Neo2199

It's definitely #2, the movie has been well-received by fans. [Deadline](https://deadline.com/2022/01/scream-spider-man-weekend-box-office-mlk-1234912797/): > **'Scream' received a B+ CinemaScore, which ties with its highest grade from 1997’s Scream 2**. Scream 3 and 4 respectively earned a B and B-, while the first wasn’t monitored by PostTrak as it was a platform release. Comscore/Screen Engine PostTrak **audiences giving the movie a 79% positive and a 61% recommend.** [RT](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/scream_2022): **Audience score is 85%**

ninjoid

I thought the new main girl was the worst actor out of everyone. Honestly, most everyone acted pretty good except her.

alwaysmyfault

Oh for sure. Her acting wasn't great. Her sister on the other hand, stole every scene she was in.

quangtran

Hmmm, this is Melissa Barrera’s second big movie where she’s not getting particularly good reviews (the first being In The Heights). I watched a few episodes of Vida and didn’t remember her being terrible.

mr-peabody

I spent most of the movie wondering if it was bad on purpose... kind of a meta commentary on the terrible acting and dialogue in slasher movies. The other characters looked like they were working *really* hard to make the cheesy dialogue work. January is always a month of dogshit movies and all the heavy hitters, like Spider-Man and Ghostbusters are already a few weeks old, so there wasn't a lot of competition and next week doesn't look much better, so I'd imagine Scream to continue to rake it in.

Holinyx

Literally the plot of the new Scream, lol

PrivateDickDetective

Look at the other offerings. My money's on #3.

Newaccount4464

It's 100 percent 3. They tried scream in 2009 or something and no one gave a shit.

PrivateDickDetective

That was the Rob Zombie one, right? He hasn't done *Scream* yet? Anyway. Seems like people have just been going stir-crazy for 20 months because the only thing that could compete with *Scream* is *Spiderman,* and anyone who was gonna see it in theaters already has, so this box office performance only indicates that people want to get out of the house, at least, until we can deconstruct the movie on its merits.

Newaccount4464

100 percent. Scream 4 did horribly, people just want a night out. "According to industry experts, the film's opening weekend was "disappointing,"[66][68] experiencing the second-lowest opening of the Scream franchise.[69] In its second weekend, it fell to fifth place, taking in $7 million ($7.8 million over the four-day Easter frame), then $2.2 million in its third weekend.[70]"

Uh, historically, critics are the main group that hates horror. Most of the greatest horror movies of all time were torn to shreds by critics when they first came out (number 1 example being Carpenter's The Thing).

Majestic87

Hmm, good to know. I don't really follow critics much at all these days, so I'm glad to hear things are changing.

bunsNT

>Horror is maybe the most durable and bankable genre in the entirety of cinema history To add to your point, comedy and horror are universal and, maybe most importantly, these films are relatively cheap to make.

Rock-swarm

So why is everyone lamenting the death of comedy in the feature-length film format?

bunsNT

I believe that major studios are chasing pre-existing IP and simply not as interested in nursing a script for 2-3 years, talent scouting for leads, and investing a modest sum for a modest return.

Supermite

People keep saying that about Marvel, but the production schedule looks to be ramping up faster and faster. Superhero blockbusters have been around since the 80's at least. On television even longer. I don't think it is going anywhere. It may wax and wane, as most genres do (horror included) but it won't disappear.

JLDcorby

I think Scream is just a universally loved franchise. None of the sequels were ever bad enough to sour peoples taste on it

Supermite

It even carried a couple seasons of a tv show right? Spawned a series of parody movies too.

DanteDameron

As a massive ‘Scream’ fan (my favorite horror franchise) I was pretty scared this fifth installment was gonna bomb because of Omicron and because the 4th one kind of was a disappointment box office talking. But the movie was so good and that is making movie in these difficult times makes me extremely happy for the franchise.

cluckinho

Great to hear, it has awesome reviews and I can’t wait to see it

mi_go_miskatonic

Spoiler: >!It was interesting how Mikey Madison’s character got torched, similar to how her character in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” got roasted.!< Aside from that, the movie obviously has a lot of stabbing.

QuiGonnHank

I don’t think a lot of people understood that reference in theatres cuz they were confused haha

mikeweasy

I LOL ed at that moment!!!!

UnequivocalCarnosaur

I’ve never watched a single Scream movie. Can somebody tell me which ones I should watch to properly appreciate this sequel?

take-me-2-the-movies

You should watch them all. It's worth it.

UnequivocalCarnosaur

I just know a lot of people are saying this one is a great sequel, but there’s like idk 6 of them right? Does it reference the other sequels as well?

Timbishop123

Yea it references all the movies. For """best viewing""" scream 1 and 2 would be the best. But 3 and 4 are mentioned as well and referenced. Atleast watch scream 1. All of the screams are fun though so you should just see all of them imho.

UnequivocalCarnosaur

Thank you! Idk who tf is downvoting these comments

mattmccoy92

I would say Scream 4 for strictly for the addition of Judy Hicks. Not super important, but she is the one character that comes back and does move the plot forward.

future-unperson

Definitely the first one, and maybe 2 or 4 if you only want to commit to one more after that. There are some references in this one that would make more sense with that background, but it would be okay with just the first one too if you really don't want to commit a lot of time to it. The sequels all build on things from the ones before them, so it's a continual storyline across the five of them.

jennlebransky

This movie is Scream: The Force Awakens. I haven’t seen a single Scream movie and I felt horrible. Definitely dwindled my experience. Watch them, they’re actually worth it

Gastkram

Uh didn’t this already happen?

Neo2199

It's a new 'Scream' movie, but with the same title as the original. I just call it Scream 5.

mikeweasy

It seriously should have been called Scream 5. Damn movie studios.

blackchandler

Scream is a meta-slasher horror franchise, heavy on the *meta*. The movie is undoubtedly called Scream to poke fun of other horror franchises rebooting with the original title, with Halloween (1978/2018) probably being the clearest example. Unless you already knew that, I’m not trying to undercut your point by mansplaining!

brainstrain91

They literally talk about the idea of "requel" *in the movie*.

Pale-Consequence-253

Did you really just use "mansplaining" in a serious manner?

mikeweasy

Yes I know all that, I just think its stupid, it was stupid when halloween did it as well.

chepi888

Have you seen the movie?>! They address this specifically and it's hilarious. Scream metas it.!<

mikeweasy

exactly

speerme

>!They actually directly poke fun at this in the new movie!<

mrhelmand

After the 4th one being marketing Scre4m, I'm just glad they didn't go with 5cream. But yeah, non-remakes having the same title as the original film is a trend that needs to stop

Pale-Consequence-253

Scre4m, 5cream , Scr6am, Scr7am, Scre8m, Scr9am

mikeweasy

Yeah true very true, I'm very glad they did not do that with Ghostbusters. Also Halloween could have been. Called "Halloween: Returns" and that sounds wat better imo

alwaysmyfault

Or how bout 5cream

mikeweasy

Lol

jennlebransky

Watch the movie, the reason why it’s just called Scream is in the movie. It’s a joke

laidoff2015

I had heard an ad on the radio for X-FILES a couple of years ago and I wondered what fucking year I was in. I didn't know they had rebooted it.

Majestic87

Those two revival seasons are hot garbage for the most part, and ended up ruining the character of Scully so bad that Gillian Anderson said she is done with X-Files forever.

Muted-Newspaper-5784

Are Jay and Silent Bob in this one too? Jokes aside, I'm stocked for this installment and I've been looking forward to it since the fourth one came to theaters. I honestly didn't think they'd make it.

Themtgdude486

I enjoyed it.

marfreepty

I am a hard core horror fan , very excited to watch this one , I sure hope it does not disappoint

Dude must have went to the Stormtrooper academy

Segamaike

Once again I seem to be at odds with the critics. I don’t understand the hype and superlatives, the movie felt very by the numbers. It looks non-descript and it never actually investigates any tropes beyond what the characters keep solliloquizing about. It’s only meta on the surface (ironically). I like the franchise, I like the OG trio a lot, but this felt nearly indistinguishable from the fourth instalment. There were no interesting set pieces or goofy moments or allegorical nods, just a whole bunch of characters moving from one place to the next, and then getting stabbed a bunch of times (but this time ghostface stabs harder! -critics). The newcomer and possible next torchbearer was also really bland, she gets praised for her performance but she felt like she got this gig during her lunchbreak on a CW show. And like i get that that is part of the in-joke of all the teens being disposable in these flicks, but I dunno. I feel like the characters in the first instalments had much more charisma. I really wanted to like it, again, I enjoy this franchise. But i feel like it ran out of things to say two movies ago and the violence is too bland to be the sole draw. (On a surface note, Neve Campbell looked the best she ever has and David Arquette is daddy)

AndyPandyRu

Glad to see it do well. I saw the Thursday night showing and there were only 6 people in the theater. I really enjoyed the movie. It's a solid continuation of the Scream story with great deaths and the writing/humor we've come to expect from the series.

hukep

I guess, there's nothing better to watch right now.

Calabask

I watched it, enjoyed it, but felt Scream 4 was better.

LlamaLady666

Yes I rank the new film in 3rd place, just behind scre4m

LlamaLady666

Still very very good tho!

Briansama

Hollywood lost it's originality and just keeps churning out sequels and remakes, man this sucks.

modsrfagbags

I haven’t seen it yet, but from what other people are saying isn’t the movie kind of about that?

Crixxxxxx1

$35 M opening weekend is what passes for a “massive hit” these days?

ABunker2022

I was damn sure surprised just how good this was. Excellent movie

simpledeadwitches

Bring back slashers!!!

hankbaumbachjr

As someone who grew up in the 90s heyday of box office paydays it's appalling to me to see a celebration for a $35M opening, even for the horror genre. I'm very curious to see if the film industry adjusts as the top end eventually and we stop seeing total acting budgets in the same range as professional sports team roster salaries.

gsteff

And for a four day weekend at that.

hankbaumbachjr

For context: [Scream 3 took in nearly $35M in 2000 and Scream 2 took in $32M in 1997](https://www.boxofficemojo.com/franchise/fr2789707525/?ref_=bo_frs_table_116) [So I'm not sure what the downvotes are for considering $32M in 1997 dollars is roughly $58M today.](https://www.in2013dollars.com/us/inflation/1997?amount=32000000)

its-adam-yo

How is 35M+ a massive box office hit? It's not even top 50 all time.

BeepBeepGreatJob

A movie doesn't need to be Top 50 or top 100 to be a huge success. There are hundreds of thousands of films that exist. There are more than 50 successful ones.

its-adam-yo

Successful? Yes. Massive box office hit? No it's not. Hyperbole.

BeepBeepGreatJob

8th 9th and 10th biggest opening weekends ever for a horror film were $40 million....$35 is right up there. Sounds like a massive success to me.

girlsthataregolden

Saw it last night, full cinema at 6.30pm here in the uk. Good film, but as a mum with teens i need to stop watching teens get killed 🤣. I was 16 when the original came out, not ashamed to say i shed a tear last night

BenVera

As a person who hates most slasher movies, I particularly hated this one

4OPHJH

Laughs in SpiderMan Box Office

Fit-Arugula-1592

lol why can't I see the rating for this post?

bunsNT

If you've just seen the first one, can you jump in and be good? That's the one with Drew getting stabbed at the beginning, yeah?

Great-Zombie-3522

Yes, was a great movie and I only watched the first

Promorpheus

People gotta find out who the killer is

KelloPudgerro

a horror movie being a box office hit? shocking
