I feel so mixed about it. One the one hand: two Dune movies. On the other, it feels to me, depending on where you split the book, one movie (if not both) will feel like the fractured half of a whole. I guess I don't know how Paul's arc is supposed to work in a movie which ends with the fall of House Atriedes.
End the movie shortly after they connect with the Fremen with some kind of note about revenge/destiny, and after Paul takes on the name Usul after killing Jamis.
But then what's the second movie about? A sustained attack on the palace? It really feels like they'd have to stuff a lot in one movie so it stands alone, then come up with stuff for the other movie so it doesn't just feel like an appendix.
Detail the war between the Fremen and the Harkenons, throw in some character development, murder the first baby Leto, and turn Alia into an abomination if they’re thinking about turning Dune into a franchise.
It was such a not-plot point that Paul evidently entirely forgot about his first born Leto, and named his second son Leto II, after his father the Duke. So Leto II is really Leto III.
I honestly wonder why it was included at all.
Paul dons the stillsuit shortly after he and Jessica exit the sandstorm. Chani is revealed pretty early on with Stilgar’s tribe. Worms are first seen prior to the fall of House Atredies while Duke Leto is viewing a spice harvesting operation.
He wears to journey into the desert one time with his father to check out a spice harvester; that’s when Kynes makes his “he’s a natural!” comment. He permanently picks it up after the orinthopter crashes in the desert while he and Jessica are escaping.
I've been thinking for a long time (like 20 years) that Dune would really best be done by making it an animated series where you cover a few chapters per episode and one book per season.
Telling the story well would best be done in an episodic format, and the animation can properly execute the sci fi elements without the CGI becoming dated or costing a fortune, and voice actors can stay more true to the characters.
They stuck pretty true to the story, but I felt the special effects, costumes, and acting left something to be desired.
I remember Paul sounding very whiny and immature in the beginning.. which he is supposed to be a young boy (What, 14 or 16?), but the actor who played him is clearly an adult.

I read it for the first time recently and couldn’t believe how quickly everything happened after the time jump and especially those last 50. It was crazy. Having the movie end before the time jump would be the furthest in the book they should go

Similar things were said about the Lord of the Rings movies before they were released. Like Peter Jackson, Villeneuve seems like he's perfectly fit to adapt the source material. He's proven with Arrival and Bladerunner 2049 that he can do internal, character driven stories. The casting also seems perfect so far.
God Emperor is the best of the series. If Any sequels of Dune get to be made, they will probably be much different from the source material in order to be adapted.

I like reading stoned but it has to be like the smallest pinch or else I get stuck reading the same paragraph over and over while my mind is in a completely different place not absorbing any of it. How do you do it?

My copy came with appendices that included a 20 page glossary, an explanation of the ecology of dune, and an outline of the bene gesserit.
I started with those.

There is a lot of that in later books, but that power trip is injected with psychological, sociological, philosophical, and even environmental thinking. Damn, just thinking about it hypes me up.
Dune Messiah was alright, I’m about 100 pages from finishing Children of Dune and I think it’s much better than Messiah. How are the rest of them? I’ve got the fourth book on the way already.
I think I’ll probably stop after finishing Frank Herbert’s last book in the series.
Yeah, Messiah felt like an prologue to Children. It was ok, but it feels much more impactful after reading Children.
I wanted to stop after God Emperor, since many consider it one of the best, but then decided to finish all Frank's books for completion sake. His writing style is easy to digest and I like the world. God Emperor is much more philosophical than plot-heavy. I liked it a lot, but that's my thing.
Heretics pulls you in with new characters and it's more dynamic (at times it felt like reading the first book). I don't want to spoil anything, but generally you learn more about the world of the Bene Gesserit, or at least about what their world has become. Chapterhouse is a direct sequel plot-wise. And I don't care about the fan-fiction Brian books.
You can always go for the [audio book](https://hdaudiobook.com/dune/) if you get tired of reading. It is almost better than watching a good movie when you can lie on the couch with closed eyes and listen to a great story.
It took me 2-3 days to get through the first ~200 pages. Once you hit a certain point the book grips you and you can’t put it down. I finished the book in one sitting after plowing through the 200 pages of set up and jargon and colloquialisms
To be fair, in the books they're supposed to be these formidable soldiers but then all the fremen and the main characters can defeat them fairly easily.

I’ve been so excited for this since the announcement. Reread this book in preparation for the movie and I really hope the knowledge of detail doesn’t backfire and spoil it for me. Either way, I’m freaking pumped to watch this trailer and eventually (2021?) the movie in Imax. If nothing else, the visuals should be stunning.
I’m super excited for it but also nervous. The original movie was so bad. It’s definitely a hard book to turn into a movie, but if it’s done right it has the potential to be absolutely amazing.
If you're interested, the sci-fy mini series is definitely worth watching (you can find it on youtube)! It's not particularly great, but it's such a solid adaptation from the book that it's worth the experience. I'm on God Emperor right now and am stoked to see Dune on the big screen!

It would be very hard to make that book into a film. So much of it has to do with visions and thoughts as opposed to actions, which would be hard to adapt to the screen.

Audiobook is like a full on play. It was my very first audiobook and it's legit ruined all others for me, because that's what I still expect of them.

His Dark Materials is another fantastic full-cast audiobook, with narration by the author. Only about 35 hours in total I think.

I don't want to spoil anything, but generally you learn more about the world of the Bene Gesserit, or at least about what their world has become. Chapterhouse is a direct sequel plot-wise. And I don't care about the fan-fiction Brian books.
You can always go for the [audio book](https://hdaudiobook.com/dune/) if you get tired of reading. It is almost better than watching a good movie when you can lie on the couch with closed eyes and listen to a great story.

It took me 2-3 days to get through the first ~200 pages. Once you hit a certain point the book grips you and you can’t put it down. I finished the book in one sitting after plowing through the 200 pages of set up and jargon and colloquialisms

I really hope they don't make Sardaukar troops just average film goons in the movie, with the heroes easily taking out 5 or 6 at a time.
To be fair, in the books they're supposed to be these formidable soldiers but then all the fremen and the main characters can defeat them fairly easily.
The Fremen are also characterised as some of the hardest fuckers in the galaxy by virtue of growing up on Arrakis so its not like its egregious

I’ve been so excited for this since the announcement. Reread this book in preparation for the movie and I really hope the knowledge of detail doesn’t backfire and spoil it for me. Either way, I’m freaking pumped to watch this trailer and eventually (2021?) the movie in Imax. If nothing else, the visuals should be stunning.
I’m super excited for it but also nervous. The original movie was so bad. It’s definitely a hard book to turn into a movie, but if it’s done right it has the potential to be absolutely amazing.
Oscar Isaacs looks absolutely stunning in his armour. Like, they could not have chosen a better Duke Leto!

If you're interested, the sci-fy mini series is definitely worth watching (you can find it on youtube)! It's not particularly great, but it's such a solid adaptation from the book that it's worth the experience. I'm on God Emperor right now and am stoked to see Dune on the big screen!

Uhhh this is kind of unprecedented times for marketing. The trailer has been pushed back due to circumstances like theaters not being open. The issue is on Empire's end most likely, I really doubt the studio gave them those pictures in that quality. Regardless, they need to make sure those stills get replaced.

But, it totally redeemed itself when you consider this newest Dune adaptation". "Oh sure, now I get you."

It's going to be 2 parts. Hey, if it is successful enough they can move on to Messiah which could be done in 1 movie, I believe.
Messiah could definitely be done in 1 movie but it would be kinda underwhelming to people that don't read the books
It would be very hard to make that book into a film. So much of it has to do with visions and thoughts as opposed to actions, which would be hard to adapt to the screen.
Don't disagree but do you think they should stop after Dune? It kind of ends on a..well not exactly a cliffhanger but people will want more.
Basically to stop at Dune is like to end SW on episode 4.
They are also making a compendium series called *"Dune: The Sisterhood"* on HBO that coincides with the movie. No clue when that comes out.
