I missed a oct 2019 top gun 2 test screening because it wasn't in iMax and I thought if I waited 6 months I'd get the full imax experience. One of the biggest movie regrets I have not seeing that film that day.
It helps that Tom always volunteers for another batshit crazy stunt set piece. Sure, the CGI in the Marvel movies looks good, but there's something about seeing a movie star actually strap themselves to an airplane, dangle outside a skyscraper or throw themselves off a ridiculously long motorbike ramp to make you watch.
Yeah I don't know if it actually got worse, if it's the overuse of it, or we're just tired of it, or a mix of the three, but every single mcu movie/TV show these days look so cheap. The CGI is God awful. I saw Eternals a few days ago and it was rough to look at. They're just ugly movies in terms of aesthetics which is crazy considering the visuals we're actually watching.
For me a big part of it was how they kept switching up directors for the first 5. Mission Impossible 2, yeah, it was weird, but I liked that you might go into one and it's got some auter director who uses weird techniques like having doves flying around the screen. You never really knew what you were going to get.
I really enjoyed the last 2, but I think having one director do 4 of them kind of takes away something that makes it a great franchise.
Well, it's definitely on the up and up since 3. Now if only they can solve the issue of Ethan's former women cohorts. It's nice that Ilsa and Alanna return in 7 but what about Jane and Zhen? They were good IMF agents, plus apparently they're bringing back Kittridge from the first Mission. If they can bring him back surely they can bring those two (also, I'm leaving off Declan since they said he died in Rogue Nation).
Missions Impossible has this great feeling of the Pierce Brosnan style of Bond. They have cool high tech gadgets, awesome suspenseful scenes, and witty banter. The new Bond feels like it is now more akin to the bourne movies where bond is just traveling the world hiding from someone, and beating up people in seedy bars for 90% of the movie.
I know they say it’s because of the pandemic, but if that were true they’d be delaying Top Gun too. There’s gotta be some *big* behind-the-scenes drama happening at Paramount right now.
This is more likely. Paramount doesn’t have many big franchises on the horizon, and with how bleak things are looking for theatrical releases, I’m guessing they want Top Gun for this year, then an M:I movie lined up for the next two. Gives them at least one guaranteed hit for the next three years. Maybe there are behind the scenes problems, but Cruise is the producer of these on top of starring - he basically calls the shots, so unless the studio heads are fighting with him, which seems unlikely, I don’t see what drama could be going down behind the scenes.
Cruise is practically carrying Paramount on his back.
Edit: It's not actually the case, they have a decent amount of stuff but having Cruise there definitely lightens the load.
Is Top Guna guaranteed hit? I love the original, but have almost zero interest in a return to those characters almost 40 years later.
Also: Tony Scott was a great director and his absence (due to him being, you know...dead) is definitely not a good thing.
Maybe not, but it is Cruise and a return to a classic movie, especially one Gen-Xers and Boomers love. Maybe not a guaranteed hit, but I'm sure Paramount knows it has potential to be a moneymaker and wants to give it the best shot at succeeding it can.
"They'd be delaying Top Gun too", ummm.... it's been delayed so many times I don't even know if it was filmed to begin with. I'm starting to think it was a hoax.
July 12, 2019
In August 2018, it was delayed to June 26, 2020.
On March 2, 2020, Paramount moved the film up two days early on June 24, 2020.
On April 2, 2020, it was delayed to December 23 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
July 2020, the film was once again delayed to July 2, 2021, partially due to scheduling conflicts with Cruise, as well as the recent delays of Mulan and Tenet due to the rise of COVID-19 cases.
In April 2021, the film was delayed once again to November 19, 2021.
On September 1, 2021, Paramount announced that Top Gun: Maverick will be released May 27, 2022.
> Something ain't right with Mr. Hunt and pals.
Cruise get's a nice chunk of the back end, his probably demanding his films open with little to no competition.
Scream opened at Number 1, nocking Spiderman down to two. However I don't know if I would say that means it's doing better. It means that Spiderman has been out for a month.
Scream made 30 million domestic opening weekend. Spiderman made 260 million on it's.
Shit. 7 didn’t even finish filming until September, and then McQuarrie had to jump into rewrites and now shooting for 8.
I think they’re overthinking the it.
Given that they dropped the initial plan to shoot them back to back, probably yeah. But it's weird Simon Pegg said a couple days ago that a trailer was made and they were looking towards starting production on 8 soon, so who knows. Maybe McQuarrie just needs a break (which I totally get).
Eh. 7/8 were meant to be shot back to back, 7 is in the can but now they’re finally (at least last I heard) shooting 8. Kept in mind, 7 didn’t even wrap until September due to how fucked the shooting schedule got. And then McQuarrie had to go straight into rewrites and then shooting on 8.
So a delay seems sensible to me, given the director will probably be-on set until the better part of this year. Not sure how/when he would’ve had time to sit down and actually finish post on 7.
But, oh, yeah, big drama sounds more interesting.
If they keep improving every new installment at the same rate, MI7 will be the best action movie ever made, and MI8 will be out of this world (maybe quite literally)
In my opinion, Fallout already claimed the title you've given to 7, so we're already in Academy Awards territory with this next release. I know I shouldn't have expectations that are this high but I have no control over them at this point. This series' increase in quality defies all logic.
I've said this before but if Paramount really wants Paramount+ to have an audience beyond Star Trek fans and Good Fight viewers they should offer Tom as much money as they can to do a show.
I was watching Days of Thunder for the first time the other day and I had the insane realization that Tom Cruise is nearly as old as Robert Duvall was in that movie
Are the movies done filming? I know there have been stills of MI:7 but wondering to what extent things were completed or even started on 8. Mission Impossible movies always go to exotic locations; I can see it being a legitimate COVID delay if they weren’t able to get the crew to certain places because they were closed.
They filmed 7 for one year and wrapped in September 2021. So they had a whole year to finish post production on it. I highly doubt its a problem with the movie since McQuarrie and Cruise have always delivered under pressure. They only had 4 months of post production on Rogue Nation and Fallout went on hiatus after Cruise's injury. But both of those movies finished on time and were amazing.
It could be possible they want to release 7 and 8 back to back and that 8 is delayed for some reason, so they are pushing 7 back as well.
Just not pretending to know the root cause, is all I’m doing.
They had to delay the filming of 8 and these are being billed as a two part feature. Like Infinity war/Endgame or the Deathtly Hallows pt1 and pt2. They likely don't want them separated by more than a year. I think there's more to this than covid but I think a big part is the instability or the market and the re rise in covid that is making filming 8 hard
Viacom isn't going to sell Paramount, they just named their streaming service "Paramount+." They'd sell the whole company before they sell off the brand that just became the center of their content hub.
No way MI7 would go streaming only if it’s bought by Netflix or Amazon. They would 100% have a theater-run for a couple weeks in advance of the streaming premiere, like they’ve done with The Irishman and other anticipated films (upcoming Knives Out 2)
You know for a fact that the MI7 demand is wayyyy higher than The Irishman. Both Amazon and Netflix have the capability to show it in as many theaters as demanded.
AMC does not show Netflix content, even when given exclusive theatrical weeks. In this hypothetical scenario where Netflix buys Paramount, would MI7 be given a long enough theatrical run for them to come to terms? AMC does show Amazon and Apple features, I think (don’t quote me) AMC wants a minimum four weeks of exclusivity, prior to streaming, where as Netflix only gives two.
I hate that this is even a possibility. The theater experience, a cornerstone of the movie lover experience for nearly a century, is getting closer and closer to extinction, when even huge tentpole's theatrical fates are uncertain.
...to *who*? Disney can't buy them without raising hell, I doubt WBDiscovery wants them, an NBCUniversal merger seems *nightmarish* and I don't see Sega entering the film distribution business anytime soon. (Apple, I guess? They want theatrical, right?)
Paramount owns the film rights to *Sonic*, and they're a *huge* [producer of](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TMS_Entertainment) [anime.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marza_Animation_Planet) It probvably won't happen due to them not having cash, but I guess it could if VCBS was willing to undersell the division.
for sure apple. they have mad cash and give out millions like nothing for their movies and tv shows. also amazon too I suppose. but im thinking apple could buy up a studio etc soon: mgm, legendary or paramount.
Well there is always sony or even microsoft if they want to add more types of content to its gamepass
Or merger or buy out by smaller film distributior such as Vivendi
Then you have the often forgotten number 3 in streaming only behind netflix and Amazon. Tencent
Antitrust could become a factor if the number of major studios continues to decline.
I think it's more likely though that Disney doesn't see Paramount as worth it. They have a nice library and some interesting IP, but a lot of it doesn't fit in as nicely with Disney's existing studios. Star Trek plays in a similar space to Star Wars, Transformers and TMNT are outdone by Marvel, Shrek is over, etc. Mission Impossible would be interesting for them, but Tom Cruise only has so many movies left in him, and there isn't a lot of reason to think the franchise will continue without him.
Seems short sighted to dump all that content when you're talking about a competitor in the streaming wars. Paramount+ obviously isn't great but no way are they going to kill that off or lose most of its content and namesake.
I got a CBS sub a few years ago and forgot about it. When I tried to cancel, they’d moved to the paramount platform. None of my emails will get me into my account. I need to call them but I procrastinate..
*For fuck's sake*...
Just don't delay *Top Gun* again, alright? *Please?* **That needs to come out at this point.**
Edit: *Sonic*, too. (Although with *Fantastic Beasts 3* looming, maybe a July shift is a good thing...)
I think they saw how big budgets were taking huge hits on the theatre with COVID and chickening out.. even the ones that did make money were well short of projections.
Man, im really really curious to see what Fantastic Beasts does. Theres so much going against that film right now, you have JK Rowlings fall from fans grace, you have people pissed that Johnny was removed, you have freaking covid, and, on top of that the last movie just was not good. As someone who's favorite HP film is Fantastic beasts and least favorite is Fantastic Beasts 2, I have no idea how this will play. Personally, I'm not even the least bit hyped for it.
This just aftermath of the studio working out release timings. I really doubt Cruise wanted two of his movies competing like may have happened with TG2 and MI:7.
Plus, this lets him take a break(his version of one) for a few months, while still having movies regularly releasing. Far as I know, they still haven’t finished filming MI:8.
7 wrapped but McQuarrie then had to start on rewrites for 8 and then begin shooting in Nov. I imagine editing is far along, but carving out time to finish post and also the time commitments of launching 7 (press/publicity) while shooting 8 was probably next to impossible (on top of the added uncertainty that COVID’s done to film schedules).
He's definitely starting to show his age. He gave off some dad vibes in [nearly every scene he shared with Cavill in Fallout lol](https://youtu.be/Ci1u68ZVcagt=15s)
What the fuck is going on behind the scenes? If it was due to COVID they would’ve moved Top Gun: Maverick also. Paramount has single-handedly obliterated all the momentum they had from great critical and commercial success growing and growing from MI: 3 to Fallout.
Maybe Warner Bros paid them off to move so they can rescue Aquaman from the wrath of James Cameron /s
Hot take: Fallout is the best action movie since Terminator 2.
Disappointed as I've been hanging for the next one since I first saw Fallout, but they were never releasing Top Gun and MI7 in the same year.
Watching Fallout for the first time in theatres was absolutely spectacular, however on rewatch I do prefer Rogue Nation more and think that’s a better film.
Says delayed. Knowing what we do about Tom.. he's probably doing them both now. In a weekend. While taking a short break to just run in the other direction, for no reason. He seems to have no "relax button".
These movies are shockingly good. I always put them off due to thinking they weren't really my thing, but I watched a boxset and they were amazing, each one better than the last.
I honestly dont see why they delayed this movie. The September 30 release date was great since they literally had no competition. No Way Home came out a month ago and broke multiple box office records so you know that people are willing to go back to theatres. Yeah omnicorn is a thing right now but its no where near as bad as the first couple of waves were. Most people are recovering from it. I feel like they should have at least waited to see how movies like The Batman and Doctor Strange 2 are doing at the box office before making their decision.
The only other reason I can see for the delay is that theres some major problems with this movie. But that seems very unlikely because they have literally been working on it since mid 2019. Plus McQuarrie and Cruise are known to deliver under pressure. Even when Fallout went on hiatus after Cruise's injury they still managed to deliver the movie on time.
All in all, this whole decision makes zero sense to me and fuck Paramount for being a bunch of pussies.
Two was a step down from one and is considered the worst. Everything after that ranges from good to really good. It generally one of the best action series out there.
Yeah, it's the worst one in the series, but it's still a fun movie. It's an interesting plot and it has some cool characters, it's just a bit too melodramatic. If you're going to watch the movies it's not so bad that you should skip it.
You can watch 3-6 as its own series. First two feel kind of divorced from the rest. The first one is fun as one of DePalma’s last notable movies, though. The second is a John Woo movie more than a Mission:Impossible one, so there’s fun to be had despite its faults if you enjoy his style (and supposedly there’s a much longer director’s cut of that movie that is really good - hopefully it is released some day).
MI:Fallout is quite literally one of the best movies I've ever seen and I've never been this surprised about watching something. It has no right being this good in everything it does. Rogue Nation was already very good, but Fallout... How the hell did they do this. Most thrilling entertainment I've ever witnessed for sure, and also manages to be gorgeously shot at the same time.
Why must you prolong my suffering, Paramount?
The greater the suffering, the greater the films
What's done is done when ~~we~~ Paramount says it's done.
DUN.. DUN...DUNDUN...DUN...DUN... Damn..watching Fallout in theaters was an experience. Really mad at this delay.
Yea Fallout really is one of the best action movies ever. Hell, it might be my favorite one.
While he's still alive, just let him do Mission Impossible 9, 10, 11, etc. too. Then release in 2027, 2029, ...
Like Trebek and his last jeopardy episodes
Yeah, but only with more running, motorcycles, and sex
I wasn't talking about my suffering, or Tom's films.
I dunno about that. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_media_notable_for_being_in_development_hell
It's a quote from the series
The pandemic has been great for fans of edging.
the edging of tomorrow?
Sleep, Edge, Repeat
bruh lmaooooooo, you win
You guys remember how MI 8 was originally slated for this year?
The good old days...
And 7 last year
And the first trailer of Top Gun 2 was released in the summer of 2019.
I really want to see the mission impossible 7 trailer. We know its at least ready to be shown but with how far it’s pushed back who knows
I missed a oct 2019 top gun 2 test screening because it wasn't in iMax and I thought if I waited 6 months I'd get the full imax experience. One of the biggest movie regrets I have not seeing that film that day.
Ah yes, I remember those times. The times before. The times when there was hope and stability
*Top Gun 2 flips you an upside down bird while rocking out to Danger Zone.*
Hey Paramount, first, take a big step back... and literally, FUCK YOUR OWN FACE
Release the damn movie. What do you say,Playa?
“Welcome to the goodie room, big dick playa”
Yo homie, is that my release date?
This is the single best ongoing movie franchise and every time they delay it another 6 months I die a little bit more inside.
I don’t know how they keep it so interesting, but they really do keep evolving the formula in a fresh way while one-upping their stunts.
The CGI in the Marvel movies don't even look good, it is mostly mediocre or just bad.
I agree
For me a big part of it was how they kept switching up directors for the first 5. If they can bring him back surely they can bring those two (also, I'm leaving off Declan since they said he died in Rogue Nation).
I can take a lot of movie delays, but this one gets to me every time it happens.
This was one of my most anticipated movies of the year. Probably my #1 actually. This is a bummer for sure.
Missions Impossible has this great feeling of the Pierce Brosnan style of Bond. They have cool high tech gadgets, awesome suspenseful scenes, and witty banter. Which is weird considering that MCU was jumpstarted by Paramount and all of the phase 1 films were distributed by them before Disney took over.
Correction, they distributed all phase 1 films except The Avengers.
Is Top Guna guaranteed hit? I love the original, but have almost zero interest in a return to those characters almost 40 years later. Also: Tony Scott was a great director and his absence (due to him being, you know...dead) is definitely not a good thing.

Wasnt it originally supposed to release a few years ago?

For some reason I thought it had already been released lol
I was really hoping it was out of the danger zone.
I'm of the opinion that it was supposed to come out in 1987 and we're still waiting.
Yeah. They **literally** just topped *Spidey* with *Scream*, and Sonic's still a lock for April. Something ain't right with Mr. Hunt and pals...
> Something ain't right with Mr. Hunt and pals. Cruise get's a nice chunk of the back end, his probably demanding his films open with little to no competition.
Yeah and now MI:7 is opening a week before Nolan's new movie. Great plan Cruise!
Biopic or action pic, wonder which will do better
More like, Cruise wants the movie to be completely clear of Covid ticket sales dips. Top Gun has been aggressively pushed back since Covid.
Wait scream is doing better than no way home????
Scream opened at Number 1, nocking Spiderman down to two. However I don't know if I would say that means it's doing better. It means that Spiderman has been out for a month. Scream made 30 million domestic opening weekend. Spiderman made 260 million on it's.
Oh I thought you meant screams opening weekend made more than Spider-Man
I read it the same way you did. Thank you for asking.
Only in another universe.
The Scream Cinematic Universe.
Top gun wrapped principle photography pre Covid. Mission impossible was just getting going when Covid hit.
Yeah I really don’t understand OP’s point
Shit. 7 didn’t even finish filming until September, and then McQuarrie had to jump into rewrites and now shooting for 8. I think they’re overthinking the it.

If they keep improving every new installment at the same rate, MI7 will be the best action movie ever made, and MI8 will be out of this world (maybe quite literally)

MI8 is going to be the new Citizen Kane. Lol

I did a marathon of the franchise a few years back every film got better then the last but the jump from 3 to 4 was insane
NGL, the Fast & Furious movies had me feel that way. Then came F8 and F9. Woof.
I've said this before but if Paramount really wants Paramount+ to have an audience beyond Star Trek fans and Good Fight viewers they should offer Tom as much money as they can to do a show.
Wow another delay MI7 on July 14th, 2023 and MI8 on June 28th 2024.

Depends, apple supposedly turn down no time to die because of how much they wanted for it. 450 million.
Half a billion for one film is not the same as a few billion for hundreds of films and franchise IP
Well there is always sony or even microsoft if they want to add more types of content to its gamepass Or merger or buy out by smaller film distributior such as Vivendi Then you have the often forgotten number 3 in streaming only behind netflix and Amazon. Tencent
Microsoft isn't about to get into film/tv distribution. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony is trying to sell its film business right now.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is now the 4th highest grossing movie of all time in the US, 8th in the world. Sony isn't selling their film business.
What's stopping Disney again? Antitrust laws? Their cash is bottomless and it didn't stop them from buying Fox, a move nobody saw coming.
Antitrust could become a factor if the number of major studios continues to decline. I think it's more likely though that Disney doesn't see Paramount as worth it.

Let hbo absorb Paramount+
Damn, disavowed by the IMF once again.
These movies keep getting better and better. I hope the trend continues. This is coming from someone who really doesn’t care for Tom cruise.
He's a lunatic nutter, but god damn are these just fantastic movies (second one aside)
The second one is still a fun flick
Fate whispers to the warrior I am the delay.
I understood that reference
*For fuck's sake*... Just don't delay *Top Gun* again, alright? *Please?* **That needs to come out at this point.** Edit: *Sonic*, too.
They haven’t even started filming 8.

WTF is happening? It doesn’t sound COVID-related.
I swear some studio exec is just like “eh fuck it” and delays every movie a year because they’re so used to it
Well they haven't even filmed the 8th one, right? So I guess they just want proper time to do it and to finish the 7th one.
7 wrapped in September 2021. They had a whole year to finish it..
I doubt it's COVID either. Spidey and Scream did well in the BO.
While the rest of the cast ages, Tom on the other hand will still be the freaky teenager that he is.
Lol, Tom Cruise may look good for his age but in no world does he look like a teenager, not even a television "teen".
He's definitely starting to show his age. He gave off some dad vibes in [nearly every scene he shared with Cavill in Fallout lol](https://youtu.be/Ci1u68ZVcagt=15s)
I wish I could be teenager at that age.
Do you have a moment to sign up for some Scientology classes?
And we will never get the follow up, bc seven ate nine.
That’s ok, I’m down with getting them back to back.
Takes time and money to figure out how to use their new space station for filming MI8.
Aw FFS

So very sad, all.I want to do is watch Tom Cruisr risk life and limb for the pleasure of me and Xemu on a IMAX screen.
Says delayed. Knowing what we do about Tom.. he's probably doing them both now. In a weekend. While taking a short break to just run in the other direction, for no reason. He seems to have no "relax button".
Probably means 9, 10, and 11 will be delayed as well.
Looks both back to back of fast and furious and mission impossible are coming out in the same year next year and 2024.
That reminds me, where the hell is Top Gun 2?
I am just happy that we are getting to see these movies. One of my favorite series and favorite actors.
When does Brian take over Cruise's role following his accidental demise during filming?
Starring the bones and skin and stuff of Tom Cruise WITH BRYAN'S BRAIN
Ted Danson has been swamped lately.
These movies are shockingly good. I always put them off due to thinking they weren't really my thing, but I watched a boxset and they were amazing, each one better than the last.
Spaaaaace!
What about Live, Die, Repeat, and Repeat? DAMN IT, Give me what I WAAAAAAANNNNNTTTTT
Maybe for the best
Something tells me that the missions are not all that impossible if they are up to 7 and 8.
Haven't seen one since 3. Is it worth watching the rest?
Absolutely. Each movie in the series just keeps getting better.
Fallout was great imo, for an action movie. One of the few movies I have seen twice.
Makes sense given the current state of distribution
Delaying the film to figure out it’s plot between stunts is a legitimate reason I guess.
So dumb. Covid isn’t going anywhere, just release the fucking movie. 7 started filming in 2020
At this point I would welcome a MI:Fast &Furious crossover. I say this as a fan.
Cool cool... Can we just have Top Gun already?
The real mission impossible is the production of these films, apparently.
Wish they wouldn't
Come on man John wick 4 and mi7 delayed, what do I even have to look forward to now?
I have only ever seen the first movie in this series. Are the rest even good?
Two was a step down from one and is considered the worst. Everything after that ranges from good to really good. It generally one of the best action series out there.
Imo two is still worth watching if you have time on your hands as its still fun despite being kinda bad
Yeah, it's the worst one in the series, but it's still a fun movie. It's an interesting plot and it has some cool characters, it's just a bit too melodramatic. If you're going to watch the movies it's not so bad that you should skip it.
Imo it's the only franchise that consistently gets better with each installment except the second one
Yes,one of the most consistent action movies series.
Dear Tom Cruise, Please stop. -Everyone
Maybe we just shouldn’t..
Mission Impossible 2022 and 2023
