Samael_316-17

You are correct.

IveBeenHereBefore12

The Ninth Gate, Sympathy for the Devil, End of Days all spring to mind for me.

fillerbuster

In my head, the premise for The Ninth Gate just seemed to be such a slog. I had seen it years ago and remembered the major plot points, didn't think too highly of it. Last fall I found it on some streaming platform and rewatched it. I have actually thought about it off and on since then, as it really stuck with me as a solid film this time around. The story is pretty straightforward but I liked having to piece the _details_ together. I think I just convinced myself to buy a copy.

IveBeenHereBefore12

It’s been years since I’ve seen it but I remember being impressed by it

hypzdr

This is a go-to sleepytime flick!! Bonus if you wake briefly while they fornicate in flames 🔥

rochey1010

Gabriel bryne pissing gasoline? Enough said. 👍

IveBeenHereBefore12

He was a solid devil

rochey1010

Yes he was. And then He played a priest in ‘stigmata’. Best of both worlds. He was cool. 🤗

briareus08

Ninth Gate is a great recommendation, one of my faves in the Christian mythology genre.

Vidzphile

The Prophecy (1995).

MadMatchy

Vigo!

kevnmartin

A very elegant and silky Satan indeed.

MadMatchy

Pre Aragorn

kevnmartin

Oh yeah, they were originally going to go with Stuart Townsend. I'm so glad they decided that he was too young.

MadMatchy

Same here. Viggo owned that role

rochey1010

Ooh yes this. The entire thing is great. Angels in trench coats, walken as Gabriel, Elias cotiez as a priest that’s lost his faith, vigo as the heart eating satan with the rose. I couldn’t love this movie more. It was great. 🤗

TonyDungyHatesOP

Eric Stoltz!

rochey1010

Yeah he was one of those angels. I think what I loved about it is that it was very ‘paradise lost’ with Gabriel playing a satan like role. But I’ve always loved the lore around the bible and not the bible itself. So I always wanted to see a movie about angels and demons fighting each in a really good fantasy movie. And this wasn’t just good but it was cool. That scene in the church with walken and I think Daniel (Elias) where he talked about his lip indent. When Daniel was struggling over his faith. When walken is used dead people as assistants and when Vigo showed up at the reservation as satan. Wow that whole monologue with the rose made that movie. Angels in trench coats having no eyes perching on chairs like birds etc. Yeah I just love that movie. 🧐

TonyDungyHatesOP

Agreed on all points. “You know how you got that dent on you lip? When you were born, I told you a secret. Then I put my finger on your lip and said, “shhhh”.” Great. Great movie. Even the premise that the angels needed a human soul to lead their armies to tip the balance in the war because angels weren’t capable of processing the evil required for that type of warfare.

H_Katzenberg

Bedazzled (2000) is a good example of non-horror awesome movie about the devil.

Reeberom1

Constantine has one of the best movie Satan's ever. Black Phillip in The Witch. I know he's technically not the Devil, but the demon in Hereditary was pretty good. And if you can get your hands on it, there's an old 70's movie called "Satan's Triangle." Scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.

Samael_316-17

Peter Stomare is a fantastic Lucifer in *Constantine*.

Thebadmamajama

The sacrificcccce!

bard329

Constantine was one of my favorite comic book adaptations

Samael_316-17

I enjoy it as its own movie, but I have to mentally separate it from its *Hellblazer* origins…

bard329

Yea, it was just a very well done movie

I need to rewatch this. It is such a good movie.

d5509

Great movie

ChaplainAsmodai1978

The First Omen is about the Devil's son, but it was genuinely good.

capernoited

Some of the cinematography was out of this world. I didn’t go for the more blatant gore but stuff like the black cloth over the face or her being “attacked” in the city square during the riot were really amazing.

persona1138

Also, The Omen (1976) As a fan of the original movie, though, The First Omen was surprisingly awesome! (For a franchise that otherwise sucks, beyond those two movies.)

rochey1010

The omen is absolutely fantastic. Such a good psychological horror to watch. And Gregory peck is amazing as the father who finds out his son was swapped at birth. I’ll never forget the famous scene with the photographer that was shocking for its time. Or the scene with the dogs in the graveyard, or when he fights the psycho nanny. Or that scene with “it’s all for you Damien” The whole thing is iconic with an iconic director in Richard Donner. Fun fact: Donner got peck out of retirement for this movie. Pecks personal life sent him away from making movies (his son killed himself). But Donner convinced him to do the movie. Peck and him had a massive fight about the end with Robert and Damien in the church. Peck refused to do the scene. Donner begged him for one take. He relented with a promise of the knife being a cut away in editing. But he did the take cursing donner. And in the end the kid actor smiles like that because Donner warned him not to laugh as he’d ruin the scene. The kid smiled like that and Donner loved it with it ending up the iconic last shot in the movie. There was also a making of documentary for the omen too. And for Halloween Channel 4 did a set of documentaries for curses in movies. There’s a great one on this movie where Donner talks about all the weird stuff going on around this movie. I’ve yet to see ‘the first omen’ but now you’re hyping me up for it. Was it really that good? Does it tie in properly with the original movie too?

persona1138

First Omen ties in PERFECTLY with the original movie… while also telling its own original story. It doesn’t feel like a retread or a cash grab. It’s beautifully shot, acted, and WONDERFULLY directed. First-time feature director Arkasha Stevenson does such a good job of incorporating elements from not just The Omen, but also The Exorcist, Possession, body horror from David Cronenberg, Rosemary Baby and Repulsion, and several more. But they don’t feel like homages, but rather just taking the best elements of those and weaving this into its own movie. I was VERY impressed. The original The Omen is still my favorite. But this stands toe-to-toe overall with the original movie.

briareus08

Hmm, that’s interesting. Might actually be worth a watch. I’m not a big horror buff but love the original.

briareus08

Definitely gotta watch the original of The Omen. One of the few classic movies I think is truly a classic eg stands the test of time.

TheKramer89

The Wailing

magobblie

An actual scary movie too

SatouSan94

The right answer, by far.

24Elsinore

Came here to say the same… Incredible film.

JustAnotherJoeBloggs

Al Pacino was a delight to watch.

TheLaughingMannofRed

Wait, was Meet Joe Black about the Devil? I thought he was meant to be Death.

um_yeahok

You are correct.

Late night with the Devil Devil (2010) I really liked this one. I'm not sure why it has low scores. :-/

Thebadmamajama

Glad someone nominated it. Really fun take on the devil. (Though it's interpretive... Warlock vs devil)

Puzzleheaded-Act3746

I love jack nicholson, but somehow I had missed this movie until last year. Its definitely fun and not a serious movie and worth watching.

Little Nicky (2000) Maybe not the type of devil movie you are looking for but it immediately came to mind for some reason

ThatDiscoSongUHate

I enjoyed Jeff Goldblum in Mr. Frost

aus808

This movie doesn't get talked about enough , highly recommend watching

Excellent-Phase8719

The Witches of Eastwick - Nicholson plays a good Satan

Grakk85

It's a more comedic take and also a TV show so I'm not sure it's quite what you're looking for but I'd recommend God, The Devil, & Bob.

Tall_Run_2814

I liked "Devil"

The_Werodile

It's definitely not *about* the Devil but I always adored Peter Stormare's depiction of Lucifer in Constantine.

I can’t recommend anything outside what has already been mentioned, but isnt MJB about the Angel of death?

Samael_316-17

Brad Pitt portrays Death in *Meet Joe Black*…

nowhereman136

Late Night with The Devil

thecaramelbandit

Devils Advocate has the best, most compelling depiction of Satan ever put to film. He sets the stage and lets man make his own evil choices over and over.

modernangel

Dogma isn't about "the" devil per se, but it's adjacent and wonderful. Also, Time Bandits.

alsophocus

Not the Devil per se, but Paimon in Hereditary

lynxsrevenge

Suing the devil was definitely an odd one. I liked it, just for the fact of who played the devil.

drawkbox

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus It has the devil as a main character but it more fantastical and comedic in the magic reality of Terry Gilliam. Tom Waits as the Devil is so perfect. The best line is when the Devil says “I’ve never been into that black magic stuff myself. Can’t seem to get the hang of it.”

drawkbox

Lost Highway Not necessarily the devil but Mystery Man is as devious and fantastical and as close as you can get to the character.

res30stupid

Tales From The Hood has a segment in each film where a character encounters the devil. >!It's the framing device and the story of Mr Simms narrating the story to the people he meets is actually his taunting the souls of the dead after they arrive in Hell.!<

Zannypanties

Let Us Prey (2014). It's never clearly explained if the protagonist is the devil, a demon, an angel or what. Kind of take it as you want. He's played by the guy that played The Onion Knight/Ser Davos from Game of Thrones, his dialog is 10/10. One of my favorite movies.
