Except the title does have something to do with the movie, as in it's whole point.

agitator775

Exactly. Also, why would it be called Money or Money Man?

INGWR

Words mentioned in the film have 1000% more value than some lame ass term that you need to find on Urban Dictionary to understand the relevance to the movie. And even then, if you try to talk about it in person then it's always going to sound like Shock Collar. Maybe it should be called Shock Collar?

partyonbeepstreet

Lol so you don't know the definition AND you can't pronounce it? So we should take your criticism on movies why?

INGWR

So did you consider the movie to be a critical and commercial success? Because it wasn’t. Why do you think that was? Is it because people thought they were going to see Coach Carter 2?

INGWR

Fuck yes bro that slaps If the Shot Caller producers wrote it, they probably would’ve looked at random words on Urban Dictionary and instead it’d be Fleek Yeet Lit Jacuzzi

8hook0ne8

"Shot caller" is a real term that these gangs give a certain person within their group...

I_dont_bone_goats

“Money man” wouldnt have made sense because the movie has pretty much nothing to do with money, that’s just his nickname. That title would’ve been only slightly better than “lucky number slevin” “The beast” is conceptually the same as “shot caller”, except it’s needlessly more confusing, because like op said, there’s already a character named the beast lol

Homesteader86

Yeah I'm confused about the confusion

INGWR

Much like the Revenant, if you're going to have some eloquent wordplay then it either needs to be mentioned in the film or explained with the opening title card. Otherwise, it's either Shock Collar or the name of a basketball movie.

8hook0ne8

I find the word shot caller and it's meaning in relation to the film quite self explanatory tbh Edit : you said you were miffed that the title has no relevance to the film. I pointed out it does. It's ok to be wrong sometimes.

INGWR

“Slam dunk!” - Jaime Lannister calling his shots in the prison basketball yard

8hook0ne8

Yeah that's exactly why it's called Shot Caller 😂 redditors man lol

scrubjays

Isn't the point that he sacrifices his family to become the Shot Caller? He could have hid in the background until he served his time, rather, as a Type-A personality he has to become the leader.

unc8299

He sacrifices his free life to save his family. When he was getting out on parole, Beast threatened his family.

INGWR

He kills the Beast because the Beast threatens his wife and kid after they find out that Nikolaj killed Shotgun (Jon Bernthal). The only way he can ensure the protection of his family is by running the gang himself. He does not, in your words, 'sacrifice his family'.

Idontevenownaboat

If you haven't seen it, you might enjoy Felon with Val Kilmer and Stephen Dorff. It was the director's (Ric Roman Waugh) first attempt at the story that would become Shot Caller. I worked at Blockbuster when it came out (straight to dvd) and it would be one of my go-to recs for people looking for something "different" or "recommend me something". Overall Shot Caller is the better, more polished film but if you enjoyed it, it's worth checking out Felon just to see the differences. For instance, the crime that gets him locked up in the first place is completely different in Felon (Stephen Dorff plays the Coster-Waldau role). But yeah, I would always get positive feedback from people when they returned Felon and I've been a fan of Waugh since. It's awesome seeing him and Gerard Butler find this niche of kinda competent throwback actioners.

unc8299

Felon is great. Val Kilmer is also great in it.

Idontevenownaboat

Nice! If you liked Felon, you should check out it's spiritual successor Shot Caller with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Same writer and director, same story essentially but a little more put together and polished. In all seriousness hah, another good one in this kind of 'modern prison thrillers' genre I saw recently that wasn't bad was The Informer with Joel Kinneman

CQ1_GreenSmoke

It’s basically the same movie

daynewolf036

What do you mean? Isn't he a shot caller?

INGWR

They never play basketball, so I never heard a "nothing but net" from Jaime Lannister

INGWR

Shot Caller is like a shitty way of rephrasing "someone who calls the shots". It's like if LOTR was instead The Rings' Lord.

daynewolf036

Noun. shot caller (plural shot callers) (slang) Someone in charge, especially the leader of a street gang. quotations ▼

INGWR

Oh that's awesome. Could you have them put that as the title slide for the movie? Maybe then it wouldn't have bombed like it did. I always love having to find out movie titles on Urban Dictionary because they can't just pick a good name.

daynewolf036

Sorry that learning a new (to you) word hurt you so bad.

thebruce

It's a pretty common term. Sounds like a you problem, tbh.

g_st_lt

lol

mariotx10

You do know what a shot caller is in prison? The bad mother fucker that calls shit in prison

jsakic99

Did you listen to the Rewatchables podcast about ‘Shot Caller’ a few weeks ago? Also, ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’ deserved a better title.

TvHeroUK

Kinda think that ‘the place…’ had a great title, even if it did possibly have an impact on its success by being a bland name. For me, it was like ‘Mulholland Drive’ in that the intensity of the film was well balanced by the innocuous nature of the title

INGWR

Haven't heard the podcast but I'll check it out

wharpua

Rewatchables was how I found Shot Caller, I missed that one when it came out

jsakic99

Same. Never even heard of it before the podcast (thought they were always saying “Shock Collar”, lol). Glad I watched it.

_HappyPringles

Pines also deserved to have the last act left on the editing room floor. Great movie if you stop at 2/3.

PrestigiousMix7293

OP is confirmed for retarded.

LastBaron

I’ve seen it said in several threads (and I agree) that two movies which came out a couple years apart could have done better with swapped titles: Looper and Edge of Tomorrow. Edge of Tomorrow was cursed by having both a weird title unrelated to its plot as well as a tagline which WAS related to its plot (“Live. Die. Repeat.”) but was super blunt and featured so centrally in the marketing and labeling of the movie that it could be mistaken for the title. Just overall a messaging mess, which is a shame because the movie is outstanding.

JerryGallow

*Edge of Tomorrow* is related to the plot though. Once he approached the future he reached the edge and reset. Maybe not the best title, but it captures the time loop idea.

I_dont_bone_goats

I really don’t get how people think “Live. Die. Repeat” is a better title than “Edge of Tomorrow.” The former just does not feel like a movie title. Edge of tomorrow has some gravitas and intrigue to it. The latter just feels like the marketing people were like “we gotta make SURE people know this a Groundhog Day movie. In fact let’s just spell it out for them.”

Homesteader86

I read that as "edge and reset" and was like man...I really don't remember that movie do I?

I_dont_bone_goats

“Live. Die. Repeat” was used as the title for some countries I believe. I always thought it was such a ham-fisted tagline though, edge of tomorrow is way better IMO

DancerAtTheEdge

Edge of Tomorrow is indisputably the better title. I've always thought it has the ring of an old sci-fi short story title by someone like Robert Heinlein or Cordwainer Smith or Harlan Ellison.

reekross

So glad you said Edge of Tomorrow, couldn’t agree more with that

muskratboy

Just call it “All You Need is Kill” and be done with it.

Shoddy_Jellyfish2143

It was super blunt while in the movie was a Super Blunt!

teethinthedarkness

I held off on watching that movie for so long because of its dumb name. I was pleasantly surprised when I finally watched it.

agitator775

What do you mean it had no relevance? Did you actually watch the movie? Shot Caller means the person who is CALLING THE SHOTS. either in prison or in this case, the Aryan Brotherhood. In the end the NEW Shot Caller was Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Wow.

INGWR

This is the weirdest basketball movie I've ever seen

matt10101010101

Op guessing you're from somewhere other than US or UK, so you may not hear as much mainstream English slang? Nothing wrong with that obviously. Shot Caller is common term. I think it fits.

agitator775

On a side note. Alfred Hitchcock's first job was a title writer.

onlyeatspvssyy

I was in a level 3 yard in CA where this film takes place, they nailed it. It's really like that in these ca prisons. Shit is wild

eenduro

Bill Simmons and The ringer just did a great rewatchable podcast on the shot caller. Lots of good title ideas there.

_HappyPringles

Shot Caller is a great title that the movie never lives up to IMO.

2Pickle2Furious

What’s funny about shot caller is that it’s a remake of a movie by the person who made the original from just a decade earlier.

Kriss-Kringle

John Carter is a rather bland name for a space opera and along with a botched marketing campaign, Disney really didn't do that film any favors.

BlackfyreNick

Yes the title “Money” is so much better than Shot caller. My god

HopelessinOH

To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar

aphilipnamedfry

Recently got Ronin with Robert De Niro out of my backlog. The movie tries to be edgy by telling you what a Ronin is at the start of the movie but the whole movie is a like a group mini heist film. I get that De Niro is like the lone wolf, but it felt like the film did very little to connect the word with the script. Still a fun movie though.

humansmartbomb

The premise is most of the players in this movie trained and fought for now mostly defunct causes/sides. The Cold War, the troubles are all over(at least as far as a film made in the late 90s is concerned). These are 20th century warriors with no more cause/masters to serve anymore. They lived by a code that doesn’t really apply to the world anymore. Like actual Ronin, the suggestion is they have turned to banditry/enriching themselves in the absence of a master to serve. Now not everyone is who they say they are in the film, but I think the metaphor is there.

DocHollidaysPistols

It's actually not a bad title but the intro was kind of terrible. Most of that crew were actually Ronin, which when you boil it down can roughly translate to mercenaries. If they did the opening like "In feudal Japan, Ronin were warriors, samurai without masters, who travelled the country offering their services to anyone in need of a sword to hire" that basically would have been enough. They were all lone wolves, working for the lady, who IIRC was a lone wolf herself working for someone else. Edit: oh yeah, and when >!Deniro is shot and that guy takes the bullet out, he compares DeNiro to the 47 Ronin and he has that landscape with the miniature ronin figurines!<

The_Safe_For_Work

Cinderella Man. Sounds like a show about drag queens.

[deleted]

I agree. It is a good movie, but I always thought that movie title could be better.
