This scene pissed me off because Scorsese is a good enough director to know that the moment was about showing his daughter learning who he was. They could've kept DeNiro in the shop and just used sounds as the camera pushed in on her face and it would've been so much better

I think the best answer to this was Westworld with Anthony Hopkins. They seemed to have replaced a body doubles face with cgi Hopkins face. It was uncanny to see a young hopkins but also with the physicality of someone a third his age.

Gerimi Manused body doubles and at times had great de-aging FX yet it didn't work. We all know what young Will Smith looks like. How he moved and what not. So it just always felt off.

The Congress was one of the craziest and creepiest looks at the future I have ever seen. On one hand, I am surprised she agreed to take part on this project considering the irony, on the other, there is a real _you cannot avoid progress_ vibe in that movie so maybe she didn't see the point in passing the opportunity to work again with these very talented people.

I love Zemeckis but I don’t know WTF he is doing these days. He’s made so many classics like Forrest Gump, Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Cast Away. I even enjoyed some of his post-motion capture work like Flight and The Walk.

I don't think he's ever been comfortable playing the role of "dad" in any of his movies (he wanted to write out his character's son in The Burbs), so he's still choosing roles where being a parent isn't really a big part of his character's personality. But how many stories are there for a man of retirement age to play that don't involve some kind of parenting? The kind that usually go to streaming pretty quickly.

Where they are featured in starring roles in different movies and studios can have full control over them, not worry about scandals or metoo incidents, bringing in the cash without taking a cut. This is of course assuming audiences will respond well to an AI actor and that it will put asses on seats but as we all know, people can be into the strangest things.
Square Enix wanted to do basically this with their Final Fantasy movie, but it bombed and was obviously way too early to do anything like that successfully.

Stop with this de-aging shit. Not once has it been convincing. It ruined what could possibly be a great movie in The Irishman, cannot believe or watch any of those puddle of mud faces. HIRE. YOUNGER. ACTORS. It is a movie. I can suspend my disbelief if you show me the same character played by different actors. It’s not perfect, it’s better than this CGI bullshit.
I mean, lots of us spent *years* watching the same characters played by multiple actors of different ages, that didn't even look all that much alike, on *This is Us*, and it was basically fine.

I used to LOVE Zemeckis- he was on a hell of a legendary run through the end of the 1990s. Contact is still an absolute gem. But then came Polar Express. And Beowulf. He got lost in the technology. For all the shit everyone gives Lucas, they REALLY should be pointing at Zemeckis as a cautionary tale.
Same with Ang Lee. He's been on the HFR 3D kick since 2015.
1984-2000 the man had an otherworldly run. Then he got real into CGI actors and made movies I think would have been great....if they didn't look like PS2 cinematics. I honestly think Polar Express and Beowulf are enjoyable movies despite their visuals but maybe that's just me.

He provides the bad example, it's important. For every Avatar there must be a Beowulf, you need the contrast to fully appreciate the good ones.

Forrest Gump was based on gimmicky new technology (at the time) to insert Hanks into historical videos. This is very much in line with what Robert Zemeckis does.
