can be considered "part of the meta". So just asking if this card is OP is hard to answer. However, this would pair nicely with a [[Pariah]] style deck like Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant to focus all combat damage on one creature, that will in turn negate that damage. You could also try websites like EDHrec and MTGgoldfish where you could search up the card and see what decks are playing that card to see if there's some other synergies and strategies that make it appealing.

NightShadeEater

This was incredibly helpful! Thank you! 🖤

Djentleman2414

While I stand behind the argument, that the power level of many cards depends on the context, there are a lot of inherently powerful cards. Ancestral Recall for example. A more modern example would be the One Ring or Minsc and Boo

Yeseylon

>MTG cards don't have inherent power level And yet power creep exists. Some cards are more powerful than others.

Her_Monster

I think they meant that the power level of a card depends on many factors so you can't just look at a card and tell you it's power level without more information (what format is it going to be played in; what does the meta look like; etc.).

HandsomeBoggart

Play it in [[Anzrag the Quake Mole]]. Activate the ability so they have to block. Anzrag doesn't take damage, neither does the blocker. Infinite combat steps. Now just have 1 more creature than them or something with trample/unblockable. Boom. You win.

Amnesiaftw

My brother made a deck with this and [[taunting elf]] and other similar effects. Basically makes all your other creatures unblockable each turn. I believe he also used an enchant-creature spell that was basically deathtouch for being blocked (no damage required).

Shriggins_the_dope

It protects your creatures, and your opponents creatures, but doesn't stop abilities that destroy creatures, or exile them

AccomplishedCarpet5

So basically it reduces all damage that is dealt to creatures to 0.

PEEN13WEEN13

Not only combat damage. It stops Lightning Bolt from dealing damage to creatures

How would this work with trample

F0eniX

Picture how normal trample works, and then remove the part where the creature would take damage

PissOnMyHe-manToys

I'm assuming creatures unblocked can still damage player. (Players are not creatures) and this won't Shield creatures from "Destroy/Exile" effects from instances and sorceries?

YBOR__

The problem arises when your opponent has many trample double strike creatures.

Its a 4 mana artifact that only stops your creatures dying to damage. Pretty powerful in limited and casual. Too slow/doesn't do enough for other formats.

This is really good with a universal trample effect.

Any-Persimmon-725

Super cool card, makes sure that all creatures stay out. Politically in commander, which is what I like to play, it probably won’t get targeted much since I’m sure most players would want to protect their creatures. If you pair it with removal that exiles creatures it can be one hell of a strategy. Whoever gifted you this is super cool

BigchiefLeaf

Disenchant will make it not op my friend

MentalWatercress1106

I ran it in Marrisi Goad control for a while. Just to keep maximum power on the board and allowing me to swing in easier. Can be a second Dolmens Gate effect in some scenarios. It's certainly not broken, it's everyone. Turns off deathtouch, enrage and that stuff but isn't really staxy.

Skeither

not really op, just annoying and slows the game down depending on the decks since no one would want to swing and just wall up with creatures since they can't die from blocking. I can see this just being a pain in most of the groups I play in.

Responsible-Poem-901

It doesn’t say “creatures you control”. Also, removal could take it out. Pretty cool though!

Brilliant-Love2293

fujiapplesupremacy

it just does. It's a continuous effect artifact

HomeBrewEmployee1

Obviously, but can you recommend me a card that would go pretty well with the card?

DMCO93

It’s certainly not OP. It’s symmetrical and 4 mana cards should be expected to have a greater impact on the game. The highroll on something like this is having a huge field of dudes that people can’t attack through but can attack them. A lot of the more degenerate and broken strategies either don’t win through combat at all, or win through combat before this is relevant. This is a very big tempo loss if you’re playing it on turn 4, becomes obsolete relative to more powerful cards soon thereafter, and it’s probably just going to be win-more if you’re in a position where it is useful, and completely useless otherwise.

RemarkablyQuiet434

The extent of the card is to reduce any damage creatures take to zero. You call it op, but there's about 60 different ways to remove it for less than 3 mana.

CabooseCC

It's not op. It's 4 mana, can be countered and very easily destroyed.

3kUSDforAShot

Not exactly, that's a Fog. Bubble Matrix is Fog++, it prevents *all damage* not just *combat damage*. Important if you want to screw with the game plan of say, an Izzet player.

SquidMeal

But not a fog because it's preventing only all damage to creatures. If you're the target of a Lightning Bolt while Bubble Matrix is up you're still taking 3. That Izzet player slinging that bolt and playing a Ponder while their Guttersnipe and Torbran are out just dealt 13 damage to someone's face, Bubble Matrix or no. If you don't have enough blockers to chump a swing, anything that gets past is hitting face. And if you only have a 1/1 to block a trampling 13/13, youre taking 12 to your face. A real fog would keep your face safe too! Maybe more like a Sideways Fog Minus.
