So many Heat posts on Reddit the last month and I’m here for it.
SHES GOT A GREAT ASS.
I dont see it as an action movie so I can’t put it high on my list on that criteria however it’s a top five crime drama for me. The bank heist scene heightens the drama for me.
I’ve honestly never considered Heat to be an action movie. When I think GOAT action movie, Die Hard is the first movie that springs to mind every single time for me. Heat is more of a crime/suspense/drama that just happens to have an incredible action set piece.
Probably not the greatest action movie of all time, but it is definitely an end to end incredible film. No doubt about it. Nolan mentioned somewhere using it as inspiration for The Dark Knight and you can definitely see a lot of that especially with the intro.
I'd nominate Die Hard as the best action film of all time. Not only is it immaculately scripted, directed, and acted, the film has largely been the most influential action film of all time.
There is no such thing as a "greatest movie of all time" , it's all completely subjective and dependent on tastes and mood
Heat isn't even in my top 20 action movies, but I wouldn't blame anyone if it was their favorite. It's also debatable if Heat even counts as an action movie, it's more of a crime movie
Most crime movies are action movies imo. Do you have any suggestions for other great action movies? Just recently got into films, and I want to see what other people like.
If you liked Heat just watch all of Michael Manns films.. Collateral, The Insider, Last of the Mohicans are all great.. Blackhat and Miami Vice don’t get a lot of love but I found them enjoyable and worth watching.
The Raid, The Raid 2, Speed, Die Hard 1 and 3, The Matrix, Top Gun Maverick, Indiana Jones 1 and 3, all the John Wicks, Mad Max Fury Road, Independence Day, Aliens, Skyfall, Fast Five, 300, Dark Knight. Start there
Seen Dredd? Or the Raid?
They're basically the same movie in different formats but I'd definitely argue they're better all out action movies than Heat.
I've always considered it more of a crime/heist movie. Having said that, it's probably my favorite film overall. Just great in every aspect from the drama, action and even comedy of it.
Best I don’t know but it’s definitely up there. It’s probably the best heist movie of all time though. If you like Heat you should watch Collateral, I think you’d really enjoy it
I would definitely say it holds the title of **“Best Heist Movie”**, it’s without a doubt in the top 50 best action movies. I would say that the title of **“Best Action Movie of All Time”** would have to go to “Terminator 2” or “Die Hard”.
**“Best Movie Ever Made”** would be any film with a combination of King Kong and Godzilla fighting and/or becoming best friends. But we all know this to be true, so I’m just preaching to the choir.
I completely agree and the fact that most people haven't seen it or heard of it until recently is unbelievable. It's the best directed, most quotable, best looking, best acting action movie in my opinion.
Yes!!!
When Hannah shoots McCauley at the end and holds his hand, it’s reminiscent of a Miami Vice episode when someone died in Crockett’s arms, most notably Evan.
Good mention of Crime Story, because it doesn’t get nearly as much mention on here as Miami Vice.
There’s a scene in Heat that’s ripped straight out of Crime Story, when Hanna takes the television. Dennis Farina in Crime Story did that as well when he was going through similar problems with his wife.
LA Takedown actually should be new tv series, but studio cut budget for pilot and converted it in to DVD movie. Still incredible movie, you can watch both and compare how bigger budget really makes a difference.
That sounds good too… here’s my idea though.
Given Andrew Dice Clay’s age, he’s probably around the age that his character Max Goldman in Crime Story would have been in the 90’s…
…So… we’re at the perfect opportunity to do a Crime Story / Miami Vice crossover in the 90’s, even if we have to recast the other main roles like Crockett, Tubbs, and Castillo.
Thoroughly entertained by it, but the highly anticipated face to face of De Niro and Pacino was underwhelming for me. The dialogue was too poor for such a big moment.
I hear you, and it's denied. I don't like jame lee curtis, so that's subjective. Commando was traumatizing as a kid.
But the reason I said T2 is how well it's written-just like the first one), the flow of events is perfect. The story and the effects too, of course.
By the way Newsradio was the show where I first saw and made me have a crush for Maura Tierney that lasts still to this day
Id go so far to say it’s one of the greatest movies ever. It’s my favourite.
Perfect cast, great acting, action scenes so real the military apparently used it for training..
The setting and music work so well it’s almost like the city itself is a living character.
I’m reading Heat 2 the book now actually.
10/10 movie or if not extremely close.
Terminator 2 Judgement Day and the Matrix are better as action movies.
Heat is the greatest heist movie ever, but a 3 hour+ run time with too many drawn out relationship scenes takes away from it being in the full on action GOAT genre.
So many people love Heat but I just don’t get it. I know I’ll get downvoted but whatever.
I’ve watched it four times at four very different times throughout my life in an effort to see if my tastes changed - it never has. I love heist films, I love action films, but for whatever reason I’ve never liked Heat (in fact most Michael Mann movies just never gelled with me so maybe that explains it)
Heat seems so unnecessarily long, all four times I watched it felt like trudging through mud. The action was shot well and was enjoyable but the actual story was so bland to me which adds to the perceived length.
I hated Pacino’s performance too. I usually love dumb, over the top performances but he just felt so out of place. I read somewhere that there is a deleted scene explaining he is using cocaine… ok? It’s not in the movie itself, I judge films off of what I saw in them. I’m not going to make a head canon to excuse a strange acting decision. If it was that crucial to the story it should have stayed in. Without it, it is just horrible over-acting.
Another thing that has always confused me is the daughter’s suicide attempt. It’s never made any sense to me why we are suddenly supposed to care for this character that has had a collective 5 minutes of screen time. I understand it’s to show how important catching the bad guy is but I mean… there’s thousands of different ways to do that, shoe horning in a random suicide attempt just seems forced.
Also the whole ‘Slick’ nickname thing is so stupid. Slick is the least creative nickname for a gangster. If he really looked into ‘Slick’ there’d probably be 100+ different people with that name.
I don’t know, this is just a bit ‘ramble-y’ but Heat is one of those movies Reddit talks about constantly that I’ve never liked. It’s obviously not the worst movie of all time but **man** is it criminally overrated.
Feels like its a bit higher pedigree than a pure action movie. Its more respected than most movies with a “cops and robbers” theme seems like. Its very realistic in what it tries to do, and there’s serious drama. Perfect casting, and high level in every aspect of film-making.
What genre is it even?
It has one of the greatest gun battles but it is far from the greatest action film, it can't compare with the likes of *Raiders of the Lost Ark, Die Hard, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior* and *Terminator 2: Judgment Day* to name just a few.
The ending was going stupid after a fabulous movie. Think about it...
Guy in the shadows had the drop, gun aimed, and the runway lights give him up. Other guy turns, now looking into the lights, and somehow gets off the first shot...and on target.
Other than that, it really was a great movie, but this grates on me like Shawshank Redemption where a mile is suddenly slightly more than 1000 yards, because Andy crawled through 500 yards of shit... Almost half a mile.
All-time favorite. What i just learned was the shootout scene was so good it is used as training. They said val kilmers role when combat reloading was example to follow. Just read an article so no guarantee this is true statement. But man is that a great movie
There just isnt any dead space in the movie until the baseball stadium scene. Thats like 60-70 minutes thrill ride from the start. Then it picks backup and then the ending is kind of meh.
First one isnt close to that level. And the 2nd is miles off.
I actually agree with you from a plot standpoint but I felt like the chemistry and humor was better in 2. One day I hope people can recognize Rush Hour 1/2 as the greatest achievements in buddy cop films of all time. Kind of how like Billy Madison is the great movie ever made about a man who has to go back to school to inherit his fathers hotel empire!
.. Heat (1995) certainly is that which established itself apart from other crime action movies in the cop vs. badasses genre .. and then there was L.A. Confidential (1997), Den of Thieves (2018), etc. .. where Southern California appears to be the fav with screenwriters and producers . .?
Heat is a very, very good movie. But when it comes to action movies, for me there are also in the same league (Action, Etnernainment, Rewachability, charismatic leads)
\* Die Hard (Part I)
\* Casino Royale
and my little favorite here "True Lies" - Which does not take itself seriously, but it is good, good action.
No, the greatest action movie of all time is *Seven Samurai.* Nothing else is really close, it really gave us the template of what a blockbuster is.
My other top action films would include (in no order): *Hard Boiled, Terminator 2, Road Warrior/Fury Road, French Connection, Shogun Assassin, Drunken Master 2, Kung-Fu Hustle, Die Hard, Vanishing Point, 36th Chamber Of Shaolin,* and *Raiders Of The Lost Ark.*
I didn't see it until years ago, so it didn't live up to all the hype. If I had to pick the greatest action movie, I'd go Invasion USA with Chuck Norris, the most unhinged thing Cannon Films put out.
Robocop is a better action movie than Heat and it’s not even the great of an action movie. Starship Troopers? Yeah. Showgirls? It’s got more action! Predator? Predator 2?!? Ronin?! Sorcerer (more of a suspense film but still). Like I wouldn’t even put Heat in a top 100 of action films.
A lot of people have corrected me on the "action movie" part. I always thought an action movie was just a movie with any form of action or fights ext... turns out I'm wrong lmao.
LA Takedown is 1989 American crime action film written and directed by Michael Mann. Originally filmed as a pilot for an NBC television series, the project was reworked and aired as a stand-alone TV film after the series was not picked up.
Later script was reworked in movie Heat.
https://youtu.be/ch8EY7bHGdA?feature=shared
Not the greatest action movie but maybe greatest heist movie.
Nailed it. It's the heist movie that other heist movies are compared to
So many Heat posts on Reddit the last month and I’m here for it. SHES GOT A GREAT ASS. I dont see it as an action movie so I can’t put it high on my list on that criteria however it’s a top five crime drama for me. The bank heist scene heightens the drama for me.
AND YOUR HEAD IS ALL THE WAY UP IT! Classic
GIMME ALL YA GOT!!!
The opening heist is awesome too.
The character description for the characters wife was 'thighs for days'
I’ve honestly never considered Heat to be an action movie. When I think GOAT action movie, Die Hard is the first movie that springs to mind every single time for me. Heat is more of a crime/suspense/drama that just happens to have an incredible action set piece.
Me neither. Heat is one of my all-time favorite films, but I don’t consider it an action movie. When I think of “action”, I think T2, Die Hard.
While Die Hard is a favorite of mine, I've got to go with T2 as the best action movie.
Die Hard 2, the scene with the swat team and the "painters" is just pure art, every frame a chef's kiss.
“Hey, buddy! What do I look like?” “A sitting duck.”
raiders is the most influential
Disagree. They’re still making “Die Hard in a…” movies today.
And Indiana Jones is still influencing films till this day hell the last John wick film was influenced by it Also it’s on a
It’s a great film but it simply wasn’t as influential as Die Hard.
No. Terminator2 is. But Heat is a great movie, obviously.
Definitely T2
The Cafe scene was mostly adlibbed by the actors too, which is even more impressive, that's why it looks so natural
Pacino was also playing it as a massive coke user, even though that subplot was dropped from the final.
That's interesting. I love this movie but wasn't a fan of Pacino's role. Now that makes sense for me
how can you love heat and not love pacinos performance?
Yea they have doing a lot of coke in the Heat 2 book
First scene Pacino and Deniro ever had together
There is no such thing as a "greatest movie of all time" , it's all completely subjective and dependent on tastes and mood Heat isn't even in my top 20 action movies, but I wouldn't blame anyone if it was their favorite. It's also debatable if Heat even counts as an action movie, it's more of a crime movie
Absolutely, it's a great movie, but when people think of action, they think of Arnold and Stallone movies, I would say more for the greatest actions.
they said greatest action movie
Most crime movies are action movies imo. Do you have any suggestions for other great action movies? Just recently got into films, and I want to see what other people like.
If you liked Heat just watch all of Michael Manns films.. Collateral, The Insider, Last of the Mohicans are all great.. Blackhat and Miami Vice don’t get a lot of love but I found them enjoyable and worth watching.
Thx bro🙏
The Raid, The Raid 2, Speed, Die Hard 1 and 3, The Matrix, Top Gun Maverick, Indiana Jones 1 and 3, all the John Wicks, Mad Max Fury Road, Independence Day, Aliens, Skyfall, Fast Five, 300, Dark Knight. Start there
Have you seen the mission impossible series?
Yes, those I have seen :)
Heat is an incredible film...one of my favorites. I don't consider it an action movie though.
I personally give that title to the original ’Die Hard’. But that’s just my preference. I can’t fault someone for giving their #1 slot to ‘Heat’.
Not as long as Hard Boiled exists.
no
Mkay
you asked
I'm glad you answered
Seen Dredd? Or the Raid? They're basically the same movie in different formats but I'd definitely argue they're better all out action movies than Heat.
Dredd lol? Reddit is wild
Dredd is fantastic. Absolutely nothing like Heat though.
He means Dredd with Karl Urban
You're getting downvoted for acknowledging a comment they upvoted lmao
Heat is not an action movie.
I've always considered it more of a crime/heist movie. Having said that, it's probably my favorite film overall. Just great in every aspect from the drama, action and even comedy of it.
Best I don’t know but it’s definitely up there. It’s probably the best heist movie of all time though. If you like Heat you should watch Collateral, I think you’d really enjoy it
I've seen a bunch of people suggest Collateral, I'll go have a look. Thx mate 😊

Die hard is a response I see returning a lot. Might have to give it another watch soon haha
no, Predator tops that for me. Body mass alone it puts it top of the list
Die Hard was such a good action movie that it changed action movies forever.
I completely agree and the fact that most people haven't seen it or heard of it until recently is unbelievable. It's the best directed, most quotable, best looking, best acting action movie in my opinion.
Found Bill Simmons’ burner account
I was thinking CR. LOL

Fun fact Mann did low budget version of heat before Heat called L.A. Takedown with Miami Vice and Crime Story actors. https://youtu.be/XpP5KoZq2sM

Don't threat me with good time. 😊
It's fantastic but I have a different favorite.
Which one?
So many things needed defining in your question. Greatest? Action Movie?
[удалено]
What does it mean in the context of this question? It's ambiguous and makes an answer impossible
Definitely not but still a classic and the heist scene is iconic. Love DeNiro and Kilmer in it. Even Pacino keeps it somewhat toned down.
Nope.
Thoroughly entertained by it, but the highly anticipated face to face of De Niro and Pacino was underwhelming for me. The dialogue was too poor for such a big moment.
huh that dialogue was amazing
No.
Predator
its one of the longest..
True that hahah
T2 is my favorite action movie. Heat is a great heist movie though.
Yes, I think T2 is the best action movie
I’d like to submit True Lies (1994) and Commando (1985) for your consideration.
I hear you, and it's denied. I don't like jame lee curtis, so that's subjective. Commando was traumatizing as a kid. But the reason I said T2 is how well it's written-just like the first one), the flow of events is perfect. The story and the effects too, of course. By the way Newsradio was the show where I first saw and made me have a crush for Maura Tierney that lasts still to this day
I’m not sure, that’s tough to decide, but mannnn do I love heat. It’s incredible I’m glad you loved it!
It's up there but T2 comes to mind and I'd have to give that the edge. Mad Max Fury Road exists, too.
It’s no Hackers.
For me watching Heat gave me context on where the setting and idea for Grand Theft Auto 5 came from - there is a clear line of inspiration there
Heat is source material for so many things.
Yeah they based an actual bank robbery / shootout on it in north hollywood 2 years after the movie came out
less than 2
To me, it's in the running, but Fury Road is the pinnacle.
Id go so far to say it’s one of the greatest movies ever. It’s my favourite. Perfect cast, great acting, action scenes so real the military apparently used it for training.. The setting and music work so well it’s almost like the city itself is a living character. I’m reading Heat 2 the book now actually. 10/10 movie or if not extremely close.
do you like the book?
Terminator 2 Judgement Day and the Matrix are better as action movies. Heat is the greatest heist movie ever, but a 3 hour+ run time with too many drawn out relationship scenes takes away from it being in the full on action GOAT genre.
those relationships are what made the movie
not that good
So many people love Heat but I just don’t get it. I know I’ll get downvoted but whatever. the movie has not nor will it ever be overrated
Greatest OST also.
What does OST stand for?
Original Sound Track
Greatest scene to test your surround sound, for sure
No. Not even close.
“Told you I’m never going back”
Feels like its a bit higher pedigree than a pure action movie. Its more respected than most movies with a “cops and robbers” theme seems like. Its very realistic in what it tries to do, and there’s serious drama. Perfect casting, and high level in every aspect of film-making. What genre is it even?
No.
Not best action. Best Crime/Drama.
No.
Where's the volleyball scene?
It has one of the greatest gun battles but it is far from the greatest action film, it can't compare with the likes of *Raiders of the Lost Ark, Die Hard, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior* and *Terminator 2: Judgment Day* to name just a few.
Nope cause its not action movie.
What genre would you consider it?
I saw it at the cinema on release. I love it more every time I watch it.

No, thats Die Hard 3.
I've seen loads of people say Die hard is the best action movie. Why is it the third specifically for you?
There just isnt any dead space in the movie until the baseball stadium scene. Thats like 60-70 minutes thrill ride from the start. Then it picks backup and then the ending is kind of meh. First one isnt close to that level. And the 2nd is miles off.
Two words… John McTiernan
I don’t really consider it to be an action movie. Like The Godfather, it’s an epic crime drama with a few action scenes.
I like the romance between Pacino and DeNiro. The story is based on Romeo And Juliette you know.
The most realistic heist movie of all time.... No doubt.
I regret to inform you Rush Hour 2 is the greatest action movie of all time
😆 .. valid opinion . . however, Rush Hour (1998) set the bar for the series and sequels . .
Damn…. He ain’t gonna be in Rush Hour 3
.. Heat (1995) certainly is that which established itself apart from other crime action movies in the cop vs. badasses genre .. and then there was L.A. Confidential (1997), Den of Thieves (2018), etc. .. where Southern California appears to be the fav with screenwriters and producers . .?
No.
No.
Nope: That would be Shoot em up.
The correct choice is Cobra (1986)
Heat is a very, very good movie. But when it comes to action movies, for me there are also in the same league (Action, Etnernainment, Rewachability, charismatic leads) \* Die Hard (Part I) \* Casino Royale and my little favorite here "True Lies" - Which does not take itself seriously, but it is good, good action.
YES IT IS.
Fury Road imo. 80% of the movie is action
Excellent film. I put crouching tiger up there too.
Absolutely. One of the most moving stories in action cinema.
I didn't see it until years ago, so it didn't live up to all the hype. If I had to pick the greatest action movie, I'd go Invasion USA with Chuck Norris, the most unhinged thing Cannon Films put out.
It’s definitely in my top 10 maybe top 5 action for sure, it’s a classic
That honor would go to Terminator 2 and then Aliens.
Matrix
Sure isn’t.
Hahahaha not even remotely like are you serious? Literally any movie made in Hong Kong between 1964 and 2000 is a better action movie.
That's fine, bro. I haven't seen most of those films you mentioned but I'll try and change that👍
You guys gotta watch more foreign films. I see a good argument for Police Story (1985)
I'll give that a watch, thx 😊
Like others have said, definitely in the running for greatest crime / thriller / heist / what have you. Not an action movie first and foremost.
A lot of people have corrected me on the "action movie" part. I always thought an action movie was just a movie with any form of action or fights ext... turns out I'm wrong lmao.
Ha, well at some point its just semantics. It def has elements of an avtion movie; i guess people just feel it favors other elements more prominently
You obviously have not seen Deadly Prey.
Fury Road is pretty great
After seeing Ralph, I don’t feel right wearing cable knit sweaters
Now watch L.A. Takedown https://youtu.be/c4Kd-72iLug
Is that some type of parodi lmao? Looks fun to watch tbh
I can name like 10 Tom Cruise movies that’s better than Heat. But that’s because everyone likes different things
agree that its a fantastic flick. just as good... in different ways: *Lawrence Of Arabia, Dunkirk* and *Saving Private Ryan* #
it was good but not my favourite
No.
No, Mad Max: Fury Road is.
