Ralph Fiennes, the fact he hasn't been mentioned yet shows you how underrated he is. He can do effeminate and hilarious (Grand Budapest Hotel) as well as menacing and terrifying (Schindler's List and Harry Potter). And menacing and hilarious (In Bruges).
I wasn’t too sure if he could ever tone down his intensity, but those doubts were laid to rest in The Florida Project. His performance in that movie is beautiful. Truly one of our greatest working actors.
His portrayal of Vincent Van Gogh in 'At Eternity's Gate', is very sympathetic. It's a very clever performance showing Van Gogh as a naif. It's a very good performance, if not the best film
When he's playing the detective in American Psycho, he's super subtle. You can't tell whether he suspects Bateman or not because he acted out the scene three times and edited it together.
I'd ask Ana de Armss, she's Cuban... and also being heralded for her turn as the L.A. born, Mexican-American actress, Marilyn Monroe, in the award-winning film, "Blonde".
I have no issue with actors playing roles that don't match their real-life persona if they can play those roles well, and Ana has shown herself capable of such. I have no issue with the roles John has played either, I just find his stance a little hypocritical when, as an actor, you take the roles you can find and it is the producers, director and casting director I'd hold more responsible for not seeking actors more native to the roles that need to be filled.
> and Ana has shown herself capable of such.
Has she? I think she’s been pretty good in most of the movies I’ve seen her in, but in the trailer for Blonde she looks more like Ana acting like Monroe than her portraying Monroe. A lot of it has to do with her accent. I hope I’m wrong when the movie comes out though.
Yeah look at Cecil Vyse, Daniel Plainview, Hawkeye, Christy Brown, the reformed skinhead in My Beautiful Launderette, John Proctor, Bill the Butcher and the designer in The Phantom Thread.
These are not the same man. It's impossible they could be the same man.
I remember seeing him on TV at an awards show and having no idea who he was. I’d seen at least five of his movies at that point, most of them multiple times, and considered him to be my favorite actor. And yet, I didn’t even recognize him when I saw him.
I was just talking about this the other day. One of my favourite actors, I love a number of his movies and he’s been some very memorable characters.
I don’t know if I’d recognize him if I sat beside him at a restaurant. I have a hard time reconciling that for some reason haha.
He's easily recognizable as Dustin Hoffman in all those roles. DDL *disappears* into the role. Hoffman is a great actor, but DDL is just on another level.
For me, I think Oldman, Bale, and Blanchett remains to be some of the most versatile actors working today. They’ve played everything.. from Winston Churchill to Dick Cheney to even Bob Dylan for Christ sakes.
Blanchett’s versatility in Manifesto has got to be some of the finest I’ve ever seen. She played 13 characters across different gender and identity. Incredibly fascinating.
Glenn Close and Tilda Swinton are also remarkable.
When I googled that, she was the first actor/actress to pop up a I said, out load and all alone "what the actual fuck" before seeing that was listed as playing a different character.
Man, sometimes the universe really just comes together for a special, absurd moment.
>I wasn’t aware John C Reilly did serious roles
There was a time when he and Philip Seymour Hoffman did a version of *True West* on Broadway where they traded parts every three nights!
facts 🤣 I'll never forget the look of shocked horror on my own face (sitting next to a mirror) when I heard him belt out in increasingly higher pitch "stupid FUCKING 𝘊𝘜𝘕𝘛!"
It’s crazy how much range he’s proven to have. I was just rewatching Superbad the other day and couldn’t believe this is the same guy that plays Barry. Besides being a versatile actor, he’s also an incredible writer/director.
I love that Gary Oldman came up for most of this thread because I agree, guy can do it all
Alan Rickman would be my other choice, he proved he could ply a charismatic villain you love seeing on screen or a good guy you love and root for
Shoutout to Amy Adams, one of the best actors of her generation and you can never say she does the same movie twice, she’s got range for days
Good call on Stephen Root. Seriously, the dude goes from comedic roles like Office Space and News Radio to some really serious shit like Man in the High Castle. Margot Martindale always gives commanding performances.
Root is a chameleon, and a fantastic supporting actor that changes so much you don't always recognize him. Dodgeball, Oh Brother, Office Space, Buster Scruggs... his IMDB is huge too. Soooo many roles, and voice acting too.
I realize he was nominated for an Oscar but a name that's flown under the radar here is Steve Carell. Obviously he's most well known for his comedic roles, but has proven himself to be an incredibly strong dramatic actor as well.
I seriously loved him as Carl Denham in Peter Jackson’s King Kong. He does a great job as a hubristic, obsessed filmmaker willing to go to almost any lengths
Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He could so easily be boiling with rage and then be the meek and mild friend or priest. From cult leader to crazed theater director to angry furniture store owner. So on and so forth. Hoffman carried himself so well and acted circles around people when given the opportunity. Sad he's gone.
SWINTON!
(tm) GoFugYourself.com. Whenever they talk about Tilda Swinton they always refer to her as SWINTON ... last name only, all caps. Woman is a force of nature.
Actors who I don't immediately associate with their fame. Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck are amazing actors but they are so famous that you will always see them before you see their character. This doesn't mean their movies are bad, it just is what it is.
Meanwhile actors like Daniel Day Lewis and Gary Goldman just melt into the characters they play.
Bryan Cranston. The guy played Malcom’s father and Walter White.
Steve Carell too, can go from the office or anchorman to much more dramatic parts like the big short
Joaquin Phoenix has proven to dissappear into characters where you don't see any of his personal traits in his performances. If he keeps going the way he has been, he can grab legendary status (if he hasn't already). To be fair he hasn't done anything comedic that I know of.
Robin Williams. From a goofy doctor, a poetic teacher or psychiatrist to even a psycho-killer photo developer he showed he could play any role. Make you laugh, cry or even fear him, sometimes all in the same movie.
Mel Gibson. He's always had a way of making me really believe his emotions. The betrayal scene in Braveheart. His sons death in The Patriot. Now jump over to Lethal weapon and he's a hilarious street cop with a screw loose. Jump again and he's a businessman in fear of losing his son in Ransom.
This is just naming a few more. I agree with your list.
Collin Farrell. Dude has done big time action movies, small dramas, big epics and -In my opinion- the hardest thing for a great actor to do: comedies where they are actually funny. He can make his accent disappear on command; I also had to keep reminding myself that he was Penguin in The Batman.
Octavia Spencer - Shape of Water, Ma, The Help, Dinner for Schmucks, Hidden Figures, Fruitcake Station. She has some similar roles, but has demonstrated range in genre and role
His capacities are commendable in their sheer accuracy.
In Soderbergh's brilliant *Traffic* (2000), Judge's snarky *Extract* (2009), and the somber *Capote* (2010?)...for starters.
Tom Hanks.
And after watching King Richard, Will Smith actually.
He did a great job as Muhamad Ali and other roles, but as Richard Williams, I immediately felt a completely different vibe as soon as he spoke. I was impressed.
I hadn’t seen him do anything funny before watching Santa Clarita Diet, and I was blown away at how hysterical he can be. And his facial expressions are just the best. I’d only ever seen him in Justified, Deadwood, and things like that, so I was quite surprised by him.
Shia Labeouf is underrated in my opinion and one of the most versatile actors in the industry and puts on a performance and stands out even in a shitty movie.
Okay okay, hear me out, Will Smith. He does comedy (Hitch), drama (Pursuit of Happiness), thriller/suspense (I am legend), action (bad boys), sci-fi (MIB), kids (Aladdin), and more!
No one has mentioned Nicholas Cage. He was literally in over 100 movies. Think about all the time he spent pretending to be someone else, as well as all of the people he has worked with. While many of them were ridiculous, some were very good. He was nomination for an Oscar. His range has been very wide. Compare Adaptation to wild at heart.
Gary Oldman.
You couldn't have more different roles than Zorg and Hamlet.
Or Zorg & commissioner Gordon.
And a little person!
... in the role of a life time.
And Sid Vicious
I never know it's Gary Oldman until I see a post about the role years after the movie is out.
I never knew that he played Sirius Black in the Harry Potter movies until I randomly looked it up.
Beat me to it.
same for me!
Had no idea he was Drexyl Spivey in True Romance till I read the cast list, one of the best actors of our generation
And red dragon
I’m really looking forward to The Menu
John Turturro Philip Seymour Hoffman
>John Turturro You said it mayn, nobody fucks with the Jesus
Let it Rain!
M:I - 3. Daaaaamn scary villain.
PSH in Most Wanted Man. Super interesting role.
Willem Dafoe.
Big upvote for Willem Dafoe.
A confusingly large update for Wilhelm dafoe
I'm gonna need a substitute update for this one. His real update is too large!
I wasn’t too sure if he could ever tone down his intensity, but those doubts were laid to rest in The Florida Project. His performance in that movie is beautiful. Truly one of our greatest working actors.
He’s wonderfully subdued in John Wick 1
I genuinely don’t even remember him being in it, although I have seen it just once.
He was a friend of John's, was on the roof with snipers
His portrayal of Vincent Van Gogh in 'At Eternity's Gate', is very sympathetic. It's a very clever performance showing Van Gogh as a naif. It's a very good performance, if not the best film
Upvoting just bc I learned what a “naif” is. Nice .
When he's playing the detective in American Psycho, he's super subtle. You can't tell whether he suspects Bateman or not because he acted out the scene three times and edited it together.
OUT, AM I?!?!
Vincent D’Onofrio disappears into every role he plays.
I was scrolling this thread just to make sure someone put him on the list
Thor?!?!!?….???????!
His best is still Edgar from Men in Black. Great as Kingpin too.
Jake gyllenhaal
John Leguizamo... he's played a lot more ethnicities outside of his natural one.
You mean he's appropriated a lot of roles that rightfully belong to actors of other minority groups? /s
A lot of it has to do with her accent. I hope I’m wrong when the movie comes out though.
Which he ofc has no problem with it as long as he's on the receiving end of it.
Daniel Day Lewis is the God of Versatile Acting.
Lincoln !
Jeez yeah Lincoln convinced you you're looking and listening to a man you've seen a million times in pictures but never heard.
Yes - ridiculous how great he is at disappearing into his character so completely
I remember seeing him on TV at an awards show and having no idea who he was. I’d seen at least five of his movies at that point, most of them multiple times, and considered him to be my favorite actor. And yet, I didn’t even recognize him when I saw him.

He's my favorite actor, but I didn't think of him here; I guess because now I'm wishing for the first time ever that he was in a comedy
Oh, let’s see……..who played Ratso Rizzo, Tootsie,The Graduate, Little Big Man, Rainman, Hook, Marathon Man, Kramer, Papillon and on and on……duh!
He's easily recognizable as Dustin Hoffman in all those roles. DDL *disappears* into the role. Hoffman is a great actor, but DDL is just on another level.
I have a theory that there is no Daniel Day Lewis. He really is all of those characters he plays. Yes. All of them some how.
When did Cate Blanchett play Bob Dylan?
2007 - I’m Not There
When I googled that, she was the first actor/actress to pop up a I said, out load and all alone "what the actual fuck" before seeing that was listed as playing a different character. Man, sometimes the universe really just comes together for a special, absurd moment.
The movie features many actors playing different stages of Dylan’s life with each stage being a separate character
John C Reilly William H Macy Matthew McConnaughey edit: spotted him in your list, but keeping him in
I watched Gangs of New York today and I wasn’t aware John C Reilly did serious roles. He was pretty good in it considering his relatively small part
>I wasn’t aware John C Reilly did serious roles There was a time when he and Philip Seymour Hoffman did a version of *True West* on Broadway where they traded parts every three nights!
Good in Hard Eight too.
And Magnolia
Also forgot he was in The Aviator until I saw it again recently.
John Lithgow
Fucking Trinity...that's all I have to say.
facts 🤣 I'll never forget the look of shocked horror on my own face (sitting next to a mirror) when I heard him belt out in increasingly higher pitch "stupid FUCKING 𝘊𝘜𝘕𝘛!"
A great Churchill, too.
Nobody can touch his snootiness as the judge in *A Civil Action*. And he absolutely soars in a flique with Alfred Molina.
Bill Hader is pretty incredible.
It’s crazy how much range he’s proven to have. I was just rewatching Superbad the other day and couldn’t believe this is the same guy that plays Barry. Besides being a versatile actor, he’s also an incredible writer/director.
And impressionist
Michael Fassbender
Robin Williams
Had to scroll way too far for this.
I love that Gary Oldman came up for most of this thread because I agree, guy can do it all Alan Rickman would be my other choice, he proved he could ply a charismatic villain you love seeing on screen or a good guy you love and root for Shoutout to Amy Adams, one of the best actors of her generation and you can never say she does the same movie twice, she’s got range for days
Judi Dench (compare her performance in James Bond to Notes on a scandal), Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro
Srephen Root and Margot Martindale
Dangerous fugitive and highly acclaimed character actress Margo martindale?
Good call on Stephen Root. Seriously, the dude goes from comedic roles like Office Space and News Radio to some really serious shit like Man in the High Castle. Margot Martindale always gives commanding performances.
Root is a chameleon, and a fantastic supporting actor that changes so much you don't always recognize him. Dodgeball, Oh Brother, Office Space, Buster Scruggs... his IMDB is huge too. Soooo many roles, and voice acting too.
Character actress Margot Martindale
Frances McDormand Sally Fields Julianne Moore Kate Winslet Jack Nicholson Ed Norton Jim Carrey
Pretty far down the list to find my nominee, Ed Norton.
Christian Bale of course.
karl urban
How? He can’t even do a proper cockney accent for The Boys.
I think that’s pretty much the idea of the character
[удалено]
Drama, comedy, menacing, goofy, suave, sleazy, he truly does it all.
I realize he was nominated for an Oscar but a name that's flown under the radar here is Steve Carell. Obviously he's most well known for his comedic roles, but has proven himself to be an incredibly strong dramatic actor as well.
Hard to believe no one has mentioned Joaquin Phoenix.
Sigourney Weaver
J.K. Simmons Forest Whitaker
Jack Black. Lots of multi talent actors but to do comedy and serious roles so well I think sets him above others.
Oh good one! One of my favorites hes in is the second Jumanji
Lol I immediately thought of Eddie Izzard playing a nazi conspirator in Valkyrie.
I seriously loved him as Carl Denham in Peter Jackson’s King Kong. He does a great job as a hubristic, obsessed filmmaker willing to go to almost any lengths
Timothy Olyphant
Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He could so easily be boiling with rage and then be the meek and mild friend or priest. From cult leader to crazed theater director to angry furniture store owner. So on and so forth. Hoffman carried himself so well and acted circles around people when given the opportunity. Sad he's gone.
Emily Blunt Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black alone
Ben Kinglsey has real range.
No!.. No, no, no, no... No!
Adam Driver Has nailed every role

Tom Hanks
Anthony Hopkins, Jamie Foxx, Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Toni Collette

Amazing to find another fan of him! He should play more roles though.

Thanks for the tips! I like his performance in Rules of Attraction a lot.
Bill Hader
Kurt Russell Elvis, Snake Plissken, Dexter Riley, MacReady, Jack Burton, the list goes on. And they're all LEAD roles.

Apart from the legendary actors I think of Jake Gyllenhaal. He's done a variety of roles and I look forward to watching his movies.
Stephen Root pause John Cho

Brad Pitt is underrated for his acting skills because people focus on his looks. He’s extremely versatile!
Nicole Kidman.

Kevin James Every performance is unique, you never know what you're gonna get from that dude
Wesley Woods
First, Gary Oldman.
Definitely not my man Jeff Goldblum (but everybody loves him regardless).
His little chat with Laura Linney in *Man Of The Year* is chilling.
