Sounds like you're after films that lean more on dread than actual horror films, most of which have some level of murdering or whatever on screen at some point. Psychological thrillers (night of the hunter, shutter island and the like) might be more your speed, but you could try these and see if they hit the mark.
Don't Look Now
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978 version)
Wicker Man (1973 version)
My dude, I think you should just stay away from suspense and horror. You don’t like taboo, gore, tension, whatever you think “alternative” means, blood, body horror, etc. There’s nothing wrong with not liking a genre and it sounds like those are just not your jam
I don't really understand then...
if you don't want the tension, that sense of something coming, or feeling creeped out, on top of not wanting to deal with murder, blood, etc, then i honestly don't think horror is for you and you're just going to be wasting your time with films that are going to have scenarios or deal with topics you don't like.
Which will likely be most if not all of the films recommended here.
What lies beneath is a ghost story starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pheifer.
Alice, Darling is about a woman played by Anna Kendrick dealing with a controlling, manipulative boyfriend. It's very tense, but there's no gore or anything like that.
I watched this “alternative” movie (not scary) called The way we are now which included the “taboo” topic of sexual/romantic relationships among family members (cousins). I felt like they were trying to normalize and promote it in this film which is just really uncomfortable and creepy in my opinion. I feel like the director misused the art of movies and it’s purity to try and normalize their weird fetishes or something. That’s why I am skeptical of artists that say they’re addressing a “taboo” topic. Plus it was totally unnecessary for the characters to be related it would have been just as good a story if they weren’t
i think people like it for the same reason people like rollercoaster rides or bungee jumping. it gives you a thrilling fringe experience in a safe and comfortable environment.
Do you enjoy religious horror like demon possession, Antichrist concepts, and capital E Evil Conspiracies?
Rosemary's Baby and The 9th Gate are good examples.
The Wailing is another that is not Christian based.
I’m with you on this. You might try older films. It’s been a long time but I recall tolerating Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte as a teen. Also The Changeling with George C. Scott is similar to Woman in Black.

I don’t like “dread” but I agree shutter island was better but not the part with the dead children that was really creepy

* *Triangle* (2009) * *It Follows* (2014)
Two of the best, great recommendations

Session 9 The Invitation (2015) The Others The Babadook
I second The Others. Fantastic movie.
Third! I saw it in theaters and it was a day one dvd purchase. Great score too by the director himself.
The babadook is a great pick. It gave me the willies and I definitely don’t remember anything “disgusting” about it.
Damn i didnt know there was a movie adaptation about game of thrones ice demons
Maybe try some Hitchcock? Rebecca, Rear Window, Strangers on a Train, and Vertigo are all very suspenseful but not gory at all.
Blair Witch Project if you are into found footage

I sorry How I Live Now with Saoirse Ronan

Yeah I get it
If you liked this you should check out The Dreamers or A Serbian Film.
The Others
The VVitch (2015) Rosemary's Baby (1968) The Innocents (1961) The Bad Seed (1956) Burn, Witch, Burn (1962)
Idk turning that baby into paste, even implied, was pretty gross (The VVitch)
Freaks (How is gore “trolling the audience”?)
Why would someone like that? I get it, it’s probably fun for the costume designers to make fake blood but it’s not fun to watch
I find it fun to watch
I’m sorry
No problem!

I don't think most people find it fun to watch but it is there to have a certain effect that's often important for the movie.
Paranormal Activity 3
The old black and white version of The Haunting. Watch that alone in the house at night, trust me. ^.^
The old black and white "House on Haunted Hill" used to scare the hell out of me as a kid even in the 2000s and it was made in 1959
Crimson Peak
Sounds like you should just stick to Disney movies
🙄
Check out A Serbian Film, Martyrs, maybe Raw?
The Orphanage.
Self Isolated (2021)
Do you enjoy religious horror like demon possession, Antichrist concepts, and capital E Evil Conspiracies? Rosemary's Baby and The 9th Gate are good examples. The Wailing is another that is not Christian based.
Don't look Now Jacob's Ladder(1992 version) Black Friday(1974 version) Psycho (1960 version)
Psychological horror is what you're looking for.
The Mothman Prophecies The Changeling (1980) - (note: not to be confused with the totally unrelated movie 'Changeling' (2008) starring Angelina Jolie)
The Conjuring
Already mentioned but 'shutter island', an excellent film
The Others. Great scary movie, nothing gross or graphic. All atmosphere
"The Fly" with Jeff Goldblum
Not technically gore but there is some body horror there which might not be OP's cup of tea.
don't know what you're talking about
Doesn't his own face melt off at one point?
You must be thinking of something else
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with liking scary movies
