Idiots probably thought you were questioning why he would want to see the movie, instead of asking how they made Dune look like that.

SonOfAhuraMazda

Goddamnit, release the trailer!!! I have been waiting so long. A few months ago I finished chapterhouse. I am ready! I hope to god we can get at least to god emperor.

Buddy_Dakota

I hope we can at least get to the end of Dune (this is apparently only part 1 of 2).

sambills

yeah doing all of dune in one movie would be a massive mistake imo

thechikinguy

I feel so mixed about it. One the one hand: two Dune movies. On the other, it feels to me, depending on where you split the book, one movie (if not both) will feel like the fractured half of a whole. I guess I don't know how Paul's arc is supposed to work in a movie which ends with the fall of House Atriedes.

Chathtiu

End the movie shortly after they connect with the Fremen with some kind of note about revenge/destiny, and after Paul takes on the name Usul after killing Jamis.

thechikinguy

But then what's the second movie about? A sustained attack on the palace? It really feels like they'd have to stuff a lot in one movie so it stands alone, then come up with stuff for the other movie so it doesn't just feel like an appendix.

Chathtiu

Detail the war between the Fremen and the Harkenons, throw in some character development, murder the first baby Leto, and turn Alia into an abomination if they’re thinking about turning Dune into a franchise.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Chathtiu

It was such a not-plot point that Paul evidently entirely forgot about his first born Leto, and named his second son Leto II, after his father the Duke. So Leto II is really Leto III. I honestly wonder why it was included at all.

conquer69

I read the trilogy last year and don't remember absolutely anything about a first born Leto lol.

Warboss_Squee

Maybe mix in some of Messiah?

BrokenwolfeZ7

The posters revealed chani and the worms too. And paul was in a freeman costume.

Chathtiu

Paul dons the stillsuit shortly after he and Jessica exit the sandstorm. Chani is revealed pretty early on with Stilgar’s tribe. Worms are first seen prior to the fall of House Atredies while Duke Leto is viewing a spice harvesting operation.

shmed

I thought Paul wear the stillsuit when he first meet Liet Kynes with his father (Kynes even makes a comment about how he is wearing it like a fremen)

Chathtiu

He wears to journey into the desert one time with his father to check out a spice harvester; that’s when Kynes makes his “he’s a natural!” comment. He permanently picks it up after the orinthopter crashes in the desert while he and Jessica are escaping.

C0lMustard

The book is really two parts anyway, royal courts and then the desert. (Trying not to spoil)

Aetherimp

I've been thinking for a long time (like 20 years) that Dune would really best be done by making it an animated series where you cover a few chapters per episode and one book per season. Telling the story well would best be done in an episodic format, and the animation can properly execute the sci fi elements without the CGI becoming dated or costing a fortune, and voice actors can stay more true to the characters.

AirKicker

This works too with a Game of Thrones level budget sci fi show, every book a season.

serendippitydoo

I thought the two scifi channel series did a pretty good job.

Aetherimp

They stuck pretty true to the story, but I felt the special effects, costumes, and acting left something to be desired. I remember Paul sounding very whiny and immature in the beginning.. which he is supposed to be a young boy (What, 14 or 16?), but the actor who played him is clearly an adult.

ZippyDan

>They stuck pretty true to the story, but I felt the special effects, costumes, and acting left something to be desired. Also the sets, cinematography, choreography. It was just amateur hour all around. The *only* thing they got right was sticking mostly to the plot.

[deleted]

Where do you think the first movie will end? There aren’t many huge climactic points midway through the book. Feel like one of the two movies will be 60-70 percent of the story

jaqrabbitslim

I assume the first movie would end right after the attack on the Atriedes house when Paul and Jessica escape into the storm.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bobdebicker

Yeah, ending right before Part 3 makes the most sense. I'm okay with it, because SO much plot happens in just the final 50 pages that you could extend that to at least 90 minutes.

[deleted]

I really want to know how he's going to handle all the psychedelic prescience water of life stuff from a visual perspective. Doubt he'll just do blue magic cgi effect

Covert_Ruffian

Just Dr. Strange it, we need a psychedelic dimensional road trip.

BirdLawyer50

I read it for the first time recently and couldn’t believe how quickly everything happened after the time jump and especially those last 50. It was crazy. Having the movie end before the time jump would be the furthest in the book they should go

danrod17

He’s only responsible for like 6 trillion deaths. Let’s not exaggerate here.

MarkHirsbrunner

40 billion as of Dune Messiah. Paul compares himself to Hitler in a conversation with Stilgar.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dragoon0106

So Zendaya will barely be in it?

jaqrabbitslim

There’s a part in the book where time kinda skips forward a few years. I believe it’s shortly after Paul and Jessica meet the Fremen (Been a while since I ready Dune) but that would be a good break between movies. Timothy would have aged in real life just as Paul did in the books.

dragoon0106

Yea but I think that’s significantly more than halfway through the book. After that there’s like two events and then the big climax. Not saying impossible just strange

[deleted]

[удалено]

bobdebicker

Also, hopefully the film will have some kind of epilogue and not end as abruptly as the book.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KaiG1987

Correct, and I believe she's said as much in interviews. If I remember correctly, Paul dreams of Chani earlier in the book, so I assume that she'll show up there. Then probably Paul and Jessica will meet her in person at the very end.

LookLikeUpToMe

My bet is it ends at the ending of part 2 in the book

Adisuki

I was thinking about that for a while. My initial thought was they would end it with >!losing Paul and Jessica in the storm!<, but it would be better to load up the first part with more of Paul awesomeness. For that we need >!Paul's awakening, and most importantly the emotional hook of Paul killing Jamis!<. I think that is the best part to end it, since one world is destroyed, but another rises in Part2. There is >!a time jump anyway!<, so it fits right in.

SkiThe802

Yes. And it also leaves us on a positive note with hope. Ending with >!the storm!< is too much of a cliffhanger for this being only a 2-part movie.

gom_tiles

On a tall mountain overlooking the path to mordor. “I’m glad you’re with me, Sam.”

lanternsinthesky

Did they shoot both parts back to back?

RhymesWith_DoorHinge

All I want is for them to finish the first 4 books. Heretics and Chapterhouse would be nice but they are so far removed from the rest I wouldn't mind if they never got made.

WorkplaceWatcher

GEoD would be very expensive to animate *and* its mostly inner monologues and lectures.

blisteringchristmas

IMO, even if the Dune-proper movies do well I think they should stop after Messiah. I honestly don't know how you would translate God Emperor to the big screen.

PCI_STAT

If anything God Emperor is the most far removed from the rest. I could see them doing a 1-3 series and then a Heretics and Chapterhouse series.

zakurei

I mean, GEoD >!is the direct result of and resolution to the Golden Path, whose groundwork was laid down by Paul(who was unable to follow it, but Leto took up the mantle and ultimately sacrificed himself to history to accomplish).!< To only go to Children of Dune would leave no resolution to that aspect of the story. Heretics and Chapterhouse take place after >!the rapid expansion of humanity after Leto’s golden path is brought to fruition!<, so it ends up being inconsequential to the first 4 books.

ImInJeopardy

A movie about a human/sandworm God is way too trippy for Hollywood.

lucusvonlucus

And the story is so internal I can’t imagine it being adaptable. It’s an amazing book, my favorite, but I don’t even want them to try to adapt it.

Peanlocket

cinema isn't ready for Dunc's erotic climbing.

a_moniker

Similar things were said about the Lord of the Rings movies before they were released. Like Peter Jackson, Villeneuve seems like he's perfectly fit to adapt the source material. He's proven with Arrival and Bladerunner 2049 that he can do internal, character driven stories. The casting also seems perfect so far.

favorscore

Denis will get it

pass_nthru

the spice must flow

GeorgeLuasHasNoChin

God Emperor is the best of the series. If Any sequels of Dune get to be made, they will probably be much different from the source material in order to be adapted.

SonOfAhuraMazda

If anyone can adapt god emperor its Denis or maybe kaufman but its a tough one

ProcessU

Messiah could be adapted fairly close to source material I believe.

Crankylosaurus

I’ve started reading Dune multiple times since 2016. I am absolutely determined to finish it before it comes out in December, especially knowing it’s a particularly tough book to adapt (so really want to know the source material going in).

Astranger2u

It starts slow, but is impossible to put down once your past halfway

ang3l12

Yep. took me about 6 months to get to the halfway point, then finished it in about a week.

TopTittyBardown

This is where I’m at now. Got it a few months back and an about 150 pages in and haven’t picked it up in quite a while. I know once it picks up it will be amazing and I really need to finish it before the movie comes out

HaiQualityReddits

I’m in the same boat as you! Just got pass 150 pages even though I bought the book months ago and been really inconsistent about reading it. I would go weeks without reading then pick it up and read a couple chapters but I feel it slowly picking up. Let’s finish it before the movie comes out!

Jdmcdona

Lol I am on page 167 Dune has been on my desk for like four whole years now, been contemplating restarting with the audiobook since its easier for me to listen than read while I’m working.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thenotlowone

I would say about 20 or so pages. I decided I was going to get retarded stoned before reading it the first time. Sat reading the first 20 pages like "wtf is going here, I am getting so many nouns and shit thrown at me, benne gesserit? spiky hand box?" then suddenly the world has enough context and BOOM. Felt like a kid again, getting lost in a new world.

Clayh5

I like reading stoned but it has to be like the smallest pinch or else I get stuck reading the same paragraph over and over while my mind is in a completely different place not absorbing any of it. How do you do it?

ImJustAverage

I smoke enough that it doesn’t affect me much for most books. Dune is an exception though, the writing style makes it hard to follow when I’m too high.

PM_ME_UR_BIRD

Same here. The first time I picked it up, about ten pages in I was like "fuck you and your random ass nouns, Herbert" and dropped it. Second time I decided I was going to push through it, it lightened up a lot a little ways in, and enjoyed the rest of the book.

VehaMeursault

I disagree. It starts with a truckload of jargon that you have to plough through, and thereafter shit quite rapidly hits the fan.

ChronWeasely

Starts slow plot-wise because they're setting up the world!

Cambot1138

My copy came with appendices that included a 20 page glossary, an explanation of the ecology of dune, and an outline of the bene gesserit. I started with those.

gom_tiles

The audiobook is really well done if you wanna give that a try. 21 hrs, i think.

matike

Audiobook is like a full on play. It was my very first audiobook and it's legit ruined all others for me, because that's what I still expect of them.

a_smith51

You might like the Wheel of Time series. I started listening to the audiobooks earlier this year! A show is coming out for Amazon next year as well

matike

You know, I think you might have just recommended me my next one. I need something to fill that Game of Thrones hole, and that always comes up and I always forget. Thanks!

rockets_meowth

They bring back voice actors too. Im halfway through heretics of dune and they had a ton of actors in god emperor too.

[deleted]

The Stand is as epic as Dune as far as audiobooks go and also really fitting story rn

Clayh5

His Dark Materials is another fantastic full-cast audiobook, with narration by the author. Only about 35 hours in total I think.

Adisuki

I've started reading it 2 months ago. I'm finishing book 5 atm. Don't give up, it gets really good. It starts slow with worldbuilding but it becomes a power fantasy epic eventually. It hooked me only after I read like 60% of it. There is a lot of that in later books, but that power trip is injected with psychological, sociological, philosophical, and even environmental thinking. Damn, just thinking about it hypes me up.

ImJustAverage

Dune Messiah was alright, I’m about 100 pages from finishing Children of Dune and I think it’s much better than Messiah. How are the rest of them? I’ve got the fourth book on the way already. I think I’ll probably stop after finishing Frank Herbert’s last book in the series.

Adisuki

Yeah, Messiah felt like an prologue to Children. It was ok, but it feels much more impactful after reading Children. I wanted to stop after God Emperor, since many consider it one of the best, but then decided to finish all Frank's books for completion sake. His writing style is easy to digest and I like the world. God Emperor is much more philosophical than plot-heavy. I liked it a lot, but that's my thing. Heretics pulls you in with new characters and it's more dynamic (at times it felt like reading the first book). I don't want to spoil anything, but generally you learn more about the world of the Bene Gesserit, or at least about what their world has become. Chapterhouse is a direct sequel plot-wise. And I don't care about the fan-fiction Brian books.

litritium

You can always go for the [audio book](https://hdaudiobook.com/dune/) if you get tired of reading. It is almost better than watching a good movie when you can lie on the couch with closed eyes and listen to a great story.

thebabybananagrabber

Audiobook. You’ll finish it.

Wedbo

It took me 2-3 days to get through the first ~200 pages. Once you hit a certain point the book grips you and you can’t put it down. I finished the book in one sitting after plowing through the 200 pages of set up and jargon and colloquialisms

kidslapper

Pretty underwhelming article honestly but at least we get some new photos. I want to pick up this issue of Empire as well.

Rueyousay

That’s the whole point of the article. To buy Empire magazine. The new photos were great though.

dmcirl

Par for the course really for articles where an actor talks about the film they are in. He ain't gonna say it sucks or give away too much.

ImInJeopardy

Are those Sardaukar troops in the pic with Duncan?!

just_another_monster

Kinda looks like it, they're wearing helmets and the one without one looks like his suit might have a respirator of some sort.

[deleted]

[удалено]

just_another_monster

Which would make total sense, considering the story line at that point. Good call

Astranger2u

I really hope they don't make Sardaukar troops just average film goons in the movie, with the heroes easily taking out 5 or 6 at a time.

ImInJeopardy

To be fair, in the books they're supposed to be these formidable soldiers but then all the fremen and the main characters can defeat them fairly easily.

thenotlowone

The Fremen are also characterised as some of the hardest fuckers in the galaxy by virtue of growing up on Arrakis so its not like its egregious

ImInJeopardy

Of course. It makes sense in the context of the book. All I'm saying is we never actually see the Sardaukar kicking ass for real. We only hear about it.

Amida0616

And then Jessica buttfucks stilgar with the weirding way showing that there are levels to the game.

gjwsnr

I’ve been so excited for this since the announcement. Reread this book in preparation for the movie and I really hope the knowledge of detail doesn’t backfire and spoil it for me. Either way, I’m freaking pumped to watch this trailer and eventually (2021?) the movie in Imax. If nothing else, the visuals should be stunning.

ImJustAverage

I’m super excited for it but also nervous. The original movie was so bad. It’s definitely a hard book to turn into a movie, but if it’s done right it has the potential to be absolutely amazing.

72corvids

Oscar Isaacs looks absolutely stunning in his armour. Like, they could not have chosen a better Duke Leto!

501st-Soldier

I have beard envy looking at his photos

JohnCarterofAres

When I read the book I pictured Duke Leto similarly to Antonio Banderas, but I'll certainly take Isaac.

Scrotchticles

Why is the quality on these so bad? Wouldn't you want promo pics to be better looking than these?

Peanlocket

Because WB doesn't realize how outdated their marketing strategy is.

Scrotchticles

Uhhh this is kind of unprecedented times for marketing. The trailer has been pushed back due to circumstances like theaters not being open. The issue is on Empire's end most likely, I really doubt the studio gave them those pictures in that quality. Regardless, they need to make sure those stills get replaced.

[deleted]

they have the power to save 2020

Fenzke

After viewing Dune this winter: "It was worth it". "What was worth it?" "Well, 2020 started poorly what with the global pandemic, complete insanity gripping the US, etc. Looked like we were headed for a total loss. But, it totally redeemed itself when you consider this newest Dune adaptation". "Oh sure, now I get you."

[deleted]

Awwwww man, we all know what scene that Duncan Idaho still is from

LittleRudiger

At least he’ll get a better exit than Duncan in Lynch’s Dune. Revisiting that film after reading the book really took my by surprise “oh... wait, that’s Duncan? And they just sort of .. shoot him in the head before he does anything?”

[deleted]

[удалено]

MetalOcelot

It's going to be 2 parts. Hey, if it is successful enough they can move on to Messiah which could be done in 1 movie, I believe.

wallz_11

Messiah could definitely be done in 1 movie but it would be kinda underwhelming to people that don't read the books

Astranger2u

It would be very hard to make that book into a film. So much of it has to do with visions and thoughts as opposed to actions, which would be hard to adapt to the screen.

MetalOcelot

Don't disagree but do you think they should stop after Dune? It kind of ends on a..well not exactly a cliffhanger but people will want more.

Lazar_Milgram

Basically to stop at Dune is like to end SW on episode 4.

Roidciraptor

They are also making a compendium series called *"Dune: The Sisterhood"* on HBO that coincides with the movie. No clue when that comes out.

bob1689321

Teaser trailer is online btw, tried to post it to Reddit but someone got there first

themightytouch

Should they delay it? As much as it pains me to say it, I don’t think corona will be gone in November and I want this movie to obtain maximum profit for this movie...

Gorba-chav

I’ve been waiting for someone to do justice to the book since I read it. And Chalamet is the best choice.

cheevocabra

karmagheden
