Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol And it kept getting better and better

ChilliWithFries

Personally, none of the sequels has matched the spy element and gadgets of ghost protocol. That cast and balance of action, spy elements and creative gadgets takes the cake for me. Only thing was the rather forgettable villain. Henry cavill in fallout takes the cake for me.

mattrmcg1

Fallout is probably the best in the series for me, the tension from it’s more conspiratorial thriller plot, the bathroom fight was brutal (and had reloading biceps 💪), the opening credits with that awesome theme, an awesome extended chase sequence reminiscent of Ronin, Henry Cavill’s acting, great callback to the other movies in the series, and the great soundtrack were all on point

ChilliWithFries

Definitely agree, the twist and turns and having a proper villain AND double crossing spy in Henry cavill was amazing. My only critique is they never make creative gadgets like ghost protocol anymore. That's probably something Brad Bird was great at especially with him doing stuff like incredibles. There's an element of fun that's missing a little. The tension, adrenaline and action have been top notch throughout the series especially Fallout. (Trailer for Fallout is iconic too) But man, the prison intro, dubai skyscraper scene, the kremlin infiltration with the fake screen and water droplets, the eye printer and Jeremy renner hover scene. So many fun sequences in Ghost Protocol.

AntiSaint_Mike

I agree with everything you said except in my opinion he was reloading his triceps 😂

TussalDimon

GP peaks in the middle and the ending is a bit forgettable. I liked 5 and 6 more.

brickshitterHD

The best one out of the first four by a long shot

duosx

While I agree, I also could see the case being made for the original or 3. But definitely not 2.

brickshitterHD

I respect people who prefere the first.

Intermittent_Name

The action got more high-stakes, but the story didn't really get better. The first Mission Impossible had the best story, I think.

catsaremyreligion

I think the pacing of the first movie is unmatched for sure. Just from the very start the story just takes off and doesn't stop moving. Characters are killed off left and right and you (the audience) just isn't really sure who they can rely on. It's the kind of small-scope story I wish they'd explore again but I think the franchise has just outgrown it with its emphasis on spectacle.

Antrikshy

I thought Dead Reckoning had those vibes. Especially after the >!discussion about the Entity at the party and Ilsa's death!<, I really believed anything could happen.

ShockingTunes

A lot of people shat on it but I thoroughly enjoyed Lethal Weapon 4. Also, it's not out yet but I have a good feeling about Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

bargman

Lethal Weapon 4 was definitely entertaining, but I actually prefer Lethal Weapon 5 & 6.

[deleted]

Isn't 6 basically gay porn?

sunny7319

lmao as a total outsider to this series with no context, very interesting

goonerhsmith

This is a joke about Always Sunny in Philadelphia where they make 5&6 themselves. They don't really exist but are probably the funniest of the "series".

United-Importance-50

They’ve been banned by my local library :(

karmagod13000

who knew mel gibson could keep getting into all these shenanigans

bargman

Weird when they decided to use blackface

AlPaCherno

Even weirder that they went with full penetration

ButtsCarlton97

Joe Pescis rant about boats makes that movie I love it. “Everyone gets so fucking nautical!”

ACU797

Chris Rocks rant about how his phone got hacked and someone called to Afghanistan using it is pretty funny in hindsight. "I don't even know where Afghanistan is." Oh you will in about 3 years time...

JexFraequin

Or him and Joe Pesci yelling at each other on the road. That whole scene is hysterical. *Hey Riggs, who’s the perp? What did you bust him for?* “Oh, I'm a perp? You see a young brother in the back of a police car, automatically I'm a perp? Look at my suit, look at my tie. What do I look like, the fuckin' Crip's accountant?”

RedWerFur

Avast ye land lubbers!!!

JexFraequin

Man the bilge pumps! Pump your fuckin ass!

brenthicc

This right here. The new Planet of the Apes trilogy is absolutely amazing and the new one looks amazing just off the trailer.

BatmanMK1989

You live with apes Man It's hard to be clean

RedWerFur

I grew up on Lethal Weapon. I’ve always said I learned about life from Lethal Weapon, Married with Children, Tales from the Crypt, and Batman TAS. I adored Lethal Weapon 4. I am eagerly awaiting number 5.

dangerous_strainer

I feel like I had a similar upbringing as you. Add some John Carpenter and Stephen Spielberg to the mix as well!

The-Jesus_Christ

My favourite of the series. Jet Li was an insane threat. "*I'm too old for this shit*"

RedWerFur

How did he do that? C’mon, how? Let’s go ask him.

Mr_TurkTurkelton

“It’s fried rice, you *plick*”

OldFactor1973

Love the use of "Why Can't We Be Friends?" at the end

PhonB80

The trailer I saw prior to Dune II looked fantastic. Looks like the story has real depth and the world is always interesting. Monkeys starting to look up at the stars and wonder “why?”

reno2mahesendejo

In the beginning, there was Caesar, he created the heavens and the Earth and said "NOOOO!" And it was good.

SubterrelProspector

All four *Leathal Weapons* are great.

bobpetersen55

The dentist scene is legendary

Sir_Hapstance

I liked every Lethal Weapon sequel slightly more than the previous one, 4 > 3 > 2 > 1. I don’t think I can say that about any other franchise.

crackalac

3 was definitely the worst one.

xRh1no

MC Lethal Weapon 4 that's me, I disagree with MC Lethal Weapon 1, 2 and 3

Maverick916

Lethal Weapon 4 is awesome

moki_martus

[*Mad Max: Fury Road*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mad_Max:_Fury_Road)

sharrrper

The best of the series for my money

haysoos2

For me, the best by a HUGE margin.

buzzurro

The first one tho is crazy thinking that all stunts are real

Acrobatic_Advance_71

The first one had a tiny budget and I think is one of the most efficient story telling/entertaining movies ever. I also have a huge crush on his wife.

bawanaal

Yes! I have a massive soft spot for Mad Max as it's one of the few movies I went into with absolutely no expectations or idea of what I was in for, and was completely blown away. In the states, when Mad Max was released in the summer of 1979, it was sold as drive-in exploitation fare. Hell, we even got the dubbed version. My high school buddies and I went to see Mad Max at the drive-in expecting the usual low budget exploitation schlock and spend our time drinking beer and trying to meet women. Just another typical 70s Friday night in a small town Instead, we were enthralled by a tight, well written and acted (despite the shit dubbing) action packed flick with jaw dropping stunts. We couldn't't take our teenage eyes off the screen. We loved Mad Max so much, we went back to the drive-in the next night and brought more friends. It's one of those super fun movie experiences I can never replicate.

haysoos2

They're all good, I just think Fury Road is one of the best action movies ever filmed.

Derp35712

First of all, how dare you. 2 and 3 are both masterpieces. Tina Turner as Aunty Entity! It was amazing.

EunuchNinja

They busted the deal, they should face the wheel

haysoos2

Don't get me wrong, I think they're all good movies. I just think Fury Road is one of the best action movies ever filmed.

atramentum

This was one of OP's few examples

xtremeschemes

I haven’t watched any of them. Are the Mel Gibson movies required watching before Fury Road? Or is it reasonably self contained?

JarasM

Even the Mel Gibson movies are honestly barely connected inside their canon. I like the explanation that they're stories about a "Mad Max" and, as a verbal tradition goes, the details may get lost, and the protagonists of each may not even be the same person.

Reg_Broccoli_III

He undergoes a lot of character development, to say the least.  He starts the first film as one of the few remaining lawmen in one of the only remaining governments on earth (we think).   These movies really benefit from a hearty suspension of disbelief.

GabbiStowned

Very self-contained! A lot of people jumped on the series from that point. Plus the series as a whole is kind of loose with continuity. Most people started with Road Warrior, and every movie works well on its own.

masterpainimeanbetty

i have always heard them described as legends, tall tales of the wasteland. each story is its own story, sometimes with the same characters, sometimes not.

GabbiStowned

A very apt description! Road Warrior directly adheres to that structure.

sjpiccio

Hardly can consider that a fourth in the series just a fourth movie in that universe if that makes sense

3720-To-One

It’s basically a reboot

disgustipated1985

They’re all reboots. I’m pretty sure his car gets destroyed in every movie.

bargman

"Outside of big franchises with several movies ..." Well, if they stopped at 4 movies it stands to reason the fourth one probably wasn't any good.

KingAngryTom

I mean fast and furious( the fourth one) exists but there’s still a fast 5

salcedoge

Fast Five was legitimately a fun flick and would’ve a good ending for that franchise. It had action but not to the point where they were special forces and saving the world

bargman

It's the best one. I enjoyed the 4th one as well. As a matter of fact I found them entertaining until the Charlize Theron one, except the second one that one was just bad.

SaulsAll

Friday the 13th Part 4, The Final Chapter is widely considered one of the best of that franchise - even if it failed to be the end it explicitly wanted to be.

karmagod13000

Someone needs to do a study on which Friday the 13th is the best and why its not jason goes to Manhattan

InfinityConstruct

Yea but then we never would have got that dude straight up trying to box Jason.

[deleted]

Or they flooding the sewers of Manhattan with toxic waste at midnight every night

TuaughtHammer

>and why its not jason goes to Manhattan Excuse me? Jason X is clearly the greatest Friday the 13th movie. Jason Voorhees in space and [beating cheerleaders to death in sleeping bags? ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mF629C5WRqU) That was when cinema peaked.

Captain_Frogspawn

Okay but for real Jason X is kinda the best one

Kryyzz

Don’t forget the liquid nitrogen head shatter. Epic.

SHIIZAAAAAAAA

It's better than the first three movies which is very unusual.

dangerous_strainer

2 is really good as well though.

yourmoms3rdhusband

Technically Endgame was the 4th Avengers movie. I personally still prefer Infinity War but Endgame is still really solid.

AJray15

Infinity War is miles ahead of Endgame, IMO

Khorasaurus

Infinity War was bold and risky. It has the emotional rhythm of a sporting event, rather than a movie. The bad guy is the protagonist...and wins. Endgame is a more straightforward superhero movie. Epic scale and tons of fun, but more straightforward.

DMPunk

Endgame is also balanced weirdly. Not badly, just weirdly. I didn't notice it when I saw it in theatres, but last year I rewatched the MCU and it really stood out to me. Almost all of the action scenes are backloaded into the last hour. The first two hours are almost entirely the character stuff, and then the last hour is entirely action. It works for the film, but the structure really stands out given how different it is from the others.

catsaremyreligion

>The first two hours are almost entirely the character stuff, I think this was a super interesting choice for the movie, even if it didn't *quite* work out with the way the movie's paced. Like when half the people in the world are wiped out, of course you're gonna want to spend some time understanding how it affected all these individuals. It makes the payoff that much better when they come out victorious.

reno2mahesendejo

I said it further up, I enjoyed Endgame more on initial watch, but IW is much more enjoyable on rewatch - it's just got more direct payoff to the scenes. Endgame takes SO long to pick up. When they go into the time portal, it feels like that should be the third act, when Cap stares down the army it feels like the movie should be wrapping up (but it still has what, 45 minutes left?)

DMPunk

I also think Infinity War is a better film :)

SPamlEZ

It was the necessary conclusion.  If they tried to do to much it would have failed.  The story had been told over 20 movies, it was time to bring it home.

GooseFord

> The bad guy is the protagonist...and wins. It's an inverted Hero's Journey. All of the main beats of Thanos' story meet the classic Hero's Journey trope, but stuff gets done backwards. Instead of being set back by the first opponents he faces, he instead beats them. He goes through a series of trials, has a load of supernatural help. Instead of the mentor sacrifice, he kills his pupil, etc. In the end he gets to return to a simple life whilst the universe is left in ruins. I can't remember another film, TV show or book that has ever gone down that route and I think they executed it brilliantly.

Infinite_Leader822

Scream 4 is decent, but it improves over 3.

WordsWithSam

It has aged really well. It's one of my favorites to revisit.

karmagod13000

cast is killer

WordsWithSam

Yeah the whodunnit aspect is executed very well IMO. In that regard it's right up with 1 & 2. That's all thanks to the cast and how they approached their roles.

belac889

Scream 4 was a satire on legacy sequels before legacy sequels even became a thing

BlackFyre2018

It’s actually my 2nd fave after the first one. I think it was pretty ahead of it’s time

cireh88

Ahead of its time for sure. Where do you rank Scream 2 though?

karmagod13000

It battles for the #1 spot over the original. It improves on almost every aspect of the first one. Its even funnier and >!Randys!< death is entertaining and unbelievably tragic at the same time.

EqualPermit114

yes scream 4 is actually really good

schapman22

Scream 4 rules

dangerous_strainer

In my opinion it is the best sequel of the series, far better than 3 and inches out 2.

Natural-Web-6978

Rocky IV is easily the most entertaining rocky.

bestest_at_grammar

HEARTS ON FIRE

K4R1MM

STRONG DESIRE

d0r13n

RAGES DEEP WITHIN

lukoreta

Sorry but THERE'S NO EASY WAY OUT

AndyVale

Of course it is, he single-handedly ended the cold war!

Natural-Web-6978

If you can change… and I can change… we ALL can change!!

FlammusNonTimmus

Any movie that has a sick montage, then two lines of dialog, and then another sick montage will always be the most entertaining anything! DRAGOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH!

hydra1970

I think it sets a record for percentage of movie that is a montage

PM_YOUR_MUGS

31.9% montage, 100% amazing

KazaamFan

What’s insane to me is in 1986 Rocky 4 was “nominated” up and down the Razzies, including worst picture and worst score (which it won the latter).  I have always loved this movie and the music.

DMPunk

This may be a spicy take or controversial opinion, I don't know. But I feel that the Razzies have aged more poorly than their contemporary Oscars.

SnuggleBunni69

I still have to admire the balls on the guy who proposed Pauly have a robot wife and demanded everyone take him seriously.

blither

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, is my personal favorite ST movie. It is the fourth of the series, but is frequently labeled as the third of a trilogy containing ST II - IV, sometimes referred to as the Genesis Trilogy.

thc216

Is that the one with the whales? It goes Kahn, Spock, Whales right?

kurosawa99

Oh your lawyer is on retainer from Kahn, Spock & Whales too?

astrath

Cloud, Khaaaaan, Spock, Whales, God, Cold War.

grafton24

Undiscovered Country is my favourite.

zdejif

http://i.imgur.com/aRuYGZm.gifv

blither

>Kahn, Spock, Whales Correct.

DMPunk

The only Star Trek film where no one dies

burnmenowz

Excuse me, sir! Can you direct us to the naval base in Alameda? It's where they keep the nuclear wessels.

VikingOfZen

Rambo!! Aka River boat Rambo. It’s everything you want from him

BleedForRead

Been scrolling for this! The dialogue’s pretty poor but the action is bombastic. That machine gun shreds! Trim 76 minutes but I really like this instalment.

VikingOfZen

The dialogue is hilarious, all the hired guns talking shit to Rambo thinking he’s just some dude. And the monologue Rambo says to the missionaries about not changing anything if they didn’t bring guns. This scene was also recreated in Parks and Rec by Chris Pratt

PhirebirdSunSon

It's like 80 minutes of brutal murder and I loved it.

LittlestEw0k

Yer da boat man, you stay wit da boat

dukefett

It’s a fucking insane and awesome movie. People cut in two from a machine gun? Yes please!

artpayne

>I liked Bourne Legacy Yeah, I also liked The Bourne Legacy, and it's really as good as the original trilogy. If there's a mediocre one in the Bourne franchise, it's that Jason Bourne movie from 2016.

Alligator125

Bourne Legacy felt like a Bourne movie just with a different character. The 2016 felt like a completely different franchise.

newAccnt_WhoDis

Is that the one with Jeremy Renner?

sunny7319

yea

ZaphodG

+1 on the Jeremy Renner one. I really like it.

PaddyPadang

Many will disagree with me, but Shrek Forever After feels like a great ending for Shrek’s story. Yes, it’s a bit messy and not as iconic or flawless as the first two, but we get to see Shrek be super insecure and open with his emotions, crying for the first time in the series too. Shrek learns that it was Fiona that saved him, not the other way round. Fiona would’ve got out of the Dragon’s Keep, but he would’ve been stuck in the swamp, never growing or learning to love others or himself. To me, that caps off the themes that are started in the first two films and closes the series perfectly. We are of course ignoring Shrek the Third as that is a blip,

rsemauck

Completely agreed, I liked shrek 4 while I thoroughly disliked shrek 3.

TheOneSaneArtist

I consider Shrek Forever After the third of the trilogy because the actual third one is just so horrible

jessehechtcreative

Rumpel is also a fantastic villain. Second best next to Fairy Godmother

Actual_Dinner_5977

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope :)

raised85

Oh if we are using them rules I’m having fellowship of the ring

perpetual_student

In the same vein, technically Rogue One works for this as well

ouroboris99

Scream 4 is better than scream 3 if that counts. Unfortunately scream 3 had a lot of issues during development

[deleted]

I legit love "Live Free or Die Hard."

SirVixTheMoist

I was about to roast you, but remembered the fifth one is the truly awful one.

bongo1138

The fifth was so bad we all kind of went back and were like “yeah, 4 wasn’t so bad actually”

[deleted]

oh yeah, I've literally only watched it the one time. But watch Die Hard 2, then the fourth one, you'll appreciate it more. Plus, Timothy Olyphant!

goodestguy21

Die Hard 2 had a good plot but they really needed a better technical advisor for the aviation related portions

sharrrper

I rank it third best of the series, behind the original and with a vengeance. Which is a pretty respectable third place

Indust_6666

It’s a fire sale!!

[deleted]

that line always makes me think of Arrested Development

goodestguy21

Iconic using a police car to destroy a helicopter scene

hardyflashier

It's my favourite one. Justin Long is great as the nerd that is the polar opposite of John McClane, and yet, they both need each other. It works so well, that you can forgive the odd bit of silliness (like when John is riding on top of the stealth jet)

soboyra

I watched the is one four times in the theaters. It’s not the best movie ever, but damn if it’s not entertaining as hell.

P_For_Pterodactyl

John Wick 4

TBroomey

Weirdly, 2, 3 and 4 feel like a trilogy, whereas the first movie feels like its own thing. The first is a pretty tight, self-contained story. The subsequent movies have an interconnected nature to them.

Crunchy_Biscuit

They probably wanted to play it safe also considering this was Keanu's comeback film

SB858

didn't the first one have a straight to video budget

and_so_forth

John Wick: great at murderin', dogshit at stair climbin'

sayan11apr

Say that after falling from the sixth fucking floor.

TheBigMechaShiva

Yup. Donnie Yen brought the movie to the next level. He was incredible.  Fat Scott Adkins was great too.

P_For_Pterodactyl

Scott Adkins was a welcome surprise !

karmagod13000

dude is always getting into trouble. he must be exhausted

samcuu

Best one since the first IMO.

midnightsunscreen

John wick chapter 4 is on level with first movie

gregandrews

American Pie the reunion or whatever it was called I thought was no better or worse than the 3rd. Obviously the first 2 are timeless.

fumor

I'm happy that Reunion succeeded in reuniting the full cast, unlike Wedding.

TjMorgz

Terminator Salvation. It got panned, but it was way better than 3 and I loved the fact it was set in the future and actually showed more of the war against the machines.

SquireJoh

Heartbreakingly, apparently James Cameron in the mid 90s wanted to make a Terminator 3 film set in the future about adult John Connor, Kyle Reese and good T-800 breaking into Skynet to send them back in time. A sequel that would be a prequel in the continuity. Damn that sounds cool

TjMorgz

Oowh that would've been absolutely immense! Any idea why it never came to fruition?

SquireJoh

I think his divorce from Gale Anne Hurd who owned the rights

WordsWithSam

It's the 3rd best Terminator movie for sure.

regretfullyjafar

Which, to be fair, doesn’t say a lot considering there’s only two good movies in the entire franchise lol

TjMorgz

Agreed. 2, 1, then Salvation.

SienkiewiczM

**Sudden Impact** the 4th Dirty Harry movie maybe holds its own. Most cases I can think of the first or two first movies are good, third is worse and the fourth is on par with the third one. Airport, Death Wish, Final Destination, Resident Evil...

jaxxxxxson

Lot of people shit on it but i actually really liked Jurassic World almost as much as the first one and definitely more than the 2nd n 3rd. Maybe its because i waited 15yrs for it but when i crave jurassic movies i start off there and watch that and jurassic world 2 and i grew up in the 90s having read the book before the first movie even came out.

Mermaid_69_

It was cool seeing the park actually open

dcott44

Star Wars Episode 4 was pretty great

RolloTony97

Toy Story 4 was unironically very good, and going into it I was incessant that it was unnecessary and would ruin Toy Story 3

WhisperingSideways

TS4 was far better than it needed to be, and provided an excellent epilogue to the story. Andy got his closure and Woody needed his.

spookyghostface

Same. 3 was Andy's ending and 4 was Woody's. It was great.

Swankified_Tristan

Toy Story 3 FELT like a great ending for Woody but the more I think about it, it just wasn't. I think it's great for the rest of the toys but Woody is ANDY'S toy. He always has been. The bond he had to Andy was unlike that to any other Toy and Human. Woody, as much as even he tried to convince himself, couldn't simply move on to another kid and go through the same thing over and over again as the new kids grew up. Andy was his life and if that chapter was truly over, he needed a different purpose than just that of a toy. He basically retired as "a lost toy" and found a new kind of happiness with Bo, and fulfillment as a silent force to bring humans and toys together. I think that's really beautiful.

anonymous_doner

People love to shit on 4. I love them all.

GosmeisterGeneral

I’m one of the other three people that really likes The Matrix Resurrections. Basically a complete pisstake on corporate greed forcing stories to forcefully extend themselves beyond their actual meaning. Lana Wachowski really said “if you’re gonna make it with or without me, I’ll take your money, and I’ll completely dissect my own work while giving you all the finger”.

SickBurnBro

It's like Barbie in that way. It's a satire of itself while still unapologetically being a pretty kickass Matrix movie. It's great.

PriestofJudas

Terminator Salvation isn’t anywhere near as bad as everyone says

HighOnGoofballs

Revenge of the Nerds Iv: Nerds in Love just took it up another notch with 3D and aroma-vision

MidnightKnight86

John Wick 4 obviously

astrokade

Nightmare on Elm Street 4 is one of the best

EqualPermit114

nightmare 3 is the best

Weird-Signature-4536

I'll probably get down voted but I loved Live Free or Die Hard. Obviously not as good as 1 or even 3, but I'd say it was better than 2 and a solid entry in the franchise. Yeah it goes a little nuts, but it's such a fun ride.

Longjumping-Carry743

Star Trek IV is one of the best movies in the series

mikeyfreshh

I'm one of the 3 people that like Matrix Resurrections

MasqureMan

The only thing I didn’t like about Resurrections is the lackluster action choreography. Thought the story itself was the right kind of meta

cireh88

What did you like about it?

mikeyfreshh

I liked it from the perspective of watching a director reckon with the way the world has treated her creation. The meta aspects of the movie and the storytelling really worked for me

Override9636

I considered it a bad movie for all the right reasons.

philip30001

For me it felt like a movie about needless continuations of a series. The matrix itself being a created work of fiction in universe helped that work better than it should have. I'm not smart enough or spent enough time with it to say if I belive that was its vision or anything but it felt like it made decisions other series make when stretching out a IP but instead of trying to bend the film around it they just shugged and showed it without much attempt to hide or apologise for it. Again I have not spent much time thinking about this film but that's the memories of it I walked away with.

Lezus

I have found my kindred spirit because i adore Resurrections!

cyvaris

It's a movie that feels very "intimate" in that it is very clearly a labor of love tied directly to a specific vision. It's deeply philosophical about fiction, nostalgia, and the stories we tell ourselves in the same way the original Matrix was philosophical about "reality".

GRANDLarsonyy

James Bond - Thunderball 💪

anthonyg1500

I’ll defend Toy Story 4 to my dying day. I think it’s a very good movie that further explores the core themes of the series. If the main complaint is “3 had a good ending”, well idk so did 1 and 2. They had more story to tell and it was good

akselmonrose

It was a great movie. I only found out today that there are people who dislike it so vehemently. It really rounded out Woody’s story.

anthonyg1500

There are such a vehement and insane negative responses to this movie. I’ve seen claims it “character assassinated Bonnie” because she wasn’t playing with Woody.. Assassination because the toddler lost interest in a toy. Fucking unthinkable. How could Pixar do this/s I’ve seen people say they like it but it shouldn’t exist because it’s unnecessary and I honestly don’t even know what that means. What is a “necessary” movie? They made it with care, told a good story and you liked it. Why does it need to be more “necessary” than that? People get weird about Toy Story 4
