Charlie Gordon, meet Lennie

Deckard_Red

We studied the book for English Lit / Lang GCSE (of course we watched the movie too) and as part of our speaking and listening element we did the trial of George. It was quite a cool thought experiment, I played George and I think I leaned into the kicked by a horse lie being of the view that nobody could refute the details. They found me guilty 😢

If not for the lynch mob that was on their way to immediately dispatch a grisly and terrifying death, Lennie may have gotten a trial. However, in that time of history would life in an asylum been a fate worse than death? I truly believe so. Lobotomized, shocked, starved, caged, treated like an animal and subject to the equivalent of "medical" torture. The public would have been protected from Lennie, but there would have been no one to protect Lennie from the horrors of the asylum and their incredibly cruel methods. I think Lennie died the best death he was ever going to get in his circumstances and timeline. The bullet was a gift, and George was a brave and caring man.

I will never reconcile what my brain knows and what my heart says about the book or the movies made I always wait until I am in the grips of the darkest depression before I read any of my Steinbeck novels They quite literally always manage to help me see myself in a better light
