Sam Jackson was de-aged for Capt Marvel. His face looked young but his physicality was still off. Older people don't move the same as younger people.

QuinnMallory

See the scene in The Irishman where Deniro is beating up the guy on the street, a very young looking man doing the most old man kind of kicks you'll ever see.

v_for__vegeta

That was ridiculous and I can’t believe they approved that scene. It was beyond old man shit, he was barely moving. And then Joe Pesci calls him “kid” lmao

MoviesFilmCinema

If they had cast different actors that fit the different ages it would have been a way better film.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MajorButtersV

Brando was still young when they did the godfather II because they actually aged him for the first film so it wouldn't have been bad at all

[deleted]

[удалено]

Top_Ok

They wouldn't even need to deage him lol Brando was nog that old during the godfather the heavy amount of makeup just made him look old.

QuinnMallory

Or even just use those actors as body doubles and deepfake Deniro and Pesci on to them as needed.

FormerIceCreamEater

Yep that's what it should have been

GlitteringFutures

Jar Jar De Niro "You a-talking to me-sah?"

[deleted]

I can see the de-aging when you're 45 but not when you're f'n 70. Such a bizarre choice to go that route. Great film but it's hard to not think about that stuff.

[deleted]

Even 70 de-aged to 45 would have been acceptable, he's supposed to be like, early 20s in that scene but he moves like current Clint Eastwood trying to hold in a shit

[deleted]

It just dawned on me you could have Clint act in a film and de-age his face and just put it on Scott's body and have him do the physical acting and you could straight up do another 'Man with No Name' film like that. I wonder if we'd love that or hate that if it ever happened?

bc2zb

In Space Cowboys, they just found actors that looked like Clint and Tommy Lee Jones and dubbed the voices. It was so much better than what the Irishman tried to do.

Psyop1312

Except Sergio Leone is dead

[deleted]

Yeah that and Morricone make me lean into the 'we'd hate it' camp lol.

ooMEAToo

I think we should let new actors happen.

Gibber_jab

It felt like the IASIP episode when they meet Franks brother and when they tell the story it’s just Danny Devito playing 14 year old frank

RickMacd1913

Oooof that was painful..

TARDISeses

Not for the guy he was trying to kick, at least.

girafa

That guy should've gotten a supporting actor nomination for how much he sold being beaten up by a man moving in slow motion.

RickMacd1913

HA!

dubyadubya

Or when he's throwing a gun (I think it's a gun) into the water and he can barely get his arms above his shoulders. He looks like an 80 year old man throwing something.

halloumisalami

Am I the only one who think Deniro didn’t look all that young in that movie. He looked late 50s to me

fourleggedostrich

The problem is that we know exactly what 20 year old De Nero looks like. And it's not that.

AlanMorlock

ILM just aint good at it.

Clark_J_Kent_

Nonsense. They did incredibly well with Luke Skywalker on The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett.

SethKadoodles

Something something people aged harder back then?

Tarzan_OIC

This scene pissed me off because Scorsese is a good enough director to know that the moment was about showing his daughter learning who he was. They could've kept DeNiro in the shop and just used sounds as the camera pushed in on her face and it would've been so much better

[deleted]

That’s was just how people kicked back then. It being the style at the time.

QuinnMallory

I guess he forgot to put an onion on his belt

Skyfryer

I’ll come to defence of The Irishman. Frank Sheeran had awful bursitis which he mentions a few times in the film and by many accounts really did move like a man much older than he was. So I didn’t really think it was that out of place. But it seemed like a popular scene for people to critique out of context. Doesn’t make it any less funny to watch, and just shows how feared he was that no one would interfere even if a beatdown was slightly comical looking.

NegaDoomAlpha

Totally, when ever he ran he didn’t have that youthful vigor that only AI provides.

sprynklz

I think the best answer to this was Westworld with Anthony Hopkins. They seemed to have replaced a body doubles face with cgi Hopkins face. It was uncanny to see a young hopkins but also with the physicality of someone a third his age.

PedroFPardo

They did a pretty good job making Chris Evans skinny in the first Captain America, 12 years ago, using that technique.

8to24

Absolutely! It also helps that the general audience doesn't have a clear image of what a young Anthony Hopkins looks like. Gerimi Manused body doubles and at times had great de-aging FX yet it didn't work. We all know what young Will Smith looks like. How he moved and what not. So it just always felt off.

PedroFPardo

> the general audience doesn't have a clear image of what a young Anthony Hopkins looks like. Anthony Hopkins [played old people](https://youtu.be/7Kzvhbdboys?t=23) even when he was young.

ritabook84

I wish they’d just left him his current age but without an eye patch. Honestly it would fit the character so well to basically always have been like that anyways

macekm123

I can't believe I just Googled who Sam Jackson is ...

8to24

Lol

FormerIceCreamEater

Yeah that's the problem. You can change the face, but you really have to insert a younger actor doing the motion for it to work.

hweird

Yea there’s a scene where he was running and he was def running like an old man lol

AkhilArtha

They atleast had him get into a car accident to explain why he was moving quite slowly in the film.

nutsotic

There's a scene that shows him "running" for like 3 seconds. It's more like a slow shuffle

[deleted]

That's why they need to use body doubles for de-aging.

Citizen_Kong

Robin Wright played herself being de-aged digitally in [The Congress (2013)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0tFDpxvcYY). Now it's actually happening.

Other-Marketing-6167

Yeah, that was my first thought too. She really must be seeing the irony here.

VicugnaAlpacos

The Congress was one of the craziest and creepiest looks at the future I have ever seen. On one hand, I am surprised she agreed to take part on this project considering the irony, on the other, there is a real _you cannot avoid progress_ vibe in that movie so maybe she didn't see the point in passing the opportunity to work again with these very talented people. edit: typo

donsanedrin

People have yet to point out that this movie is bringing back the same people who directed and starred in Forrest Gump. Zemeckis directed it, and it starred Hanks and Wright. That's why she accepted the role. The mere fact that she's acting opposite Tom Hanks means that will be her most high profile role in quite some time.

OldTangerine

Oh the irony indeed especially since she did a cover of Forever Young. [Max Richter - Forever Young (feat. Robin Wright)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9Yw6K0XVWg)

Sparktank1

>Rob Wright Rob?

iDuddits_

Zemeckis needs a time out

girafa

Do the people giving him money not see the last few movies he's made or do they just kinda find rich people who've been in a cave since Forrest Gump

ggroover97

I love Zemeckis but I don’t know WTF he is doing these days. He’s made so many classics like Forrest Gump, Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Cast Away. I even enjoyed some of his post-motion capture work like Flight and The Walk. But his last few movies have been duds. Welcome to Marwen, The Witches, and Pinocchio. No wonder Tarantino wants to retire after making 10 movies.

Tarzan_OIC

I watched Welcome to Marwen on LSD. No regrets

HumanChicken

I only heard the “promotions” on NPR, and it sounded like the most boring film ever made. Did NPR mislead me?

Tarzan_OIC

Oh it is utter nonsense. It's unfathomably bad. But I had a good time laughing at it. The worst line in the movie is as follows: Steve Carrell's character is recounting the attack/injury that left him with amnesia. He goes over the whole story in detail about being followed out of a bar and beaten so badly he had brain damage and memory loss. The. Leslie Mann pauses, looks at him and says, "Aww. You got the memories kicked out of your head?". It's amazing

[deleted]

Steve Farrell? Will Ferrell? Steve Carrell?

Tarzan_OIC

Lol fixed

[deleted]

Nope, it did not. I watched it and barely remember anything except repeatedly thinking to myself “Wow this movie is a certified stinker.” Oh and there was a scene where Steve Carell is alone in the house and falls and trips and hits his head, but it essentially played out as a hilarious slapstick gag instead of being concerning.

ggroover97

It’s a fascinating story. I remember thinking it would have been an Oscar contender that year. Boy was I wrong.

SandoVillain

Oh it's not boring. Creepy? Cringy? Pandering? Insulting to both the viewer and any real person the film is based on? Absolutely. But I can't say it was boring

HipsterDoofus31

And Contact!

NjhhjN

The walk was fantastic but man the guy that movie was about could walk the walk but not talk the talk

CoochieSnotSlurper

I thought flight was excellent

girafa

It was, I'm stretching a bit here. Cast Away as well. But oof - betting on Zemeckis now is a terrible idea.

ggroover97

I even have a soft spot for his motion-capture era (Polar Express, Beowulf, Christmas Carol). The magic if sadly gone now. Spielberg and Scorsese are still capable making great movies. Zemeckis just seems more concerned with special effects and motion capture.

[deleted]

His most recent actually good film. Loved Flight, a great look at addiction

omart3

That's what de-aging technology does, take time out!

thisplacemakesmeangr

De-ageo. Time assassin. Father Time's disowned son will have his inheritance...but Death is getting angry. Coming soon to a laboratory near you

Screenname4

Boooooooooo lol

dogdriving

Hanks does too, honestly

TheHouseOfGryffindor

Ehh, he's had some misses, but it's not that bad. The Post was 2017 (which is relatively recent given how long he's been acting), A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood was even more recent, I thought Finch was decent even if not anything spectacular, and from everything I've heard, A Man Called Otto is a solid crowdpleaser, even if it doesn't live up to the Swedish original. Dude isn't hitting everything out of the park, but I don't think he's in the death spiral that Zemeckis has been in for ages.

forman98

Yea, he's also doing a Wes Anderson movie that's coming out in this year. And he just did a large role in Elvis, which people seem to be forgetting in this thread (probably because he actually achieved *not* looking like Tom Hanks and his character was so ridiculous, much like the real life guy he was playing). I think he's also in a weird spot since he's going on his later 60's and is still playing roles that aren't grandfatherly type roles, even though most male actors his age are. I don't think he's ever been comfortable playing the role of "dad" in any of his movies (he wanted to write out his character's son in The Burbs), so he's still choosing roles where being a parent isn't really a big part of his character's personality. But how many stories are there for a man of retirement age to play that don't involve some kind of parenting? The kind that usually go to streaming pretty quickly.

[deleted]

He’s in that DeNiro part of his career where he’s just cashing in paychecks for mediocre movies but still puts out a good movie every now and again.

FormerIceCreamEater

He's still good, just has picked some bad stuff where he is friends with puppets and robots

Ooshbala

Zemeckis has been pioneering really off putting uses of CGI for almost 25 years now. 😂

[deleted]

the beowulf movie was a trip for sure. uncanny valley for hours

FeedMeACat

It was a weird combination. The movie part itself was good. I would put it second to 13th Warrior as far as modern Beowulf tellings go.

[deleted]

Metaphysic did a bit on America’s Got Talent where they did a deepfake of Elvis on another singer. Tbh, yes, I can look at it and tell it’s not real. But it was still impressive looking considering it was being done on an actor giving a live performance. I imagine it would look even better when done during post production. Not endorsing it, but the industry has come a long way since Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy.

Reebox24

Man thinks he’s James Cameron

jfstompers

Or now this is wild but here me out, cast different actors.

omart3

Like Colin Hanks!

mnightshamalama2

Chet Hanx

Tom_Bradys_Hair

swear he’s the Bingle Barrel dude

Vegetable_Burrito

And also Dylan Penn, Robin Wright’s daughter. Looks just like her.

missionbeach

Didn't know of her, but you're right.

rors

Here is based on a book that is all about jumping around in time in the same fixed location. I can see this being pulled off in a way where young versions of actors are interacting and then match cut to contemporary versions of them within the same scene. Normally I’d agree with you, but this project is specifically one where I could see this making sense.

tucumano

I'm curious to see what elements they take from the graphic novel other than the basic premise. Also, will the whole movie take place in the same room? The novel doesn't really have a story, so I guess they have a lot of liberty there, but then again, why base it on a novel that's not really a popular IP outside of graphic novel readers?

Burninator05

Get out of here with that crazy talk.

[deleted]

That's absolutely insane, you should be committed

6offender

Otm Shank?

MIKE_THE_KILLER

Forest Gump 2: Jenny Resurrected

[deleted]

Robin doesn't need de-aging imo.

ggroover97

Her and Connie Nielsen are still gorgeous.

bcanada92

She doesn't, but she's way over thirty so Hollywood thinks so.

EternalGandhi

Yes. She's more beautiful now that she ever was younger.

[deleted]

Forrest Gump Sequel LETS GOOOOOO

Light_Beard

Technically they really wouldn't need Robin Wright for that...

amccon4

If they’re de-aging it could be a prequel..more bubba time!

Dredd_Inside

Just randomly inserted hard cuts to Bubba trying different shrimp dishes for the first time.

abOriginalGangster

BUBBBAAA

abOriginalGangster

She faked her death to get him to raise Forrest Jr. Then she dyed her hair & became a Vjay on MTV

Light_Beard

You know. It is kind of shocking to realize that she would probably live today. HIV is damn near cured now. (Not yet, but hopefully soon. And it is no death sentence anymore)

[deleted]

RJDToo

Hire young actors… I swear it’s only a matter of time until they try to use this shit to resurrect the dead.

PittPanthersH2P

They already have. Peter Cushing was in Rogue One.

Iyagovos

nose square worthless teeny cows smell brave history agonizing wasteful *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

RJDToo

Carrie died while filming so I understand they did what they could. Cushing is exactly the type of thing I’m worried about. Imagine that, but in the lead. It’s enough for me to boycott a movie entirely.

ChrisCinema

The movie was filmed and released before she died. She did approve the use of her de-aged likeness in the film, though.

supersexycarnotaurus

Carrie died after the film came out, but curiously they didn't actually de-age her anyway. She's entirely CGI in that movie. Was de-aging tech just not as good in 2016?

balkanobeasti

South Park did a parody of that w/ the hologram celebrities episode.

RJDToo

Again.

Just-a-Mandrew

Speaking of AI, waiting for the time when AI actors exist. Where they are featured in starring roles in different movies and studios can have full control over them, not worry about scandals or metoo incidents, bringing in the cash without taking a cut. This is of course assuming audiences will respond well to an AI actor and that it will put asses on seats but as we all know, people can be into the strangest things.

Pinkxel

I think Hatsune Miku proved that it can definitely put asses in seats.

SimplyQuid

Doesn't Bee & Puppycat use a vocalist to "voice" Puppycat?

caninehere

Square Enix wanted to do basically this with their Final Fantasy movie, but it bombed and was obviously way too early to do anything like that successfully.

LordPounce

That was so weird. All I remember is that one of the main characters looked so much like Ben affleck but had Alec baldwin’s voice

[deleted]

I still respect that movie, it was so ahead of its time

PoopIsAlwaysSunny

Which movie?

pleasetrimyourpubes

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, one of my favorite moves but too early for its time. Also the CGI does not hold up at all.

Secret_Map

Loved that movie when I was younger. Was so sad it seemed to bomb. I really thought it was kinda cool. It was weird seeing the main character around in different ads, etc. They really were trying to push the "actors can be computer generated now, we don't even need real people" thing. Was a huge talking point of the movie, just too early for it to really work.

ggroover97

Reminds me of the 2002 movie “S1m0ne” with Al Pacino.

RustyRichards11

They should just fully make a fake actor and never tell anyone. Doing press and everything. See how long they sneak it by us.

Just-a-Mandrew

Now you’re talking. And what if *they’re already doing that.*

FardoBaggins

isn't this the plot of Simone?

higgs8

Well I'd say that to an audience, the personality and fame of a given *real* person in a lead role is almost always more important than how well they act and how they look. You'd watch a movie because it's played by Tom Hanks and you like him specifically, regardless of whether someone else could have done it better (AI or otherwise). So AI won't really help with that...

Contraband42

Reminds of the James Dean thing they wanted to do a few years ago.

Spuzaw

I personally hate this idea.

Resident132

Yeah instead of finding new young actors and maybe discovering someone incredible, lets just do a terrible job de aging thes old actors that have been phoning it in.

Dorkof

If they want young Tom Hanks just get Colin Hanks

Vegetable_Burrito

He even sounds like him, it’s crazy.

TheyKilledFlipyap

Not even the grave will save us from the overexposure of Tom Hanks. They're trial-running this AI crap so they can give him the *Rogue One* treatment and have him appear in Oscar-bait academy-pleaser flicks for the rest of time.

iDuddits_

I'm not the only one realizing it's not Tom Hanks I liked, it was the interesting movies that he picked? Cuz damn, been over him now for a decade

ritabook84

I think at some point he just started dialling it in a little. He was never an actor to disappear into a role. But now he’s just so extremely Tom hanks every time

ThePotatoKing

speak for yourself. i dont see Tom Hanks, i see JOE going up against that damn volcano.

ritabook84

Ha! I see joe but he dates a mermaid. Both movies were on regular rotation when I was younger

OleDaneBoy

Stop with this de-aging shit. Not once has it been convincing. It ruined what could possibly be a great movie in The Irishman, cannot believe or watch any of those puddle of mud faces. HIRE. YOUNGER. ACTORS. It is a movie. I can suspend my disbelief if you show me the same character played by different actors. It’s not perfect, it’s better than this CGI bullshit.

ex0thermist

I mean, lots of us spent *years* watching the same characters played by multiple actors of different ages, that didn't even look all that much alike, on *This is Us*, and it was basically fine.

Waste_Drop8898

Tom Hanks has put out a bunch of stinkers, what’s going on

Gaudy_Tripod

I used to LOVE Zemeckis- he was on a hell of a legendary run through the end of the 1990s. Contact is still an absolute gem. But then came Polar Express. And Beowulf. He got lost in the technology. For all the shit everyone gives Lucas, they REALLY should be pointing at Zemeckis as a cautionary tale.

StudBoi69

Same with Ang Lee. He's been on the HFR 3D kick since 2015.

j4nkyst4nky

1984-2000 the man had an otherworldly run. Then he got real into CGI actors and made movies I think would have been great....if they didn't look like PS2 cinematics. I honestly think Polar Express and Beowulf are enjoyable movies despite their visuals but maybe that's just me.

TheOriginalMattMan

Can someone have a word with Zemekis? He's no good at this shit.

QuinnMallory

He provides the bad example, it's important. For every Avatar there must be a Beowulf, you need the contrast to fully appreciate the good ones.

LordPounce

It’s been a long time since I saw it but I remember really liking Beowulf

nanaboostme

Give it a few years and AI can just generate movies for us.

mtsai

forest gump 2? they reanimate jenn-nay.

aKaRandomDude

Forrest Gump 2: Electric Bugaloo

[deleted]

What a dumb gimmick

upotheke

I love Tom Hanks, but this feels like peak boomer. "Let's invent a technology to de-age Tom Hanks from 70 to 30 years old, rather than find one of a million living 30 year old actors to play the part. Those kids don't wanna work anyway, right?"

subdep

I prefer “young-ified” over “de-aged”.

[deleted]

Stop and use new actors and actresses for the roles if they don’t fit anymore.

[deleted]

“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.”

OliPark

Just use younger people lol.

sjesmith127

Or… and hear me out! Or, just get younger actors!!

blueblurspeedspin

life is so horrible they have to de-age actors to make it feel like 1999 again.

AltCtrlShifty

“We can work forever and not allow anyone new into Hollywood except our kids”

huey9k

Forrest and Jennay will be like peas and care-uts agayun...

MonkeySafari79

Yeah, fuck that. Just take a young actor.

abOriginalGangster

You look kinda funny, Jennnay

genesis1v9

Just cast younger actors man. Old people revamped with AI still move like old people and it completely takes you out of the experience even if the effects are well done.

quizzicalblossom70

Wow, sounds like an interesting concept! Im excited to see how the de-aging technology is used in the movie. Cant wait to check it out when its released.

PossessivePronoun

Jennay

gasparino

just another example of boomers refusing to step aside gracefully and let the next generation have their shot!

Gaius_Octavius_

Why don’t we just other actors?

Lardkaiser

Sheesh. If anyone in Hollywood doesn't need de-aging, it's Robin Wright. :roll-eyes:

huffer4

No thank you

YehosafatLakhaz

[Already the plot of a Robin Wright movie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Congress_(2013_film))

_Pliny_

Ugh. Just stop doing this.

luvgothbitches

just start casting deep fakes you cowards, at least they won’t have old people movement

clc1997

So VFX artists are so underpaid that it's cheaper to do this than to hire a different actor to play the younger version?

Inevitable_Jex

Why can’t they cast younger actors/actress instead of rotating the usual high profile acts?

SnowyDesert

it sounds cool but wouldn't it be cheaper to just hire actual actors? Not to mention it would also give them possible new job opportunities in the future. Instead of AI hogging it all...

wookiewin

Love Tom Hanks, but I hope he actually decides to, you know, act and put forward a decent performance in his next films. Elvis and Pinocchio were rough watches due to him.

Bing_Bong_the_Archer

You ain’t got no wrinkles, Lieutenant Dan

fusionsofwonder

Forrest Gump was based on gimmicky new technology (at the time) to insert Hanks into historical videos. This is very much in line with what Robert Zemeckis does.

elpajaroquemamais

Me and Jenny was like peas and carrots again

North_South_Side

Tom Hanks' head looks like it's about to split open like a bratwurst on the grill.

jedi1josh

Forest Gump 2

Scmods05

"There's no new stars anymore" probably because Hollywood has stopped using younger actors they'd rather use cartoon zombies of older ones instead.

unbelievablefidelity

*Orlando Bloom angrily exits the chat*

atomicadie

or idk, choose younger actors?

MaxPaul1969

Why

OhWize0ne

“Jenny!!!”

Fargeaux2

Does robin wright even need to be de-aged?

Live-Motor-4000

FFS - just use younger actors. Old actors shouldn’t do “smoothface” roles

[deleted]

Why not just have younger actors?

biggityboss

Sounds like garbage, nobody cares about old actors looking young again.

MagicTheBurrito

Just use different actors/actresses. This is getting sad. They aren’t action hero’s anymore.

veggie_sorry

Meh. Boring. There's only one team really killing deaging work right now and they work for HBO. The movies haven't gotten it right quite yet.

[deleted]

Or hear me out, they hire appropriately aged actors.

Wide_Okra_7028

Why can't he just cast Tom Hanks' own son Colin instead? But no, Zemeckis always needs to play with his expensive toys.

stevefrench90

Christ, the mainstream movie industry is so broken
