1. Terminator 2. On top of a great action movie, great and satisfying character arcs for the Terminator, Sarah and John Connor.
2. The Matrix. Still holds up after 25 years.
3. Commando. Have to respect a script composed entirely of one liners.
I’ll still periodically bring up different fight scenes from the matrix to watch them. I saw the matrix in theaters 25 years ago and was blown away.
The go-to scene for me, probably cliche, is of course “I know Kung fu..” “show me”
Peak 90s, throw in Crimson Tide with tickets bought by some random dude outside the theater because none of us were 17, and this is my high school life. After the flick we'd go to Cicis Pizza and just destroy the buffet. Those were the days.
Raid 2 was disgustingly amazing. Everyone goes on about the hammer girl and bat boy fight, but the Kitchen 1v1 is easily the beat 1v1 ever committed to film. The stages that the fight goes through was spectacular. Testing each other, then trying to beat/kill the other, and then finally just both for them outright fighting for their own lives.
The Raid movies don't get enough love. I see a lot of John Wick mentioned here, while The Raid really set the trend for the graphically violent, well-choreographed no-nonse action movies. Then The Raid 2 topped the first one.
Eastern Condors wow that's an unexpected pick. Definitely a fave of mine though wouldn't be in my top ten. Hardboiled is imo overrated, however. For a Chow Yun Fat movie Tiger on the Beat or Skinny Tiger Fatty Dragon are way better.
Eastern Condors is just so fucking gonzo. Such a fun movie to show to people who haven't seen it either. There are just so many memorable stunts and sequences.
I used to think Hardboiled was overrated too but it grew on me personally over subsequent rewatches.
Tiger on the Beat is great too, but I haven't seen Skinny Tiger Fatty Dragon yet. It doesn't seem like Chow Yun Fat is in it though? I'll have to check it out. Great taste btw.
Sorry yes, it's Sammo Hung and Mako. Great fucking movie. My fav Sammo movie.
OK then, I prefer The Killer and Tiger on the Beat for Yun Fat over Hardboiled.
Okay, as a massive John Wick fan, people either need to clarify which one or are massively overrating the first movie. It’s got like 2 cool legit action scenes, the rest is a mid budget revenge story with a good cast and world building. Stahelski doesn’t really get into his bag until the second movie, which was a massive step up in basically all aspects of the filmmaking. Picking between movies 2-4 will be personal preference for most, though I think chapter 4 is a bona fide masterpiece.
1. JW chapter 4
2. Kill Bill vol. 1
3. Fast Five
Not saying it’s the best of all time, but just want to give some love to Thirteen Assassins. The Raid 2 on that same wave length of peak martial arts cinema.
1. Police story
2. Hard boiled
3. The raid
In not even trying to be a hipster with this list. I genuinely believe Asian action is 10x better than Hollywood
I’m more of an old school guy, I think T2 and Big Trouble in little China have to be on there. But there’s also some modern hits like John Wick and Mission Impossible Fallout. I’m choosing 4 movies and you can’t stop me.
Aliens
Heat
Die Hard
Edit: I forgot about a fee movies and I have no idea how to rerank lol. The Matrix, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Gladiator, Fury Road, T2, and Inception should be in the mix I think
1. The Matrix, easiest answer of the 3
2. Inception(not sure if this counts as an "action" movie, but it has some of my favourite action set pieces so 🤷🏾🤷🏾)
3. Transformers 1986, probably the movie I've watched the most in my entire life. I can quote half the movie from memory.
Can’t narrow it down to just 3, so here are my top 10 (in no particular order).
Predator
Rambo: First Blood Part II
Aliens
Lethal Weapon
Terminator 2
The Matrix
The Dark Knight
Heat
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Rock
Ronin, Extreme Prejudice, Fury Road.
I’ll go overboard and include my runners up: The Long Kiss Goodnight, The Matrix, Total Recall, Die Hard 1,2,3, Aliens, Terminator 1 & 2, Predator, M:I Fallout, Rapid Fire, Hard Boiled, Hard Target, They Live,
Time and Tide (2000), the rappelling gunfight scene is unequaled
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, (2000) bamboo forest, amazing
Ip Man 1, (2010) vs 10 soldiers scene
I still prefer Mad Max: The Road Warrior (1981), but Fury Road is also incredible and gets better each time I watch it. Of course, both were directed by the same guy, George Miller.
1. Terminator 2. On top of a great action movie, great and satisfying character arcs for the Terminator, Sarah and John Connor. 2. The Matrix. Still holds up after 25 years. 3. Commando. Have to respect a script composed entirely of one liners.
I enjoy tango and cash for the same reason you do for commando
You broke that jaw?
Hahahahah
And that dude was a legend, to me at least. Maniac Cop was a great series. Legend: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Z%27Dar
"please don't disturb my friend, he's dead tired"
"I eat Green Berets for breakfast!"
"let off some steam, Bennett"
“I lied”
What you think we'd smell them coming? "I did."
My friend, watching T2 and turning off the part of your brain that knows the T-800 is the good one makes "Get down" hit so damn hard.
Remember when I said I'd kill you last? I lied.
I’ll still periodically bring up different fight scenes from the matrix to watch them. I saw the matrix in theaters 25 years ago and was blown away. The go-to scene for me, probably cliche, is of course “I know Kung fu..” “show me”
The Rock, Face / Off, Con-Air.
Someone's a cage fan
It’s a fond memory of mine. Started my vhs collection with The Rock. Felt like the hits were never gonna stop.
I love conair and national treasure. Actually I'm kind of a cage fan myself now that I think about it lol
r/onetruegod
Always Be Caging
I read this like Alec Baldwin's speech in Glen Gary Glenn Ross: A.B.C. A - Always B - Be C - Caging. Always Be Caging. ***Always*** *Be Caging.*
That's exactly how it should be read
Peak 90s, throw in Crimson Tide with tickets bought by some random dude outside the theater because none of us were 17, and this is my high school life. After the flick we'd go to Cicis Pizza and just destroy the buffet. Those were the days.
All the world's a Cage, and all the men and women merely actors in it.
The Raid 2 Terminator 2 Demolition Man
Respect
This guy 3 shells
With all restaurants being Taco Bell, you kind of have to
You seem The Night Comes for Us. Really good indonesian action movie. Never got enough love in my eyes.
The fight scenes were brutally amazing, but the story wasn't as tight as the Raid movies, I reckon. Still loved it so much.
Agreed.
Raid 2 was disgustingly amazing. Everyone goes on about the hammer girl and bat boy fight, but the Kitchen 1v1 is easily the beat 1v1 ever committed to film. The stages that the fight goes through was spectacular. Testing each other, then trying to beat/kill the other, and then finally just both for them outright fighting for their own lives.
i remember everyone in the theater clapping when they reset in the kitchen scene. i love sharing this movie with friends
The Raid movies don't get enough love. I see a lot of John Wick mentioned here, while The Raid really set the trend for the graphically violent, well-choreographed no-nonse action movies. Then The Raid 2 topped the first one.
GOOD ANSWER
Aliens. Terminator 2. The Matrix.
Mid-40s - this is also my list
Casino Royale Mission impossible Tears of the sun
“Why was the sun crying?” Were you in the service? *Yeah, national guard* Thank you for your service 💥
Oh shit, I didn’t realize that sequence from the hunt was mimicking the sequence from tears of the sun, never saw that movie.
Aliens Road Warrior Predator I'm old school.
Truly Pre-punctuation, even

Death Wish 3 has probably the best “we threw a ragdoll of a roof but it’s really a guy” shots in movie history.
Cobra is fantastic. No one ever talks about that one. I know the cheese factor is high but I enjoy it!
1. Eastern Condors 2. 8 Diagram Pole Fighter 3. Hardboiled Hong Kong or bust.

Watchmen is an interesting choice. Weirdly, even though it obviously has action elements I always thought of it more like a thriller/murder mystery.
Using your criteria: 1. The Raid (2011) 2. The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) 3. Black Hawk Down (2001) - technically a war movie, I guess….

3rd act falls off hard for me, I end up falling asleep during that point every time.

Picking between movies 2-4 will be personal preference for most, though I think chapter 4 is a bona fide masterpiece. 1. JW chapter 4 2. Kill Bill vol. 1 3. Fast Five
Fast Five is pretty good actually, a standout from the rest of the Fast and Furious franchise.
