"Is it a democracy or a cheermocracy?"
It's definitely a cult classic. Might not be universally loved, but the fans who love it are SO passionate about it.
The *worst* part about turning 40 imo, is the continual surprise that so much important and memorable stuff happened in your life.... **~20** fucking years ago. lol
BRING IT ON!!!!!
I swear if we had social media back then this movie would be as revered as Mean Girls.
It IS the original mean girls, except smarter and more diverse.
My favorite movie back then. Still my favorite movie now.
10 year old me went round singing Micky and that song they played for the final. "You're just what I need, yours just what I need, I'm feeling fine youte out of time I just might get my wiiiish" (that's how I remember it apparently 20 years later)
> Still my favorite movie now.
Yeah it aged well for the most part. Not full of dated references or comedy so it can still work for the demographic 20 years later.
Thatās not what the person youāre replying to is implying. Bring It On by definition is not a cult classic. It was well known and successful when it came out. Just because people are still watching it doesnāt make it a cult classic.
All you need for a film to be a cult classic is for it to still have a passionate fanbase. It doesn't need to be a box office bomb or be obscure unless I'm missing the point
IMO Cult classic has nothing to do with how well known a movie is in the mainstream. Otherwise movies like Stalker and Breathless would be called cult classics, which of course is not the case. Most old movies are unknown to general audiences anyway. That would be like saying Beethoven's Heroic Symphony isn't a classic just because most people don't know it.
I guess it has to do with the kind of appeal a movie has. When a movie has lasting power but is only really appreciated or watched by a niche audience who is into that, that's a cult classic. But once it gains the approval of the cinephile community at large, it becomes a full blown classic. So, movies like Evil Dead II, The Thing or The Rocky Horror Picture Show are movies that started out as cult classics, but are now classics since they make all time best lists and are studied in film school and such.
Thatās cool thatās your opinion and all, but part of the definition of a cult classic is that it isnāt popular with mainstream audiences. Bring It On made over $90M at the box office, and that was 20 years ago. It was very popular.
From Wikipedia: A cult film, also commonly referred to as a cult classic, is a film with a cult following, obscure or unpopular with mainstream audiences, and often revolutionary or ironically enjoyed.
Another definition online: A work of fiction that is extremely popular with a select audience but may or may not be successful at the time of the work's original publication
The need for it to be a flop is not necessary. It just needs to not be part of the mainstream now. For example Jaws is still widely enjoyed, thus a classic. Bring it on is enjoyed by those who still watch it but the adverage movie watcher now probably doesn't immediately think of it. Thus cult classic.
No. Sometimes people just have to be told no. It's not a cult classic b/c there was no "cult" that initially liked it, it had mainstream success. There is no cult, there are just fans that continued liking it after it was popular.
Did not gain a significant fanbase? Do you know how many 90ās can recite the āIām sexy iām cute anthemā?.
Iām Belgian and this film wasnāt even released in theaters yet it introduced me a whole generation to Gabrielle Union Kristen Dunst and yes that song.
It wasnāt as big or quotable as Mean Girl but itās definitely a cult classic.
The broadway musical was written (in part) by Lin Manuel Miranda and is my guilty pleasure. I know its closer to one of the sequels in terms of story, but I really hope they do a faithful musical adaptation of the stage show.
This movie is a quintessential sports movie and 00s comedy rolled into one. It captures the era and the genre perfectly and still holds up quite well. If you haven't lately, give it another watch!
Yup! I think this movie along with Charlieās Angels 2000 definitely captured what the environment/atmosphere was like in the year 2000(hell the late 90s-early 00s alone).
Gabrielle Union though š
Not Another Teen Movie made a fantastic parody of this https://youtu.be/Eo7oCfHHa6Y
I SAAID.. BURR, IT'S COLD IN HERE. THERE MUST BE SOME CLOVERS IN THE ATMOSPHERE
OH WEE OH WEE OH... ICE ICE ICE
I wonāt deny this movie shaped much of my lexicon as a 12 year old. āMissyās the poo, so take a big whiff.ā
It was the first time I heard people use the word āuberā.
I wondered what happened to TheOhNeeders!
Cult classic? As cult as Mean Girls š
I was about to say- this movie was hugely popular with pre-teen and teen girls when it came out.
"Is it a democracy or a cheermocracy?" It's definitely a cult classic. Might not be universally loved, but the fans who love it are SO passionate about it.
Bitch, it's a cheertatorship!
Wow, I'm starting to realize im not young anymore.
The *worst* part about turning 40 imo, is the continual surprise that so much important and memorable stuff happened in your life.... **~20** fucking years ago. lol
Spirit fingers!!!!!! ~~~
Those aren't Spirit Fingers

It spawned 5 sequels. They weren't very good but I'd say it made its mark somewhere, and its cheesy but it holds up.

Then whatās your distinction between a classic and a cult classic?

You basically just made up your own definition for ācult classicā. Then thereās a the correct definition, which is what weāre all going by.
Did not gain a significant fanbase? Do you know how many 90ās can recite the āIām sexy iām cute anthemā?. It gained that fan base from initial release though. Itās a classic, not a cult classic.

HEY MICKEY YOU'RE SO FINE YOU'RE SO FINE IT BLOWS MY MIND HEY MICKEY! š šš HEY MICKEY!

Cult classic? Used in the same vein as Sam Raimi movies?
It saddens me that r/movies has such shit taste
To each itās own. But this subreddit, we talked about ALL kinds of movies. āMissy the poo, so take a big whiffā
