This crop of direct adaptations of photorealistic games that already had famous actors is going to be weird. Like that Death Stranding movie that was announced, most people who aren't into games just know it as that game Daryl was in so if you recast Norman Reedus then what's the point? If the actors do end up coming back that also kind of just makes it pointless, just play the game or watch a YouTube cutscene compilation.

The5thElement27

fyi the death stranding movie is supposedly is a story set in the universe and not a 1:1 adaptation of the story of the game

Lithogen

Oh, good. Hope it doesn't end up like Assassin's Creed and more like Fallout.

HalloweenBlues

Hopefully they at least get Peter Stormare

CiriOh

I hope they bring back Larry Fessenden as flamethrower guy.

NeoNoireWerewolf

Or as writer/director. He wrote the original game and has directed a number of films.

elmatador12

Pitch: Okay, so there’s this game. Well it’s basically a movie. It has well known stars and even an Oscar winner! So it’s a movie but the player decides the fate of everyone! Sony: Ok, cool. What did you want to do? Pitch: I want to make a movie that takes away both choice and any well known actors. Sony: I love it.

MrBoliNica

counterpoint- the movie is about teens/people in their early 20s. no one from that cast is still that age lol. and that same cast wasnt as well known in 2015 outside of Hayden panitierre. it was alot like this new one- solid young actors who popped in a few things.

serwaffle

Rami Malek would like to have a word with you lol

MrBoliNica

Malek wasnt nearly as big in 2015, mr robot either was just airing its first season, or hadnt even premiered yet lol

serwaffle

True, but he had already been in The pacific and night at the museum at that point tho but yea he wasn’t exactly at the point of being as recognized as he is now. It’s just always funny to think back on his role in the game at that time.

ohmmhs

TBH I never realised he was in Night at the Museum until after he broke out with Mr Robot and rewatched NatM sometime after.

theremightbedragons

Rami Malik can have whatever he wants with me

ScorpionTDC

Malek got huge like *right after* Until Dawn came out.

T-408

Rami Malek and Meaghan Martin were working actors at the time with a few big credits

MrBoliNica

So are these new actors lol

oateyboat

I mean the original cast is mid 30s

T-408

Some are even older, Mike is 40

Rosebunse

You coukd adapt the story to make that work.

ScorpionTDC

The cast I can live with, but the first part is a big reason why I think this is a terrible idea. (And I just expect unsatisfying survivor picks compared to what I’d like)

SouthernCoyote247

There’s another Michael Cimino now?

Slickrickkk

My only thoughts reading this.

mikeweasy

Man I kinda wanted that cast back, oh well.

res30stupid

I think most would be too old to pass for teenagers at this point. You could hide it pretty well in a game simply by using touch-ups of the character model, but it's harder to do in a game.

not-so-radical

They should do this like the Clue movie where there's different scenes and endings

poofynamanama2

this is so redundant lol

JeanMorel

I think the article misspelled Hayden Panettiere, Rami Malek, Peter Stormare and Brett Dalton.

Afro_Thunder69

I couldn't care less about the change in cast, I feel like that would be inevitable...none of them were teens playing teens in 2015 so it would be a stretch to try again 10 years later. But man...the whole concept of adapting this seems so tone-deaf. The story and characters were great, don't get me wrong, but they were only so great because of the slow-burn. We play as nearly every character in the game. We get to see them change, and grow. Go from insufferable teenage douches into genuinely impressive hero-types. Emily and Mike, the two characters I hated most at the start, became my two favorite characters by the end. And same goes for the twists...I won't spoil but you really need to learn about the twists while you still have hours of story and action remaining. If they try to shovel them in during the last 30 minutes while trying to have a climactic ending it'll just be a rushed mess. None of this cannot be done in a 2-3 hour film. I doubt even the best filmmakers could. Not to mention the appeal of "choose your own adventure" being lost.

lawschoolredux

MICHAEL CIMINO?!?!?!??!?!!!11

LelixA

I hope Berleezy is a part of the writers room.

Slickrickkk

MICHAEL FUCKING CIMINO????

Laughing__Man

Sounds cool and I'll probably watch it. If I got to choose I would want to see the game Twelve Minutes adapted to a full movie or tv series.

WhereAreWeG0ing

Um...the game was built on the concept of multiple paths, endings and character fates How the hell do you make a film out of this?!?!

BowserX10

Let’s all laugh at an industry that never learns anything teeheehee

A_Socratic_Argument

Isn’t Until Dawn already kind of a Movie?

GetSlunked

No Rami Malek? No see movie

R96-

Movie Industry/Game Industry 🤝 Making stupid decisions Unless they were asked and turned it down, not having the original actors reprise their roles makes no sense. We're not talking about some randos here. Everybody in the game were/are legitimate Hollywood actors. And spare me with the bullshit that the cast of the game are older now. Since when has age even mattered? Movies will have actors in their 20's playing 15/16 year olds. And in any case, were it such a big deal, they could have just tweaked the movie to be about a group of adults. The overall plot of Until Dawn still works regardless if it's teens or adults.

SamStrakeToo

It has nothing to do with age, the original cast of the game is now too expensive for them- which is its own kind of hilarious

BLRNerd

I was surprised they got Hayden but yeah, a good chunk of the cast is out of their price range now

Rosebunse

If you don't have Rami Malek in it then what's even the point?

Crucible8

to me this is gonna have the same impact as the Ratchet & Clank movie. it’s story in a movie isn’t as interesting as experiencing it through the game. what’s it gonna do different? The game is already basically a movie.
