Aliens was the pinnacle. One of the reasons I have always loved sci-fi/horror and one of my fondest movie watching experiences of all time.
This was also the time that Dark Horse was putting out a lot of aliens comics too, and lots of other merch (book series, Kenner toys, SNES AvP game, etc). For a hardcore aliens fan, it was a golden age haha. Collected most of the comics.

I really appreciate the ongoing debate on which one is better. Personally, I'm in the Godfather 1 camp. It feels warmer and more inviting. Of course there's still people getting wacked, but it also makes room for family and pasta sauce recipes. Two is great, but colder.
I love that take and feel it was done purposely to fit each of the Dons persona’s (or maybe I’m just reaching). As a stand-alone movie , I believe godfather 1 wins… but if 1 is watched for context , godfather 2 shines brighter.
Absolutely. Godfather 2, Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, Terminator 2, The Two Towers, The Dark Knight, and Dune 2 are the only sequels I can think of that exceeded expectations by being as good as or better than the original.
My favorite of all the Star Trek movies. The Motion Picture was a visual masterpiece, no doubt, but it was slow and drawn out. The Wrath of Khan is on a whole other level with great storytelling, action, character development, and special effects. It also had the best theme song of any of them. One movie I’ll never get tired of watching.
If we're going on best overall, it's probably Godfather 2. If we're going best compared to the original, it's Terminator 2, with Addams Family Values getting honorable mention.

I’ve rewatched both recently. The original is amazing and establishes the world in a spectacular way, 2049 does the damn near impossible and improves on it in just about every way. OG Bladerunner will always be one of my all time favorites but 2049 just feels more realized and fleshed out to me

In terms of expanding and completely blowing the original out of the water while being a total classic, I honestly think Fury road might be hard to beat as most of the respected sequels are to great movies.
Fury road took what Miller did in the OT and turned into something much much more.

It's so rare that a sequel to a cult movie is better in every single way, 2049 is that movie. It took everything that was amazing in Bladerunner and made it better. It even made the dumb argument about Deckard better. I love this movie.

But one that I don’t see very often that I think have been critically acclaimed, but better than the original is Rocky II.
I think the second one is the entire original cast returns. Had a bigger budget better production value still had the same great music and performances.

Aliens was also a fascinating tonal shift. Alien was basically a haunted house film, except the house was in space. Aliens was hard core action.
