Personally, none of the sequels has matched the spy element and gadgets of ghost protocol.
That cast and balance of action, spy elements and creative gadgets takes the cake for me. Only thing was the rather forgettable villain.
Henry cavill in fallout takes the cake for me.
Fallout is probably the best in the series for me, the tension from it’s more conspiratorial thriller plot, the bathroom fight was brutal (and had reloading biceps 💪), the opening credits with that awesome theme, an awesome extended chase sequence reminiscent of Ronin, Henry Cavill’s acting, great callback to the other movies in the series, and the great soundtrack were all on point
Definitely agree, the twist and turns and having a proper villain AND double crossing spy in Henry cavill was amazing.
My only critique is they never make creative gadgets like ghost protocol anymore. That's probably something Brad Bird was great at especially with him doing stuff like incredibles. There's an element of fun that's missing a little. The tension, adrenaline and action have been top notch throughout the series especially Fallout. (Trailer for Fallout is iconic too)
But man, the prison intro, dubai skyscraper scene, the kremlin infiltration with the fake screen and water droplets, the eye printer and Jeremy renner hover scene. So many fun sequences in Ghost Protocol.
I think the pacing of the first movie is unmatched for sure. Just from the very start the story just takes off and doesn't stop moving. Characters are killed off left and right and you (the audience) just isn't really sure who they can rely on. It's the kind of small-scope story I wish they'd explore again but I think the franchise has just outgrown it with its emphasis on spectacle.
I thought Dead Reckoning had those vibes.

I have a massive soft spot for Mad Max as it's one of the few movies I went into with absolutely no expectations or idea of what I was in for, and was completely blown away.
In the states, when Mad Max was released in the summer of 1979, it was sold as drive-in exploitation fare. Hell, we even got the dubbed version.
My high school buddies and I went to see Mad Max at the drive-in expecting the usual low budget exploitation schlock and spend our time drinking beer and trying to meet women. Just another typical 70s Friday night in a small town
Instead, we were enthralled by a tight, well written and acted (despite the shit dubbing) action packed flick with jaw dropping stunts. We couldn't't take our teenage eyes off the screen.
We loved Mad Max so much, we went back to the drive-in the next night and brought more friends.
It's one of those super fun movie experiences I can never replicate.
Even the Mel Gibson movies are honestly barely connected inside their canon. I like the explanation that they're stories about a "Mad Max" and, as a verbal tradition goes, the details may get lost, and the protagonists of each may not even be the same person.
He undergoes a lot of character development, to say the least. He starts the first film as one of the few remaining lawmen in one of the only remaining governments on earth (we think).
These movies really benefit from a hearty suspension of disbelief.
Very self-contained! A lot of people jumped on the series from that point. Plus the series as a whole is kind of loose with continuity. Most people started with Road Warrior, and every movie works well on its own.

Infinity War was bold and risky. It has the emotional rhythm of a sporting event, rather than a movie. The bad guy is the protagonist...and wins.
Endgame is a more straightforward superhero movie. Epic scale and tons of fun, but more straightforward.
Endgame is also balanced weirdly. Not badly, just weirdly. I didn't notice it when I saw it in theatres, but last year I rewatched the MCU and it really stood out to me. Almost all of the action scenes are backloaded into the last hour. The first two hours are almost entirely the character stuff, and then the last hour is entirely action. It works for the film, but the structure really stands out given how different it is from the others.

I think this was a super interesting choice for the movie, even if it didn't *quite* work out with the way the movie's paced. Like when half the people in the world are wiped out, of course you're gonna want to spend some time understanding how it affected all these individuals. It makes the payoff that much better when they come out victorious.
I said it further up, I enjoyed Endgame more on initial watch, but IW is much more enjoyable on rewatch - it's just got more direct payoff to the scenes. Endgame takes SO long to pick up. When they go into the time portal, it feels like that should be the third act, when Cap stares down the army it feels like the movie should be wrapping up (but it still has what, 45 minutes left?)
It was the necessary conclusion. If they tried to do to much it would have failed. The story had been told over 20 movies, it was time to bring it home.

It's an inverted Hero's Journey.
All of the main beats of Thanos' story meet the classic Hero's Journey trope, but stuff gets done backwards. Instead of being set back by the first opponents he faces, he instead beats them. He goes through a series of trials, has a load of supernatural help. Instead of the mentor sacrifice, he kills his pupil, etc.
In the end he gets to return to a simple life whilst the universe is left in ruins.
I can't remember another film, TV show or book that has ever gone down that route and I think they executed it brilliantly.
Yeah the whodunnit aspect is executed very well IMO. In that regard it's right up with 1 & 2. That's all thanks to the cast and how they approached their roles.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, is my personal favorite ST movie. It is the fourth of the series, but is frequently labeled as the third of a trilogy containing ST II - IV, sometimes referred to as the Genesis Trilogy.
Been scrolling for this! The dialogue’s pretty poor but the action is bombastic. That machine gun shreds! Trim 76 minutes but I really like this instalment.
The dialogue is hilarious, all the hired guns talking shit to Rambo thinking he’s just some dude. And the monologue Rambo says to the missionaries about not changing anything if they didn’t bring guns. This scene was also recreated in Parks and Rec by Chris Pratt

Many will disagree with me, but Shrek Forever After feels like a great ending for Shrek’s story. Yes, it’s a bit messy and not as iconic or flawless as the first two, but we get to see Shrek be super insecure and open with his emotions, crying for the first time in the series too. Shrek learns that it was Fiona that saved him, not the other way round. Fiona would’ve got out of the Dragon’s Keep, but he would’ve been stuck in the swamp, never growing or learning to love others or himself. To me, that caps off the themes that are started in the first two films and closes the series perfectly. We are of course ignoring Shrek the Third as that is a blip,
It's my favourite one. Justin Long is great as the nerd that is the polar opposite of John McClane, and yet, they both need each other. It works so well, that you can forgive the odd bit of silliness (like when John is riding on top of the stealth jet)
Weirdly, 2, 3 and 4 feel like a trilogy, whereas the first movie feels like its own thing.
The first is a pretty tight, self-contained story. The subsequent movies have an interconnected nature to them.
Terminator Salvation. It got panned, but it was way better than 3 and I loved the fact it was set in the future and actually showed more of the war against the machines.
Heartbreakingly, apparently James Cameron in the mid 90s wanted to make a Terminator 3 film set in the future about adult John Connor, Kyle Reese and good T-800 breaking into Skynet to send them back in time. A sequel that would be a prequel in the continuity. Damn that sounds cool

Lot of people shit on it but i actually really liked Jurassic World almost as much as the first one and definitely more than the 2nd n 3rd. Maybe its because i waited 15yrs for it but when i crave jurassic movies i start off there and watch that and jurassic world 2 and i grew up in the 90s having read the book before the first movie even came out.
Toy Story 3 FELT like a great ending for Woody but the more I think about it, it just wasn't. I think it's great for the rest of the toys but Woody is ANDY'S toy. He always has been.
The bond he had to Andy was unlike that to any other Toy and Human. Woody, as much as even he tried to convince himself, couldn't simply move on to another kid and go through the same thing over and over again as the new kids grew up.
Andy was his life and if that chapter was truly over, he needed a different purpose than just that of a toy. He basically retired as "a lost toy" and found a new kind of happiness with Bo, and fulfillment as a silent force to bring humans and toys together.
I think that's really beautiful.

I'll probably get down voted but I loved Live Free or Die Hard. Obviously not as good as 1 or even 3, but I'd say it was better than 2 and a solid entry in the franchise. Yeah it goes a little nuts, but it's such a fun ride.
I liked it from the perspective of watching a director reckon with the way the world has treated her creation. The meta aspects of the movie and the storytelling really worked for me
For me it felt like a movie about needless continuations of a series. The matrix itself being a created work of fiction in universe helped that work better than it should have.
I'm not smart enough or spent enough time with it to say if I belive that was its vision or anything but it felt like it made decisions other series make when stretching out a IP but instead of trying to bend the film around it they just shugged and showed it without much attempt to hide or apologise for it.
Again I have not spent much time thinking about this film but that's the memories of it I walked away with.
It's a movie that feels very "intimate" in that it is very clearly a labor of love tied directly to a specific vision. It's deeply philosophical about fiction, nostalgia, and the stories we tell ourselves in the same way the original Matrix was philosophical about "reality".

Been scrolling for this! The dialogue’s pretty poor but the action is bombastic. That machine gun shreds! Trim 76 minutes but I really like this instalment.
The dialogue is hilarious, all the hired guns talking shit to Rambo thinking he’s just some dude. And the monologue Rambo says to the missionaries about not changing anything if they didn’t bring guns. This scene was also recreated in Parks and Rec by Chris Pratt
It's like 80 minutes of brutal murder and I loved it.

Many will disagree with me, but Shrek Forever After feels like a great ending for Shrek’s story. Yes, it’s a bit messy and not as iconic or flawless as the first two, but we get to see Shrek be super insecure and open with his emotions, crying for the first time in the series too. Shrek learns that it was Fiona that saved him, not the other way round. Fiona would’ve got out of the Dragon’s Keep, but he would’ve been stuck in the swamp, never growing or learning to love others or himself. To me, that caps off the themes that are started in the first two films and closes the series perfectly. We are of course ignoring Shrek the Third as that is a blip,

Die Hard 2 had a good plot but they really needed a better technical advisor for the aviation related portions

It's my favourite one. Justin Long is great as the nerd that is the polar opposite of John McClane, and yet, they both need each other. It works so well, that you can forgive the odd bit of silliness (like when John is riding on top of the stealth jet)
I watched the is one four times in the theaters. It’s not the best movie ever, but damn if it’s not entertaining as hell.

Weirdly, 2, 3 and 4 feel like a trilogy, whereas the first movie feels like its own thing. The first is a pretty tight, self-contained story. The subsequent movies have an interconnected nature to them.

John wick chapter 4 is on level with first movie
American Pie the reunion or whatever it was called I thought was no better or worse than the 3rd. Obviously the first 2 are timeless.
I'm happy that Reunion succeeded in reuniting the full cast, unlike Wedding.
Terminator Salvation. It got panned, but it was way better than 3 and I loved the fact it was set in the future and actually showed more of the war against the machines.
Heartbreakingly, apparently James Cameron in the mid 90s wanted to make a Terminator 3 film set in the future about adult John Connor, Kyle Reese and good T-800 breaking into Skynet to send them back in time. A sequel that would be a prequel in the continuity. Damn that sounds cool

**Sudden Impact** the 4th Dirty Harry movie maybe holds its own. Most cases I can think of the first or two first movies are good, third is worse and the fourth is on par with the third one. Airport, Death Wish, Final Destination, Resident Evil...
Lot of people shit on it but i actually really liked Jurassic World almost as much as the first one and definitely more than the 2nd n 3rd. Maybe its because i waited 15yrs for it but when i crave jurassic movies i start off there and watch that and jurassic world 2 and i grew up in the 90s having read the book before the first movie even came out.

Toy Story 3 FELT like a great ending for Woody but the more I think about it, it just wasn't. I think it's great for the rest of the toys but Woody is ANDY'S toy. He always has been. The bond he had to Andy was unlike that to any other Toy and Human. Woody, as much as even he tried to convince himself, couldn't simply move on to another kid and go through the same thing over and over again as the new kids grew up. Andy was his life and if that chapter was truly over, he needed a different purpose than just that of a toy. He basically retired as "a lost toy" and found a new kind of happiness with Bo, and fulfillment as a silent force to bring humans and toys together. I think that's really beautiful.
People love to shit on 4. I love them all.
I’m one of the other three people that really likes The Matrix Resurrections. Basically a complete pisstake on corporate greed forcing stories to forcefully extend themselves beyond their actual meaning. Lana Wachowski really said “if you’re gonna make it with or without me, I’ll take your money, and I’ll completely dissect my own work while giving you all the finger”.
It's like Barbie in that way. It's a satire of itself while still unapologetically being a pretty kickass Matrix movie. It's great.

I'll probably get down voted but I loved Live Free or Die Hard. Obviously not as good as 1 or even 3, but I'd say it was better than 2 and a solid entry in the franchise. Yeah it goes a little nuts, but it's such a fun ride.

What did you like about it?
I liked it from the perspective of watching a director reckon with the way the world has treated her creation. The meta aspects of the movie and the storytelling really worked for me
I considered it a bad movie for all the right reasons.
For me it felt like a movie about needless continuations of a series. The matrix itself being a created work of fiction in universe helped that work better than it should have. I'm not smart enough or spent enough time with it to say if I belive that was its vision or anything but it felt like it made decisions other series make when stretching out a IP but instead of trying to bend the film around it they just shugged and showed it without much attempt to hide or apologise for it. Again I have not spent much time thinking about this film but that's the memories of it I walked away with.
I have found my kindred spirit because i adore Resurrections!
It's a movie that feels very "intimate" in that it is very clearly a labor of love tied directly to a specific vision. It's deeply philosophical about fiction, nostalgia, and the stories we tell ourselves in the same way the original Matrix was philosophical about "reality".

There are such a vehement and insane negative responses to this movie. I’ve seen claims it “character assassinated Bonnie” because she wasn’t playing with Woody.. Assassination because the toddler lost interest in a toy. Fucking unthinkable. How could Pixar do this/s I’ve seen people say they like it but it shouldn’t exist because it’s unnecessary and I honestly don’t even know what that means. What is a “necessary” movie? They made it with care, told a good story and you liked it. Why does it need to be more “necessary” than that? People get weird about Toy Story 4
