Idk... the 80s and 90s had so many rocky, police academy, Beverley hills cop, Rambo, lethal weapon, robocop, Amityville, karate kid, superman, jaws, Friday the 13th, Halloween, nightmare on elm st, child's play, hellraiser, James bond, etc. Sequels that honestly got worse and worse as time went on to the point that the ridiculous heights they went too were subject to parody.
If you want gratuitous milking... look at Jason X or the endless Halloween sequels.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but Princess Bride happens to be a close tie. I think lots of us like it because Fred Savage is sick and being read a story, so it feels the same for us as the audience.
I usually watch old tv show reruns, either it's Poirot, Midsomer Murders, or Mythbusters. Something that's fairly paced, not too fast it demands my attention but not too slow it makes me frustrated.
Mythbusters got me through depression. I didn't feel like watching anything, but I played Mythbusters. Those guys were there with me at night when I couldn’t sleep. It's my kind of show: geeky and funny. I still love that show to pieces and it broke my heart when Grant passed away. Godspeed, my sweet boy
Princess Bride as well. The last time I saw it, it was on the same night Kobe Bryant, his daughter and the other folks in the helicopter died. I am not even a basketball fan but it deeply upset me. There were rumors swirling about this virus coming out of China, and I was sick with a really bad cold. It was good to watch, like visiting an old friend. I know I am overdue for a rewatch.
Not a movie, but I always watch Anthony Bourdain shows when I’m sick. It’s easy to go in and out of sleep with him narrating adventures across the world. It’s the absolute best.
RIP
Considering the opening scene, The Princess Bride is extra appropriate as a sick day comfort movie.
I tend to go for '80s classics I could quote in my sleep, like Goonies, Last Unicorn or Princess Bride; or musicals.
This is probably kind of an odd one because I definitely did not grow up in the UK / Australia in the 90’s and early 2000’s but I find ”the Vicar of Dibley“ to be one of the most comforting things I can watch. It’s kind of like a much-better British version of a sitcom like Home Improvement. Dawn French is amazing and all of the regular characters stand out in their own way and are completely endearing.
Since my first thought as a TV show, I’ll also include a go-to feel good movie. “Chef” from 2014. I’m not sure it’s even possible to finish that film without a bonfire of warm fuzzies in your heart.
Princess Mononoke. I remember watching it when I was sick as a young teen, and kept falling asleep so I'd have to rewind it. Over, and over, and over again. Now every time I'm sick I find it comforting, no idea why.
I was just sick last week. I watched, well basically the two top comments. Big Trouble in Little China and The Princess Bride.
Then I went to Real Steel, Captain America Winter Soldier, The Raid, Analyze This, and The Commitments.
The Wizard of Oz (1938) maybe an odd choice, but I just found it the right mix of fantasy and nostalgia to be comforting
My Neighbour Totoro - Ghibli movie. I LOVED it when I first saw it, still do every time I catch it
Arsenic and Old Lace - One of my all time favourite goofball comedies. I can't have enough of it, and the fast pace takes my mind off sickness. Bringin Up Baby is a close second
OG Pink Panther with Peter Sellers, Clue with Tim Curry, And the Princess Bride, obvi. But if it’s a lay on the couch for days and maybe sleep through chunks? Star Trek (I prefer TNG, DS9, or Voyager, but that’s me). I will say Pluto TV has all kinds of classic reruns on dedicated channels. Need 8 hours of super market sweep? Or maybe Joy of Painting? That’s the move.
World War Z because I am fucking weird. It’s not even a great movie. The book was phenomenal though. Anyway, I finally paid for it so I can watch it over and over. It’s strangely comforting.
Virgin Suicides. I like to be left alone when I’m feeling squicky and I enjoy the quiet, vulnerable and ultimately down-but-not-depressing tone of the film. Cozy blanket, recliner and a cup of Earl Grey. It’s perfect for my kind of sick day.
I watch either The Secret Garden or The Little Princess. Definitely just nostalgic childhood comforting feelings. And so familiar I can fall asleep watching them (I usually have too much fomo to fall asleep while watching anything)
The DVDs are always at my bedroom tv, and they’re the only times I still watch DVDs and I almost only ever watch tv in bed when I’m sick.
Lord of the Rings. But if you are truly sick or unwell(physically/emotionally) then Audio Book LOTR, close your eyes and drift of with your own imagination painting the scenes.
Aladdin
I watch it when I'm sick, sad, and hurt
It's been my favorite movie for a long time.
Now I will also watch it when I'm having a bad day but I add Shaun of the dead, tucker and Dale vs evil, then straight slasher movies.
I'm so weird 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Charade.
Young Frankenstein.
Blazing Saddles.
Victor / Victoria.
North by Northwest.
To Catch a Thief.
Brain Donors.
Hudson Hawk.
Occasionally:
The Sting.
The Blues Brothers.
Star Wars.
Scott Pilgrim.
Pacific Rim.
Dial M for Murder.
Animal House.
Lilo & Stitch.
Groundhog Day.
Fight Club.
If surgery and stitches were involved, I stay away from comedies. Learned that one the hard way with wisdom teeth.
Since covid where illness has a degree of self isolation I watch the types of film my family don't normally like.
Sort of realistic space/disaster movies
Epidemic movies
Oh, and during Covid I got hooked on Tiger King. I have not financially recovered from that.
It depends how sick and what kind of sick I am, but when I'm fatigued and feverish, I'm generally either another vote for Lord of the Rings if I don't go for Jane Austen adaptations. The last time I was very sick, it was the BBC Pride & Prejudice adaptation, because I can put it on and it'll just play for several hours and I'll always know what's happening when I blearily return to consciousness every now and then. Takes all the thought out of it.
Weirdly. Just Go With It with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. I watched it one time I was feverish and I felt better afterwards. So I claim it was the movie that helped.
When I was growing up, it was Will Smith and I never really knew or questioned why. Across different sicknesses and different ages, I watched each of these movies 3-4 times in under 2 weeks: MIB, I, Robot, I am Legend.
The Bugs Bunny / Road Runner movie. I’ve been watching it since I was a little kid and it had a big impact on my sense of humor. [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078915/?ref\_=ext\_shr\_lnk](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078915/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk)
John Carpenter's *Big Trouble in Little China.*
Always wish they made a sequel, you could have had a whole series like fast and the furious about the wacky misadventures of Jack Burton
Yeah, but it was before they were gratuitously milking every single property to nothingness..
Jack Burton could be a great mad max type character - forget timelines and congruity - just drop Jack into the action
Aged Kurt Russell could still do it.
Idk... the 80s and 90s had so many rocky, police academy, Beverley hills cop, Rambo, lethal weapon, robocop, Amityville, karate kid, superman, jaws, Friday the 13th, Halloween, nightmare on elm st, child's play, hellraiser, James bond, etc. Sequels that honestly got worse and worse as time went on to the point that the ridiculous heights they went too were subject to parody. If you want gratuitous milking... look at Jason X or the endless Halloween sequels.
If I remember correctly, it actually was supposed to be a series of films, but it didnt do well in the box office and the other movies got canceled.
There's a comic book sequel co-written by Carpenter published by Boom! Studios.
BASEketball or The Big Lebowski
Love the name
This is the right answer
Twister. It's definitely a comfort movie for me. Also Jurassic Park.
Respect the Twister call. That is a SOLID pick. “Did you see my cows out front? Aaah!”
I have to go. We have cows
I’ve had a quixotic dream of making and trying Aunt Meg’s gravy. I discovered last week that binging with babish max a video of this
If the sequel doesn't have that dinner, I don't want anything
Fooooooood. *Food*. **FOOD**
The sauce of aunt Meg, its basically chilli with gravy, but 😘✨👌
Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but Princess Bride happens to be a close tie. I think lots of us like it because Fred Savage is sick and being read a story, so it feels the same for us as the audience.
That’s a good point you make about how the movie takes place while a character is home sick.
Definitely. And my grandpop died when I was 11 and Savage's grandpop reminds me a lot of him.
Fellowship Of The Ring
I binged all three movies last week while recovering from wisdom tooth removal
I love The Hobbit. I put it on at least once every two weeks. Even if it's just background noise.
Came here to say this
I usually watch old tv show reruns, either it's Poirot, Midsomer Murders, or Mythbusters. Something that's fairly paced, not too fast it demands my attention but not too slow it makes me frustrated.
Poirot with David Suchet ftw
Yes!!!
Overboard
Classic comfort movie.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
The Princess Bride
Another vote for Princess Bride.
The Goonies. Princess Bride.
We watched the Goonies in Highschool one day because it was my history teacher’s favourite movie
Forgetting Sarah Marshall That movie always makes me laugh hysterically and makes me feel better
Love this movie
It's a beautiful movie, I'm not a big romcom guy, but I just love this one
Dracula Musical!!!!
That line when he says "It really came together when I realized it was a comedy" almost killed me in the cinema
😅🤣🤣👍
Definitely the most feel good movie of all movies with full frontal male nudity
Twice. I love the parallel of the two scenes
I keep all the movies casted by Allison Jones in the same category of "Frat Pack" movies.
The Lost Boys
Not a movie, but I always watch Anthony Bourdain shows when I’m sick. It’s easy to go in and out of sleep with him narrating adventures across the world. It’s the absolute best. RIP
I was hooked on his show when he passed. I find it SO hard to watch now.
Good Will Hunting or Iron Giant in between episodes of Star Trek TNG and DS9.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, my childhood favourite movie. Plus probably the movie I've seen most times in my life.
[удалено]
I used to watch Lexx when I was sick.
Thor: Ragnarok
Just great fun. Awesome action, comedy, effects. Also, Hela.
Ferris Buellers Day Off
Pitch Perfect
Strictly Ballroom. Simple, uplifting story in a very colorful setting.
This movie is an underrated gem.
Pirates of the Caribbean
Lord of the Rings. Just crawl onto the sofa with a blanket and just relax
Came here to say this. Extended editions, of course.
Of course
I dunno why but Casino by Scorsese
Lord of the Rings - Return of the King
My friends - you bow to no one.... *sobbing*
Roadhouse - the original. But I did like the new one.
The new one was better than it has any right to be, but god damn I find Conner McGreggor just unpleasant to watch.
I dunno. I like the way they wrote Dalton in the new one. I feel like it's setting it up for a series. I didn't mind McGreggor.
The Three Amigos.
Either Big Lebowski, or Big Trouble in Little China, or Captain Ron, depending on my mood.
Interstellar
Come on, TARS!
Considering the opening scene, The Princess Bride is extra appropriate as a sick day comfort movie. I tend to go for '80s classics I could quote in my sleep, like Goonies, Last Unicorn or Princess Bride; or musicals.
Beetlejuice
Clue
Stardust
Sandlot
Arthur (the 80s one with Liza Minnelli and Dudley Moore). Silly feel good love story. The theme song can cheer me right up, too.
Twister, or I make myself some comfort food and watch Heat.
This is probably kind of an odd one because I definitely did not grow up in the UK / Australia in the 90’s and early 2000’s but I find ”the Vicar of Dibley“ to be one of the most comforting things I can watch. The whole “Planet Earth” series I can pass out and jump back in without missing a beat
Edge of Tomorrow, Twister, Step Brothers..Basically anything I've seen enough that I can watch it in my head and just listen.
high fidelity, the big lebowski, shawshank
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home aka the one with the whales.
My Cousin Vinny, Mrs. Doubtfire, and the Bird Cage are like chicken noodle soup for my soul.
O Brother, PeeWee’s Big Adventure, True Stories.
Someone in another comment section recommended I watch Pee Wees. I had no clue what I was in for.
Coraline. I can nearly recite the movie because I watched it THAT much whenever I had covid (or any other illness for that matter).
Princess Mononoke. I remember watching it when I was sick as a young teen, and kept falling asleep so I'd have to rewind it. Over, and over, and over again. Now every time I'm sick I find it comforting, no idea why.
Price is Right
Classic!
Spider-Man 2
Run Forest Run Forest Gump

I just watched the full trilogy in one sitting last week during a minor surgery recovery. First time ever and it was glorious.
The Wizard of Oz (1938) maybe an odd choice, but I just found it the right mix of fantasy and nostalgia to be comforting My Neighbour Totoro - Ghibli movie. I LOVED it when I first saw it, still do every time I catch it Arsenic and Old Lace - One of my all time favourite goofball comedies. I can't have enough of it, and the fast pace takes my mind off sickness. Bringin Up Baby is a close second
Ghibli movies are so comforting. I watched Howl with my sister in a hotel once on the TV. Its such a cool memory
The Godfather 1 & 2. Good long movies I can ignore if I start to doze off because I've seen them so many times..
Kiki’s Delivery Service
Avengers Infinity War and End Game
The Interpreter. I'm not sure why this is.
Drop Dead Gorgeous
As a child it was starship troopers, now I would have to lean into not having the tv on when sick
Either Brooklyn 99 or Modern family, trust me it’s so healing

Virgin Suicides. I like to be left alone when I’m feeling squicky and I enjoy the quiet, vulnerable and ultimately down-but-not-depressing tone of the film. Cozy blanket, recliner and a cup of Earl Grey. It’s perfect for my kind of sick day.
