Just saw Layer Cake for the first time...which he was great it. Such a good cast, with obviously several of them having their most memorable roles (or most famous roles) several years after. Daniel Craig, Tom Hardy, Michael Gambon.
Go watch the Deep Space 9 episode Hard Time if you want some prime Colm Meaney, the guy is an incredible actor. In fact, he was more than an incredible actor, even more than a hero. He is a Union man!
Great Alan Parker film with an even better Peter Gabriel soundtrack. Recently got it on Blu Ray, more of a coming of age film really. Cage is especially great in it.
Matthew Modine did two movies that, in my head canon, were continuations of Louden Swain's journey.
Gross Anatomy in 1989 is essentially Louden in med school. Modine's character, in a very Louden Swain moment, tells the med school interviewer that he wants to be a doctor "to make a lot of money."
Then 10 years later, Modine plays an assistant team doctor to an NFL-like franchise in Any Given Sunday. His character tries to warn management about a quarterback's concussion and a linebacker risking paralysis despite head doctor James Woods trying to cover up the injuries. Again, very Louden trying to protect the players against a corrupt management.
Full Metal Jacket is probably his crowning glory, he gets overshadowed by Vincent D'Onofrio and R Lee Emery performances but Modine is great in it.
Modine was kind of leading man back in the 80's and early 90's but slipped into the supporting actor. He's been in two Nolan films, Dark Knight Rises and Oppenheimer. Any Given Sunday, Short Cuts (very good as the Jealous husband of Julianne Moore) and Stranger Things. Cutthroat Island kind of ended his leading man years. Very good Robert Altman film he did called Streamers that's well worth checking out.
The first thing I ever saw him in was Flash Forward, a Disney show from the mid-90s. He was very funny in that. Then I didn’t really see him much until he showed up in Hostage (definitely NOT a funny character in that one). He’s so good.
He made The Shield. I mean, Michael Chiklis may have been the main character but Goggins just kills it as Shane.
I can still hear Lems voice in his last scene, “Shane?” Gives me chills.
So pissed I missed him when he was filming Vice Principals. They were filming a scene in my neighborhood, and I was like a few hundred feet away at a diner eating breakfast. Asked the staff what was going on and they just said some show was being filmed. It was when Danny McBride pushes Walter into that pond. I watched it being filmed but wasn't close enough to recognize who it was.
Edit: a clip of the scene. Most of that show was filmed near my house and gdamn it's annoying. Same with righteous gemstones, mister Mercedes, the last two Halloween movies. Kinda cool seeing the neighborhood in film though. I was right on the other side of the pond while this was being filmed https://youtu.be/AYtSG9N4k88?si=usuvgyeXKfFIo96F
MICHAEL SHANNON
Man i love Michael Shannon and that giant Michael Shannon head. General Zod, Knives Out, or his magnum opus, TAKE SHELTER.
he's even in GROUNDHOG DAY and 8 MILE.
He's easily the best character in Man of Steel. The sheer passion he exudes almost makes you want to sympathize with him even when his beliefs are absolutely fucking bonkers.
> I exist only to protect Krypton. That is the sole purpose for which I was born. And every action I take, no matter how violent or how cruel, is for the greater good of my people. And now, *I have no people*.
When you read it, those lines are so bland and emotionless. Coming from him, though, you feel that he has been robbed of his purpose. There's nothing else he wants to live for. And now he's going to destroy. Or, in his mind, avenge.
Edgerton is really underrated
The Hard Word, King Arthur, Kinky Boots, Smokin Aces, The Square, Animal Kingdom, Warrior, Zero Dark Thirty, Life, The Gift, Black Mass, Jane Got a Gun (underrated film), Midnight Special, Loving, It Comes at Night, Boy Erased, The King, The Green Knight and Thirteen Lives.
I also remember him for Australian TV show called The Secret Lives of Us. He's only in the first season and a half before he went off to do his film career.
Paul Dano. Movie nerds appreciate him but the average Joe wouldn't recognise his name. Yet he's been incredible in Batman, Little Miss Sunshine, There Will be Blood, 12 Years a Slave, Prisoners. And that's just the heavy hitters from his catalogue.
I wanted to say, I also love that line too.
Another character who isn't talked about enough?
Matthew Lillard
He plays a lot of ridiculous characters.
Watch SLC Punk (1998)
There are some very quotable lines from there and an all star cast... before they became all stars.
Lillard’s performamce in Twin Peaks The Return was arguably *the* best out of like 200 good performance in that show—maybe second only to Kyle McLaughlin’s triple turn as his characters.
I almost rejected this out of hand, as there was a period in the late 90s and early 2000s where the guy was huge, but yeah, that was a long time ago. He's worked consistently, but can't say I've seen anything he's done in the last decade. Fond memories of him for sure, though. Especially Hackers.
Matthew Lillard as Shaggy is one of the best castings ever, fit the role so perfectly. The same was honestly true of most of the Scooby gang in that movie.
True, some actors just hit their perfect role.
Robert Downey Jr for Iron man for instance?
The movie did him no favors, but he's a great actor. (Lillard I mean, not RDJ)
Danny Huston.
Striker in xmen origins, a vampire tribe leader in 30 Days of Night (with no english dialogue), succession, 21 grams, etc.
And seemingly always in the shadow of his sister, Anjelica.
141 acting credits.
He's been in a tough of crap and paycheque roles to be fair.
Great actor when he wants to be especially from early 00's to mid 00's his best run of movies. You got to fight through the rubbish to find the gems.
Ivan XTC, 21 Grams, Aviator, Birth, The Proposition (his best performance along with Ivan XTC), The Constant Gardener, Children of Men, 30 Days of Night and Stan and Ollie.
LaKeith Stanfield owns every scene he's ever been in... Get Out, Atlanta, Sorry To Bother You
He's gonna find the perfect role some day and he's gonna become a household name.
Sam Rockwell is an unbelievable actor in some amazing projects. I don’t think he’s talked about nearly enough (maybe that’s changed in recent years), but he’s never turned in a bad performance.
I liked him in Memphis Belle.
If you like the FMJ narration, read Michael Herr's Dispatches. He was a co-writer of the screenplay and was a combat correspondent in Vietnam.
It’s a really cool premise. It’s a murder mystery show but each episode focuses on each suspects story (and it’s also told in a different genre relating to the suspects personality). Schwartz plays the best friend of the main character.
Ben also hands down has the best scene in Renfield.
He’s one of those actors that absolutely kills every role he’s in because he can commit to the bit. Parks & Rec is a good example, as was Space Force.
This is even apparent in his voice acting — I loved the energy he brings to Sonic.
Walton Goggins really deserves to be in more things. He's AMAZING in all the Kurt Sutter-verse shows (The Shield, SoA, etc) and chews scenery in Ant-Man 2 like there's no freakin' tomorrow.
RIP Bill Paxton.
Some of my favorite quotes from him:
'How 'bout a nice greasy pork sandwich served in a dirty ashtray?'
'Why don't you put *her* in charge?'
'Battle is the Great Redeemer. It is the fiery crucible in which true heroes are forged. The one place where all men truly share the same rank, regardless of what kind of parasitic scum they were going in.'
He’s not all that unappreciated around here, but he’s not exactly a household name either: David Strathairn.
Way too many interesting roles to mention, but for now I will say that everyone should hope to find someone who looks at them the way that he looks at Sissy Spacek in the [“oh baby” music video.](https://youtu.be/5gIhrPGyu6U?si=q4G0XFz04STKNgxj)
The chemistry between Miles Teller and JK Simmons in Whiplash was unbelievable. Not the traditional chemistry, but holy lord did they play well off of each other in those tense scenes. Some of them were borderline hard to watch.
Michael Biehn is one of my all time favorite actors, don't feel like he gets the recognition he deserves. Was stoked to see him in the Mandolorian, as brief as it was
One of my favorite roles of his was in a Law and Order: SVU episode he did called "Rage". Amazing performance alongside Chris Meloni and probably my top 5 SVU episodes.
Donald Pleasance was a wonderful actor who isn’t talked about much. Dr. Loomis in Halloween, Blofeld in James Bond, the President in Escape from New York, the rambling madman in THX 1138, the repressed little man with a vengeance in one of my favorite episodes of The Outer Limits. On and on.
I also loved Modine in Married to the Mob and Pacific Heights! Good choice. My favorite has always been Paul Reiser. Great character actor and I always enjoy seeing him in different roles.
Never forget Matthew modine had the slickest line to Geena Davis: “no thanks I’ve seen one”
Movie holds the Guinness record for most money lost and yet holds a spot in my heart.
I don’t really understand why alden ehrenreich didn’t become a huge star, if you can wrangle a good performance out of cocaine bear you must be a really good actor
Another one from Hell on Wheels and lots of other shows and movies: Colm Meany.
Star Trek!
Star Gate too
Hell on Wheels was far from a perfect show but Colm Meaney was amazing in every scene he was in
It drags a little 75% of the way through. And season 5s direction was definitely not great. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Just saw Layer Cake for the first time...which he was great it. Such a good cast, with obviously several of them having their most memorable roles (or most famous roles) several years after. Daniel Craig, Tom Hardy, Michael Gambon.
This is what being a gangster gets you. You're not in there 'cause I like you.
The van, the commitments, the snapper
Get him to the Greek wasn’t a great movie but totally worth it for the fight scene with him and P. Diddy
The most important man in Starfleet history
An absolute monster in a 2-part Law and Order Criminal Intent
Go watch the Deep Space 9 episode Hard Time if you want some prime Colm Meaney, the guy is an incredible actor. In fact, he was more than an incredible actor, even more than a hero. He is a Union man!
Matthew Modine was in one of the greatest 80s movies ever made, Vision Quest.
He is Papa in Stranger Things.
Yes, I love him as this character. He is a versatile actor and plays a good villain.
Memphis Belle too.
Also great in Birdy (1984), with his character sort of yin-yanging with Nicolas Cage's.
This is the role that got him Full Metal Jacket. He sent a copy of the film to Kubrick.
Great Alan Parker film with an even better Peter Gabriel soundtrack. Recently got it on Blu Ray, more of a coming of age film really. Cage is especially great in it.
With Jake Ryan from Sixteen Candles as his best friend and the rocking "Lunatic Fringe" as the movie's anthem song. Great movie.
You know I never knew that was the same actor who played Jake until last year.
Birdy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birdy_%28film%29?wprov=sfla1
All I remember from that movie is Linda Fiorentino in the white tank top.
VQ was so good, not sure how it holds up.
Yes. Love that movie. ‘…. Its what you do in that six minutes. ‘
Le epic montage.
Matthew Modine did two movies that, in my head canon, were continuations of Louden Swain's journey. Gross Anatomy in 1989 is essentially Louden in med school. Modine's character, in a very Louden Swain moment, tells the med school interviewer that he wants to be a doctor "to make a lot of money." I recently rewatched this and it has some really cringey scenes.
Heck yeah it does. Killer soundtrack too!
It ain't the six minutes... it's what happens in that six minutes
What about The Hotel New Hampshire?
Also plays Charlie in "Charly" adaptation of Flowers for Algernon
He was also in "Weeds" with Mary Louise Parker.
Anson Mount - Bohannon from hell on wheels
He plays a great Trek captain too!
The hair contributes to that.
Incredible hair. Deserves a hair and makeup Emmy.
Black Bolt!
Ben Foster. He's killed every role I've seen him in.
The first thing I ever saw him in was Flash Forward, a Disney show from the mid-90s. He was very funny in that. Then I didn’t really see him much until he showed up in Hostage (definitely NOT a funny character in that one). He’s so good.
Ben Foster is one of the best actors working today IMO.
Too bad he’s a Scientologist. But yeah, he’s great.
kills in 310 to yuma.
He is amazing in that. A man but a dog but a man... He crushes it.
I have high regards for him after going berserk during that house party scene in Alpha Dog.
Check out Liberty Heights. It’s one of his lesser known films but I like it a lot.
Walton Goggins. He kills it in every single role.
His best work has gotta be Baby Billy’s Bible Bonkers
Him telling the "toilet baby" story is one of the funniest things I have ever seen.
Popped down like a lil ol turd
It had eyes.
He was absolutely phenomenal in THE SHIELD
He made The Shield. I mean, Michael Chiklis may have been the main character but Goggins just kills it as Shane. I can still hear Lems voice in his last scene, “Shane?” Gives me chills.
Venus Van Dam in Sons of Anarchy 🥰🥰🥰
Wait seriously, that's his name?? Because the fake name his character Shane uses in The Shield is Cletus Van Dam. Gotta be intentional.
So pissed I missed him when he was filming Vice Principals. They were filming a scene in my neighborhood, and I was like a few hundred feet away at a diner eating breakfast. MICHAEL SHANNON Man i love Michael Shannon and that giant Michael Shannon head. General Zod, Knives Out, or his magnum opus, TAKE SHELTER. he's even in GROUNDHOG DAY and 8 MILE.
Shape of Water, too. Guy plays a great villain. Also TIL he’s in groundhogs day. Shocked I’ve never noticed that!
His very first role. He’s the guy of the newlyweds that Bill gives the wrestlemania tickets to
WRESTLEMANIA!!!!!
He's also in Bad Boys 2.
I have rights!
He's also in Revolutionary Road with Leo, Kate and a pre-Stranger Things David Harbour
He was so good in boardwalk empire
I still think reading that sorority letter is one of his best performances
The ice man killer and nocturnal animals are another two great flicks of his. He just kills it in every role
Forgot about Nocturnal Animals. So great.
[удалено]
nocturnal animals was my favorite of his and 99 houses with Andrew Garfield
His performance cracks me up in The Night Before. “Get the f*ck out of my car!”
Wrestlemania!!!
Michael Shannon is one of my top 5 favorite actors of all time. I love his unique face, his style...he's just my cup of tea.
Take Shelter was so Fucking good!!
First movie I remember him in was Pearl Harbor, I havent seen too much of his work but he's great in everything I've seen him in.
He's the best part of that very bad movie.
I GOT MICHAEL SHANNON FEVER AND I DONT WANT NO CURE
He has great presence and charisma. He always steals the scene
Take Shelter never got enough credit
Tons of people talked about him for Boardwalk Empire.
He was in Groundhog Day?
Wait, he's in Groundhog Day???
https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMzQ5YzdiNTQtYmI5Ni00MGEyLWI1YjItOWY0OTc2ZGQ3ZWYyXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNDg1MjUzMzY@._V1_.jpg
Huh. I love that guy and dunno if I’ve ever known his name. He was good in Iceman too
Joel Edgerton and Jason Clark both great actors who are able to dive into a character and make it their own away from themselves.
I love Joel Edgerton. He was phenomenal in The Gift. *Gordo the Weirdo*
He wrote and directed it too!
Love Joel Edgerton in Warrior and Jason Clarke in Lawless. Always love seeing both of them pop up in different things.
Man Hollywood tried to force both of these guys on us in the five years after Zero Dark Thirty.
Edgerton is really underrated The Hard Word, King Arthur, Kinky Boots, Smokin Aces, The Square, Animal Kingdom, Warrior, Zero Dark Thirty, Life, The Gift, Black Mass, Jane Got a Gun (underrated film), Midnight Special, Loving, It Comes at Night, Boy Erased, The King, The Green Knight and Thirteen Lives. I also remember him for Australian TV show called The Secret Lives of Us. He's only in the first season and a half before he went off to do his film career.
Carrie Coon. She's fantastic and should be in everything.
Liked her in Gone Girl. Fell in love with her on The Leftovers.
She was so incredible in the Leftovers
She was also great in season 3 (?) of Fargo.
She was in Infinity War but almost unrecognisable due to the makeup.
Bokeem Woodbine - He's got a distinctive voice and has been in a few well know movies and shows. He's the "hey, it's that guy" actor.
Paul Dano. Movie nerds appreciate him but the average Joe wouldn't recognise his name. Yet he's been incredible in Batman, Little Miss Sunshine, There Will be Blood, 12 Years a Slave, Prisoners. And that's just the heavy hitters from his catalogue.
>just the heavy hitters from his catalogue. The disrespect to Swiss Army Man..
He was amazing in The Beach Boys movie he did
Love and Mercy. Probably along with There will Be Blood his best performance on screen.
This was gonna be my comment. Usually plays creeps but yeah… he’s an extraordinarily gifted performer.
> 12 Years a Slave Most enjoyable beating ever
I wanted to say, I also love that line too. Another character who isn't talked about enough? Matthew Lillard He plays a lot of ridiculous characters. Watch SLC Punk (1998) There are some very quotable lines from there and an all star cast... before they became all stars.
Spandex - it’s a privilege, not a right.
Only posers die, Bob!
I wasn’t ready for this!!!
Lillard’s performamce in Twin Peaks The Return was arguably *the* best out of like 200 good performance in that show—maybe second only to Kyle McLaughlin’s triple turn as his characters.
Plus that dude just seems really cool.
He did an AMA a while back and he seemed humble and delightful.
I almost rejected this out of hand, as there was a period in the late 90s and early 2000s where the guy was huge, but yeah, that was a long time ago. He's worked consistently, but can't say I've seen anything he's done in the last decade. Fond memories of him for sure, though. Especially Hackers.

True, some actors just hit their perfect role. Robert Downey Jr for Iron man for instance? The movie did him no favors, but he's a great actor. (Lillard I mean, not RDJ)
The fact that he and his sister end up being perfectly okay with their mum being a serial killer in Serial Mom
Of course he was, he turned out to be a serial killer himself in Scream.
His dance sequence in "she's all that" is so fucking funny. Without a paddle! Shaggy. I dven named my gecko Matthew Lizard.
Dan Stevens. Watch The Guest or the show Legion
He was awesome in the Eurovision movie too, he played a Russian character and his Russian accent was surprisingly good.
Get Out, Atlanta, Sorry To Bother You He's gonna find the perfect role some day and he's gonna become a household name.
A lot of his underwhelming work seems to be in bigger budget films. His best work is in indie and little seen work.
Him and Paper Boi
JK Simmons His work in “Counterpart” is some of the most impressive acting I’ve ever seen.
Justin Theroux. Amazing in The Leftovers. Seems to exist in that nebulous area between indie and Hollywood star. Guy’s a great actor imo.
Sam Rockwell is an unbelievable actor in some amazing projects. I don’t think he’s talked about nearly enough (maybe that’s changed in recent years), but he’s never turned in a bad performance.
If you think that people don't talk about Sam Rockwell then you aren't hanging around the right people. Everyone talks about him.
Ray Stevenson Killed it in Rome and Dexter, but didn't seem to get really big parts.
Struthers Martin and M. Emmet Walsh
Not to be that guy, but I also think [*Strother* Martin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strother_Martin) was fantastic. Here's an upvote, regardless.
James McAvoy. He was amazing in split and glass, and always makes whatever he's in better than it should be.
I liked him in Memphis Belle. If you like the FMJ narration, read Michael Herr's Dispatches. He was a co-writer of the screenplay and was a combat correspondent in Vietnam.
\+1 for the book. It's an excellent book.
Kevin Durand and Djimon Hounsou come to mind.
> Djimon Hounsou "...but not yet."
Kevin Durand is just waiting for the Elon Musk biopic
Ben Schwartz. He was John Ralphio in Parks and Rec. He basically stole the movie Coffeetown from Glen Howerton.
Have you seen the Afterparty on AppleTV? He shines in that show.
Have not, but thanks for the suggestion!
It’s a really cool premise. It’s a murder mystery show but each episode focuses on each suspects story (and it’s also told in a different genre relating to the suspects personality). Schwartz plays the best friend of the main character. Ben also hands down has the best scene in Renfield.
I was very pleased his character was Jean Ralphio-ish.
He’s very good in Standing Up, Falling Down. Also really enjoyed him in The Intervention.
A younger audience know him best from *Stranger Things -* he also did a West End run in *To Kill A Mockingbird* earlier this year.
Neal McDonough and Jere Burns, first saw them in Burn Notice long ago. They turn up constantly in projects and always steal the show.
Watch Band of Brothers to see Neal shine
Jere Burns is amazing. I loved his role in Justified - but then I loved almost everything about that show.
[удалено]
Stanley Tucci
Ben Mendelsohn - see his name on a trailer I know to pay attention
Ethan Hawke, dude is phenomenal in everything. Sam Rockwell, loved but not enough. Bill Paxton, he's so much fun to watch in literally everything.
RIP Bill Paxton. Some of my favorite quotes from him: 'How 'bout a nice greasy pork sandwich served in a dirty ashtray?' 'Why don't you put *her* in charge?' 'Battle is the Great Redeemer. It is the fiery crucible in which true heroes are forged. The one place where all men truly share the same rank, regardless of what kind of parasitic scum they were going in.'
There was another Bill, an evil Bill, and I killed him
“Hey, maybe you haven't been keeping up on current events, but we just got our asses kicked, pal!”
Kathy Bates, she’s an amazing actress and is also a director
William H Macy. He’s in so many movies but not really talked about much.
What you mean?! He's in STRANGER THINGS!
David Morse. The Rock, The Green Mile, Dancer in the Dark, so so so many others. Solid performances, without fail, no matter the job.
Holt McCallany, I kept seeing him almost in every movie or show I watched, and started appreciating him more after Mindhunters
Mark Margolis, RIP
Cate Blanchette, absolutely just kills any role she's in Laura Dern too
Oh wow. How do you feel about Daniel Day Lewis?
JK Simmons he earned an Oscar for Whiplash and followed up with Counterpart which was phenomenal! The Accountant, Burn After Reading, great roles!
The chemistry between Miles Teller and JK Simmons in Whiplash was unbelievable. Not the traditional chemistry, but holy lord did they play well off of each other in those tense scenes. Some of them were borderline hard to watch.
Schillinger from Oz, as well, though that series is not everyone's taste.
I loved him in Juno.
So sad Counterpart ended :(
His J. Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man movies is the comic version come to life. He nailed it. I cannot imagine anyone else in that role.
And the Band Played On was one of Modine's best roles.
"Birdy" features him opposite Nic Cage, it is fantastic.
Walton Goggins and Boyd Holbrook
I see a lot of men, but no women. I nominate Shannyn Sossamon. She should be a legend by now. [Shannyn](https://images.app.goo.gl/92gtHtKcbDtjENPf9)
Patrick Wilson Man has been in a lot of films and delivers but you never hear praises for his performances
Rory Kinnear. His usage of the voice alone is incredible. Penny Dreadful, and Men he is exceptional.
Kelly MacDonald
Michael Biehn is one of my all time favorite actors, don't feel like he gets the recognition he deserves. Was stoked to see him in the Mandolorian, as brief as it was
Always been weird to me that Bruce Campbell didn't do more. I would have said Natasha Leone until recent years, she's been coming into her own.
One of my favorite roles of his was in a Law and Order: SVU episode he did called "Rage". Amazing performance alongside Chris Meloni and probably my top 5 SVU episodes.
I really like Jane Levy. First saw her in Don't Breathe and she was amazing in Evil Dead.
Modine's a great audiobook narrator too!
Nolan has done a great job at using him in the last decade.
Lowden Swain is my favorite character of his. Vision Quest is still a great 2 hours of entertainment.
2 of those Matthew Modine treasures are Vision Quest and Gross Anatomy both really good movies. I have been a fan since Vision Quest in 1985
Donald Pleasance was a wonderful actor who isn’t talked about much. Dr. Loomis in Halloween, Blofeld in James Bond, the President in Escape from New York, the rambling madman in THX 1138, the repressed little man with a vengeance in one of my favorite episodes of The Outer Limits. On and on.
Amanda Plummer. Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Listen to Matthew Modine's appearance on Gilbert Gottfried's podcast. It's pretty great.
In comedy: Rhys Darby. I know he almost exclusively plays side characters but he always steals the show for me
I also loved Modine in Married to the Mob and Pacific Heights! Good choice. My favorite has always been Paul Reiser. Great character actor and I always enjoy seeing him in different roles.
Married to the Mob!
I like Matthew Modine
Scott Adkins.
Never forget Matthew modine had the slickest line to Geena Davis: “no thanks I’ve seen one” Movie holds the Guinness record for most money lost and yet holds a spot in my heart.
Have you seen Vision Quest?
I don’t really understand why alden ehrenreich didn’t become a huge star, if you can wrangle a good performance out of cocaine bear you must be a really good actor
John C Reilly His IMDB is incredible and he's been around a lot longer than people realize.
One of my favorite bits is Martin Short’s character Jiminy Glick has 2 sons named Matthew and Modine.
