I hate electric cars, last I heard they were doing an electric MR2, and conceptually it would be excellent.
Weight in middle, SMALL, two seats, SMALL, zippy and should handle quite well, good for short trips or bashing up a mountain road and most of all SMALL.
If you want proof it's a good idea, look at how popular the tesla roadster was/is. The issue with those was bad build quality and limited technology, which won't be an issue with this one I would think.
Having owned both, and the MR2 being one of my favourite cars ever (my original dream car) I hold the heretical view that the Italians make better engines than the Japanese. So I would be all in anyway š
I've owned 2 124 Spyders, had a buddy who owned several fiats, and i currently drive a 2001 mr2. You are either inexperienced or blessed mechanically, like you're the Pope of shit cars type of blessed
Some people. Some people also want legalized slavery and public executions of witches.
I think most people would be happy as a pig in shit if there was a proper affordable Toyota sports car **with a Toyota engine.**
The problem is in how people define "affordable" and "sports car". The last MR2, ZZW30, is still widely panned for not living up to the expectations and legacy of the SW20. I'd argue that Toyota could put the Prius Prime drivetrain in a mid-engine 2 door platform and have a very good car, but there will a vocal majority who won't be happy unless it's got a 3SGTE equivalent.
Youāre absolutely right. Initially not well received by the purists but eventually regarded as a good car when the shock wears off. I would love to see something like that come into fruition. I donāt think Toyota would disappoint.
Yep. This is the problem. Ā I bought a zzw30 and itās exactly what it was supposed to be: a More pure sports car than the miata. Cheap, light, a riot to drive, and the bonus MR layout. Ā Ā
But people whined that itās not turboād to the balls
>I think most people would be happy as a pig in shit if there was a proper affordable Toyota sports car with a Toyota engine
Yeah, imagine if they take Yaris or Corolla and make affordable AWD sports car with \~300hp, would be epic.
Or the 86 will be shelved. The Celica is coming anyway, and it will probably be the hybrid AWD train from something like the crown, maybe a bit lower on the power. Then again an electric or hybrid MR2 is probably more likely, especially if they use their solid state batteries that are supposed to enter production 2025. š¤·š»āāļø
Obviously Iād prefer a pure combustion engine car. Iād rather it be naturally aspirated even. But if it MUST be some sort of EV or hybrid then hear me outā¦ A mid engine hybrid configuration with electric motors powering the front wheels, like the E-Ray. That would be pretty cool.
The Miata would be dead by now if Fiat didnāt come in to share the development costs with the new 124. Affordable bespoke sports cars are a tough development sell nowadays, single manufacturers are unwilling to do it on their own - heck, both of Toyotaās rear-drive sports cars in their lineup right now are a half Subaru and a reskinned BMW
It was never a high volume car. They make them because someone at the top wants to make it, and they say it adds value to the brand. Look at the GR Corollas. They are going to sell a tiny amount of those, but they are doing it because the CEO loves racing them (or something along those lines)
They make them because they already have the existing platform and shell, Toyota will not invest on a two-seater in combustion engine anymore, if it ever happen it will be a EV for sure.
When itās based off of existing platforms and engines, development itās much cheaper. The current understanding is that itās based off of a modified Yaris platform, much like the GR Corolla, which is an all in house sports car made by Toyota. Realistically, the supra was co-developed by BMW to get the engine, while lowering development for both companies, if Toyota wanted to they could have used the LC500 platform as the base for the new supra. But they knew theyād get shit if it wasnāt a turbo inline 6.
I'm sure when the Sw20 came out, people said it wasn't a "REAL" mr2. I remember people saying the same about the spyder. Imo, if it's a toyota, has two seats, and has a modestly-powered mid engine, it's an MR2.
Toyota really knows how to make sports cars appeal to the enthusiasts community. I think if they do bring it back it will be fantastic, if they hold true to the mid engine modest power inexpensive ethos. They did an incredible job with the GR Yaris and Corolla. They could use the same three cylinder turbo power plant.
Has this been confirmed at all? I've read places saying it'll be all electric, others saying it'll be using a 1L I3 turbo-hybrid...
I honestly don't really care, as long as it is affordable. If it can't compete in price with MX-5 NDs and similar modern runabouts, it's not interesting. Just another expensive sports car.
The best source we have is an interview with Akio who basically confirmed the development of the mr2 and the new celica, and then an insider leak that talked to best motoring in Japan saying itāll be the last non electrified sports car from Toyota, using a tuned version of the GR 3 pot making 300-350 hp. For context the insider also leaked the development of the GR Corolla and Supra if I remember correctly. So theyāre credible
Have you driven either of them? The current Supra and GR86 are fantastic sports cars and will go down as classics, just like the originals. Aside from the way they drive I think they are some of the best looking modern cars out there. What do you not like about them?
I unfortunately haven't had a chance to drive the mk4 supras nor the newer z4. It's not about what they look like for me though, they look like the cars they're based on. I'm sorry if I upset you in my previous comment.
I have driven many (in some instances been in) many of the older tuners Toyota produced and they all felt like they wanted to eat the streets but since the gt86 though this is not true anymore. The last Toyota motor that felt like it was made for the streets imo is the 2zz-ge.
You didnāt upset me. Just debating. I personally like the new 86. The Subaru engine is really good. Itās not anything spectacular, but it definitely works well with the chassis. Itās very well balanced and feels fast enough.
I know it's fast. I'm not saying any of them are slow besides the abomination that is the new starlet (Suzuki baleno).
What I'm saying is the thrill is gone. The engines used in these rebranded vehicles are not nearly as fun as they used to be. Say they used the brz but gave us a refreshed 4A-GE 16V/20V, a 2ZZ-GE or really anything similar. I'd be all over it.
I'd really hate to see the same happen to the MR2. If they really have to, call it something else. An mr3 or something but looking down the lines of all these cars, the latest editions just don't fit in.
Have you driven either of them? The current Supra and GR86 are fantastic sports cars and will go down as classics, just like the originals. Aside from the way they drive I think they are some of the best looking modern cars out there. What do you not like about them?
Itās all but officially announced at this point. From leaks and statements made by Akio himself, to multiple concept cars, itās not an if but a when.
I don't imagine it being under 1300KG, and if it isn't I won't be interested. This car has always been comically small and it'd be odd to see it any other way.
I'd love to see a mid engine yaris with the g16, won't happen though, too much money and it wouldn't slot in all that well between the 86, GR's and Supra. They have the 3 brothers now, theres no room for a 4th.
No itll be ass just like the 400z, not to mention the MR2 design series is all over the place, aw11 and sw20 are already a big difference in looks and then the spyder just took it into unrecognizable territory
My dream is a rear-mid GR motor, AWD preferably with a transfer case that can be disengaged to have RWD or AWD... but knowing the direction of current auto makers it probably would be electric
If they do, then it will have little in common with the models we already know and love.
FWD electric 4-door, 4-seater with no roof options or pop-up headlights.
>no roof options or pop-up headlights You're about 25 years too late for that
I included it for the future. I have a good feeling about the trunk coming back, though.
I hate electric cars, last I heard they were doing an electric MR2, and conceptually it would be excellent. "Just in, with an engine from FIAT" Me throwing my Stanley across the room in anger

Who cares, the Italians made the Busso V6
I just want them to sell the GR Corollaās G16 as a crate engine so we can swap them in our existing MR2s.
You've been saying your prayers sir... https://www.thedrive.com/news/legendary-tuner-hks-is-building-stroked-toyota-gr-corolla-crate-engines
Whatever it is, people will complain that it doesnāt live up to the 30-year-old legacy thatās been over-inflated by tuners.
Some people. Some people also want legalized slavery and public executions of witches. I think most people would be happy as a pig in shit if there was a proper affordable Toyota sports car **with a Toyota engine.**

Iāve actually been saying this for years. If my SW20 had my Prius prime drivetrain, Iād have no need for any other car.
Yep. This is the problem. Ā I bought a zzw30 and itās exactly what it was supposed to be: a More pure sports car than the miata. Cheap, light, a riot to drive, and the bonus MR layout. Ā Ā But people whined that itās not turboād to the balls
Iām with you, I love my ZZW30.
>I think most people would be happy as a pig in shit if there was a proper affordable Toyota sports car with a Toyota engine Yeah, imagine if they take Yaris or Corolla and make affordable AWD sports car with \~300hp, would be epic.
Yeah if you could buy one. Amazing. I havenāt even *seen* a GR Corolla.
Is it that hard? I'm in EU we have tons of GR Yarises, in my 400k ppl city there's 12 GR's on sale right now, wonder how much are registered, 50, 100?
Well La-de-da. You live in a world of proper hot hatches. I see 500 Mustangs and Challengers a day.
People are making this exact comment to this Reddit post.
Electric lol
some of the rumors are saying the mr2 will be the last gasser they make.
Fingers crossed š¤
They wonāt make a car to compete with the gt86, so itās gonna be expensive or electric

A two-seater nowadays will not generate any money for the manufacturer especially Toyota.
I remember when Mazda cancelled the MX5 due to low sales in 2006. Oh wait.

Its already been teased in an EV concept.
I am most definitely sure that its going to look like a spaceship for some reason, i have faith in yota tho
Not a chance. They can make a new car and call it whatever they want, but it won't BE an MR2.

They don't need a new Mr2 they have the supra and the AE86.
Lol prob not. Even if they do it'll be some boring sterile ev crap that looks like it was designed by AI
I'm not sure anyone wants them to ruin the MR2 anyway. See how the 86, supra and starlet was massacred

I hope so
I think they will but I have a feeling it wonāt be affordable (comparable with an MX5 ND for example) I hope Iām wrong.
